Flashiing with USB3 port & cable likely to cause brick? - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

I've read of at least one person saying usisng a USB 3 port bricked their PH-1. Have seen other posts saying same on other phone threads but wonder if really due to other issues eg poor cable (like Essentials one!), using port not on motherboard etc Just trying to judge risk.
I now only have laptops with only USB 3 ports. i have a high quality 6" (15cm) Belkin data cable.
How many of you have flashed succesfully with USB3 ports? Is it a higher risk than normal?

I also heard about this being a (potential?) issue. However, I have been using a laptop with USB3 ports (Dell Latitude E5440) for the last couple of years without any problems. I successfully flashed my PH-1 from this laptop at least a dozen times. It does have one USB2 port, but I never used it, and always connected to one of the two USB3 ports. I only used USB2-compliant cables, though (4-pin B connectors).

Thanks mate, hopefully I'll not have any issues either!

Is the HD extremely picky on USB connections?

I have used several WM phones before this, the two last were Atom and Atom Life. But this phone does not want to play ball with the USB extension cables I've been using all the time. First: No, the cables are all right: I can still sync my Atom Life without any problems. And I have used the original USB cable for the HD that comes with the box at the end (even though I've heard that syncing works just as well with a regular mini USB).
But neither a 3 m long extension cable (which is well below the 5 m USB limit) nor plugging it into a USB hub helps. Sometimes I can get a bit further with unticking the "advanced network" part of the USB to PC connection. But not allways. Has anybody here found a solution to that or even had the same problem?
Mine works fine on a Belkin 5 metre extension cable.
I can only sync with the cable that came with the phone. Other mini USB cables (ones that fit but are a different shape) only charge.

r u serious?! damn..!!! i've never tried it with the HD. my touch pro used to work perfectly with non-factory mini usb cable...
This happened to my HD.
Phone call to orange later and they insisted on replacing it under insurance.
All they wanted to check was whether the HD and PC would sync. I told them no and the response from the script that they have to work through, was that the phone is marked as "broke" and needs replacing.
In my case I suspect that the USB port may have been damaged when the car charger cable was pulled out accidently in the car with some force. Seems that they are a little delicate, especially with none HTC cables (i.e. without the odd shaped plug with only one corner truncated). I have read that non HTC ones fit a little less snug and can put stress on the board inside the phone when plugging / unplugging.

You hit that on the money. I see it as a design flaw as well as a scheme to get people to buy HTC-specific accessories. But you are right, generic cables with the different connector do fit loosely and can cause issues after time if you are not gentle with it. Also, the USB connector itself on the device and internally on the solder points is poorly designed. This doesn't help.
I can sync with any cable, but it seems to be to problems:
1. If the extension is too long, it will fail.
2. If it's run by more than one USB hub it will fail. The first hub is a Toshiba docking station with a one meter cable from the laptop. The second is a D-Link powered USB hub. No matter what cable I use then it won't sync. With the cable connected to the Toshiba docking I can sync both with a regular mini USB and the original cable. Strange thing is that it only works on one of the two the front USB connections and not on one of the four at the rear! Then again Windows isn't supposed to be logical, I guess...
Normal miniusb cable works perfectly for either charging and syncing.
I even had a 7m usb cable (5m and a 2m usb extending cable), worked perfectly for either charging and syncing (I need my phone to be next to my bed, and my PC is like a few meters away from my bed).
Seriously don't know how your HD refuses to work with a cable other than the stock HD USB cable.
Hi,
are you using a custom ROM?
i used all sorts of cables, whatever happens to be lying around, infact i never use the stock one, as this is plugged it at a very inaccesable wall socket for mains charging!
generally my cables go through a hub, and then a 1m extension.
the reason i ask about the ROM is that i have flashed loads of different ROMS, and all worked fine, except one ROM (think it was topix 2.6), where it would only connect for a brief moment before auto-disconnecting. i suspect it was a 'bad flash' as they say, and so if you are using a custom ROM would suggest a re-flash. if not, you could consider a hard reset, or trying a different ROM (perhaps if it the stock ROM it has a 'bad flash' at the factory)
Tom
This thread has been hijacked (I never asked about regular mini USB versus the proprietary HTC version), but if you're asking me, I'm using the latest official HTC version (Norwegian).
mine is not picky at all...
Thank god, I checked with a mini usb that came with my external HDD and it worked perfectly...
I tried 3 other cables and none of them work apart from to charge.
I'll see if it's an issue with using my hub.

No i'll try that when I get home.
Thanks
I have this issue with a specific cable on vista64, the phone only charges, but if I connect it to a Ubuntu box, I can sync, share network etc.
I think M$ is the issue in that case.

Micro USB cable issues

I have a Staples micro usb cable that works fine with my phone as far as data and charging.
I just got two generic cables, both 3' in length (like the Staples cable), and both will charge the phone, but neither will allow for data. And yes, they are data cables, not just charging.
I've actually noticed this same issue with external hard drives. Lower quality cables won't work many times, especially with bus-powered drives.
Just thought this may help people having issues connecting their phones to the computer. You may need a better cable.

Samsung USB-C Cable is Unique?

TLDR: I am only able to achieve a stable data connection using the Samsung usb-c cable that came with the phone. I've had my S8+ since the first day it was available in the US, Apr 21. And I've had this problem since that day.
Details:
When I plug my phone into a computer (transfer files, etc) or my car (Android Auto), it always works fine with the Samsung cable. It almost never works with any other usb-c cable I've tried, seeming to succeed only if the cable sits just right in the port. If it happens to work, and I move the phone/cable at all, it stops. On a computer, the "you plugged in a device" dialog pops up over and over again really fast (1 hertz).
I've tried it with both usb 2.0 and 3.0 ports on a couple towers and 3+ laptops
I've tried at least 3 different kinds of cables and at least 10 total cables. The cables don't sit loosely in the port or anything. They fit snug and hold fast, as I've come to appreciate about usb-c.
The other cables all work fine with other usb-c devices I have -- Pixel phone, Nexus 6p, Nexus 5x, Chromebooks, Nintendo Switch controllers
Charging works fine 90-95% of the time with other cables. When it fails, it slow charges, saying "Ensure the cable is plugged in properly" or something like that
I see articles online encouraging purchase of all kinds of non-Samsung usb-c cables to use with the S8
I would conclude the port is loose, but the cables all fit snugly, and the Samsung cable *always* works. I don't have to wiggle it in the port or anything--no effort at all.
This hasn't been a big deal for me until this week. I have usb-c cables all over the place I can charge with, and I carry the Samsung cable in my backpack for when I need a data connection. But now I have a car with Android Auto, and want to keep a valid cable in there.
Has anyone else experienced this? I searched around some, but couldn't find anything.
I'm using three different brands of type-C usb cables, micro usb cable+included adapter (micro usb to C). All are working fine.

It's a big I aqh3 I'm 99.9% positive. My MacBook pro power cable is as good as they come but it flaps like 3x then just says fail on my phone screen despite it working fine lol. It does not do this on for example the eng rom for root
I bought 3 type c cables from 3 different manufucturers. Only one of them doesnt work as advertised. Whenever i plug the phone with the cable the humidity sensor is switched on and it tells me the phone port is wet and i can not charge. Cant fidn any logical explanation but thats what i get

I experience the same problem. I haven’t tried the original cable. I just gave up on PC cable cause I never really needed it. I just wanted to use my usb c desktop connector to feel cool since usb c isn’t popular on a desktop yet. But yea constant disconnects unless you plug it without moving it, a slight wind can blow and cause it to disconnect. If the OEM cable works no problem, I’ll just buy one from a4c android store or amazon.

Why would a cable not be recognized/charge at all?

I have purchased some cables (usb-C to usb-A) and was surprised not to have them work at all on my 6T. I'm aware of the general usb-c problems, and the fact that "fast" charging is only available via the OEM Dash charger cable combo, but all of the other non-OEM cables/chargers have at least been recognized, allowed data transfer, and charged the phone, all be it, at the slower rate.
Is this a common problem? I'm interested in some of the technical details. What is the negotiation protocol for the microcontroller on the phone that would actually decline to acknowledge the connection at all? Has there been a driver/software update that identifies the current/resistance on the cable as a mismatch for the phones tolerances? I thought that the brick circuitry itself managed power delivery...
Just FYI, I have the OEM cable/charger which work fine. I also have a belkin cable and numerous other chargers (5V/5mA , 5V/1A , 5V/1.5A , 5V/2A , 5V/2.4A , 5V/4A) with which I get a data connection and basic/slow charging, which is really all I need. I used these new cables, supposedly rated to usb 2 and 5V/2A, on all of these chargers and my PC with no recognition/charge at all.
Thanks for insights.
Are you sure it's not just bad? I always slow charge my devices so I pretty much always use aftermarket cables, they work fine on the 6T. I use the same cables on my 6T across many devices, it's not an issue. Have you tried this cable on another device?

Distinctly possible. I tried on both, the only two, devices i have that use usb-c. This was a relatively cheap multipack from usual questionable sources, I tested several of the cables and all failed the same way on both devices across all the different bricks mentioned. Cables had reasonably good reviews, and I thought it unlikely that they were all bad. Just wanted to lob in question to see if there was another potential issue to be wary of.

Shouldn't be. I use several different brands of cables, no issues. I know I'm always skeptical of reviews at alot of places because so many of them are fake. What brand cable is this?

Are you testing all with the same power source? I know some power bricks or USB ports in vehicles vary. My wife's Kia only charged her LG G7 but no other devices including my OP6T. That's why I stick with the OnePlus car charger and power brick

Dead usb port?

Hi guys, I'm new here and could really use some help
I finally upgraded to the 6T from my OP2 yesterday. I got a T mobile variant (in great condition) and wanted to convert it to international. The problem is I can't seem to connect it to any computer. I have tried 5 computers and 3 different cables, the phone just doesn't get detected. USB preferences remains grayed out and windows doesn't even detect something is being plugged in.
I have tried installing the OP drivers, and qualcomm drivers, made no difference.
I also noticed that the usb-c to headphone jack doesn't output any audio through my earphones. Dash charging isn't working either.
Is my usb port damaged? It seems like theres no data going through it at all

Well if it's not even charging or playing audio then yes, I'd wager the USB Port is damaged.

Regular charging works, just not dash charge. And the buttons on my earphones can play/pause music, but there's no sound output. I've been reading a few pixel forums, this seems to be a common issue with pixel 3's. Was just hoping to see if others here have faced similar issues and how they got around it
Have you tried to clean port with toothpick or brush also your dash lead or charger may be faulty, dash charging will only work with dash lead and dash charger. Also usb type c are prone to failure i would clean and replace lead and go from there before juming to charge port replacement, if necessary ctdi in poland do a great job and authorised repairs for oneplus
