Pixel 2 XL Discontinued, and Not an April Fools Joke Either - Google Pixel 2 XL Guides, News, & Discussion

Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL
While Google has been selling the Pixel 3 and 3XL for about six months now, the Pixel 2 and 2 XL are still very good phones, especially at discounted prices. But if you want one, you’ll have to act fast. Google has stopped selling the Pixel 2 and 2XL through its online store, which means whatever remaining stock at store like Best Buy and B&H Photo are sure to be extremely limited.

While not a major surprise in and of itself, this does mean the only new Pixel 2 XL devices remaining are the Verizon devices. There is a possibility of Amazon still having some unlocked devices, but for the most part anyone coming to this forum from this point onward is most likely to have a Verizon model.

I think they are introducing mid-range devices that's why they are discontinuing the Pixel 2 n 2xl line up as the prices of these phones will be similar to the new midranges they will be releasing.

The mid-range Pixels aren't the reason for this. Google normally discontinues sales of their older devices some six months after the release of a newer one.

Oh okay. That might be the normal trend then. I thought its more of a business strategy to sell the mid-range. so nothing too drastic on Googles part.

This has been the way they always do this so I doubt the new devices have anything to do with that

Still can get NIB Pixel 2 on Swappa.

Is the Moto X selling well?

So, we all know the future of Motorola depends (maybe) on the success of the Moto X.
Do you guys have any piece of information, any personal experience in a store or anything to share related to the success or unsuccess of the phone?
I really hope it sells well.

Guy at the store today when I was returning mine said they're selling some, not a ton, and not "almost none."
Said most of the ones they've sold have been customized. So people seem to like that.

Cool!
Custom phones shipping time was pushed back from 4 to 6-8 days "due to high demand" so they must be selling well, right?
The rep at my normal store said they were selling quite a few. I was in twice before buying the card and he was really knowledgeable about the phone so it was nice to see someone actually helping people understand the value.
The 6 day thing Is hogwash. When I placed my order this past Sunday they estimated 9 days and delivery around Sept 4th. I got it 3 days later (yesyerday) I didn't even get the email saying it shipped until it was on the truck for delivery already.

Nope, it didn't. I kept checking the whole day. I got the email at about 4am on wed with tracking. The order status still wasn't updated. When I tracked it when I woke up it was out for delivery

Im willing to bet there aren't much sale going on with the iPhone 5S about to come out.
I love android and all, but a lot of people prefer iPhones.
That and to a lesser degree, Nexus 5 + Note 3
Depends on what well means. Probably a little better than most Motorola's given the marketing budget & no carrier exclusivity but it's nowhere close to an iPhone or SGS.

The rep told me last friday (there was no one in the store) that it had been like that all month, empty.
AT&T exclusivity on custom requests coupled with not releasing it at the same time on all carriers is a fail for Motorola.

its that iPhone 5S. better have android on it
And in regards to motorola failing, it is IMPOSSIBLE to synchronize same day release for all carriers unless youre apple, even then, its really hard because of Verizon. If they are in the course of a month, like the S4, thats pretty successful. The HTC One, on the other hand, thats a fail.
But exclusivity wise with the motomaker, yea, thats a fail. IDK how much AT&T offered to pay upfront, but i dont think its worth it.

iPhones have there place, just not with me anymore. I got so tired of jailbreaking and waiting months for a new jailbreak to appear after a updated version of IOS came out. All I wanted was the ability to run iblacklist. Anyway, I really want a Moto X but somehow thinking the LG G2 might morph into a N5 really has me excited. Also I'm very curious what the Note 3 and new wearable accessories might be just around the corner. Moto X, Note 3, Nexus 5, they will all be winners. Tough decisions ahead on what to get..

Same day availability isn't even a selling point of a phone & they probably made more money on the customization exclusivity period than the few random people that consider that a make or break on a purchase.

Tell that to Apple and Samsung. Instead of getting more people with Moto X 's in their hands, they will most definitely lose market share to the G2, the 2013 Nexus and the Sony Honami. Samsung was a garbage cellphone maker until they followed the Apple model, and I won't even buy a Samsung phone, but Moto would do well to follow their lead if they want to sell more than 5 million phones world wide.

Uh, Sgs4 launched in late April on 327 networks in 155 countries. It sold 20 million in 2 months. Moto is calling this a flagship, that's how you launch a flagship.

I also thought moto put like 2 million into advertising and I see more Verizon new DROID than the X. I been dying for this phone but because of specs and not getting updates like a nexus I'm sticking to the gs4.

Like the HTC one? That's Verizon's fault. They'd rather push their trash on people. Sgs4 sold more phones than any phone in history, you and I have very different meanings of the word failure.

Out of anger or excitement? For me it'd be out of anger Canadian dollar still sucks so the chances of this device getting into my hands are definitely not XL
I've been waiting for Pixel XL for soooo long, and I just hope pricing is not super high. I'm planning to get the 64 gig version...
Design seems to be a disappointment. Huge bezel and 5.5" screen? If the price is high I'm getting the frost 6P, because white XL looks disgusting. Almost like a cheap Chinese copy of iPhone 6, especially the front side. I feel like I've been waiting for nothing, could have gotten 6P months ago.

I remember the first 6P renders looking horrid, but it turned out to be nice and slick (but still not the biggest fan of the glass camera back). I'm sure once the official pictures come out, everyone will be drooling over it.

I wish I had that phone... I sold myö iPhone 6 Plus for Pixel XL and currently I'm using S6 Edge, although it's not my phone and I'm supposed to give it back to my friend once I get Pixel XL/6P. I will have to buy a phone eventually and I want Pixel XL so bad, but I find 6P awesome provided that Pixel XL render is not so good. But they are only renders, so I just have to wait patiently.

Have a Note 7 which is as we all know best in class for camera, water resistance but despite being a PhoneAholic can't decide whether or not to go for Pixel XL..had every Nexus device and sometimes miss extra features that Samsung provide...but then HATE their slow firmware update schedule....decisions decisions !

They will always lack some features. But I think Google is giving up on stock firmware, so I'm guessing Pixel phones will be different in terms of features you mentioned compared to Nexus phones. Still those features won't be heart rate sensor or something.
By the way, if we buy devices on Canadian Google Store, do we also get 1 year hardware warranty like the US customers?
It is my understanding the Pixel XL is stock firmware, quick updates as we got with the Nexus Devices.
My theory one of the reason why Google rebranded Nexus to Pixel because recycling names was getting confusing.
Nexus 6, 6p, ... 6 (2016) or 6xl or something .... let us just call the next devices Pixel.
If it is like most years the Pixel XL will not release in Canada at the same time as the Americans get it but when it is released in Canada I will likely pick one up.
I'm hoping the XL is a badass phone and comes to Wind. My S6 is good but dev support and updates have me regretting buying it. If not I guess it's a 6p, op3 or htc 10 maybe.

It looks odd with the back half glass and half metal....like its patched up lol. At least the white one looks odd anyway.
Would have looked much better all of one material instead of half and half.
I still think it was a stupid idea to shrink the screen and lose the stereo speakers. Not a strong selling feature for me at any rate.

Well 1179$ + taxes for the Canadian model Pixel XL 128gb. This is crazy.
pretty disappointed to see such a ridiculous price point on the XL. Over $1000 for 32GB's and no device protection. Not sure what Google is trying to do here but I'm definitely not buying it at that price. No phone is worth $1000.
Very expensive, the XL came to $1300 with tax for the 128GB model with no insurance.
Canadian prices (before taxes):
Pixel 32GB: 900$
Pixel 128GB: 1030$
Pixel XL 32GB: 1050$
Pixel XL 128GB: 1180$

Thats so funny...more than a note 7 and lacking so many features not the least of which would be sd card support and waterproofing. They even ditched some of the 7P features dont even offer 256gb of storage but charging that kind of money.

What will happen when pixel 2 comes out?

With the nexus devices Google always seemed to firesale leftover stock from the previous model. Does anyone think that trend will continue with the original pixel once the pixel 2 is released?

It already started. Over the last 2-3 weeks I've been seeing them sell for around $350-$450 which is a rather hefty discount for the pixel devices....Now if you're talking about that kind of discount from the Play Store itself...I'm sure it'll happen around the end of this month IF the Pixel 2 event actually takes place Oct 4th as expected.

I'm more so thinking of the nexus 6 firesale after the 5x and 6p where amazon had them on black Friday for 200 dollars, and that was also a phone that had retailed at 650.

Pixel 2 is better in every way especially with their proven customer service
I would even rate google at par with Apple or even higher in terms of service
With all the software / hardware problems with essential phone and their customer service
I dont see myself buying their phone anymore especially at $700

This is true, the pixel will have an overall more polished software experience, better camera and CS....however I can't bring myself to buy one because this PH-1's design and feeling in hand outweighs everything for me. I told myself back in the iPhone 4 and 5 days that if someone ever stuffed an Android operating system with the iphone's candy bar design language, I would buy it instantly. Essential did that. And I became happy.
Tho if the pixel 2 went small bezels, I would have jumped on that
Edit: I realized op said XL lol yeah form factor alone kicks the XL out of my list.
I'm definitely waiting to see the finished product of the XL 2 before choosing. It's between the essential and the xl 2 though. The essential is just secksay, but I'm worried about it having been buggy, as well as how long big Android updates (like Oreo) will take. I guess we'll see next week!
I'm either crazy or I swear the leaks for the PXL essentially made it out to be LG V30 more or less (no DAC probably)... and why wouldn't you compare the Essential phone to the Pixel 2 instead XL since they're different form factors. Personally, I love the Essential form factor and plan on keeping it, making it my main phone (if and when I get a fully working one anyways lol).
Well if you're a Sprint customer I think the Essential is a good option. We don't have many phones that we can get from our carrier that are development friendly. In fact, the only 2017 flagship you can get from Sprint at the moment that has an unlockable bootloader is the HTC U11. Plus Sprint being CDMA you can't bring in devices like the OnePlus or other Chinese phones or the international unlock able versions of phones. So pretty much we're left with the google phones which ARE compatible with Sprint, but pretty pricey. Buying from your carrier there are usually perks like 50% off or loyalty credits, interest-free financing, etc. Now that we have the Essential phone purchasable through Sprint we have a bootloader unlockable STOCK android nexus-like device with high-end specs.
Overall though I'm sure the Pixel 2 will be a better phone than the Essential, but the essential is close enough IMO and the fact that it will likely be cheaper than a 128gb Pixel, especially when you factor in carrier incentives makes me pick it over the google phone.

Only 3 Years of Updates?

According to the Gizmodo Article dated the 11th of this month ( https://gizmodo.com/google-appears-to-be-killing-off-the-pixel-and-pixel-xl-1825194921 ), all updates for our Pixel XL phones will end on October 2019.
Like the article, this seems a bit premature to me. I'm loving my Pixel XL, and can currently see no reason to even think about getting rid of it. Is this unreasonable? Unfortunately, I'm not made of money and don't plan to just upgrade my phone every 2 years if I'm happy with the one that I have.
What do you all think? Does anyone else have anymore insight to this?

Google Provides 2 years for OS and 1 year additional for Security patches but since we have treble we might get lucky and get a few extra updates
Well three years of OS update they should provide really. Given the price was on launch of OG Pixels, for unlocked models that is.

Yep shame price doesn't effect quality of the updates... This device for sure deserves 3 years+ Not sure why for the Pixel 2 they gave 3 years OS but not us....
A shame that Pixel 2 now has 3 years of full updates and OG Pixel still only gets 2 years...
