Is there anyone willing to work on this? I would do it myself, but I fear my experience would just get in the way. I mean, it's an Ubuntu (Kubuntu specifically) based distribution built for phones, UI included. Screenshots look promising. I'd be willing to host build resources, website, email, chat, whatever for a team to get this done, or just one person. I would even be willing to work with someone and learn how a true porting process works for something like this. I've only ever done OEM ROM modifications before so this is new to me.
If anything, I'd like to start a discussion on this, it looks really nice so far.
Any takers?

I actually considered this, however since I was talking about development of a ROM / Other Development, I figured this section would be a better fit.
I think it's not possible since halium only works for Android 5.1 and 7.1 device trees

I still think this is the right section since we are discussing the "Other Development" portion of this... But whatever the mods decide, that's fine by me.

After reading and looking over the documentation, this is a complete Other OS. It not Android and won't run Android apps or services. It's like a mobile version of Linux in early stages. It seems plasma works by running on top of either PostmarketOS (albine Linux base) or Halium (KDE Neon based). In other words it's not really recommended for your daily driver but for another spare device you have lying around that you don't depend on for communications. This is a really cool project that I think later on has a lot of potential but just be aware of the restrictions for the time being.
This looks like a step backwards in terms of design language and UI. Reminds me more of windows mobile than a modern mobile operating system.

Don't let the UI distract from the bigger picture here. Plasma Mobile is a full Linux distro. It can run any UI built for Linux. Plus all it's apps too. Design wise the default UI is lacking sure, but under the hood? Android just can't do what it can right now, even if you are rooted, most things are still difficult to do like using Linux packages.

Hello Everyone,
I would like to applaud DZO, Mssmison, Vilord, fOObar, Zenulator, SrWalter and any other prognators of the Android Port for a couple different HTC devices. Its a growing concern that we are clogging up the sections dedicated for the WinMo versions of these devices with our Android porting threads. Its been a nice place for us to research and discuss the Android ports for our phones but I must confessed that its getting cluttered in there. I was proposing that we have a new section opened up for Android Porting and subsections for each model of phone that WIP has begun and is usable.
With this implemented in the XDA forums, I believe that there will be more spotlight on the accomplishments so far and open the road for speedier developments on the Android Porting field so that we have more options in the future for which OS we run on our smartphones instead of the one shipped by the manufacture.
I believe in Android on being the next dominent platform for mobile OS due to its lightweight nature, open-sourced, multi-device configurations and powerful tools that come from Google and the beloved community of developers here. I see in the next year Android sales topping those of the crappy Blackberry OS, the cool yet non-functional iPhone OS and the oldschool inadated Windows Mobile OS.
All you have to do is reply to this thread just saying you would like to see this happen.
Thanks Everyone,
Tallnerd
P.S.
Please dont use this thread for FAQs or medium talk.

Would be great to have a section for Android dev - anything to help keep the development momentum going.
+1 An Android Section would be great.
Yes, a MUCH needed thing. The ports are great, but for a month it seems like they have dominated the Vogue section
I totally agree. It's stepped away from normal development and taken on it's own life.
+ 1, would help cross-furtulize development and respondto commen user questions ..
This is it?? Come on people, we need to get more signatures than this.
I whole-heatedly agree! +1
Has anyone directly contacted the admin(s)? I feel like the popularity of the multiple development threads is proof enough that an Android division of the Vogue section would be worthwhile.
I agree, but I also think that as well as a general section we need a "Vogue Android Development" subforum like the native android devices have.
+1 to dzos suggestion. +1 to a new forum space as a whole.
just my +2.
EDIT, 12/12/10:
It looks like there is a ton of desire here and drive to get some major work accomplished. I just spoke with ferman via PM regarding the future of this project. I wanted to throw the idea out there, and I want to be a part of it, but I am (obviously) in no way equipped to lead such an effort. As I told him, I am much more the monkey-behind-the-keyboard writing code than the project manager at this point, and would happily contribute to any group that desires to further the Captivate's development.
So, without further ado, I hand the reins over to ferman and anyone else that congeals together as communal guidance. I'll be happy just to contribute code.
I thank everyone for their patience while I haven't been here to answer anyone's questions or even acknowledge everyone's involvement. Once I am done with release season at work, I only hope there's still room on the team for another monkey behind a keyboard!
I struggled with whether to post this in "General" or "Development" - I settled on "Development" as it is regarding, well...development.
If enough people are interested, I'd like to start the group development of a ROM, tentatively named "QAM". Cornerstones of QAM? No donations accepted, except for git submissions ("Free and In the Clear" - get it?); group development with specialization based on the team members' skill sets; widely accesible code with an emphasis on sound open source development practices; and clearly documented, well tested changes and updates.
With all of the drama here recently, especially regarding Axura, I think it's time that some of us try to steer this place back to what it used to be.
I'm an enterprise dev in my nine to five. As many have voiced, I have no doubts about my ability to develop a nice ROM for my own personal use. But I value my time, recognize that I am not as efficient in some areas (UI and UX, for instance), and understand from my professional life how much better of a result can be achieved when you've got a diversified team developing together.
Anyone that is a fan of Agile Development Practices will know where I am coming from. If anyone is interested in working together, let's start a dialogue here and now. If you're merely interested in flaming and thread crapping, move along - this isn't the thread you're looking for.
[EDIT - 12/06/10, 8:51PM] Posted an update within the thread. I didn't anticipate this much interest, but I'm glad it's there. I'm going to go through the thread tonight and start assembling names, etc.

@OP:
Think this is an amazing idea! Definitely can see a lot come from this.
Idea though: you should maybe put up some slots to be filled so we can get some development teams, focused on their own individual part of the rom, together, so we know for sure that this will be great.
The most I can help with is being the app-writer-assistant XD.
I have yet to see a rom with its own app(s)(not counting DG's lbs launch) and I would love to see one with its own music player, notes, messaging, etc. I'm not experienced at all, i just know some java and I'm still learning android developtment(i got 3 big books next to me right now).
In fact I wouldn't be offended at all if you just say "no, thank you". I just really like the idea and I thought that if i proposed this it would at least give some initiative to develop custom apps with the custom roms and make this project that much more...unique
i'd like to see and participate in some REAL developement. A lot of these "devs" (especially the ones complaining) arent doing much developement and instead are just piecing together different things REAL devs have created into these roms and then trying to extort "donations" out of people. There's a select few developers frontlining the kernel developement that are doing real, good work.
imagine if we had multiple people creating roms like cyanogenmod on here...

This is exactly the sort of thing this thread and concept will help avoid. The Rom builders that are causing drama do alot of work. And we all benefit. Even if they are getting more traffic and donations than the ones doing the kernel and other mods and making them available for the Rom and kernel builders.
I don't mind seeing a little competition in the thread titles. And each dev has an opinion as to what's best and thus we have several different roms. But the bickering I've seen is ridiculous. But understandable. There are no rules in place. No required donation. No licensing on much of what's up. Its a bit of a mess.
Id love to see what a captivate oriented community effort will produce. Team whisky is great but not all that works on the vibrant works on the captivate.

Here are some very nice suggestion!
Hello community.
As you all know and see there two different thread
Original Android Development
Android Development
In this two thread you can find different ROMs.
Therefore it is in some cases difficult to distinguish in which thread a ROM have to be. Some DEVs (@ the Android Development) think they are at the wrong place but the Mods doesnt want to move their thread.
Please make here you choice if you want the old subdivision (only Android Development) oder if you like the new one (Original Android Development and Android Development).
It would be nice if you can leave here your reasons for your choice..
Uh quite nice!?

Kernels/roms(org/non)/radios/apps/themes
And a stricter policy on tagging threads in the tittle, eg [ROM][KERNEL] etc

It is nice not seeing a 'new' rom being posted every two minutes where the only difference is the theme.
Perhaps the section titles could be a little bit clearer, For example: Android Development, and the other section called Themed Roms?
Id like to see even more splitting for ROM+Kernel and Kernel only releases, Its really a PIA sometimes to sort the threads out when your looking for something and it kinda scares off the newbie with a ton load of information and choices presented to him when his just looking for something specific.
Id say have a separate release for ROM+Kernel in 1 subforum and another for kernel only.

I think that tagging is very important, I prefer only one section, but with very stricted thread's TAGGING...
And I think that is very important explain the non-cosmetic changes in every ROM.
Regards!
Exactly, strict tagging, good references as to where the rom was based on, and credits where needed.
One thread.
only one Android Development
One forum for development, one for roms and stuff. I have no interest in reading about the majority of the problems people have in installing a ROM, but would be interested in seeing the technical threads (if we still have technical threads here...)
Merge the Development forums again and require [ROM] and a date in the subject.
Require all [ROM]'s built from another 'original' rom's sources to have [DERIVATIVE] or something like to identify them with a link to the source rom in the thread.
Pull [KERNAL]'s out to a second forum, again require a date.
Create a 'Technical' forum and move all the discussion, speculation and stickies that clutter up the other ROM forums into here.
Create new forum for non-android development (like Backtrack or potential Linux releases).
I would suggest using [KERNEL] instead

I like the idea of keeping photoshop roms separate from true developer roms like CM7.
Seriously, everyone who can use winzip and photoshop can make a rom and publish here, and from the looks of it, they do. It it were up to me, I'd actually not open a separate board, I'd delete them all.
As the creation of two separate dev boards was not motivated by any intention to make the forum easier for the user I'd have to say merge them back please. Seeing how it was motivated by greed and favoritism, indicated by the ROMs placement on one board or the other, I'd say screw this nazi maneuver, get your head out of your asses and realize you're all just tweakers and the ONLY REAL DEVELOPER IS SAMSUNG AND THE CM7 TEAM. So as the two forums are, only stock ROM and CM7 should be in the "real" dev forum. The rest of you take OTHERS work and tweak it (yes make it better etc etc, and we are all grateful for that). But come on you're not some super genius hacker dev here (and YES I appreciate your work and have donated but you are not "original developers"). As stated above this is about a "good ole' boys club", nothing else. Pathetic.

I just love seeing things like this...here at XDA, we know we love to do things that are unintended- hardware limitations be damned! Apparently, the same pioneering spirit is not shared as often in our 'rival' walled-garden friends.
Someone asked me today if I could install windows or another OS on an iPad/iPhone..not knowing the answer (NO, was the answer, by the way) I decided to do some research, and stumbled on this gem of a quote..
Yes, why does anyone want to run Windows 8 on iPad, It already have a perfect iOS 4 and the latest iOS 5. The hardware is not designed to run other Operating system on iPad, so i say that people do not do these kinds of experiments.

I've seen just as dumb and clueless comments posted by Android users.
Both side has all types of users, ranging from dumb to advanced. You can't generalize Apple users as not pioneering and Android users as pioneering.
There are ipad communities and devs dedicated to jailbreaking and other hacks for ipads, just like here on XDA. Only difference is iOS is not open source.
And there are just as many Android users without the "pioneering spirit". They use their Android devices completely stock, there are plenty of examples of that even on this forum. A lot of Android users chose Android not because of all the pioneering stuff they could do, but because it's cheaper than Apple products.

Maybe you should add a deadline as well. I don't mean to offend or accuse you of any misdoing, but I'd be apprehensive to contribute to this bounty. To contribute to any bounty hosted by someone with little presence in the community. Placing trust in an unknown person online can be risky. There's really nothing binding you to deliver or refund the bounty.
These questions above always arise in these form of threads. I myself won't participate for the same reasons. I have no advantage in these situations, my M8 runs wonderful on android. But everybody is entitled to their own opinion and i'm not saying these threads are bad at all so don't shoot me on my personal opinion.
If a dev wants to do it than he should do it out of free will and the stimulation of getting paid by a bounty is in my opinion not xda in it's purest form. XDA should be/was a place to share knowledge and development for free.
Hope you guys succeed with the bounty. Cheers and a good evening.
I believe this bounty is a bit premature. It's a great idea of course, but why don't we wait until the phone and it's software is actually released by HTC? Then people can get to modding it.

We (XDA) generally don't get involved in bounty threads. It's up to the individual if they wish to give out money. XDA will not be held responsible for any lost cash.
Though personally, I would suggest you look at how other bounty threads are done. Generally you only "pledge" an amount and record it in a thread. You don't actually PAY anything until the development is complete.
And this is extremely premature. No one even has a copy of the files required to develop this.

Not my intentions to mislead anyone. I was simply reading other threads and several people had offered funds but it's wasn't being centrally managed. If there is a better way than by means do it. My whole point is a formal fun shows commitment by community members. If developers see that commitment they are more likely to invest time on a project. I personally do not have the ability to contribute to this on a technical side, but I can put my money where my mouth is and express my interest.
Lastly there is a way to only plede with out providing funds until the whole project is completed. That's what I would recommend people do
The developer of Multirom had a Kickstart campaign to buy him a 2013 N7 so he could have the device to develop Multirom on.
Why not ask if he's interested in repeating that with the M8?

Now you have me confused. This is "Dual Boot" or "Multi-Rom" I am not sure of which is what. All I wanted to know is "Is it possible to have both WP and Android on the same phone? If not, will it be possible to replace the Android with WP?" Either way is fine with me, since I have 2 or the M8's available to use.
