Very poor Camera performance on my G6

Helo guys em new to this community...yeasterday i got my LG G6 ( India) ever since i took it out of the box everything was fine except the camera...The pictures seems soo grainy & full of noise...Even in the indoor lighting conditions...I was in the impression that LG g6 camera is one of the best.But my front cam tooks pictures even worst than a VGA camera phone . I havnt got any update since yesterday my software details are as follow: Android version 7.0....Build Num NRD90U....Software version V10K-IND-XX
Please suggest a fix if anybody knows...

Try outdoor first to evaluate the camera quality with good lighting.
Indoor is subjective. Were you using a flash? What types of light, florescent, incandescent or LED?

Were you trying with wide Angle? Because, wide angle sometimes get grainy..

Check camera settings they are set for lower resolutions from factory

I feel the same
got mine last week and i cannot make a decent shot with auto, even my old Iphone6 is more capable of making a good shot.
Indoors is terrible, like a oil painting and most of the time not sharp.
I dont get it, did i got a Lemon? I will try some time but if this is not getting better i will send it back. Besides that i like the phone, feels good but i will not have a phone where the camera sucks / the automode sucks. Which is the same for me, because i just want to snap pics and not work on dials (for this i have my dslr) . And coming from a Sony z3c, which also was a fine phone except the camera, the iphone is just meant as a substitute, i dont see the point in keeping that thing.

Low light photos on the G6 are poor. Nothing wrong with your phone, its just the sensor that was used. Gcam doesn't really help, IMHO. Don't try to zoom in too much and you won't notice the noise in the photo too much.

I also notice that the G6 camera is not that thing there, but I noticed that when taking a photo with the phone as still as possible they are better. My problem is the videos that are shaking a lot, especially at night.

Well this is something I haven't seen on smartphone photos yet. This is low light photo and I tried to keep phone as steady as possible. So there is quite nice details on the background, but very, very heavy processing in the area that contain movement. Is it the sensor or camera app itself that does this? It is like only certain areas of the photo are processed more than the rest.

I have almost same problem, with the main/frontal camera on LG G6 (LS 993) Sprint.
All execpt the camera working good.
I'm looking on my photo and i want to cry.
First of all i have tried to use my standard camera, then i used google cam and other soft - no result.

You are encountering the limits of a cellphone camera. Very low light, combined with a small sensor, high ISO and low shutter speed=crappy photo. You can't defeat the laws of optics. In the lighting conditions of the photo in the snow, you would have to have a good SLR camera to capture action shots with any clarity.

Indeed.
Also be aware that of the 3 G6 cameras, only the rear standard one is even remotely capable of acceptable image quality in low light.
The ultra-wide is slow (f/2.4), unstabilized, and on some devices downright broken.
Front cam is simply not very good.

I know the limits of smartphone camera. But the interesting thing in my sample photo is that there is jpeg processing in only PARTS of the image. There is quite good amount of details in those parts which did not have any movement (by the object and by the device).

Yes I see what you mean. The processing artifacts seem to be concentrated on the edges of the figure. My guess is that the software is detecting the blurry edges and attempting to "sharpen", unsuccessfully.

About the front camera "issues":
if your selfies look like this:
- that's normal. my camera does the same thing (in all camera apps), I really have to edit the sh*t out of them in Photoshop to get acceptable results
I saw someone calling it an aquamarell effect and yup, that's exactly it
Really don't know what the hell is the issue with that sensor, I didn't think that 5mp pics would ever look that blurry lol

I was wondering about the camera quality right when I read that the sensor's pixel size is merely 1.12 µm, which is actually the lowest I ever saw in a mid-range to high-end phone. The standard is 1.4 µm, my 2 years old Nexus 5X even has 1.55 µm, which easily compensates for the smaller aperture of f/2.0 compared to f/1.8 in the L6.
The bigger the pixels on the sensor, the more light information (e.g. brightness, colors) they can capture. That's also the reason why it's better to have less pixels in total (e.g. 12 MP instead of 16 MP), giving each single pixel more space to capture light, especially on such small sensors.
So the low-light performance of this camera comes as no suprise to me.
This actually kept my from buying the L6, which I otherwise liked when I held it in my hands.

From my experience the pictures are ok/good, but the video done indoor is really poor, I have a strange feeling, that my old G2 made better videos....

about your low light photo. It is possible that the smudged area around the moving object is because the phone camera is taking more than one image similar to the hdr process so it can eliminate the noise, it is possible that this is the hdr itself if it is turned on. This is because the area around the moving object as well as the object itself has less info recorded for the same pixels from the image (as it was shot in one image not few like usually the hdr or low light noise reduction images are done for good quality) and thats why is not looking that sharp.
Sorry my english is not native and i am not sure if i explained it good enough. For reference check how HDR and/or image stacking noice reduction work.

I compare samsung note 4 photo vs lg g6 and I can say.... note 4 win in all ways in photo quality. Ofc dont have ultra wide buuut? Collor , sharpness, noise ? Note 4 win. I own lg g6+ h870dsu

it looks to me that there is a difference in colour when i shoot in 1x vs. 2x/3x/4x/5x (probably due to different f-stops of the cameras?)

I a having thr device since 1 week now and seeing the problems that should be addressed asap.
Photo quality is only good in verry low light.
Daylight ok.
Dusk is the lighting which it struggles.
I have compared this to a op6t and op6t is a lot better
.

Try using PRO mode first.
Also try other settings. Try night mode off as well. you really need to take the same photo with all these settings to compare.
Auto is not always the best (im a photographer and often have to go to PRO mode to NOT get a bad photo in challenging light scenarios)

This is one of the best photo comparison on YT. Thx a lot bro i hooe you weill make with P30 Pro vs S10+ and P30 Pro Vs Mate 20 Pro.
And very weird thing, P30 Pro is bad at x3 and 4x zoom and P20 Pro is much more better. Why? Will this be fixed in future updates?
I know the P20 Pro have optical zoom up to x3 zoom but P30 Pro have uo to 5x. :/

Bugs on v124 with p30 Pro vlog09:
- When in Pro mode, you have to tap for exposure before the Wide/1x/5x zoom on screen toggle appears.
- Wide in Pro mode has extremely aggressive noise reduction and over sharpening which makes the photos look rubbish. Compare to Wide in Photo mode which are less like a watercolour image. Wide in Photo mode is excellent.
- Photo mode doesn't let you change to Wide/1x/5x when the main camera resolution is 40mp instead of 10mp which is silly. It should let you change anytime. However, you can work around this by changing to Wide in Pro then back to Photo, and it will stay Wide. It will keep it at 20mp for wide too. This trick doesn't work for 5x zoom unfortunately.
Not bugs but observations:
The raw files for the 40mp main sensor have tremendous latitude and dynamic range. You can pull back highlights like nothing else. I'm used to shooting on full frame cameras (5d, 5dmk2, 6d) and m43 for context, and this has me impressed. There's not much noise, and the noise I see is quite pleasant, like a Samsung isocell sensor where it is a nice texture rather than distracting.
However the white balance is completely screwed on the 40mp raws. The balance is different from the centre to the edges so near impossible to get right in Lightroom. There's some weird green tint going on with shadows, and it's very difficult to get a warm yellow hue to an image (think: golden dusk sunlight reflecting off an old white painted villa) without it turning either sickly green or magenta.
And if you do get the white balance how you like it, too bad, the edges will now be green or magenta because of the aforementioned colour shift between centre and edges.
Note, the jpgs are fine, so Huawei are doing some serious processing to fix that up. Also saying that so you don't think my p30 Pro is bung, if that was true, then the jpgs would also be out of whack but they're spot on.
It'd be nice if Adobe figured out a calibration/process profile that fixed this up.
The raw files for the wide sensor have a huge amount of vignetting. Easy to fix however. The raw files have much richer greens in particular than the jpgs. Sharpness is very good. This sensor is a bit noisier than the 40mp one, but still really impressive. No white or colour balance issues.
The raw files for the 5x sensor barely need adjusting. There's some pincushion to tweak and a bit of contrast to add but that's it. Sharpness is impressive. Again white balance is fine.

The primary camera is used for up to 2x zoom, and the tele-camera for 5x and longer. For intermediate zoom factors, the P30 Pro combines image data from both cameras.

That is good and bad thing. So if I want to make portrait mode x3 or x4 the photo will be bad quality

Can we see night mode on front camera in the future updates ? İ have both pixel 3 xl and p30 pro , i need to sell one of these , if i sell pixel 3 xl i am gonna miss night sight on front camera.

Am using AI-OFF mode only due to the very naturally looking not artificially saturated greens, reds and blues.
AI-OFF is more Fuji/Canon like colorwise. More true to life compared to the popping photos AIs or Samsungs scene enhancer usually produce.
In reviews it seems that 99% of us have already been brainwashed/conditioned over the years thinking non-popping colors = bad photo.
The real world is not as colorful as it is being presented on photos all over the internet .

If you switch to 40mpix you lose out on Huawei's AI processing which is way better than it was on the P20 Pro. I'm getting better photos leaving the setting on 10. I used to get fluorescent green grass all the time on the P20. They've come a long way in a very short time.

The Zoom is amazing!
Normal, 5X & 10X. This is hands down the best camera on a smartphone right now.

I notice that mate 30 pro has better quality than p40 pro specially at night I will upload some pics

I moved from p30 Pro to P40 pro - The main camera on par with better shots in the dark wors night mode?
Zoom is a lot better, but far from other cameras
Wide 18mm vs 16mm??? Bad move difference with main camera is not so big now and definitely far from Samsung's 13mm.
AI changed a lot especially in wide camera - pictures are not so punchy like P30's
Video is a lot better all over it but the zoom is not very good
Overall good improvement but not overwhelming.

Really struggling since the update I received yesterday ? Noisy night shots and a horrible pink/purple hue whenever the subject in the photo is black (my sofa for example). Would attach an example image but it doesn't seem to like me uploading anything ? Long term Huawei fan but for now I'm really unhappy. Preferred the P30 Pro.

Are you sure? Yesterday was doing photos from mate 30 pro and p40 pro at night in the same place.
P40 pro Got really sharper details when you will zoom photos on pc.

The pictures with the night mode are very noisy.
Do you think my P40 Pro have a problem ?

you answered your question yourself, your using gcam try it with default camera they will not win with p40. if you want to make a straight comparison use gcam also on p40 then comeback at me

I'd love it but I did not find any working GCam mod on the P40 Pro for now. If you know one, please tell me. From what I understand, it is difficult to port GCam on devices without snapdragon

Thank you. I am sorry but when I click on the button "Google Camera for Huawei P40" it sends me to another page with many different GCam mods without saying which one is for the P40. Can you please give me the exact link to apk I must download ? I am very interested.

Right now Night Mod on P40 indeed has some issue. Pretty sure it will be fixed soon in an update. Well its good already using Auto without Night Mod, where others left behind.

Be paitient, I have read the below on Huwaei's UK website forum:
Huawei P40 series has just received a software update in China, that installs numerous system optimizations including the camera features and brings the new AI 50MP high-resolution camera mode.
AI 50MP Mode?
As the names reflect, this camera mode is the combination of AI and the 50MP ultra vision camera. When a user clicks the shutter button, it takes a three-second long shot, similar to the night mode and takes a number of images then combines it into one.
The process creates a high-resolution image created by the pixels taken from the images captured during the three seconds.
You can see the difference when you pinch and zoom the images taken from regular 50MP mode and the AI 50MP modes.
Huawei P40 series equips 50 MP Ultra Vision Camera (Wide Angle, f/1.9 aperture) including the largest CMOS sensor to date. Measuring 1/1.28 inches diagonally, compared to 1/1.7 inch type camera in P30 pro.

Broken Hardware
I have several issues with the camera myself. As one user here stated: my darkgray/black couch is purple/pinkish. Indoor videos changes colours, lots of yellow tone slightly transitioning to purple/pink and overubeautifiyng the scenery. Zooming in and out during the recording makes it horrible as the color changes a lot depending on to which lens it switches. Also the zoom is very jittery and camera jumps as it goes through the zoom and switches lenses. As soon as the lens switches, it kind of interrupts the recording for a fraction or turns black and then kind of like a lightbulb burns. Visible outdoor at daylight and very annoying at night or in darker areas/indoors.
60fps videos have horrible quality.
I have posted some samples on youtube, which I cannot link here due to being freshly registered after lurking around for years. Look up ThePussycuz if you care.
Pictures at night are very noisy and horrible, unrecognizable in the dark.
I wonder whether I have a faulty camera and should send it in or whether it gets fixed with future updates?

So you think it's a software matter? Not sure whether I want to send it in, especially since I finally managed to get GMS working.

Sorry, don't know. In dxomark review there was some green and red color cast errors, and in other reviews the nightmode seems unfinished. As in not actually gaining picture quality. Have just tested the p40 pro in shops. That one seemed like missing HDR capability, blown out highlights, and was extremely sensitive in terms of blurry picture due to hand/camera shake. Hope other who has more experience here can help you. The phone is still new and ofcourse be better with updates.

S20 64MP photos look better than 50MP P40 Pro photos.
I can post two sample pictures of both devices of the same scenery and you can clearly see that the 64MP Samsung sensor does a MUCH better job!

I had a look at your videos on Youtube.
You have a misunderstanding how the camera works, so thats why you get wrong results - or at least something you dont expect.
Your recorded video in 60fps does ZOOMING activities - and the P40 Pro simply cant record in 60fps on other lenses than the MAIN lense. So its ALL digital ZOOM in 60 fps videos.
Otherwise on the 30fps videos, the P40PRO can switch between the lenses during zooming - so of course, it can use it native 5times zoom lense - and so you get a much better result in the end.
Hope this clarifys it for other people too.

I don't have very many samples but here's a few. Coming from a cheap $140 Umidigi Power with a blurry mess of a camera and slow specs, this seems like an absolutely insane jump in quality for the $200 I paid for this phone. It's not a Pixel by any means, but on a good day under the right conditions I feel this could compete with a few flagships. Excellent for a midrange phone, at least.

My Takeaway
The Good:
The main shooter is actually very, very nice. This will honestly get the job done in most situations imo. When something is bad, you'll notice it every time. But when something is good, you'll forget about it and it will fade into the background. This is the kind of camera you'll forget about when you're looking back at family photos and videos. :good:
It's reasonably fast with a quick shutter speed (see the photo of the moving fan). With GCAM vs Stock, I really haven't done enough testing to tell, but GCAM tends to have more natural colors and probably has better performance in a few low-lighting situations (?). However, the stock camera actually has a crazy amount of utility, options, and flexibility though with things like raw photos, exposure peaking, focus peaking, and a pro mode to where I honestly think I might prefer it over GCAM. Xiaomi did well with it.
The Bad:
The macro camera is pretty bad. You're much better off shooting with the main camera and then just cropping in if you really want macro shots. The macro's really just there for the spec sheet. I haven't tested the ultrawide much, but it seems good. Not as good as the main obviously, but certainly good enough for me to want to use it. As for regular photos vs 64MP photos, I honestly don't notice very much of a difference other than the resolution literally just being bigger numerically. It's as if they took the regular photos and just stretched them up to 64MP size. Don't get me wrong, they're still good photos, but the two look the same to me in terms of how much detail is actually captured when you zoom in to them.
Otherwise, I'm blown away by this phone. As a relentlessly frugal person, I feel like I cheated with this phone lol

What do you all think of autofocus? I switched from a Nokia 8 to this phone and the camera quality is great but the autofocus is pretty bad compared to my previous phone. Most of the times I have to take a second photo

I've tested the phone for a few days now and the autofocus is all kinds of strange. Sometimes on closeups it does a great job, and in distant photos it works well too. But when I need to take a closeup of a 3D print it usually fails pretty hard.
Wonder if that can be fixed a little but since I've upgraded from a Redmi 4X, I am happy about the camera anyway.
My opinion on the camera?
The main cam is great in most circumstances. The aforementioned autofocus is a bit weird but nothing you can't fight through. With decent lighting, it's gonna do an outstanding job for the price, but the details are a bit worse off. That's usually not that big a deal. The AI feature is a nice touch, I use it to fix up the sky later in the gallery app.
Haven't tested the ultrawide properly yet, but it's rather competent in the pictures I've had so far. Colors and detail are a bit worse than the main, of course, but that's a given.
The camera app is also chock-full of details and options, so I really like it.
Portrait pictures using the depth sensor are sweet. They have a convincing blur to my eyes, and while the files are huge (a portrait of my brother was around 41MB), you can always fix a bit of that. The selfie cam is also pretty competent, but struggles in less than ideal lighting. Don't even try using it in a dim room.
Night photos are great! They have less detail than the standard daylight pictures, but they are decently bright, highlights are brought back up again and I've gotten some pretty good results in the countryside at night, which is where I live.
The bad parts? The depth sensor and macro cam are only there for the spec sheet so Xiaomi can say it's a quad camera array. Technically it is, but the macro cam is disastrously bad. The 2MP sensor just can't get enough detail in. I've seen some great 5MP sensor, so it's a bit of a shame one isn't here, but what can you do, this is a 230 dollar phone.
This would have been a flawless camera array for the price weren't it for the macro. I'm personally very happy, it does the photos I need with aplomb, and 90% of them are great.
Personally I'm gonna give it an 8/10.

So for satisfied. Good at day and night mode is not much as I expected. I tried some Gcam and Arnova cam, NgCam, burial and other cams, but the stock cam did better compared to those. The problem is night mode doesn't seems good as expected. I dont want to compare with poco f1. I hope the update may change.

If you're looking sensor-wise,
Poco X3 NFC:
- more details in and around the center of the image (64MP + better tuned sensor)
- bit less noise (better tuned sensor)
Poco X3 Pro:
- better light sensitivity aka more light in photos (larger aperture)
- a bit better dynamic range (larger aperture)
- more details in corner of the photo (better optics)
Photo-wise, it's similar If you are using same Google Camera on both devices which means that there is no differentiation in photo processing.
Here is the example of center & corner details which I mentioned. This is the Poco X3 NFC vs Poco X3 Pro comparison using the same BSG Google Camera with SlibP lib on both phones. Poco X3 NFC on the left, Poco X3 Pro on the right.

Conclusion: Both sensors are great, it just depends on what you prefer more. More details or better dynamic range/night photos. Poco X3 Pro is in my opinion better all around as it still offers enough amount of details but with better quality optics which really matters, especially at night as Poco X3 NFC is terrible with lens flare effect.

Using the Find X5’s camera has been a great time, especially with a wide array of features, Hasselblad co-development and the MariSilicon Neural Processing Unit.
Wide and ultrawide both have a 50MP sensor, while the Tele lens has 13MP. The front facing camera has a 32MP sensor.

​Selfie camera​Starting with the selfie front facing camera: built into the bionic display as a small holepunch in the top left corner.
The camera has been quite impressive with high resolution selfies that capture a lot of light and natural colours, thanks to the hasselblad tuning.
I did enjoy using portrait mode with the selfie cam a lot more than usual this time around. It has also been fun, and is pretty convincing with its bokeh effect. The corner detection did work well in my testing, even in low light, without using the night mode. What’s nice is that you can adjust the aperture, the amount of blur, directly while shooting.
If the light is too low, you can switch over to night mode, which is also available for selfies.
Main and ultrawide camera​Shooting with both wide and ultrawide has been a solid camera experience. Both lenses are sharp and allow for huge 50MP photos, when enabled. These are around 10-20Mb saved to the device and retain a lot of detail. While I wish the photos were a tad bit punchier without the AI scene detect, I do appreciate the more realistic colours, which can always be adjusted in editing later on.

The main shooter also has a great amount of natural bokeh, thanks to its large sensor. This can be great for more dramatic close ups, food photography or pets. If you need more bokeh, you can switch the camera over to portrait mode and use the aperture slider to increase the blur. Getting things into focus was also always very solid, the camera generally always identified what I would have wanted in focus. There were only a very few times I had to tap a couple times to get the subject in focus.
Switching things over to the ultrawide camera, it has a 0.6x view, and what I really enjoy about the lens is that it keeps lines straight, where some cameras tend to warp the image. This allows for a quite unique ultrawide look and makes the lens much more versatile.
I did notice the colours were a bit different than the main shooter, being a bit more on the cool side but also sometimes warmer colour temperature. You can see this quite noticeable when comparing the photos I took of the same scene with the different lenses. Needless to say the photos did turn out still very good when looking at them individually.
The only downside of the camera I could find while testing some more difficult scenes such as backlit or fast moving was that the processing sometimes did encounter a sort of edge ghosting effect.
Although it only happens very rarely in some exceptional cases (I checked with the other ambassadors and they did not experience it yet) I found it still important to highlight, and hope it can be fixed in a future software update. Examples: Ghosting, Edge 1, Edge 2
Comparison against OnePlus 9 Pro:​My main phone of the last year was between the OnePlus 9 Pro and an iPhone. So I made sure to capture some comparisons between both the 9 Pro and the X5 as they both feature the hasselblad codevelopment.
What I could notice was that the OnePlus did brighten up the image more and did produce a more “punchy” looking photo. But also it generally turned out to be a bit more blurry on the OnePlus, especially when zooming in on text for example.
The X5 did a better job at retaining details, such as fabrics and text was very sharp. Especially when shooting in darker environments you could see much sharper details on text and a less grainy image but at the cost of less highlights.
The colours were a bit more natural, capturing the scene a bit better like I saw it in real life. I had a feeling the processing was toned down a bit.
Another thing that I noticed was that the X5 handled edge fringing much better than the 9 Pro, where things could easily get out of focus on the 9 Pro around the edge of subjects.

Night mode​The dedicated night mode utilises the NPU to process the image, retain highlights and reduce noise. The duration of how long a night mode photo takes to capture can vary from a second, all the way to 7s in my testing depending on the lighting situation. The results are really worth it and do speak for themselves.
What I really liked is how colours are kept, with a low noise and clear blacks. Also lights do have a good amount of brightness without being overpowering. Another favourite feature of mine is the long exposure, which takes some great shots without the need of a tripod.

Video mode​Coming to the video aspect of the camera, which has always been a difficult part for most Android devices. In my opinion the main camera produces the best video footage, which is clear, has good stabilisation and only a small amount of crop factor. It allows for 4K capture up to 60fps.
If you need a large amount of stabilisation the camera app also has a mode called “Ultra-steady-mode”. This makes the video feel buttery smooth, and in some situations where you want that gimbal style footage this can be great, but does come with the downside of having quite a lot of crop factor.
Another feature is the video portrait mode, which allows for bokeh style video in 1080p. In my testing this effect has worked pretty well and has been able to track subjects well even in low light situations.

Battery review​
Battery life in a day​The battery life has been very solid! After about a week of usage the battery has adapted to my usage and on average has always given me a full day of battery life lasting into the noon of the next day. The X5 also features reverse wireless charging, which can be great to top up wireless earbuds if they have a case that supports it.
After a day of photography, playing some games casually and watching youtube with general usage my screen on time resulted in 4:25h and 4% battery remaining. This is for me quite good, considering I had always enabled the full 120hz of the display and did keep it at a relatively high brightness setting.
Also thanks to the included SuperVOOC 80W charger, I never had to worry about needing to wait a long time during charges. Usually it was enough to top up my Find X5 within 15 min for an entire day if I was worried it might not last.
Charging speed​With the 80W charging speeds being insane (I never experienced a phone charge this fast other than the OnePlus 9 Pro) I went from 4% to 100% in just 30 min!
Conclusion Part 2​And with this I would like to conclude my second part of the review. Overall my camera tests have been really solid, I especially loved the colours the camera captured, and the large sensor allows for some really nice natural bokeh. Having a wide and ultra wide lens as primary sensors is a good combination, as they are super versatile. The zoom was lacking a bit, producing images that were still viewable but for my taste too blurry or processed. Battery life has been also quite solid. Especially considering I used the device always in 120Hz mode it easily did manage around 4.5h screen on time.

I'm not sure if this is a criticism of my review or the programme, if there is anything I am more than happy to hear constructive feedback to also improve my reviews for the future. So please do let me know!
Also, I would like to mention again that this review is entirely my own opinion and with everything I have tested I am comparing it as if I purchased it as my own device. As an iPhone and OP9 Pro user, I had a very good baseline of flagships to compare to and also point out differences. Check my first part of the review for instance, especially in the speaker department.
When there are issues I am more than happy to bring them further to OPPO, as I have already done with bugs and camera issues I have encountered, to name a few.
