My power button has been going out the past few months, sometimes taking up to 5 times to turn it on. I'm guessing it will probably die soon enough. It probably would have died long before now if it weren't for me using trackball wake from CyanogenMod (but I still use the power button every so often such as when my hands are closer to the power button than the trackball).
Anyway, I called HTC recently and I'm going to do a swap. My warranty ends in just a few days, so I thought I'd get it fixed before then.
For those of us who bought the Nexus last January, the warranty is about to expire. Anyone else doing any service this week (or month) before it expires?
Motivated by you, I called HTC too about my power button issues. They told me swap option is not available to me (no idea why).
Since I have a few scratches on my screen too, I was looking forward to the swap option
My phone is unlocked so I did not request a repair on power button yet (I have 2 more months in warranty). I might wait and watch if the problem gets any worse.

They actually told me I was out of warranty (no idea why since I bought my phone mid-January). So he said he would put a note on it explaining that it has been less than 1 year so there's no reason why I'd be out of warranty.
Maybe call back and get someone else. If you bought it less than 1 year ago, the swap should be available. Or ask why they're saying it's not an option.

Aaah, thanks for that info. I called again and the reason they gave me that replacement is not possible because Canada charges HTC custom tax on the shipped phone which is why they are only doing replacement for Canadian phones.
However, he said that if I have a US address (which I do) then they can ship a replacement device to that address. Now I'm contemplating if I should go forward with this.
The two things that worry me are:
1) I have some scratches on my screen which are not covered under warranty
and
2) My bootloader is unlocked
Will these 2 things cause my phone to be out of warranty causing HTC to charge $500 on my credit card for the replacement device they send me?

Swap is not available to him 'cuz he lives in Canada (like me ).

I did a swap by using a friends address. HTC reps didn't care, and were actually the ones who suggested it to me. So if you can, have it sent to a friend/family member in the US and go pick it up from them if possible. At worst they'll have to ship it to you, but you'll also have to ship your phone to them so they can ship it back to HTC to complete the swap. HTC will only send you a shipping label good for within the US if doing the swap.
Is there really a hardware issue with the power button? I ask because I do sometimes have trouble getting my N1 to acknowledge a power button press and wake up but have never had a problem when I push the power button to put the phone to sleep. Wouldn't it have a problem both turning on and off? Whenever I have the problem it seems like the phone is busy, usually something to do with the radio switching between WiFi and cellular. Or do I have a different problem?
I'd guess swap isn't available for AT&T N1's

Ah, that makes sense. I didn't realize you were in Canada.
I didn't say anything about my unlocked bootloader Many people have posted and said HTC swapped their unlocked device without issue, so /shrug. Maybe they ding me, maybe they don't.

Yeah, power button failure seems to be a common issue. Supposedly there is a little plastic piece in there that gets worn out.
You're right; I've only noticed the power button failure when attempting to turn ON the phone... Hmm.. Could be the way the contacts inside are wired, who knows?

They were sold from March until around late summer. The warranty is a year long either way.
I'll be in the same boat in a couple of months. I got the ATT version the first week it was sold and my power button is completely gone out for the second time. The first time, I sent it in with Cyanogen installed and they didn't care. I opted for repair, but the repair is to swap motherboards so, if the phone isn't scratched up, there's not much difference between repair and replace.
I was going to swap after Christmas but I've been using trackball wake and Invisible Lock Widget for about a month and don't miss the power button anymore. But I'll still probably get it fixed before the warranty is out, no reason not to.

right, but they quit selling the AT&T version after they shut the online store down. you could only get the TMobile from the Google Dev store, so I assume that HTC isn't sitting on a surplus of devices to swap.. just a guess, but I bet AT&T devices get repaired, not a new IMEI

Maybe they have some stocked up because after giving them my IMEI (which is that of the AT&T model), he said if I have an address in US then I can get my phone swapped (new IMEI).

It was a few months ago but I got two swaps of my AT&T phone. The first one had a goofy screen.

I don't know, I just know what they said and did in my own repair experience. I asked if swapping meant I would get a new one or a refurbished one and they said it would most likely be refurbished because they rarely had new ones. This was months ago. Also, with a repair where they switch the motherboard, I think you actually get a new IMEI. Mine had a new IMEI anyway. I thought they switched phones until I read that the fix for a bad power button was to swap the motherboard, so I assume the IMEI is in it.
I had several scratches on my screen, an unlocked bootloader and chunks missing from the bottom and top of the phone where it was dropped. I did the swap option and I wasn't charged. As long as the screen scratches don't look worse than normal wear and tear I would think you would be fine.

My warranty wont be out for another year and a half I think, since Im in Austria, and European laws are some kind different. Anyway. My powerbutton hardly works and I would be very interested in anyone having experience with european htc. do they swap? do they charge? also could I send my phone to the us (friends) and get a replacement by the us htc since they seem kinda "nice". Im really not sure what to do. I get along with the lock screen widget and trackball wake but well a new phone doesnt sound bad either... so anyone knows anything about sending phones to the us from europe or replacing / repairing in the uk?

First I'll start of with my phone and the issues.
I bought my Nexus One AT&T version around June of 2010. Rooted it with without unlocking bootloader, ran a few different roms, then one day BAM vibration stopped working, but after a few screen on-offs or tapping my phone in my hand it would come back. After countless attempts to fix the issue such as master clears, flash back to original shipping, and finally in a last ditch effort UNLOCKED the bootloader so I had unrestricted access to rectify the problem. Nothing worked and finally had to accept the fact the little vibration motor had quit on me.
I called up HTC in December about the week before christmas and told them the problem which they agreed was a hardware issue. Not once did they ask if my bootloader was unlocked nor did I offer up that information. They offered me the two options of either a swap or send in my unit for repair. I choose the swap option for fear that they would get my phone, run tests, and not reproduce the issue since it was intermittent for me. Here is the scary part to do the swap they needed a hold on my credit card for $528.00 , risky to say the least since my bootloader was unlocked but seeing as it was hardware failure I was willing to risk it and hope the charge would drop off once they received the phone. In preparation to send my phone back I flashed back to completely stock removing root.
The next day the phone arrived FedEx . First thing I noticed was that my battery cover fit much more snug with no gaps and did not stick out just slightly above the top. Next the power button and volume buttons were much firmer. And of course the vibration was strong as an ox . Also to note it shipped with 2.2.1 (not D) and had the 5.08 radio, Hboot 35 and the AMOLED screen NOT SLCD. All in all the replacement seemed much better than my original, lol.
Now seeing as christmas was so close I wasn't able to FedEx it back to them (they provided the label) for almost a week. But once I sent it off it was overnighted to them and received without issue. Plus the hold on my credit card was also dropped!
So to sum it up I had an AT&T Nexus one with Bootloader Unlocked, bad vibration motor, got it swapped out under warranty, was not charged a dime, and am now even more of an HTC fan and happy to have a fully functional Nexus One.

I'm worried now because my power button isn't *totally* dead but the email they sent has the issue listed as "defective power button". So I hope they don't just press it once, see that it works, and call me a liar. I did tell the rep I spoke to that it was intermittent. Anyway, I hope my case works out like yours.
Mine is coming back from repair on Tuesday
I live in the UK and mine was piked up on the 30th Dec (phoned on the 29th) as my power button is dying slowly for the second time (first repair was in Sept '10 so not long ago!) and I was concerned that as I bought mine on the release date (5th Jan) I would be screwed if I left it any longer with only days left. That was until the lady at HTC UK told me that my warranty runs out on the 25th Dec 2011. Seems as an earlier poster mentioned that EU warranties are 2yrs which is nice for me.
I'm still wondering whats going to happen with this power button fiasco. The HTC agent wasn't aware of any known problem with them (not saying much really is it?) but said I could appeal the repair charges and some "arrangement" could be made (50% off or something to that effect). Anyway, that's just under a year away and I might start getting a bit pissed with them and start requesting that this isn't acceptable to keep sending my phone off every couple of months for 2 weeks at a time while a small part is replaced in my phone!
The first time it went back for the power button, (first time was in March for soft keys acivating when 1/3rd way down screen, got replaced for current unit with different touch screen revision) I had the phone unlocked with the infamous unlocked padlock symbol glaring at me every boot up. I sent it off and HTC just repaired the faulty button and flashed a locked 2.1 image, no questions (took almost a month to get back though!). Sweet! Now it was just a case of using one of the one-click root type apps and away I went.
Quick question guys: How likely is it that we'll get SLCD screens if we get a swap right now?
Anyone have success RMAing a phone in with an unlocked BL but no other mods? With all the red light of death stories I've read in the past couple of days I sure don't want to spend over $700 for one N4 that could do the same thing. (kind of wishing I got a Note II now!)

The Nexus 4 is available on the U.S Play Store as of time.
( it would be more expensive if it was in another country, but since you're using the dollar sign...)

No, I'm sorry. I had edited down my original question and now it doesn't make complete sense. What I meant was that my phone died on me but I left my bootloader unlocked after reflashing with the image from the developer.google site. I never rooted it but failed to lock the bootloader after reflashing. Now I have the red light of death.
The $700 comes from them holding $300 on my credit card during the RMA process, only to find that I've voided my warranty by having an unlocked bootloader and them charging me for it. That would be over $700 for an N4 that could just do the exact same thing again.
I honestly don't want this phone anymore if all of them are going to die after only a couple weeks use.
The phone is designed to be unlockable via a simple command, so the fact that you have done that should in no way invalidate your warranty. You should have no problem with an RMA.

I can't find the video (i'm at work) and I have it bookmarked at home, it's on xda tho, you must take out the back part and release a part of the hardware.. It's easy and the guy who found out made several examples, in which if he pressed that chip = red light appear, leaving it without much pressure = normal
I guess take the back off , remove the battery connector , reconnect the connector after a few minutes and put it on charge

Most everyone says that an unlocked BL voids the warranty, but it doesn't specifically say that in the warranty documentation. I think I'm going to let this thing run down as much as possible then try to connect to it over the weekend, then call Google on Monday if I have no success. Wonder if I should be upfront with the unlocked BL?
you haven't voided the warranty. Honestly, these companies rarely check for those kind of things. They don't have much time to investigate so they go straight to fixing it. I sent my rooted epic 4g w/ screwed up NV items (screwed em up while flashing) in for a fix and they fixed it for me no charge. You should be fine.
i have sent a few devices back for rma from google. each one of them had an unlocked bootloader, root, custom recovery, and a custom rom/kernel. google never gave me any issues with the process, and exchanged my devices within days. if its a hardware issue, they wont have any problems with an unlocked bootloader.

Hope you're right. I went through the RMA process on Monday after them having me try all the various button press combinations that I've tried a million times before. The return sticker they sent me was addressed to an LG repair center in Texas instead of any Google entity - that worries me.
I got my replacement on Thursday but I'm not even going to open the shipping box until I see the pending charges from Google drop off my credit card. If I do get charged then I'll try and sell this thing and cut my losses.
I'm very disappointed in the quality of the N4. I decided to only buy Nexus devices from here on out so that I can get the OS updates, but if they break after a couple of weeks then the only other option is to abandon Android altogether. Too bad because its the Google ecosystem that I like.

That's pretty radical to drop Android altogether, if you just wanted quick updates, why didn't you just leave it locked and stock?

First of all, I don't get it. Nexus has been great to me, and the 3 others I know who bought it, love it too. Build quality is good, and stock, no issues. Even if you root it, chances of something like that happening are low. I used to have all kinds of phones, from gs2&3 to note 2 to HTC one x. None of them were as hard to mess up as the nexus.
But as far as your original question goes... I rmad galaxy nexus to Google because my earpiece became very crackly. Mine was rooted and unlocked. I kept on putting it off until I realized that the label they sent was only good for 14 days. Ended up sending it rooted and with custom ROM on it, figured might as well try. No issues at all. They didn't say a word.

I reflashed stock firmware onto it in hopes of improving battery life - per a thread on this forum. For me, rooting is unnecessary on the Nexi because there isn't any manufacturer or carrier bloatware to get rid of. I honestly did consider rooting it to try an underclocking app to maybe improve battery life, but it seemed too much of a PITA.
They got my old phone last Wednesday, but the charges are still pending as of today. I decided to go ahead and open the replacement and not worry about it anymore. I noticed the replacement has a higher number serial number, so now I'm off to read the thread that tries do decode it!

To describe this as thoroughly as possible, if my phone is awake and I am using it and this happens, it will freeze whatever I am looking at but only the right side. If the phone is asleep and this happens when I wake it, the right half will be random colored lines and dots, like how televisions fuzz out on a channel you don't get. Pressing against the screen fixes it and it will function normal after that. Also I retain full touch control on that side during the problem. I would take a picture but it happens randomly and the note 4 is my only camera haha.
Any idea what causes this? I really don't want to pay 100 bucks to TMO to replace it, but I will if that is the only option. It is incredibly annoying. Thank you.

....That second image is my note 4 all over.
Half the screen goes haywire while the left side is frozen. I am unable to do anything to it at this point, and after holding several buttons...the screen goes black...still not able to do anything, and all of a sudden it restarts itself. Sometimes that fixes it for a few seconds. other times I have to remove the battery, wait a few seconds then it's alright for another few minutes. It happens no matter what I'm doing: watching a video, playing a game, answering a call, reading a text, responding to a text, or browsing the internet.
What I ended up doing was opening up the device and fiddling with the cables and connections.
Turns out there's a loose fitting connection in there that I couldn't seem to fit correctly back where it's supposed to go. Maybe there was an error in production and the parts do not fit together. Inside, there are two separate connections that connect the display to the motherboard. If both connections are not secure at the same time, it will simply not work. In my case, only one of the connections was loose. I was unable to fix it. Even though my device is out of warranty and has passed the 30 day return window (I bought it off Amazon), I managed to call them and they determined that it was a hardware failure and I already contacted Samsung customer support on this topic and they were unable to help me (since my model is 910F, the international/European version, they cannot help me) and they were able to create an RA to get a full refund for my phone. I decided I'm going to return it, and since the LG G4 is coming out soon, to just wait for that and ditch Samsung. LG has been good to me so far ever since I had my Nexus 4.
I had the same issue back when I bought my phone in October.
Went into my local Carphone Warehouse and replicated the problem to them and they sent it off for repair.
The repair slip just said that there was a hardware issue and that they had to replace the motherboard.
I believe Samsung offers a 1 year warranty so even if your store warranty has expired you can still get Samsung to fix this for you.

I would have had Samsung do it but when I called them they explained that they are unable to help me with my specific model of phone SM-910F (intl.) because it is manufactured for Europe, and that I would have to call Samsung UK to fix the problem/create an RA, and that would require me to be awake at 10pm- 8am or something stupid like that and make an international call to them and I did not want to have to deal with that. If they cannot fix a phone that I bought in the US and that I use in the US and it works fine in the US, then I would not like to do business with them any longer, seems like a stupid thing to do, manufacturing phones only for specific regions and telling people that they're out of luck when they have a problem with the phone if they're not using it in the region it was manufactured for.
so sadly my Note 4 has joined the group of devices with this frozen half grey screen and I am wondering whether anyone has a solution?

Still didnt find a solution so my Carrier asked that I send it in for repairs or replacement. I will keep you posted

same problem with my note 4 how can i fix it ???
Well it's a couple of months since my last update on this frisen screen issue. Sent it off for repairs and sadly the repair notice didn't indicate what was done. I can only say the report said it's a software issue and returned the phone updated to 5.1.1 from kit kat. Haven't had the issue since.

Ever since i got the zenfone 2 i have had problems, over the past 2 months they have been good, but recently, I've hardly been able to use it. Now, not at all. I've start problems the same day I got it. Now, this stupid problem I have is not booting, sometimes it does but it's hard to boot up (have to spam the power button). If i get it on I can't press the power button or it shuts off and reboots, there's no vibration or sound, I can't factory reset it, update it, or plug it into my computer and for it to recognize. I didn't even do anything to it. I was just playing Pokemon go, it died, and the problems occurred from there. All in all, 4/10, because still a great phone. I've tried everything there is to try, googled anything i can google, nothing has helped, and I need a replacement phone from Asus but doubtful they will give it to me. Sigh...
Even if you bought it used it should still covered by the warranty, send it in RMA

You're not the only one, almost all users experience that kind of problem on some of their bought devices, even Apple and other manufacturer smartphones.
Your chance is to bring it to your nearest Asus Service Center for warranty only if you bought it brand new with your receipt(on most smartphones, minimum warranty should last 1 year).

A guy in the news yesterday lost both legs playing pokemon.
Earlier this month, on a Sunday morning, my Nexus 5X crashed whilst playing a YouTube video. It then rebooted and stalled in the boot animation, then rebooted (rinse and repeat).
I immediately realised what had happened. Luckily my bootloader had been unlocked. I was able to use the 4-core versions of boot/recovery/TWRP (after several attempts to unlock my encrypted data partition) to get off some essential files, and then factory reset and relocked the bootloader.
After several attempts at online support (my tip: don't bother) I used the phone helpline (number on their website http://www.lg.com/uk/support/contact/telephone) and got through almost immediately to a very friendly operator who asked for IMEI and purchase date. It was less than a year since I'd bought the phone off an Amazon seller. Note that EU warranties are 2 years, not the 1 year on the website.
The operator asked for proof of purchase to be emailed. I used the Amazon order page (Print to PDF in Firefox) and emailed that. It took a couple of days for them to acknowledge the email.
The procedure then is for them to send out a box and plastic envelope to a nearby locker, which you then open using your mobile number and a PIN you receive via SMS. You then put the phone in the bubblewrap bag in the cardboard box provided and seal it in the plastic envelope. Then you send back the box using the barcode on the envelope.
Then you wait. LG UK keep you up to date with text messages, and phone if there's a snag.
It took about 16 calendar days in total from initial phone call, but yesterday I got back my Nexus 5X in exactly the same physical state as I'd sent it. Screen protector was intact and the sticker on the back was still there. The only thing that had been changed was the faulty mainboard. (IMEI is the same.)
OK, the fault shouldn't have happened in the first place, but the experience of dealing with LG in the UK was much less unpleasant than I'd feared.
PS. The first thing I did with it was unlock the bootloader again. That worked fine.
Just to add to the repair experiences, my wife's one packed up a few months ago and, as it was bought from CPW when they were virtually giving them away, took it to my local store. They sent it away, got notification to pick up a week later and, likewise, mainboard had been replaced. Also very impressed by the service and all good since.
Well, it was good while it lasted. I was watching a Youtube video this morning and suddenly... dead. Completely and utterly unresponsive. It lasted 16 days. Well, I still have another 13 months of the 2 year warranty left (and I have the warranty booklet which says so). Guess who I'm calling first thing on Monday?

No, it didn't. But nothing appears any more. The phone doesn't even draw any current when it's plugged into the charger. As described in the post above yours, it's now pushing up the daisies and has run up the curtain and joined the choir invisible.
I have just sent off my 5x to LG UK (originally purchased March 2016).
Anyone know if there is any warranty on the repair or is it just until the 2 years warranty on the phone expires?

Just to update, received the fixed phone with a new motherboard (and new IMEI) back from LG within 10 days of original phone call.
Pleasantly surprised.
