90 hz color issue - OnePlus 8 Pro Questions & Answers

Does anyone notice that the dark colors especially grey get significantly brighter when using 120hz compared to 60 hz. It's very annoying and can be seen when using the dark mode on WhatsApp or the dark mode of the phone and pulling down the notification shade. The greys become way too bright and the display seems washed out

Why not just use 120hz?

I have oneplus 8 now also same issue with 120 and 90 hz
The problem occurs when I use 120 hz or 90 hz , when moving between gray pages, the gray color glitch occurs so that it becomes brighter at times and then returns to decline on its own

Talking about the two devices, when using the 8 Pro with the 120hz and using the 8 with the 90hz , they face the same problem mentioned above ( I used 8 Pro in the past and now I use 8. I may have made a mistake in the details of the topic because I wrote 90 hz and got confused about it. )

Screen gamma test image, how low can you go

I made a test image to test how close to black your screen displays before clipping/cutting off. Display in any image viewer just make sure any brightness settings etc are all off/default/flat. Do the test in a dark room.
The numbers correspond to actual RGB values ie: 10 is R 10, G 10, B 10.
This is really effected mostly by firmware gamma curve settings not hardware.
The Note goes to 4 before cutting off, my Infuse goes dark at around 9! What crap gamma settings!
Theoretically you should be able to see number 1 (I could just make it out on my PC if I looked at an angle to the LCD).
How low can you go?
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/690/gammatest.png/
2 on my LCD
Freaking 5 on my iphone 4!
The Note cuts out COMPLETELY at 4, I mean nothing at all displays lower than that. It should gradually ramp to zero, not just cut out.
This explains the blocky tiles while displaying dark video. If there are shades 3,2,1 to smoothly blend they are not shown giving a stark defined tile.

The very dark shade should be explained by the encoding since Samsung uses a 24-bit display rather then a 16 or 32.

If you see the pic on the ImageShack site from your browser it goes to 1 if you DL the file and open then it stopes to 4 on the DL file it dissent scale as in the browser it prompt goes from light dark at 4 to black

I can see the 2 and almost the 1 in my note at minimum brightness. If you raise the brightness lower numbers become less visible as the border around them gets brighter. This display is very bright, I find minimum brightness more than enough for interior (home/office/metro/train).
I can see it till one

Same behavior with my note also, as Braxos noticed.
Can someone explain why the differences?
1. why through browser we can see until 1 and if we open the downloaded .png file we can see only until 4?
2. why the differences between galaxy notes? (some people here mentioned that they can see until 1 or 2 and some others until 4).
Thank you

Maybe the browser is changing the gamma slightly?
I would only trust the actual downloaded file viewed through an image viewer with no enhancements.
I am curious too as to why some can see down to 1 or 2. On mine there is a definate complete cut off below 4. Maybe different firmware versions are set different?
Mine is the Polish version.

actually never compared default viewer vs browser but i know default viewer is crap so i am not suprised browser shows better
I can see 1 in browser, and 4 in gallery. Below 4 it simply cuts off.
Maybe it's the same thing, as you set a black lockscreen wallpaper and desktop wallpaper, and the desktop looks good, while the lockscreen bad?

Cuts out at 4 in image viewer and 1 in the browser...
I'm guessing some people just saw it the browser and posted that they can see till 1...
The image gallery only displays 16-bit while the browser supports 24-bit. I believe that is why this happens.
I can see 1 in the stock browser but only 4 in opera. I didn't bother downloading and testing the stock image viewer but I suspect the results would be the same as everyone else (cut off below 4.)

Exactly
Google: Android 2.1 Downgrades Image Quality
And clearly, Android 2.3.6 still has a 16bit gallery.
At least we know it is not due to the display.
Mine also shows upto 4 on the default gallery and upto 1 using the stock browser, but with the stock browser the greys seem to be reddish.
What I noticed though is that my screen does not have really deep blacks, I can see it as a lit black like and LCD.. not major deal breaker or anything but wish I got one of those screens with deeper blacks. Also I see some speckles of darker area's when displaying the all black screen test.

Disadvantages of white balance

I found out that if the saturation setting is adjusted too much , usually above 10 , screen gets cloudy, icons and words becomes not so pin sharp. Any notice this? Correct me if I am wrong.

improving video brightness?

Hi,
I just bought a new G Pad yesterday and am really enjoying it, except for the video playback. As others have mentioned, the display becomes too dim and dark scenes are hard to watch. It pretty much ruins the whole experience of having a 1080p tablet.
I tried the screen adjuster app mentioned in another thread and that didn't do much for me. I also noticed when using the video app, when I would back out of a movie, just before the picture went away it would become very bright for a second. That makes me think there's something holding it back.
I was wondering if anyone found any solutions to this. I also do not want to root the device.

The g pad biggest problem is the gamma calibration that makes dark greys looks like deep black. For now, the only way I found to correct this, is to use screen adjuster with contrast value set at -28.
What we need to make the screen way better, is a custom kernel that makes gamma control possible.
In lg video player you can swipe up and down on left side to increase brightness
Sent from my One using Tapatalk
Yea but few minutes and the g pad is forcing the brightness down. I hate that, is there any way to modify something (f. Ex build.prop) and cancel that limitation?
Wysłane z mojego LG-P760 przy użyciu Tapatalk 4
I use MX player and no issues with brightness, although I often have it set to full.
Playing a video with the screen set to maximum brightness, the G Pad managed 5 hours, 53 minutes, while the Galaxy Note got 5 hours, 35 minutes, and the Nexus 7 got 7 hours, 37 minutes.

Clarity/resolution

The LG V60 ThinQ has a crazy crisp display. Just kidding, this is automated text so who knows if this screen is any good. So, you be the judge! A higher rating indicates that it's extremely sharp and clear, and that you cannot see pixels with your naked eye.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Very clear. The resolution is lower than my V30, I think, but it's not noticeable to me.
I honestly don't notice the lower resolution and because of that always had my previous phones set to 1080p to save battery.
Auto brightness has been a problem though, in low light the screen throttles back to 1% far too aggressively and 1% is too dim even in a pitch black room.
Sent from my LM-V600 using Tapatalk
The larger screen size and lower resolution combine for a noticeably lower DPI count, but I happen to think that higher (than 1080p) resolutions on (relatively) smaller phone displays are mostly a waste of battery life.
YMMV, but in my experience, there comes a point where the human eye can only resolve so much and the bump in the resolution of small screen displays just becomes overkill. I'll take battery life over resolution and even refresh rate any day, though I imagine higher resolution displays with higher refresh rates will only become more efficient over time, and I'll likely change my tune eventually.
I went from the V30+ to the V60 at the beginning of this month, and I feel like the new phone is a substantial upgrade over the older one in just about all categories that matter. And that's even considering that the former was rooted and the latter can't be!
The display is crisp enough, though clearly not cutting edge. Colors look at least as good as those of the V30. Viewing angles are fantastic without any noticeable (to me) color shift. It's probably the best we could have expected knowing that the display is relatively modest compared to this phone's 20202 (and some 2019) peers. And if you're fine with that, this shouldn't stop you from considering the phone. If, however, you DO want higher resolutions and higher refresh rates, you already know this phone's not for you and that you've got multiple options.

I'm seeing very drastic color shift when viewing at about 45°, more noticeable on white screens. It's a greenish yellowish shift.
Otherwise I agree with the rest of your post. 1080p is plenty resolution and I'm fine with 60Hz refresh.

Are there display variances across production runs, or something? Because I can't seem to reproduce this fault.
I'm not TERRIBLY sensitive to such things, but from what you say, it sounds like it should be blatantly obvious to the eyes.
And I don't suffer from any kind of color blindness that could possibly impact me.

Huh. How did you get a plain white background to show up like that? (I suppose I can Google one up).
I'd like to test my phone out and see if I can get similar results.
It's a little hard to see in a YT video, but I definitely noticed SOME shift on your screen that I don't think I've ever seen on mine.
I imagine the effect is even more noticeable in real life, with the phone right in front of you.

I use this app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iudesk.android.photo.editor
It's a photo editing app, but you can start a new image from scratch and select a background color. I set it to pure white, then zoomed in on it to fill the screen. It's definitely easier to see in person. I tried using by wife's Note 9 for the video, but I couldn't select a better refresh rate on it to prevent the banding.

I tried it out, and while I did notice a dimming or darkening of the white background at extreme tilts, I figure that's normal.
Doesn't quite look like what your YT video shows, but I'm not sure if that's down to the difference between watching a YT video of something and watching it yourself directly.
I've had the V30 and now this and I'm as happy with the screen on this one as I was with the V30. I couldn't care about the refresh rate. It's not like I'm watching a 60" screen. Overall it's a very good screen.

I pissed that it's 1080P, however, people who say a 90+ refresh rate is noticeable is just experiencing placebo.
The human eye will never notice that.

I've had higher resolution screens, and I can tell no difference between them and 1080p. Even 720p is hard to notice a difference.
When it comes to refresh rates, most people see a noticeable difference between 60Hz and 90Hz. My last phone was selectable between those two and 120Hz, and I couldn't tell a difference between 90Hz and 120Hz.
I can see the difference in resolution between the V30 and V60, it's just that 1080p on a phone doesn't bother me.
It falls in my "good enough" range. These aren't 55+ inch television displays, after all.
I also can definitely see the difference between a 60 Hz refresh rate vs a 90 Hz or 120 Hz refresh display.
my problem is with notifications in the top pull down... its virtually useless in landscape mode...

Clouding in low Brightness at 120 hz?

Hey guys,
today whilst using the device I realized the following. When I'm running it at 120 hz and low Brightness certain dark screens (not entirely black ofc) display massive clouding, similar to an IPS display. Unfortunately, I don't have a good enough camera to capture this for you.
I'm running dark themes pretty much everywhere. I also realize it during a Google search or here in the xda app(dark theme). Some screen areas are darker then others. It definitely doesn't look normal and also goes away if I turn off 120 hz/turn on 60 hz.
Can someone check very closely if that's the case with their display also, please? Do I have a faulty screen or is it just the technical screen limitations in general?
There was a thread on here somewhere about this and on the Telegram OP8 channel someone had it v bad and was returning their phone.
I was able to capture it with a dark (not black) picture. Of course my screen isn't glowing that much but you'll see the clouding / dark spots
