updating first time since 2017 - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

Hoping for some direction here...I have a2017u, still running a bootloader unlocked, rooted, build number a2017uv1.1.0B19 from early 2017. I figure it's time to update. What steps do I need to take to update to one of the more recent rom builds? I'm assuming it's not just a simple matter of flashing a recent ROM. It's been over 2 years, and I'd like to not brick my phone. Thanks!

Updating isn't too difficult if you have some instructions.
Firstly, were you looking to update to Oreo or Pie?

probably to SL!M7 DF!NR, which I believe is oreo. I'd just follow the instructions in the thread, but I vaguely recall reading (at some point in the last year or so) that if you are making that big a jump, there's a few extra steps to prevent bricking. Maybe I'm misremembering, or maybe the posts I'd read were mistaken...just wanted to make sure. Thanks.

Can the OTA update be rooted?

I'm just gonna stick with rooting. Will rooting hold up against the update or will I have to nandroid unlock and flash a stock rooted rom?
This has been asked several times. Please visit the Android development section and you will see. A little searching doesn't hurt.

Well there is so much information being thrown around at the moment, that I haven't been able to find a stock rooted 1.47.xx rom, either, and all I do is search.
OP: If you find it, let me know and I will do the same.
thats because one doesnt exist.
Use a patched version of the OTA or a ROM with it baked in and you keep root. Flash non-patched OTA and you loose root. eazy-peazy.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712695
the OTA will break your root.
however, if you've already done that, you can reroot since the most recent OTA has been rooted.
Short answer is yes.
Long answer will involve you going to a different sub forum for evo and looking it up.

Ha! Thanks.....believe it or not, that actually explains a lot. I think I'll wait for a stock rooted rom to be available.

Yea, I saw that earlier, but this is for people who upgraded via the OTA 1.47.xx and then lost root. For this to work for me, I'd have to willingly upgrade to the OTA, and then run through these steps. I don't think I want to do that.
I'm in the process of unlocking NAND now since I'm going to need to have that done in order to proceed with anything related to 1.47.xx, so once I get this done, I'll worry about finding something that works.
I am pretty sure this is what you are looking for... It is a Rooted rom, based off the 1.47 update.

or this one...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915
which one of those work?
I was actually running the first of the 2 links myself, since I was having major problems with my EVO, and could only use limited ROMs. It was very reliable, but I wanted the flexibility to run other ROMs. I have not run the one posted in the 2nd link, but from some of the replies, it works well also. If you are already rooted, and are comfortable flashing ROMs, I would recommend the first, since it loads just like any other ROM. It all depends on how much work you want to do.

Do unrooted phones have better performance? Hear me out!

I'm running Fresh 0.5.3. If I understand correctly, it is working off of the version of code that does not include the latest OTA update.
So that means that my OS is kind of out of date, right? And since none of the rooted ROMs really have access to the latest OTA, then they are kind of out of date, right?
This is not meant to be a troll thread. Honest question from a n00b.
Not all of us are running Fresh.
My phone is rooted, and up to date.

The rooted latest OTA rom, i would give u the link but it's on the wiki which is down
I don't understand, I guess. I know that you can root your phone and install a custom ROM. You can root it whether or not your phone initially had the OTA applied or not. Once it is rooted, your have a finite number of choices. There is Fresh, DamageControl, whatever. But I thought that none of these had the OTA applied to their code? Since HTC hasn't released it. Am I wrong?
If so, could you please, even though I know it's annoying of me to ask, point me in the direction of the ROM that you are using?
Thanks.

I use the whitslack stock rom. Only real diff between mine and Sprint, is I have custom recovery & SU.
If you're running Fresh now just wait a little bit. Version 4 is about to be released according to Filpz' tweets.
most are based on the latest OTA, im runing OMJ 1.6
Would version 4 be going one step back since fresh is on version .53 I thought version 4 got skipped

[Q] Root for US OTA 2.0

So I'm going to go out on a limb and say that there is no solution to root a TP that's already applied the 2.0 update?
I've tried the root methods already obtainable on here and they don't work. I'm guessing (more hoping) that someone is working on finding a solution.
Makes me sad. A co-worker updated it for me because "it said it needed to update it so I did it for you"... *sigh*
OTA2 removed the exploit unless you were already rooted and used Voodoo Rootkeeper to maintain root during the update. I haven't heard the outcome with regards to 2.5. I don't want to risk root so won't be updating unless it's safe.
2.5 is out ? which your version of tablet ?
16gb us. Was delivered last week.
Yeah, I didn't have it rooted before so yeah.
Either people like us find a way to downgrade or wait until a new exploit is found. The former seems easier but my knowledge of these things isn't very high...
Yeah, I'm not sure how to either. I'm good at following directions but when a "friend" upgrades your device for you...
As for downgrading, I don't think that'll be an option until someone finds a Lenovo rom flash utility.

2. 5 was not available to US last week. How did you get it? Supposedly it's still going through certification. 0086_US is 2.0. What version are you?
Oh hell.... I've been reading too many posts on the Lenovo forums. My apologies, I am running OTA 2.0 NOT 2.5. I will correct my first post and title.
I'm running ThinkPadTablet_A310_02_0039_0086_US.
Okay. Thanks. No worries, but was scratching my head, looking puzzled.
Haha! I can understand. I have that look a lot sadly. I appreciate you telling me as I had no clue as to what exactly I was saying.
Now, if anyone knows someone on the inside at Lenovo that could get the flash utility...
LOL If only.
And now we wait. Did NOT expect CM9 to come out so fast and be working so didn't care much for root otherwise. Oh well, that was my fault and I knew I'd lose root for the time being. Now I wait patiently, since the primary work of the developers now is making CM9 to work properly so w/e.
Why isn't there a way to downgrade the rom to 075? The tab has a recovery boot. If it could be downgraded, it could then be rooted , then updated.
No way to downgrade, unless you know something the rest of us are unaware of. There's a bunch of folks that either can't root at all, or took OTA2 before getting root/without preserving root. We've been told that there's nothing to be done for the time being.
I don't know how to do it, but I know that's how other tabs got around the problem. I only say it in case someone does.
AFAIK, the problem is the recovery's signature check.. if it recognizes that the update.zip to flash is older than the build actually installed, it won't install the new ROM.
Thanks. Noob enough that I couldn't explain it, just knew it doesn't work.

I wonder what it takes to defeat the check? There must be an update script that performs that check. Editing elements of the update script has been the key to other "can't be done" situations.

I'm going to keep putting forth suggestions instead of claiming something can't be done. Afterall, the point of this entire forum is to work togther to overcome obstacles.
While I don't know a lot about these things, if it could be done, it would have been. This forum is overflowing with posts from owners of all kinds devices asking how to downgrade their respective device so they can take root. It's not an uncommon request, and one that I have researched for another device, only to find the same answer. Hey if you find out how to do it, you'll make a fortune.
Two other tablets, the Flyer and the View downgrade to gingerbread, then unlock bootloader, then root, then update to honeycomb, then custom roms are applied. They got the idea from another tab, the Iconia, who got it from the Transformer . . .
I'm just trying to push good and bad ideas to someone with the skills. It's about not taking 'no' as an answer.
Here's the thread for Flyer/View:

[Q] Moto Newb - XT907 w/ 98.18.94.XT907 Where to begin?

I have had my phone for about a year. I have been playing with the idea of rooting and running custom roms. I have done so with an Acer A500, but as its not dependent on 2 year contract, I have never had reservations after the warranty was up. Now I am really wanting to see benefits of custom roms on my Razr M, but I am not sure where to begin rooting and what ROMS are best/stable (subjective I know). Can someone point me in the direction I need to go as I am having a hard time figuring out what process to use with the latest OTA update having been applied and never rooted before. Is there one better method to unlock over another? I am trying to catch up with lots of amazing work reading through whats been done, but I feel a bit out of my zone. Thank you in advance.

Unfortunately, you can't unlock or root at the moment. A root exploit might be found, but you probably won't ever be able to unlock...

I was afraid of that. It'll be my fault for not doing it sooner. Thanks for the response.

Root/Unlock then upgrade to Marshmallow

I'm on KitKat (4.4.2) stock. KOT49H.G900VVRU1ANCG is the build according to about phone.
My phone is rooted and that's it. I never upgraded because of fear of slow-downs and lack of root, but it's about time.
Is it possible to unlock the bootloader and then upgrade to marshmallow and get root? I keep seeing people saying there's a Lollipop root method but no Marshmallow method. But if the bootloader is unlocked doesn't that make it possible to root Marshmallow too? I checked and I have the 15XXXXX CID.
So any ideas how to best go about this?
I just want the simplest experience. No crazy ROMs or bug, nothing I have to keep updating. Just a smoother running phone than I have on my dated KitKat.

Thanks for the reply, but as you can see I've looked at the threads (even mentioned my CID). My concern is that, as I mentioned, "I keep seeing people saying there's a Lollipop root method but no Marshmallow method."
Since that part isn't clear to me, I hoped someone would clear it up.

Go to the unlock thread that's located in the Android Development section. There's a method for unlocking to get to MM.....if you read a little bit deeper in the threads that ideveraux had mentioned if you have the 11 CID you cannot be rooted on MM because it uses a different kernel. That said, users with the 15 CID can be rooted on MM AFTER they've unlocked their Bootloader. Again, go to the unlock thread and read up
