Hi all.
I just got this phone from swappa in July, and I really like it. Coming from a Pixel 3 which is also a 2 year old phone the 6t is so much better. However, as I was watching youtube one night, the video froze, and the phone was just giving out a "zzzzz" loud noise, not dissimilar to the noise you'd get from a bsod back in the day. I forced restart by pressing all the buttons, and it was stuck on the Tmobile magenta boot up screen, with some visual artifacts (stripes, reminiscing of a GPU dying). It would boot that up, freeze for a few seconds, and then go into a boot loop. The phone would boot into fastboot and recovery, but not able to boot up.
As a last resort, I flashed MSM and 9.0.11. I was able to flash it, but the reboot after flash resulted in a coredump from qualcom with code 0x00000000 (do not count the 0). I rebooted it again, I was stuck on the red dot boot up screen with similar problems as on tmo ROM: it would freeze up, and then reboot again. I then tried flashing 9.0.13, and the same thing. I had put off fastboot unlocking the phone, so I cannot enable developer mode now. As a result, I cannot unlock bootloader after flashing 9.0.11.
So my question is, am I stuck with a dead phone? I've essentially tried 2 ROMs and I can't get the phone to boot up. Given the manifestation before it had died, I don't think this is salvageable. I could wait for the fastboot unlock code from tmobile, unlock it, and then flash everything, but is there a point to it? Could I even sell this on Ebay?
Thanks ahead of time.
I think the failure scenario you describe answers your question. It is not as if you were messing with the software and it caused a brick. Something on the hardware side failed while you were using it fully stock and it is gone. You could send it in for repair with OnePlus but it would likely be cheaper to just buy another on swappa. Not sure why you decided to get a tmo branded when buying used on swappa though? regardless this is probably simply a case of bad luck.

Back in July the price was sky high. There was no international version anywhere. Perhaps I'll get a 7t this time. I think it's a bad luck too. the phone was practically brand new.

This is depressing, out of nowhere this big ugly glaring green pixel is here and won't go away
I've only had this phone for 2 months (The AT and T build sucks by the way compared to T mobile, screen atleast)
Now I wanted to ask, ive unlocked the bootloader so technically no warranty, but as this is a hardware problem ...nothing due to unlocking would cause this right
nothing on CYanogen..nothing on set cpu (which installed just 2 days ago and started using , that's why I suspect it)
but its not like my phone was over heating
Any ideas...does anyone know how nice HTC Support will be over this..or am I stuck with this
Thanks
PS: Is there a way to relock the bootloader, that is get rid of that unlock logo at boot?

eesh sorry to hear that.
Your two options are...
1. Claim warranty exchange without telling them it's unlocked. I've read some cases of people getting away with this. My only concern with his is that I'm afraid someone at HTC will charge me for a motherboard replacement on the old phone once they find out it's unlocked. But again some people have gotten away with it.
2. Be honest and tell them it's unlocked...which is what I did BUT it was a very long battle with HTC to get my phone under warranty. They automatically will try to charge you $196 to replace the motherboard because of the unlocked bootloader. A new motherboard technically puts you back under warranty but at the cost of $196. I had to start a case with a better business bureau and after about a month of fighting on the phone on daily calls they finally sent me a new phone without even telling me they were. I guess their way of telling me to shut the hell up.
Unfortunately, there's no way to relock your bootloader. And because of my horrid experience I never unlocked my second Nexus. I'm glad I didn't cause my power button broke a few days ago and the warranty exchange was a lot easier with a locked bootloader.
Good luck.
Some people with unlocked bootloaders have had better luck conacting google about the warranty exchange. There's a thread around here where someone details the process.
That is big/bright! I had a defective pixel and it was way smaller than that. That looks almost like a cluster of them.
If you had tmobile I would say file a lost phone claim if you had the insurance on it.
Since paying 130 is cheaper than 200 lol.
Like the 2nd poster said, just call and don't tell em and see what happens.
I think my MyTouch 4G may be another casualty to the bad emmc chip but wanted to ask you guys just to be sure. This morning I woke up and noticed the alarm didn't go off on my phone, so when I picked it up everything seemed normal. However, when I tried to read a text message it forced closed, then it forced closed the launcher and if I tried to open any other app it forced closed. I tried to hold the power button down to do a reboot, but that didn't work (the pop up screen never came up). So I took the battery out and put it back in, the phone hasn't booted since. I've tried holding volume down and power button, but still nothing. Do you think the phone is bricked? If so, do you think it's the emmc chip issue?
Note: It won't boot when it's hooked up to the charger either, the guy at T-Mobile said there is an issue with the phone. The phone was rooted using GFree method because no other method would work. This phone has the bad EMMC, T-Mobile is sending me a replacement phone.
This sounds exactly like what happened to me. I rooted my phone successfully using the gFree -permaroot method. I then proceed to flash the engineering bootloader and after the battery pull I am no longer able to turn on my phone. I tried booting in HBoot but I get nothing. The LED doesnt light up when I plug the phone into a power source either. If I hold UPVOL+PWR the phone vibrates 4 times quickly and the led light starts flashing, but nothing happens after that. I have called T-Mobile to get a new phone and it is on backorder, so I do have some time before they send me a new one but I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to unroot it? Or is my phone bricked? Will T-Mobile void my warranty and make me pay the full price of the new phone? If anyone has any experience with this or can lead me to somewhere where I can fix this problem, I would greatly appreciate it.
mwilliams05: Sorry to threadjack but this is the only thread I saw that was similar to my situation. Let me know what happens with your phone.

Call customer service and LT them overnight you a phone then etyrn the one you have. They will never find out it was rooted.....its dead! Just let them know it wouldn't boot up all of a sudden. The emmc chips are going out alot. I was lucky enough to get a good one and sold my phone 3 weeks ago.
Yeah the phones on backorder..i wonder why lol. This Mytouch that just broke on me was a replacement from Asurion, it was most likely a refurb or something. But thanks, appreciate the help!

I received my replacement and it has the bad emmc too. I don't think tmobile will know the phone was rooted from what ive heard from others.

The SAME thing happened to me! I also used the gfree method. I just want to know do you have to unroot your phone before you can send it back for a replacement because can't they tell you bricked it trying to root by your S=OFF?

If the phone wont boot up, I don't think they will be able to tell you rooted it. When I spoke with a Tmobile customer service rep he said the extended warranty (which I purchased for an extra $4/mo) covers the phone as long as it's not water damaged or physically damaged, which I felt meant if the phone is bricked, it's covered under warranty. That was one of the reasons I rooted knowing I had the bad emmc chip.

They can still tell if it's rooted. ClockworkMod recovery is still there, and if the phone has the engineering bootloader, that will also be a dead giveaway. The thing is, I don't think any of that matters. My friend has been a VZW customer service manager for years and swears that they don't care if it's rooted. He says they rarely actually try to boot a phone that's been returned, and if they do, being rooted is a non-issue. I know TMO could have a different policy, but since it's TMO known for their customer service, not VZW, I would assume they'd be even more lenient about returns.

How do they know if clockwork mod recovery is on the phone if it wont turn on? The phone I just sent back wouldn't power on at all. Is there another way for them to find out it's been rooted if the phone won't turn on (I.e. nothing is displayed on the screen) ?

i can back this story up
my phone just took a **** on me a couple days ago with cache errors due to eMMC being the bad one...i worked for 3 hours to unroot the damn thing cause adb or my phone was being a complete asshole...after i unrooted the phone i went to the local tmo store and talked to the dudes up there and they pretty much said...tmo doesnt care if they get rooted phones cause they all get sent back to HTC or Samsung to get refurbed...he said water damage or physical damage is a different story

You didn't say it doesn't turn on. You said "it doesn't boot." Usually when people complain about a phone not booting, it still physically turns on, but ends up going to recovery or the bootloader, or hangs at the myTouch screen. If it won't turn on at all, they can't tell if it's rooted, but my guess is they can get it to turn on even if you can't. However, as the posts above explain, it doesn't really matter because they don't care whether it's rooted or not.
Rooting = voiding warranty is a myth?
So is it safe to assume when you root your phone, it doesn't actually void your warranty because the phone doesn't have physical or water damage, right?
I have had my 6P for a little more than a year now and haven't had an issues with it. I just upgraded to Android O when if finally dropped and haven't had any issues.
I also had installed Magisk 13.6 and TWRP with an unlocked bootloader.
Today I was trying to take a picture when my phone suddenly froze and didn't respond to any buttons. Finally I had to hard power it down and now it won't turn on at all.
It shows nothing on the screen regardless if I'm trying to charge it or holding down the power button it remains totally black.
I noticed two other threads with the exact same freeze and then dead scenarios just now when looking to post this and am afraid that this might be a brick however I just thought I'd ask before signing it off as dead.
Should I contact Google customer support for something like this or since it is out of warranty am I just boned?
I got mine from the Google Store and I did get the warranty but I can't remember how long it lasted.
EDIT:
When I purchased my phone I decided to get the Nexus Protect for it so since I bought it in March of 2016 that should make it still under warranty
I'm going to go ahead and file the claim since I don't think it's going to live again
Mine is exactly same age give or take a month only mine was not modded in any way. I think a google patch is bricking phones. Mine not long updated
My same problem, I just ended up getting a new one..Huawei won't repair mine since it's got an unlocked bootloader, and the repair times would still be 15-20 days
I had the same problem. I send it to Hauwei and they changed the phone. Same time. A little more than a year.

I purchased an Essential Phone PH-1 from BestBuy. The first had issues, so I returned for another. I dropped that one and broke the screen, and got a new warranty replacement. The replacement has poor call quality, the charge LED turns green at 90% instead of 100%. I saw here that someone said that is normal Android behavior... However, the two Essential Phones prior to this one turned the charging LED green when it was 100%, not 90%. None of the other brands I've owned over he years exhibited that behavior either.
The issues plaguing this phone have me wondering if their is a difference between the retail unlocked version of the PH-1, opposed to one purchased from a carrier unlocked. I ask because, this phone that drops calls constantly, and suffers from poor call quality, has Sprint System files in the ROM, and my carrier is AT&T. Does anyone else not using Sprint as a carrier have these files on their PH-1?
To view, Touch Settings, Data Usage, Cellular Data Usage... Then touch Android OS to check for the Sprint System Files in the picture below

Not entirely sure but I would think Sprint files are in all builds. Otherwise, there would be 2 versions of every update, system image, etc. And there's just one.

I remember that Pixel phone had Verizon files in the ROM as well. These are placed there in case user would be using the phone on Verizon and in your case on Sprint.
there are CSC files for every major carrier worldwide in all the ROM's
having said that...it is still possible that unlocked Sprint ones are different. Lots of problems with those, Sprint says they are working on it though.
edit: i have carrier unlocked one from Amazon and it has that Sprint file in there too. Let me check our S8 and see if it has it.
it does not
There is an OpenUS and Sprint variant. To see which, start the device in fastboot mode by holding volume down and power button during bootup. It will say. FYI, bootloader locked has nothing to do with anything (in case that cattches your eye)
If you paid full price, you should have been given OpenUS version. However, there is no hardware difference between the 2 versions other than Sprint should be locked until Sprint releases/unlock it.
Make sure you are on latest OS.
90% green is normal on all essential phones, and also Pixels. Sprint files are normal.
Hopefully you performed a factory reset before writing about your unsolved problems. Although issues with this phone exist, they are "consistent issues". Only exception is the speaker grill variance.

Unless you are like me, and seem to have a PH-1 that doesn't have any specified Variant. My phone came from Sprint, is SIM and UICC unlocked (though I noticed the Variant aspect even before it was UICC unlocked), and it just says " Variant - " (just blank, no Sprint or OpenUS)
I opened a support ticket with Essential to see what they think.
Phone works great on T-Mobile, Sprint, and Project Fi (via T-Mobile). I am not sure if it is just my phone, but if I boot up (after a fresh restore) without a SIM, the phone starts up (eventually) the Sprint OMA-DM software to try and register. I thought that was interesting. If I boot up with a T-Mobile sim (after a fresh restore for instance) everything works as you would expect, no Sprint DM software starting at all.
Thank you for your opinions...
However, I'm out! Essential phone is over for me and for many reasons. I posted here to see if maybe I missed something. Despite comments on the charging LED turning green at 90% being normal, I'm here to tell you it is not based on the phone I dropped for this replacement. The phone I dropped had great reception, this replacement does not! The dropped phone was also void of those "Sprint" files. It also had a different feel and seemed to weigh a little more than this replacement phone and that isn't my imagination either. Resetting the phone to factory settings twice, does nothing for the phone's issues and Essential tech support, like PH-1 accessories, are non existent. I should have just purchased a flagship Samsung and rooted it if possible to get rid of the junk software. You live and you learn...

Thanks for participating, sorry it wasn't the right phone for you. For me it is a little different as it isn't my primary device (i have a S8+), but for the $150 I spent through the Sprint deal, it was totally worth it for my 2nd line/backup device. I do like Essential's goal, and agree support isn't very fast, but eventually I do communicate with them after submitting a ticket. Again, not as big of a deal of me as it isn't my primary device.
I hope the phone is successful, and that Essential gets some of these bigger bugs worked out through software.
So today I was using my phone and went to plug in the charger and the phone locked up so I proceeded to force reboot it. Well from then it fell in to a constant reboot. So I force shut it down and tried to boot into the boot loader and factory reset. Now the phone will not boot what so ever.
UPDATE: So after going through all the trouble shooting with Essential they are going to exchange it under warranty even though I purchased it through swappa. It's really nice to see a company respond as quickly as they did and be pretty understanding of the situation.
Any lights if you plug it in? Does a computer recognize it?
Can you provide some context? Were you running stock or a custom ROM? Rooted? Bootloader unlocked? It would be helpful to know how your phone was set up before the possible brick.
Well I'm running the stock 8.1 rom. I was able to get it to boot after a while but, now I have the issue with the phone not charging past 52% . I've in contact with Essential and hopefully they will replace it.
It sounds like they should. Good luck.
Did you buy it new from Swappa? I am going through something similar but Essential said they cannot help me other than selling me a refurbished for $199

They warrantied it but, I got a certified refurb. Which I'm OK with.
