Update to oos 11 and keep root - OnePlus 8 Pro Questions & Answers

Hey lads, i wanted to update to oos 11 and keep magisk root, I saw a video tutorial on how to do that but on a previous oos update.
By installing the update without rebooting and installing magisk on inactive slot after OTA.
This sadly didn't work for me so now I am stuck without root access on oos 11.
Do I need to reflash magisk boot.img again or could there be another way to enable it?
Flashing boot.img will delete all my data and apps and I would really hate installing all that again one by one manually...
Any tips on what I can do?
Thanks.

1. It didn't work, because you took the wrong magisk version. Latest canary or beta works great with A11. I did it myself without issues.
2. There is only one way to get root. Patch the boot.img and flash it.
3. And no, flashing boot.img won't delete anything!

Ohhh.. Thanks! I just realized that it wasnt boot.img that would delete my files as you said, and have now updated to oos 11 with magisk and safeteynet passed. Thanks.

I have a guide for this in the guides section..step by step.

For others with the same question and find this thread instead of the guide: Switch to beta update channel in magisk -> download and install OTA without rebooting -> magisk flash to inactive slot -> reboot & enjoy

Like I said, I have a guide for this.

[GUIDE] How to get Magisk Root & Xposed on Oreo 8.0 (STOCK)

I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOUR DEVICE BRICKS, SD CARD DAMAGES OR NUCLEAR WAR STARTS.
Rooting method described below will work on Oreo-running devices ONLY (confirmed on build OPN27.76-12-22 and on OPNS27.76-12-22-9).
Please follow all steps very carefully and make sure you downloaded correct versions of all .zip files mentioned in my instruction!
ROOT (SafetyNet test will PASS!)
1. Download all files listed below:
- twrp-3.2.3-0-addison.img (CLICK)
- Magisk-v17.1.zip or newer if availabe (CLICK)
- f2fsfix-2018.9.2.zip (CLICK)
2. Flash TWRP using Fastboot:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.2.3-0-addison.img
3. Flash Magisk-v17.1.zip (or newer if available).
4. Go to TWRP/Settings and open Terminal.
5. Run both of following commands:
Code:
echo KEEPVERITY=true>>/data/.magisk
echo KEEPFORCEENCRYPT=true>>/data/.magisk
6. Flash f2fsfix-2018.9.2.zip
7. Reboot (it is crucial in case of installing Xposed afterwards).
8. Optional but recommended: update your Magisk Manager to the latest version (CLICK).
9. Open Magisk -> Modules and update f2fs-loopback-bug-workaround module to the newest version (can be done only via Magisk Manager only if new version of f2fs-loopback-bug-workaround module is available).
10. Enjoy rooted Oreo.
UPDATE 03.10.2018
If you flashed everything as described in OP and noticed that you got stuck in boot, go to TWRP again and:
1. Uninstall Magisk using latest Magisk uninstaller.
2. Flash Magisk 17.1.zip AGAIN (yes.).
3. Flash f2fsfix-2018.9.2.zip
4. Enjoy rooted phone.
PS. I do not know why device does not start after first flashing to be honest, but these four steps above are confirmed by several users (and by me).
UPDATE 03.10.2018
XPOSED (be careful: Xposed for Oreo is still in BETA distribution and flashing it will break your SafetyNet!)
1. Open Magisk Manager -> Downloads.
2. Download Xposed Installer (the one from the screen below):
https://image.ibb.co/byLUuK/Xposed_Framework.png
3. Let Magisk install it.
4. Reboot.
5. Open Xposed Installer (you will see orange exclamation mark, don't worry).
6. Reboot once again.
7. Voila.
Hit THANKS if I helped!

@rafikowy ah, so basically the problem was with dm-verity and forced encryption? That makes sense. So it would basically also work if you'd not extract the boot.img from the OTA zip and mod it with Magisk manager with both enabled and flash that (might be easier than flashing normal Magisk and then make the changes), so you'd basically just flash the img and the module zip in TWRP.
Well, if no bigger bugs appear I might try the Oreo OTA and root tomorrow. Don't think it will be here on its own till then, even if it's already the official rollout (Indian and brasilian users seem to get it officially)
First magisk manager did not want to open, but a reboot solved. thanks
So, Lenovorola is still "undecided" in regards to patching F2FS.
I wonder why...

Only a Soak test is available, the link is in the thread in the ROM section. And yes, it doesn't seem to update your bootloader, it was already successfully testet to go back to 7.1.1

I gone back to 7.1.1 Nov patch and everything is OK with my IMEI. Just flash 7.1.1 Plus ROM with TWRP. One issue what I have - In can't mount OEM partition in TWRP.
Could someone provide a TWRP backup of the 8.0 Soak? I've modified the system partition and this method stoped working. All the 8.1 roms have a so bugged camera, I don't wanna go back to them

Nope. It's impossible for now. You can`t go back to full stock, because you'll lose your IMEI with flashing full 7.1.1 FW with RSD or fastboot.

So i just got the phone three days ago but maybe try rebooting your phone to TWRP or if you don't have it installed on your recovery go to a computer and launch ADB, what you want to do is temp boot into TWRP then sideload Magisk again.
To make things easier:
=============================
1. Boot into TWRP (Either through recovery or ADB)
2. Get your yourself the stock boot.img to clear things up on Magisk's end.
3. Sideload your Magisk zip.
4. Clear cache and dalvik cache
5. Reboot the phone.
If you don't flash a stock.img of the current OOS you are on safetynet may fail but reinstalling Magisk through TWRP should fix your safetynet issue. As far as WIFI goes try flashing the modem.img file for your current OOS version, this might do the trick but i am not so sure as this is my first time using a oneplus device.
Hope i have helped you out. Don't take OTAs, they break root as an OTA is just for stock OOS with no root so there is no support for rooted devices when it comes to these updates.
Edit: Try this if it doesn't work https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6t/how-to/9-0-7-patched-magisk-boot-img-t3875498

I uninstalled magisk, did the regular OTA update, do not reboot, then install Magisk again on the inactive slot.
Ok fixed the problem I was having.. I had to do a complete factory wipe after installing Magisk. It's now working and I am using Oneplus Switch to restore my data backup now.

How to install twrp temporarily?

My stock rom has a wifi problem and I want to flash a fix via twrp, but I still want to obtain ota updates. Is booting into twrp via command prompt temporary? Like once I exit twrp without flashing installer zip it would be gone, right?
Sorry, for the noob question. I'm still new to a/b devices.
Try
fastboot boot twrp (the name of your twrp-image)
I am using this all the time to uninstall / install magisk and do an OTA-update inbetween

If you are worried trying PIE, flash OREO (Nov 2018) and then do an OTA-update before rooting with TWRP and MAGISK

How to update to the latest version?

Ok so i'm running now OOS Stable 10.0 with TWRP running, and Magisk ofc.
Now, i used this guide -
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6t/how-to/guide-how-to-twrp-data-decryption-t3995861
To update from 9.0.17 to 10.0
But never tried to update from 10.0.
Can i update like the usual process ?
Enter Recovery > Flash ROM > Flash TWRP > Flash Magisk ?
Or i need to do it differently .
Edit : I want to update from 10.0 to OB3.

It seems complicated enough for people to catch up with only one logical method, I dare not imagine what it would be if there were different procedures....

If you do it this way make sure you update to the latest version of TWRP that was released today (3.3.1-30) before upgrading the ROM.
Open magisk manager and restore boot.img.
Update locally in system settings.
Dont reboot.
Install magisk to inactive slot in magisk manager.
Reboot and provit.
No need for twrp.

You don't need boot.img. Magisk automatically backups the original boot.img and patches it. That way you can restore it thru magisk manager. And patch the new boot.img (install to in-active slot) after local upgrade.

Well, that doesn't answer the question: why do you need TWRP?
The problem is that you ask for a recipe, without knowing clearly what you're doing when applying the recipe.
Yes you can update with local update while keeping Magisk and twrp. See first posts of OOS 10.0.1 thread in Guide section.
Yes you can update from within twrp, the way ROMs are fleshed since nearly a decade
Yes you can flash twrp with Magisk manager, since months it's a basic knowledge.
No you don't need stock boot.img
Don't follow the guide you quote WHICH WAS WRITTEN WHEN NO WORKING TWRP was available for A10. It's outdated now. Use regular and classical procedures

IMHO, i recommend using stock OOS and root only. Because it already is a great rom. You can flash certain extras with magisk manager anyway.
But whatever rows your boat

The answer is in the post you quoted:
'Yes you can flash twrp with Magisk manager, since months it's a basic knowledge"
What I did was open Magisk Manager - go to Modules - click Add (+) - select the TWRP installer (zip) - exit Magisk Manager - reboot to TWRP - reinstall Magisk.
There might be a way to reinstall Magisk from Magisk Manager to the active slot but I'm not sure so I did it through TWRP.

updating to latest OTA 11.0.1.1.IN11AA

I have unlocked bootloader + root with magisk. Is there anything special I need to do before letting the OTA update? What about afterwards, will I need to re root?

If you update then the kernel gets done too.
If you have modules installed disable them first.
You'll be fine.
PS: so are you on ob3 or 11 stable?
I'm rooted with an unlocked bootloader on 11.IN11AA (Global). How do I perform a local upgrade without the OTA file to put into the root folder? It seems like the Global version of the OTA file is nowhere to be found and I can't download it via System Update since it fails due to root. Do we need to just wait for the 11.0.1.1.IN11AA OTA zip file to be posted? Thanks in advance.

I just updated and kept root. I used to use this method on my Pixel 2 XL when I didn't want to flash the images, or was away from my PC.

The link should work now.
Disregard the TWRP part (skip Step 4....go from Step 3 to Step 5).

^^^^^^This -- easiest and fastest root upgrade I have ever done on any device.
Magisk is now built to do it this way.

This worked for me as well taking the actual partial OTA update from system update and going through the steps in Magisk.
A little nerve wracking considering the many times trying to update has failed on my last couple OP devices, but at least this time, it worked.
Thanks.
anyone have a patched magisk boot for IN2025?
I did the steps of flashing the stock boot.img, then booting the patched img, installed the OTA, used magisk to patch before reboot, but when it rebooted it said installation failed, and i was unable to access magisk after that as it was on the wrong slot... I had to apply the OTA update again, and now am stick without root
IN short, need either a stock IN2025 boot image to patch myself, or a magisk patched one...
TIA
