There is a problem with our battery life and we all know its true... I have even been given a new battery and HTC mains charger
I turn off any service im not using at the time (ie: wifi, BT, GPS, NETGPS,etc) not that I should have to do this, but lets story on track...
My battery will make about 1 day as I am A "power user" but if its not plugged in I wont have the juice for my alarm to wake me up, my wifes Sony Ericsson lasts 4-5 days per charge, but lets not compare apples and oranges, the whi-phone 3g my sister has sahe bought it about the same times as my g1, she hadn't ever heard of "deep cycling" 2-5 times when you get a new phone, she never lets it discharge fully and just tops off all the time, AFAIK she is treating a NIMH cell exactly the wrong way, BUT SHE GETS 1-3 DAYS depending on the type of use, and never turns off ANY of the 3g, gps, net gps, wifi, BT nada and Id say she uses hers alot because its her primary camera, GPS & A/V player
my question is WHY?
Im sure there must be somebody involved with the development of this phone/OS that reads thru here, since there is more exciting stuff coming from XDA than there is the market...

they better come off a new battery almost all other new phones will get 1-2 day + average use, Ive had phones that could go 3-4. but the state of the art G1 mindblowing innovative phone wont even work a whole day, so what if its bigger than the whi-phone, it has no keyboard.
I for one would like to hear some solid info on a replacement battery and back, for new and existing G1 users, early adopters got the fuzzy end of the lollipop on the HTC->headphone jack adapter I got the headphones with the htc angled adapter from fleabay, so many manufactures stick it to the early adopter, when we are the ones that get the word of mouth going, as people go "WOW that thing is cool!,what is it?! they know when we bought out phones and should be able to figure out when the head phone rev change was made, so send them to the first of the buyers....

I think the bad press is starting to out weigh the good press the G1 and possibly android as a whole is at a crossroad. If the g1 tanks Android will be stained forever...thankfully enuff I dont think XDA-DEV would give up on this badboy, I love this thing, and I love it for what it can be

I dunno. With normal use, I get about 12 hours or more from my stock battery. That's about the same as other HTC phones I've had.
there is a battery issue and we are al aware of it.
i have managed to have it last through out the day
just set the brightness to the lowest possible, sleep time to 15 secs
turn off data and wifi and anything else that you are not using
its not how the phone was intended to be used, but it's what i ave to do for now
I find it fine for everyday use. Of course I haven't done a full test but maybe tomorrow I will.
I would like to use my G1 like I use my WinMo but no way I can with the battery.

I think you're exaggerating here a little bit. The battery life, while it got press at first, has faded from the limelight of android news for the general population. The G1 is already far from a flop and I don’t think there’s going to be a sudden mass return of all the handsets sold.
Let’s face it living on the cutting edge means you will get cut sometimes. Your high expectations will not always be met and manufacturers will frequently not care. The battery life is less than what many people expected, but we’ve learned to deal with it. At least we have options (power management, backup batteries, and expanded capacity batteries), but I’d not hold my breath on HTC making any major moves. How long has the issue been going with the TYTN II drivers anyway?

I have no idea what kind of use gets 1-3 days, but it certainly isn't 3G web browsing. Most iPhone 3G battery life tests clock 3G data use at about 3-5 hours. Based on my own usage of a friend's iPhone 3G, that seems to be about right. Coincidentally my G1 gets about 3-5 hours of 3G data use as well.
Frankly, from an engineer's point of view I have not seen any power drain tests conducted with enough rigor and variable control to be worthy of being called a truly scientific analysis. Even the best "battery life tests" out there aren't declaring what type of testing environment (los and distance to closest 3G tower), what background apps are installed, ambient temperature (which affects the battery discharge profile), etc. Without considering and removing these variables from the test, deviation could be as high as... well there's no fixing the percentage really. It's all just junk data.
I do notice after I installed Task Manager, to close out programs I am not using my battery life went up. There are a lot of un needed start up apps.

Yep my friend has iphone and we did test last weekend, both went 3 hours and change then died. If i dont use internet and set timeout and brightness down plus use task manager mine will go as long as my dash. I personally dont care about the battery life, i have a computer, home charger and car charger and i drive for a living so if it gets low no biggie. In my opinion i dont see android going anywhere and i love the g1. Just like wm its gonna take time to get off the ground. To say its at a crossroads is ridiculous.
I am using ADP1.1 and yea if I am browsing the net with 3G for 3-5 hours straight I start seeing the battery go down. But from 100% to 0% takes me longer than 5 hours. I know because I like to lay in bed and don't care to come check my messages LOL
I bought a G1 last week and so far I have been really dissapointed. After having an elf and seeing other htc phones I was expecting big things from the G1.
I am now a week into ownership and after 5 full charge - discharge cycles I am managing to get 24 hours out of the phone with next to no use what so ever. If i check my emails and do 30 mins browsing the phone is dead in 6 or less.
The hardware is simply put 'very poor' my screen is wobbly and the back is loose, all this after just a week.
As for android, it is fantastic everything I expected (except hotmail support) and there is no way it is going to flop. Its just a shame that google and htc didn't wait until they had the right phone for the job.

It all depends on what you have installed. for me the start up is. I beleve amazon does too, but I uninstalled that. But the first thing I do is go into task manager and kill everything. And only like two things auto start up. I really with HTC built in a x-button app for android. I loved the click x for close.

Under light usage I get about 36 hours from full charge to shutdown. That's GPS on, Bluetooth on, Autosync on, periodically doing e-mail and web browsing.
Under heavy usage (Which is basically I listened to MP3s for 2 hours) it goes at least 17 hours before I plug it back in. I haven't tested but I'd bet it could go 20 or more.
That's as good as (or better) than I was getting on the Wizard/MDA.
I dunno if anyone has stated it but the problem with the battery has to do with the phone recieving the cell signal. For some reason the phone runs in overload when searching for a cell signal...I noticed this one day when T-Mo suspended my service and my battery meter never moved all day, I think by night it was down to 85-90%...sure enough that night when I paid my bill and the phone started picking up signal again, the battery depleted at "normal" speed.

Why do i keep hearing that there is no hotmail support? Android (and G1) works with hotmail just fine! Just go to the Email program and set it up. WHY!! .. I am having connection errors sometimes though..
Battery is a big issue. Never had any luck with it.. EVER.. just unplugged it and after about 1+ hour it's down to 66%. Played a game (slide puzzle) watched 2 youtube vids of about 3 minutes each. And I had it fully drained and recharged a couple of times in the beginning. It didn't even took 10 minutes to drop from 100% to 89%.. But I was on wifi.. Maybe this is normal.
Software has a lot to do with this I think. Yesterday I had about 50-60% left. Did something, can't remember what, opening programs or music. And closed it. After 5 minutes I checked and battery was hot and had drained to orange level. I checked with task manager and only calendar/messaging/tunewiki/music was on. I closed all and restarted the phone, cuz it was still hot. Luckily it lasted a few hours till I got home, with very carefull use..

Is the N1 really plagued with so many problems, or are some people nit-picking and creating issues which aren't there? Forums are all filled up with these "issues" threads. Issue this, issue that. I would like to cancel them out with a POSITIVE thread.
I've had 2 N1's - the Tmobile and ATT versions.
- NO dust under the screen issues
- NO 3g issue for ATT (I didn't have 3g Tmobile)
- NO purple tinting on ATT
- NO battery life issues - mine lasts 30 hours with moderate use. CM5053. Tmobile version lasted just as long
- NO MMS issues
- NO build quality issues - it's built like a tank.
- NO regrets
I am dusting iphones left and right with speed and connection quality. Just yesterday in a movie theater my friend's 3gs had data issues while my N1 worked perfectly. I turned on my wifi tethering so that he could finish downloading his apps and checking his messages through my N1.
Am I just lucky or in the minority? Chime in if you also have no problems and are tired of seeing all these "issue" threads creating a negative stigma toward the N1. It's the best smartphone experience I've ever had. No problems here!

Yes, I agree. I think too many people are picky, or don't know how to maintain there widgets or automatically updating widgets correctly causing battery drains or touching the screen with the hand their holding it with and then trying to scroll with the other. I Think the 3G Issue is relevant to the coverag area their in....
I do think the dust issue is real on some, (not mine) and the antenna could have been placed better...
That said, I have no issues either.... I love my nexus one so much I actually have been neglecting my wife and need to put this thing down.. this is after 3 months almost.
There's a lot of haters on this phone, hate all ya want when we get froyo first and yall gotta wait for htc and then ya provider to push out updates.
i think you only hear from users with problems on forums. happy users hav no reason to post.

I should have said 30 hours with tweaking. I have:
- CM5053
- pershoot ocuv
- juice defender app
- force edge at work (since I don't get 3g in the office. Preventing the radio from constantly jumping/searching saves a lot of battery)
During a normal day:
- unplug at 1am
- wake up at 7am with 93%, turn on juice defender
- browse web for 1/2 hour before i actually get up
- browse web/play games for 45 minute commute
- force edge at work, light web browsing/email until 6pm (around 50-60% remaining by late afternoon)
- browse web/play games for 1 hr commute back home
- turn off juice defender at home, back on wifi
- light playing around here and there.
- by 10pm or so, i still have 30% remaining or more before I recharge.
- texts/gchat/check twitter throughout the day.
- on "light" use (barely touching phone throughout the day), i reached 27 hours and still had 20% remaining. I had to force the remaining 20% to drain with nonstop Homerun Battle 3d because I was recalibrating my battery at the time and needed to go to sleep.
- When my phone is idle on wifi or edge, I lose less than 2% per hour. On 3G, less than 3%. It's hard to be exact, but my juice plotter graph is very flat during idle.
- I think it's very much ROM/tweak based. I jumped from CM to Modaco's Desire Alpha 7 ROM way back before, and my battery life dropped about 35% compared to CM at the time and I could not make it back home from work without the phone almost dying. I don't remember what it was like on stock ROM, haven't been there in a while.
- Right now, I never worry about charging for the entire day because I know I'll always make it back home with extra battery remaining, unless it's a Friday and I stay out late at night.

No issues here either. I agree you only hear from people with problems. No one is going to start a thread to report that their phone is working as it should.
People also have a lot of issues on iPhone forums. Just looking at MacRumors it looks like 90% are problems and 10% are "how do I...?" The problems cover the whole spectrum. Stuck at boot logo, data not working, sync problems, and even an "An Apple Genius f**ked up my iPhone..."
Mine is ideal too -- USB tethered it to PCs, Macs and Linux boxes all over NAB tradeshow with my T-Mobile version, got >200KB/sec while poor iphones couldn't even tether at all. Excellent battery life, fast, sexy, responsive, totally rock solid and plenty of space for USB files on my SD card... hard to see how an iphone could beat it.
My N1 with AVS kernel by IntersectRaven just lasted about 27hours yesterday So its possible. Moderate use, Browser, Games: World War, Pocket mobile, iMobster, Armageddon Squadron and a little bit of music player used.
No problems with my N1 here too, except the 3g isnt that great when im in certain areas since I got T-Mobile, but when I get good connection the N1 flies.

Let us know when you start encountering the touchscreen issues that 90% or more of N1 users are facing.
Only issue with mine is build quality. the aluminum frame where engraving could be done isnt flush with the battery and antenna covers. imo not a big deal but it doesnt fit perfectly in the desk dock
I've had my N1 since Jan 16 never had touch screen issues.

no issues for me either. I have to wonder where all the issues come from too. like I'll read someone complain that they can't type well with the keyboard and use that to bash the phone, yet I don't have any issues with it.
of course I get the occasional touch screen glitch. but a quick 1 second turn off the screen resets it.
and the battery life is short, but the iPhone forums show the same complaints so it seems to me to be inherent of large screened phones.

I came from an iphone and the nexus one has been amazing. Just having the "back" button functionality alone is worth the price of admission. I always dreaded clicking on URLs in apps on the iphone as it usually meant losing what I had going on in that app. Not anymore! And I loving the fact that I can personalize almost every part of the phone.
That being said, I have a very hard time believing that anyone is satisfied with the reception of this phone. I have never owned a phone before that dropped calls because I moved my hand to the wrong spot. It's embarrassing.
So I've had the Incredible since launch day and must say that I'm very pleased with it. The first day I had a couple of random reboots and on day two my phone was awake 100% of the time. I did a battery pull and haven't had any issues since. The following is long so I've sectioned it off. Read what you want and leave the rest for others to read. I'm sure some of you have had different experiences, but this is mine and these are my opinions.
Battery Discussion
Others have complained that the battery is less than stellar (at least in the forums I've read). I always try to hold off judgment early on for two reasons: 1. It's a new toy and I'm prone to using the crap out of it & 2. I think battery calibration time is needed for the phone. This isn't for the battery but time for the phone to calibrate with how the battery discharges. I used the stock 1300mAh battery for the first week and started using a Seidio 1750 on Saturday.
I know this is a hot debate, and I even started to doubt my purchase after placing the order. I read reports and claims that Seidio battery's are only good for 84% of their claimed capacities and such. When the battery arrived on Friday (the 1750mAh btw), I waited till the end of the night before installing it. I powered down the phone, inserted the battery, and left it to charge while turned off. The following day I had extremely heavy use. GPS ran for 1 1/2 hours (display on), Slacker Radio for 45 minutes, lots of web browsing, and sitting in a theater with poor signal (it was hunting for 90 minutes). At the end of day one I had around 5 hours of awake time and 12 hours of uptime before it started running low. Sunday the phone saw moderate use through most of the day. I wanted to drain the battery before bed so I turned on all my radios, jacked up the brightness, and played videos for about 90-120 minutes before it shutdown for the evening. Monday I had similar results to Sunday, I was getting about 6 hours of awake time with 14+ hours of uptime. Actually on Monday I didn't even wear the phone down to the point of shutting down. I only got it to 10% or so, not sure on the awake (over 5 for sure) time but my uptime was 15 1/2 hours.
I did notice something funny this morning. I forgot to charge my phone while off last night and woke up to a fully charged unit (according to the green indicator). I unplugged the phone and checked the HTC battery widget, 93%!?!?! This was after 7 hours of charging. I turned the phone off and let it charge to green while powered off. This confirms what I've heard others say, that the phone is not fully charging the battery and falls short about the last 10% or so.
Screen Protector
I ordered Phantom Skinz matte protector Friday from Amazon for $18. This is my first dealing with Phantom Skinz and my order came in yesterday. I actually got 2 x matte finish and 2x regular protectors. I tried the matte out and hated it, so on came the normal and it's nice. I have used Zagg's Invisible Shield(on an iPhone) and I couldn't believe the difference. Application was the easiest I've ever experienced and I'm very happy with it. As time goes on I'll get a better feel for it, but the initial impression is good.
Case
I've been using the Silicone Gel Verizon case and like it for a temporary cover until something better comes out. As others have reported Otter Box just put in a product suggestion for me and I don't see anything on Case-Mate's webiste I'm sure the demand will bring about a product soon, just email and let them know there's a demand.
Compared to other Android devices I've used...
It's awesome and feels like the Android phone I've been waiting for. I've tried the Sprint Hero, Motorola Droid, and Verizon Eris. While they were all good they just fell short in areas that seem to bother me. The Incredible has a fitting name in my book and the camera is leaps and bounds better than what I expected.
Compared to my iPhone/iPad experience
I'll say this, Android is a better fit for me on the phone platform. I left the iPhone for my Eris which has recently been sold to fund my Incredible. I got an iPad shortly after launch, but after getting the Incredible I find that it only serves as an e-reader for me.
That's quite the remarkable story you've got there. Not enough to be incredible P), but remarkable nonetheless.
Also, why did you hate the matte finish so much? Does it interfere with the performance of the touch screen?

LOL, thanks for the comments. I didn't like the matte screen because it really blurred the screen a ton. Touchscreen responsiveness was still great, but it killed the clarity of the screen.
Tilt2 to Droid Incredible
I came from the Tilt2 on AT&T and I LOVE this phone and almost everything about it. What I am not exactly pleased with Verizon's CDMA.
I dislike how I have to disable "Always Connected Data" to get decent battery life. On my Tilt2, I could stay on MSN messenger 24/7 with very little impact on my battery. With that option off my battery life is much better, but Meebo also shows me offline a lot on MSN.
Also those AT&T commercials about the "No data+voice" is ringing true. Already there has been 4 instances in a 4 day period where that has caused me a problem. I guess it was something I took for granted on AT&T.
I guess I am stuck here for 2 years, because I just can't go back to AT&T and their lack of decent phones. They must have some sort of agreement with Apple to limit what phones they offer in order to maintain their exclusivity. I was hoping to get a decent Android or Windows Phone 7 on AT&T but I doubt that will ever happen.
I came from xv6800 on Verizon. So far I'm impressed. I love the speed of the phone. Internet is super quick and very fluid. Not to mention it also does flash lite which is a definite plus. The only issue I have is probably the battery. It could be better, but it's not horrible.

Really? you have to turn off "Always Connected Data"? I keep mine on all the time. I also keep GPS on and I get a full day's worth. Granted, I don't have msn or any chat client on all the time.
Hey At&t is suppose to get the galaxy s. That phone looks like a beast. I have no idea when that's coming out though.
Past Windows Mobile user
Well let me start by saying that this is my first Android phone. I am a long time user of Windows CE PocketPC Mobile. (Hmm, I guess this implementation of BB doesn't have strikethrough enabled, but you get the point.)
An iPaq lured me away from Palm; the Samsung i-760 convinced me to switch from a PPC and mobile phone, to an all-in one device; and now the Incredible has gotten me to switch platforms.
I had seriously considered jumping carriers for the iPhone, but alas, where I live AT&T doesn't have a great signal, and those few that do have them, are waiting until their contract ends to jump to Sprint or Verizon.
I wasn't the one who "discovered" the Incredible though - I was happy with my Imagio (thanks to Energy ROM, found here) and had just switched from the TouchPro. My wife was up for a new phone, and got the Incredible, which I then had to set up for her! After four hours (no, it doesn't take that long to set up, I just played around with it for that long!) I was hooked. I went back the next day, and they still had one in stock. I switched and haven't looked back.
I haven't found any reason to mod the rom (or I guess it's rooting on Android), and the sheer speed is awesome. I felt like a traitor to Windows Mobile (hey it was a long term relationship remember), but that only lasted about two days.
I miss hand-writing recognition for SMS and data-entry, but other than that, this is a device that you will love. Spend a few minutes with it, try it out if you can get your hands on it. You will never look back.
So I finally got rid of my iPhone 3G (jailbroken on T-Mobile), and got an HD2 instead. I've always liked Windows Mobile phones (and had most iterations), and since now there is finally some capacitative goodness on WM, I jumped on the opportunity.
And I'm regretting it already.
I'm hoping that somebody here has some suggestion that my two days of thread searching, and experimenting didn't cover.
The problem is, yay, .... the damn battery.
I left it on the charger from totally empty to completely full at 2AM. At 8AM, it was down to 85%. Ten minutes of reading e-mails, 74%. The thing is really not usable in this state.
Here are all the things I checked already:

Strong 3G coverage area, still tried out WMLongLife anyway (with no difference).
Did several cycles of full discharge, recharge.
Always check task manager, not leaving programs running.
Nothing else is set to go online - Live is disabled.
Screen brightness is set at 30%.
All charges done via wall charger.
I read every post I could find, especially fun the ones where people get 4 days of standby, and 6+ hours of heavy use. Short of loading the ARTEMIS ROM, I exhausted all options I could find. And really, it seems like people get decent performance from the stock ROM, so I'd like to stick with that for the moment.
What am I missing?
So frustrating. I can see how this sort of thing would make the average "just user" go run for the Android or Apple hills. No wonder we get stuck with restrictive babysitting technology, when others can't get their **** together. Spend $450 on a phone that can't make it through a half day of reasonable use? Argh!!

hey man, i was like you at first too. all my mates had iphones (i dislike apple in general) i didnt want one. At the time o2 (uk) didnt stock android phones and i had a sony x1 previously. So, i got the hd2 and...like you said was disapointed.
Changed the rom to a custom one here at xda (hdowners btw) which lasts 1.5 days (heavy usage)...never seems to get 2 full days when i use it alot.
installed a few different browsers (opera 9.7 and 10)
installed morphgear (with some amazing landscape skins)
fpsece (i found time crisis to be the only actual playable game)
coreplayer
and found it a awesome phone...changed my views on it. Try some custom roms and see what you think...usually you will go mad installing themes, skins, apps...just go wild and keep the ones you really like/work in a seperate folder. Then reflash and install the best only...thats how i done it and i now love this phone

wayandrs: The main thing that will help is by upgrading the ROM even if it is to stock 1.66 (the latest UK one available) then you notice a large difference and even more so with some of the cooked ones. Other things to note are the WiFi, make sure it doesn't be left on (and only turn it on if you need it) it proper drains the battery. Without knowing your habbits with your phone it is very hard to come up with decent suggestions that hasn't already been posted elsewhere.
I can safely say I get 2-3 days use out of my device but then I don't use it all that much (anymore), don't forget as it is a new toy for you, you will keep playing with it seeing what it can do, this will soon die down (as it always does) then it will be better.
there must be something wrong with your device or battery.
mine lasts for about 3-4 days while middle use. i think for such a powerful and huge device, this is more than respectable.
heavy use...mh...i would say it lasts minimal 2 days, sometimes more.

The battery will improve after a week or so .
Note : charging your battery the first time for only 6hours isn't much , the first time that i charged my battery i left it charging for 24 hours.
Updating to the latest ROM and Radio helps .

1) Take your phone back to where you bought it and let them deal with it. I get at least a full day with heavy use which is to be expected from a high end device with a 4.3 inch screen. I spent a few dollars on a car charger and an extra wall charger for work, sorted.
2) If you want help on these forums leave out the useless complaining about what a rotten device you have. I think I speak for many contributors of this forum when I say that these kind of posts are getting old and wearisome. You will be more likely to get polite replies with inteligent suggestions if you simply state the problem without moaning about the horrible mistake you made in being seduced into buying an HD2. I have purchased phones that I simply did not care for. I returned them.
First step: Flash a decent ROM with most of the performance/battery tricks in there already. Many of these ROMs are constructed from the best (often most battery efficient) parts of multiple ROMS.
Touch-X, Energy, Artemis, CleanEx, etc. All are excellent (though I favour Touch-X myself for a great utility/preformance/battery balance).
Second step: Flash a good Radio that works well in your area but also works well with the ROM/has decent battery life. You'll need to research this for your chosen ROM.
I use the Korean radio in UK. Good quality/signal/battery life.
Run it for a few days, charging to full and emptying the battery before recharging to full again. Do this for 3/4 days at least.
Those changes alone got me upto 2.5 days standby and 4 hours usage (thats movie playing for 4 hours with 100% backlight in a hotel room). Good for a smartphone and longer than my friends IPhones.
Other small programs like WMLongLife, adjusting down the backlight automatically, added another .5 days to standby (though not much to active use life).

I do wonder though if when someone buys a new 'Toy' that they dont hammer it to start with for the 'joy' and never think of the consequences.
I like you, no matter which phone I own, being a businessman and needing maximum performance have a charger at my bedside (the phone is my alarm) and also connect it to the car charger when driving.
I wonder if many of the people that move up from a basic Nokia phone (or similar that can last a week) realise what is involved in powering all the functions they require?

I use the stock rom 1.66 from the beginning and check my mail automatically every 30 minutes. Now and then I check some websites and download cabs and use HSDPA/3G and WIFI if available. My battery is 100% in the morning and 70 percent in the evening. Not bad at all. The first 12 times I fully charched the battery during the night.
I use Bandswitch, which automatically disables my connection within 30 seconds. This is the most important and useful tip! You don't need a custom ROM to solve the battery drain issue.

And yea, to those 'get a life' and 'don't complain about Windows phones' posts, whatever. I've owned Windows Mobile phones since they first came out, and it's just frustrating that the out-of-the box usability hasn't gotten any better to this day. A new 1200 battery is 15 pounds (the official from HTC) as a backup. I personaly have bought the extended battery 2400 and it is great. The default battery doesn't last the full day for me because I use it constinuosly as mp3 player , brownsing and video player. I mean, you have options.

I'll be trying the Elegancia ROM.
That is, once I find a ROM with 2.8 SPL that works on my 1024 version of the H2, to reflash mine so I can get HSPL to work to flash.
I've always really liked Windows Mobile for its flexibility and massive base of developers ... on the flip side, I've been screwing around with this thing for several days now, trying to get a phone that can last through a day. Ahhh, the bittersweet experience that is WM.
I get at most 2 days combined cycle out of my stanard battery and i've had my phone for about 10 days. It came with the stock 1.66 rom but i've run through the tips and tweaks threads so the phone ui is faster and a bit more usable. One of those is a replacement task manager that disables smart minimize in favour of actually closing programs. I've also set the weather software to update every 3 hours because tbh you don't need it to be any more often than that. I do use the wifi alot but i do turn it off when i'm not using the phone. i have also noticed with my phone is if the wifi is connected to an access point for more than 5 minutes it will automatically disable the 3G connection and turn it back on when the wifi is disabled.
for the first couple of days i was completely discharging the battery and then charging it for about 12 hours. this seems to have been the most beneficial. i also will not put it on charge unless it really needs it.
hi, from experience, 3G medium usuage.. 4/5 a day.
If you disconect the 3G connection when not using, it will help.
And of course if you go on GSM instead, one day is not difficult..

2) Watching video. Worst, video on 3G !
3) games, especially the 3Ds ones or high on processing like the Tower simulation game.

From my experience, from a fresh flash, my battery improves as I get to use it longer and longer.
take a look at your data sync like weather and stock and also check the social networking sync.
Earlier this year, I was a huge Android fan. I had a rooted G1 with a different firmware every week. My Dream ended when I realized that the battery was lasting me not more than 5-6 hours, even with very light use. This was after swapping out batteries/phones. Also, for working out, I needed a good music player. Android's default one needed a LOT of improvements.
So, when my friend brought over his iPhone, I decided to give it a try. I bought an iPhone 3GS from craigslist. Jailbroke and Unlocked it. The battery was lasting me more than a day, even after watching more than an hour of TED.com talks, and listening to an hour of music. The ipod functionality was amazing with the volume/music controls in the earphones.
Then, I accidentally updated my phone to the latest firmware... which cannot be unlocked. So I'm back to using my G1.
So, the question still stands.. Is Froyo on Nexus One better in battery performance and iPod functionality of iPhone 3GS. Especially with the upcoming iPhone 4G, we can be sure that Apple will increase the battery life of iPhone (as they've done with all previous updates)?
I get a lot better battery life with Froyo then on my 3GS to be honest. Also, as far as the music functionality goes, why do you think its so bad? If you dislike the interface, then you can download a alternate option from the Market. But for me, as long as it plays the songs, view/edit playlists and browse the music I am good to go.
i got slightly less battery life from my Nexus with 3G turned off compared to my jailbroken 3GS.
normally ended up with about 10% less battery at the end of the day compared to my IPhone and similar usage.
the Nexus was stone stock.

As I mentioned before, I use the earphone controls A LOT.. and am not sure if Nexus One will offer the same functionality.

Battery life is across the board on the N1 for some reason. People will have the same set up and get very different kinds of battery life. I know I've never been happy with the battery life of the phone.
A good music player is ³. Cubed. I like it. I recommend the Nexus One if you get the 2 batteries and external battery charger for 20 bucks deal off of eBay. Maybe life will increase but until then having an arsenal of batteries solves my problem.
Ok, I guess I'm back to 8th grade, basic math. Let's calculate. And because you could have just looked in the specs and done the math yourself, I'm not going to look there, and if I bring the wrong numbers - so be it.
1.5 hr of music is almost nothing. Music is optimized for very low battery usage - 20 hr of listening or so. Let's say, 5% off battery.
Wifi on is nothing. You can keep it on for as long as you like, you actually save battery - it turns off 3G/HSDPA and uses WiFi data.
1.5 hr phone calls out of ~6 hours spec ~= 25% battery off.
1 hr video out of 5 hr spec ~= 20% off.
2 hr games are quite destructive. Both CPU activity and display. Let's say, another 25-30% off.
You're left with approx. 15-20%. Surprised?
Oh wait... It figures, no? Do you think one of those systems is going to be significantly inferior in terms of battery life? You don't think Samsung and Qualcomm know their stuff well enough?
Ah, and the difference is going to show if you use Android power and load it with zillion auto-updating and auto-syncing widgets, that'll chew on your CPU idle time and use up your network power.
[edit] That's exactly the reason for varying battery life between users, as the poster above noted. People use their phone differently, and unlike iPhone, it can perform a lot of things simultaneously, without you even noticing (it's enough that you installed auto-syncing widget and made it sync once in 5 min with a good amount of data, for example) - and it'll cost you battery life. Control what you're running, and you'll get more out of the battery.
I came from an iPhone 3G to the Nexus One and the battery life does seem worse. it's always hard to compare because I do more with my Nexus One. My gut feeling though is even if my usage is similar to what I would have done with my iPhone, the Nexus One just uses more power. Part of that may be the higher res screen. Battery usage almost always shows the display as the biggest user of my battery.
I recently have been having worse than normal battery life. I'm not sure if it's due to upgrading to Froyo or if it is because I turned Latitude on. If it's Latitude, then it's really frustrating that the Battery Usage area doesn't list Latitude as using my battery. Kind of makes that a pointless feature if things just get hidden under names like "Android System".
I also agree with you on the Android music player. I use it, and it's not terrible, but the iPod app on the iPhone is just much easier to quickly get to the music you want to play. Also the Genius features are really well done. Someone suggested Cubed. I found it gives a really good first impression but once you use it you realize it's actually just flashy and it functions awful. As far as I can tell there's no way to quickly find and play a single song with it.
Battery life for 3gs is better than nexus..
For my usage the battery life on Froyo is about twice as good as the battery on 3GS. Granted, I listen to slacker radio while browse websites for about 2 hours a day and the multitasking on android is much more natural than the jailbreak alternative.

I am not altogether sure you aren't just trolling. There isn't any way to give a definitive answer to this question, but I'll give you my experience.
No new N1 user is going to say he gets good battery life. You won't want to shut the screen off for the first week.
Now, I can get a day and a half out of my battery on a stock rom if I don't sync absolutely everything frequently, I use wifi when it's available, keeping radios I am not using off and basically, being mindful of power use. I use it frequently, but not constantly. And if I am away from a charger, I have an inexpensive spare battery that I can change all by myself without any special tools all the while sending SJ a FU via ESP.

Lemme get first thing straight.. I have NO intentions of trolling No harm intended. When I bought the iPhone, EVERYONE I know was immensely surprised. I was (and still am) a spokesperson for Android. I love the apps. Maybe thats a reason that we all install so many widgets/apps which use data.... So many are available for free!! and awesome ones too.. for example.. I'd kill for the News and Weather app to be in iPhone.. but its not...
As I said in the original post.. a big chunk of my criteria is battery life.. second big chunk is music... I guess I'm sad that no Android phone yet can beat the battery life that an average iPhone user gets... I was hoping by releasing Froyo, google would change that (hence this thread)...
Trust me guys.. I live by my gmail.. would rather have everything centered around it... than having apple control my life... just dont wanna carry around extra batteries.. like i had to for my g1...
Intersectraven kernels with any nexus one Rom gives me the best battery. Rite now I'm on froyo and have lasted more than 20 hours with the kernel.

Which of Raven's kernel are you using?
I have a iPhone 2G and it beats my N1 on battery but not considerably.. I read that the 2G is teh king while 3G is the worse of the three iPhones. 3GS is slight better than 3G.

Something that people keep mentioning but seems to keep getting overlooked when people compare any device running Android to the Almighty iPhone...
Multitasking. Takes. More. Power.
Being able to run 5 or so apps in the background (along with all the automated syncing that's happening on the network-data side of things) is going to drain the battery more than doing one thing at a time on Apple's product.
When your iPhone is able to effectively multitask, come back and then you can compare the battery life.
Quite simply, Android lets you do more than you could ever possibly do on the iPhone platform. It gives you the option (free will - unheard of on the Apple side of things!) to run a handful of apps simultaneously. This, naturally, uses more power as the processor is doing more. This is not rocket science, people. You choose to do more, so accept the power penalty. Or, you can be mindful of your battery usage and manage things appropriately to get a significant battery life improvement. It's your choice!
And if you still don't get enough battery life out of this more powerful, more capable device, as attn1 pointed out, there is absolutely nothing to stop you from getting an inexpensive spare battery that can be swapped into the phone in under a minute (INCLUDING the time it takes to shut down and power back up).
Trying to compare any recent Android device to Apple's iPhone is like comparing my gaming notebook to my old TI-84 graphing calculator - which did get much better battery life than my current Asus G72 notebook.

I, personally, got the best battery life out of the iPhone 2G - I got three days out of it, consistently. BUT, I did not have an unlimited data plan, I did not use it for mail, I always got apps from the store over WiFi, I never streamed music, video or anything else. I had no RSS reader. I listened to some music, played the OCCASIONAL game, sent some texts and made a few calls.
Next would be the Bold. I POUNDED that thing and ALWAYS got at least 2 days out of it. I would send dozens of SMS, read and reply to at least 40 emails/day, use GTalk with my wife for at least 50 messages a day. I'd read RSS feeds with Viigo.
After that, every single phone on the list requires charging every single day.
On the iPhone 3G, I would do a little surfing, maybe a little video, some emails and some text. Music on the metro coming and going to/from work. Charging every day was mandatory.
On the 3GS, with how App Store had better and better stuff, I killed it (as in forced shut down) 5 out of 15 days - all that with no widgets and no multitasking. I would read Le Monde, do some browsing, read tweets, read emails, make a couple of calls and texts. I started stocking the charge cable at work and in my backpack during my weeks with a 3GS, because it wouldn't make it through a day. Most friends and colleagues who have them do the same.
I received the Milestone in December. I loved it, and really started pounding a phone - 100 GTalks a day, some SMS, all email, NewsRob for RSS, Le Monde, News & Weather widget one we hacked that on there (following the Jan 5 release of the N1), twitter and facebook, browsing. App downloads, widgets left and right, plus CONSTANT dev work, image building, flashing, testing, etc. I would get a day if I took my foot off the gas, but if I pushed it too hard, I would kill it. There were a couple of battery killers that were avoidable but which I didn't avoid from time to time - leaving Qik, the browser on the google homepage (with autolocation on) the Camera or Maps open, then letting the phone go "idle" with the screen asleep keeps the GPS on and would eat the battery in an hour or two. This left me high and dry a couple of times, until I paid a bit more attention. The Milestone got better 3G than any iPhone and worse / less-consistent WiFi.
I picked up a Nexus at the beginning of March. It gets somewhat-to-significantly better battery life than the Milestone. I still have to charge it daily, but there seem to be fewer battery-death bonehead choices that drink the go-go juice and leave you without your electronic BFF. Most of that is probably Android 2.1 and the UV kernels - I noticed that the Milestone was better with 2.1 as well. It also gets 10dbm worse radio reception with the same SIM on the same desk on the same network in the same office. But it gets MUCH better and more reliable WiFi, and that is better still since FroYo. I use it a ton - RSS, chat, SMS, calls, LOTS of browsing, Le Monde, NYTimes in Newspapers Full, lots of games in spare time, Google Listen for Podcasts, Music, Movies, taking pictures and videos and posting them online with Twitter, Facebook, YouTube or Buzz, etc.
The Nexus has one MASSIVE problem, as far as bettery goes - charging it on any computer USB port, and many thrid-party USB charge plugs (AC or DC) is atrocious - hours and hours to get just a few percent. I don't know why - Apple can use 1A from anything, RIM / BlackBerry can come close to 2A. My Milestone would take at least 1A from anything. But the stupid HTC kit won't take more than about 400mA from a computer or a non-shorted USB charger. SOME 3rd party stuff will be exploited up until 1A, as will the charger that the N1 comes with, but if not, you're going to see slooooooow charging.
As far as the music player: I want 2 things - good sound and the ability to pause and skip with the mic button. Every iPhone does this, and so does the N1. The N1 DOES support headset buttons (it's own set comes with them), but I use my Shures with a simple mic adaptor. I almost never see the interface - I put on a playlist and shuffle it. DoubleTwist makes sure that I have the same lists on my iPod touch and my Nexus, so I really don't notice the difference.
If you use the interface a lot, well, then the player on an iPhone is the best there is. I just don't use the interface often enough to make that a selling point.
As far as sound - the Milestone got SIGNIFICANTLY more volume and better sound then any iPhone and a ridiculous amount more than an N1.
Froyo just rocks. I miss a couple of CM features, but there are sooooo many good things baked into Froyo - tethering, copy/paste in received GMail messages, SD card app storage, cloud-stored settings, Flash, incredible performance.

Thanks for the VERY detailed post... And also for clarifying the controls thing... thats awesome that N1 uses the mic button for controls... I use it a lot while running to skip songs...
I'm on the brink with my G1 though... Flashed the latest 2.1 ROM from Cygo.. at first I thought it was fast.. but now its driving me crazy.. its not really the ROM but the phone itself.. will post a video of the experience soon..
So to summarize above posts...
- N1 can give same or better battery life than iPhone... provided.. that we use it well... no crazy widgets/apps which keep using data...
- The earphones button CAN be used in N1 to skip songs.. which is awesome for me...
I think I might order my N1 today itself.. as it's still being sold on google (surprisingly enough).. Who knows once only T-Mobile sells it, if they'll stop offering the unlocked option....

Gizmodo and MobileCrunch have pretty much bashed the battery life to make it sound like if its not on the charger, it will die in a matter of an hour or three. For the people who got one from the I/O or other means. What do you get from the phone during a normal days usage? If its that bad, have you guys use SetCPU/Locale/App Killers etc? Thanks.
With light to moderate use, it lasts through the day. A bit worse than Nexus One in that respect, but not too bad.

Android central had a great review on this. I have heard a mixed bag of battery life. Some sounded very good some didn't. But it's the most power smartphone out there so additional drain is expected.

I don't have anything extra except gmail and another account frequently syncing. I get 4-5 hours of browsing and email with 4g on or off, wifi off, gps off. Standby time doesn't seem to have significant effect though I'm sure it would be measurable if you left it in standby for a day. Adequate to get me though a day, but I hardly use voice.
What if you are watching full length movie on HTC Evo, how long will the battery last (especially if I put it on airplane mode)?
I am planning to switch from from Xperia X10i to HTC Evo. My x10 has the usual battery drain problem but I have controlled it with task killer. However, I am yet to run a full movie on it. If x10's battery life has more survival time (with task killer on it of course) then HTC Evo then I might think twice.
Also can the 'task killer' improve HTC Evo's battery life?
Does anyone know if the Evo uses the HTC Touch Pro size battery like the Hero?
If so then I've already got an external charger and three extra batteries!
Honestly if anyone is that worried about battery life get another battery as a backup. Its been said many times on these forums that a HTC Touch Pro 2 and also a HTC Hero all use the same batteries as the EVO. (Confirmed). You can pick them up on ebay for around 7 or 8$. Which is pretty cheap! Nothing better than having an extra juice pack laying around waiting to be used! Hope this helps somewhat

LOL we posted at the same time, thanks for answering my question! I'll keep a backup in my glove box and one in my back pocket. This method worked great with my Hero.

Great minds think a like. Ya man wont get to hot in that glove box either. Its always nice to have a little something extra especially when we will be showing this bad boy off 24/7 to anyone that wants to see it! Cant wait to "Officially" get mine lol. Im about 17 hrs and 3 minutes form my appt.

i'm so excited, wish I had an extra battery though, it'd be nice
8hrs 15min till i get mine!
Gotta say this thing blows my old Moment's battery out of the water... 4.5 hours hard and heavy use... 60% left - no 4G coverage area (but it was left on by accident - ooops) and no video watching, but heavy text, email, and facebook/twitter activity.
I ordered the extended slim battery from seidio.com. 1750 vs 1500. Should give a bit more in the long run.
Its been decent for me though. Just dont jack up your brightness, keep it on auto.
Wifi kills my battery. The signal never settles even though the coverage should be good all over my house.
You want to go into advanced wifi settings and change WiFi sleep policy to never otherwise your phone will shut off WiFi after 15 mins of screen being off and you'll be using 3g which will use a lot more battery.

Its already set to never.
Mybattery was pretty terrible. Lose 10% per 40 minutes on standby mode alone. After messing around with it for a while I discovered the culprit was the location services. I turned them off and now I lose about 2% per hour on standby.

I'm curious, how exactly do you go about turning off the location services? Unless it's included with the GPS tab of the settings, I haven't been able to find such an option on my brother's Hero.

It's under settings , location and then location setting. This does not disable the 911 location which is good.
