Quick question, Regarding Video playback, How bright is the screen? I have a HTC Desire and I love the bright screen either while watching movies or for any other thing, and I believe the tab is like that as well, however I went instore to Tesco to play with one and I have to say, the Video playback quality was disappointing for me, it was playing smooth no problem but the colour was bad and I tried about 10 different videos on it, Will this be due to the quality of the Video on the device etc..
Please advice as this is the reason I got rid of my Archos 70 IT.
Also does Vplayer work on the tab, I love the app and I use it on the desire, it plays Mkv mp4 etc. very nice app. I dont want to have to convert before watching...
I can reply to the first question.
The screen is very bright, i have it at 30 percent normaly, its kinda saturated like a amoled. Maybe the store unit you checked had battery saving turned on, it really messes up the colors, try checking that in settings next time you are there. Havent tryed thr archos but i would say the screen is is only seccond to the ipad when it comes to watching videos. For me it's even better and i got one in the house.

Thanks for the reply, Might take another trip down to the store to check it out again.....
I watch with brightness around 20% and it's much better than my desire on 50%
with my rip of predators the samurai scene is barely viewable. this is with power saving off, full brightness, and black density all the way up (turns blacks to a dark gray). i think it's a hard scene to playback anyways. on my archos 101 i can see everything, tattoos and all but it looks washed out and blacks become mid grays.
so the galaxy produces truer blacks, but it makes dark scenes harder to watch unless you're in a dark room. honestly i like the richer blacks.

Seeing as you seem to have both devices the archos and the Tab, whats your take on the video playback?

sorry so long to reply.
as far as format compatibility goes, the archos handles more formats. i've had a few videos that choked on the tab that had no problems on the archos.
i prefer the archos media player interface also. it seems if you can get the right info into your media files it'll actually list the series in order, no matter what the file names are.
the screens are a no contest though, the tab wins by far. better angles and better color.
Alright guys I am an Arc owner but not sure if I should have got a play I am very impressed with the arc. Im a fan of games and emulators I've got the n64oid which is great but touch screen controls take a lot away from the experience. Also for the screen the Arc's screen is vibrant I've heard that the Play's screen is dim is it dim when the brightness up full? I find the Arc to have a nice smooth interface how is the play for smoothness.
Does anyone have the two phones that could do a comparison?
All replies appreciated.
Cheers
Well i dont have an arc so i cannot comment. But i bought the xperia play for the emulators. Ive played emulators on touch screen phones and after 5 mins i was pulling my hair out lol. But with the fully mapable controls the emulators are great to play. I was unsure about the arc or the play too. But i decided to get the game controller over the better camera + hdmi output and i am not dissapointed with my choice
The screen is fine for me. Its on 100% brightness and looks great. Only problem is the light sensor but hopefully a future update will solve this. Been in the sun today and not had any problems with screen. I think the arcs screen will be better due to the bravia engine or w/e it is called.
The interface on the play is smooth as well not noticed any lag and i have got menus full of games and apps
there isnt a great deal between full and 0 brightness on the Play. only thing I will say is its a no go if used in bright areas out doors. 1/2 the time I can only just make it out if full sun light.
It's not the best but def not the worse display I've had on a handset.
Generally I have no problem with the screen brightness at all.
Normal phone usage and gaming provide a visually pleasing experience.
However, there are two minor gripes that I do have.
1. The brightness of the screen seems ok in sunlight, but the colours can look a little messed up.
2. The screen does look a little dark when viewing movies, and even though I use mvideo player & set the brightness to maximum it still looks dimmer than any other time.
OK Thanks for you reply's do you think when the reviewers commented on the dim screen this was without the screen at its maximum brightness and how is the default brightness setting, also how does it fell in the hand is on chunky? My speakers on my Arc aren't the best especially compared to my previous Nokia 5800 which had much better sound hows the play heard good and bad? What about the browser does it lag and does the device take adequate photos and videos? I know I've went off topic with my thread but saves me from making more threads.
The play is actually supposed to have the best speakers there are, I can't compare it well but the sound is suprisingly good for a phone (and I'm one of those guys that spends hundreds of dollars on audio).
other than the auto-brightness issue, the screen is fine. and you will love the emulators with the buttons, I am playing FPSE everyday^^ (MGS, FF[VII,VIII..],GT, resident evil 1,2,3)

i'll chime in here and say that i have owned nearly 10 android devices last year alone, as well as going though various nokia phones and i can say that the play definitely has the best speakers of any phone i have ever owned, and thats ALOT of phones
in case your wondering why i have gone though so many phones, its because i was looking for the best phone for emulators, usually a phone with a slide out qwerty keyboard, none were good enough untill the play showed up
Hello fellow G pad owners!
As much as I absolutely love my LG G Pad (black model). I think that LG really dropped the ball on the display brightness levels on the screen. For gaming, internet browsing, everything looks fine, but try and watch a movie with the display below 60% and it's really hard to see anything during the darker scenes in a movie. Well, I wanted to start this thread for people to share their settings/tips to help others who want a better better display on their devices. For me, I have been using an app called Screen Adjuster, which does not require root. While it does not brighten the screen as much as I would like, it does "lighten" up the contrast a bit for me which helps during those dark scenes when viewing movies. My settings using the app are:
App brightness: 100%
Contrast: -71%
System brightness at 65%
With this setting, my display looks much "brighter" and my battery life is still great. I can get through an entire day of gaming, web surfing and video streaming without having to charge my device.
Please post your comments, questions and all suggestions on your display settings recommendations here to help others.
Thanks
Yep, this is why I'm going to be looking hard at the HP slate 8 when it comes out. I really wish the dog hadn't knocked the note 8 out of my lap - I could continue using it happily for many months more, aside from the damaged screen.
The gpad is too dim for me to use, even with making screen adjustments as best I could, since I use my devices outdoors as well as indoors.

I saw you mention this over at Androidcentral.com. Bad dog, bad dog!! lol
I don't know man, my screen is fine now regardless of whether I'm using it indoors or outdoors now. Even without my settings listed, I never had a problem playing games or surfing the internet, it was only when watching dark-scene movies where it became an issue.
If you really look at it, this tablet has much more pros than cons about it. I don't remember the last Android tablet that I owned that had such an amazing resolution, solid build quality, great battery life and works great out of the box with no reboots/glitches to speak of! I mean, really, I had to double check to make sure that I was using an android tablet and not an Ipad! lol
This tablet works really smoothly, without a hitch. And being able to hold it with one hand while reading on that beautiful, high res screen is awesome!
The gamma is a bit on the low side -- around 2.0.
On many (most?) tablets the "brightness" is really the backlight control rather than a true brightness control (adjusting black level). The two controls should be independent for optimum results.
At the moment, using that appi have it set to:
Blue +6
Contrast -55
System brightness:35-45% night-day

For me with your settings it is far too washed out and lacking detail make it harder to read.
I set mine by using my retina ipad as a comparison. Adding the blue makes the white more natural and the colours match more. E.g. the Facebook app blue now matches.

You are right about my settings making things appear a little more washed out. I need to find the perfect balance for casual reading and movie watching on this thing. I do prefer a brighter screen than a duller looking one though, so I have to keep tinkering around with the settings.
Just so you know, the video player app has its own independent brightness setting. when you hit the menu button you should see an option for brightness.

Filter Your Screen App
I posted this in the Help and Troubleshooting forum on Saturday. Perhaps it needs to be here, too.
The "Filter Your Screen - Free" app has dramatically improved video playback using the LG Video viewer, BS Player, and MX Player. The settings that work for me are: Alpha 30; Red 200; Green 200 and Blue 220. I'm sure there are many variations, but I tried to keep it simple.
When not viewing a video, I turn the Filter off and it seems to help extend battery life.
One question: Does anyone have any experience with this app? If so, does it damage a display over time?
Thanks.
I'm thinking of getting one of these to go with my G2 which I love. However I will definitely be using it outside a lot and I've read mixed reviews on that. Some say it's unusable outside, while others say it's fine. Could some people here who own one please share their views on outdoor usage?

As we are all aware bright sunlight kills mobile phone screens and tablets have just the same issue .
But due to the LG 8.3 brightness issues as this review
At 273 lux, the G Pad's screen is far dimmer than the tablet category average of 359 lux and well off the iPad mini's mark of 432 lux. The Galaxy Tab 3 8-inch offered a higher rating of 477 lux, while the Kindle Fire HDX topped out at 480 lux.
Then I think the LG 8.3 is not for you sorry as its great little tablet

:good: great tip
Im using the Screen Adjuster app but for some reason it changes colours/contrast for everything besides the navigation bar (looks more noticeable when contrast is changed).
Im using Madhi Rom, so not sure if it's the rom or the app. Anyone else have this problem?

For Me, it's time to Re-Think the equation.
Hello! I'm New Here So the situation is, I have a Note 4 that is almost brand new (Snapdragon) and I love it so much. My only issue with my Note 4 is when I watch videos either if it's offline or online, The video seems to not be as sharp as my Note 3 and also isn't as colorful as my Note 3 as well. I'm talking about 1080p videos and I also notice facebook thumbnails look faded as well; I looked everyone for help but no answer as if a problem like this doesn't exist but the closest thing I found was the nexus players updating to marshmallow with a RGB Limit bug which looked the same to what I'm experiencing. I know this isn't a hardware problem and I don't have anything wrong with the phone (Not even rooted) I'm on 6.0 and I really want to get this fix to watch media without the noticeable problem. I'd really appreciate anyone help to take their time out to figure this problem out, thank you.
If further information is needed, I will try my best to provide.

Are you using a screen protector? Some screen protector's can act as a filler to make the display on mobile device's look worst than anything else.
Here's my review after owning for 10 days. I am not an Oppo ambassador so therefore these thoughts are not biased in any way. I could have gotten a Samsung S22 Ultra for around the same monthly price (maybe it was £5 more) but the lack of charger in the box put me off. The Oppo gift incentive also swung me over.
I'm sure everyone knows about the features and specs of the phone so far so I won't bother with those.
What I like:
- The build quality and design are exceptional, without a case the phone feels great in the hand, although it's very slippery if you have cold hands and there is no clammyness from your fingers to provide grip. The ceramic feels better than glass and I haven't seen any scratches yet. It also feels very slim so one handed use is possible.
- The screen is very good, even in 1080p it's hard to see the pixels compared to other 1080p phones.
- Main camera and ultrawide very good, in the right lighting conditions they provide excellent shots with plenty of detail.
- Fast and very few stutters in the OS. I haven't encountered any bugs yet.
- Charging is insanely quick and phone doesn't really get hot when charging.
- XPAN is cool and interesting.
- Vibration motor is much better than previous phones I've used. On the strongest setting I won't be missing any calls.
- Battery life is reasonable in terms of SOT. I consistently get 6-7 hours under heavy use.
- Wireless Android Auto works flawlessly.
What I don't like:
Camera
- You cannot zoom or switch between cameras when shooting 4k60 video.
- Some shots on the main and ultrawide cameras can be over exposed, it sometimes takes a few shots in the same light to get a good one. Hopefully they can fix this in a future update.
- Some indoor daytime shots of moving subjects are always blurry.
- Selfies are often, in my experience, over exposed, and not on par with what I've seen from P40 Pro.
- Videos taken in 1080p do not send well over Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms. It could be to do with the compression used in this format, but once uploaded to these sites, the videos are very choppy, colours are crushed, and the videos are in general pretty unusable. Only videos sent in 4K look ok. This was an issue with the Find X3 Pro, and I am not sure why Oppo have not addressed this yet.
- There's no getting around the fact that this phone lacks any reasonable camera zoom at all. 2X is not zoom in my opinion.
- Forget nighttime shots of moving subjects, night photo takes 2s to process (although quicker than other phones).
- I feel like the MarisiliconX thing is mostly a marketing gimmick.
Screen
- The AlwaysOnDisplay is very dim and there's no way to change it. Also the coloured icons are very hard to distinguish at a glance. If the display is dim, then greyscale icons would be easier to see.
- 120Hz doesn't seem to be active in a lot of apps, so I had to manually force it using an app from youtube video.
Software/OS
- Cannot increase grid size in ColorOS launcher any more than 5 x 6. Please give option for up to 9 x 6 like Nova? Otherwise launcher is perfect!
- There is no desktop mode when plugged into a usb-c monitor like Samsung Dex or Huawei EMUI Desktop. You can indeed enable desktop mode in developer settings but it's not the same experience.
- When using a 3rd party launcher (I always use Nova), there are some bugs when going back to home screen, e.g. the recent apps screen flashes up for a split second when it shouldn't. Because of this I forced myself to get used to ColourOS launcher.
- There is no button to turn off/on 5G in the notifications quick settings menu.
- "Hey google" only works in Android Auto & Google Maps if you have the global "Hey Google" listening setting enabled. Not sure if this is an android 12 bug or just Oppo bug.
- Oppo PC Connect is only available on PC, not Mac or Linux.
Battery/Charging
- Standby battery life could be better. It drains about 5-7% overnight when my Huawei P40 Pro only drained 2%. If I barely use the phone during the day (only check/reply to messages etc and use around 1.5h SOT), then the battery is still below 40% when I go to bed. My P40 Pro barely drained when not used heavily. Of course Huawei do much more aggressive battery/memory management and if I enabled optimisation for all apps in the Oppo's settings then maybe I could get similar but I don't want to mess with notifications.
- Wireless charging with a non-oppo wireless charger seems very slow. I have a 5W charger in my Lexus and when charging using it, the phone still loses battery when using wireless android auto.
All in all, I actually preferred using my old Huawei P40 Pro as the camera was superior in most situations as well as better standby battery but the hacked google services installed just put me off. Android auto was very temperamental, hence I can't stick with it.
Interesting review.
I agree. The Marisilicon thing is a slight gimmick. Its not as good as Google Pixel image processors. My Pixel 3 still takes better images.
Build quality is good but heavyish for me. I had an OP8 and I'm finding the camera bump a little odd even after 2 weeks.
I hate that I'm being forced to power down using power button and volume up. Had to download a 3rd party app to make this process more convenient. Also download a lockdown app which is missing from here.
Also have a weird YouTube Bluetooth issue. When I'm listening to YouTube in the car and someone calls, the YouTube still plays in the background through the speakers as well as the conversation!?
Sometimes the apps get stuck and you need to kill the app. The comments section on the YouTube app also sticks and you need to press home and return to the YouTube app. Minor bugs which I expect and hope Oppo fix through software updates.
I too was swung by the gift pack. I was originally planning to get the OP10 Pro but EE do not offer this handset and I get 30pc friends and family so this was a no brainer.
Happy with the phone. At over a thousand quid should be perfect.

I like your thinking, I am also on EE with the 30pc f&f discount :'D I went for the smart plan so I can hand the phone back with no upgrade charge after 12 months if something better comes along.
I used to work for them years ago and had the discount ever since. It makes the RRP of the phone over 24 months much less (if I factor-in the price i'd pay for sim only anyway).
For your youtube issue, have you tried giving the youtube app permission to Phone? I've had some other apps ask me to set Phone permissions (such as Tidal) in order to pause during a call. I guess YouTube might need that permission so that it can see that the Phone is in use?
It is a little heavy compared to other phones i've used. I have been checking Youtube nearly every day to see if anyone has done a drop test lol.
For me the power button thing isn't a big issue as I rarely power it off.
I agree though, at the price, the phone should be perfect. This is what is kind of putting me off compared to the Huawei I paid only £300 for in Grade A condition from CeX.
Thanks. I've just set the permission on YouTube as per your suggestion. I've never had to do that ever before so just another tedious quirk!
Won't say it too loudly but surprised the F&F is applied to the handset and not just the line rental but I'm not complaining.
Keep me posted to any other bugs/fixes. I'll do likewise

It is the line rental, I mean if you add up 24 months of line rental and subtract the price of a sim only (that you'd need to pay anyway, usually around £15pm) then that's your effective handset price.

I agree re the in-hand feel, I am a fan of ceramic and yes on paper it is not much smaller than other phones but does feel more manageable.

I'd agree wth this, they are tiny
Re the blurry photos, I still think it is better than a Samsung, maybe only the Pixel or iPhone is better in this regard?
I think I prefer my S22U overall especially the more reliable fingerprint sensor but prefer the size and in-hand feel of the Oppo.

I don't have any issues whatsoever with the fingerprint sensor, it seems faster than on my huawei - are you using a screen protector?
I contemplated returning to get S22U but today is the last day of my return window so I think I will just keep it. Samsung is slightly more expensive and I still need to buy seperate charger.
I can trade-in in 12 months anyway and get something else on my contract so maybe Oppo will have released a Samsung beating phone by then.
There is nothing wrong with the FPS, just think the S22U is better. I have had the Pixel 6 and it is way better than that. I just think the ultrasonic sensor is more reliable, less prone to issues if your hands are wet etc

Ah I see, having had both Oppo and S22U (exynos?), is samsung better in every department?

I think the Oppo camera is better indoors but that is anecdotal, actually other than zoom reach the Oppo camera is slightly better overall I think (for stills) I also think the Oppo battery is better at least standby wise. Other than your personal preference re size and design I think the S22U is better for most other things
