Hi all
I bought a JasJam about an year ago, and it has been working fine.
About 5 weeks ago, I flashed it with HardSPL 7, Radio 1.50 and Schap's 3.60a.
It worked fine till yesterday when suddenly following buttons stopped working: IE, Messaging, Left & right soft keys, start, ok, green & red buttons. Rest of the buttons, keyboard etc are fine. There was no impact, no "sudden movements". The buttons just stopped working! I mean, one minute they were fine and the next minute, they were screwed.
I have done following to fix this (in order)
1. Soft reset
2. Hard reset (which shows that there is no problem with the hardware)
3. Flashing with Schap's ROM again
4. Flashing with 3des ROM
5. Flashing with Sleuth's ROM
6. Flashing with Cingular (WM5)
And still, no use! Buttons still don't work.
Any help would be highly appreciated.
Does the silence says: You have to live with it.
???
More Updates :s
Now I am not able to delete anything I type. :s Not even while using the onscreen keyboard! I can see that when i tap on the backspace button, it highlights, but the text doesn't get deleted! I have tried this in almost any place which allows you to enter text. :s
I think I will go back to my original shipped ROM and bootloader. :S
Strange stuff happening! Downgrading to olipro 1.10 has solved the backspace problem. How can a bootloader affect a function like that? :s
Back to shipped bootloader and ROM (not the radio) Still the buttons are not functional.
I also opened up the phone and cleaned the buttons, made sure all connections are properly in place. Put everything back together, and no, the buttons don't work.
What do I do?
I have tried a thousand other bootloaders, radios and ROMs... But these buttons wouldn't work?
Where are the geniuses like oli?
I have the exact same issue.. I have pretty much tried all SPL/Radio/ROM/App combinations, including the 1.01 IPL, original SPL, and WM5 that ships on the Tytn from HTC... And, just like you, the keys sometimes work, and then suddenly they stop. Restart or hard-reset seldom brings them back. I know it's not hardware issue because holding down the "-" and "-" keys while resetting always works. I also observe the LEDs on the front panel go all whacky. Sometimes the power LED, which normally blinks on battey power turns on and stays that way; sometimes it doesn't come on at all.
My guy feeling is that this is not ROM related, and somewhere along the line while I was enjoying the "flash-o-palooza", something got corrupted in the flash memory.
I am now looking for a method to do a "harder-reset" that will clean out the whole thing, reflash the bootloader and build it from scratch.
I think the buttons are not properly passing interrept requests to the OS, which as you correctly mentioned is a flash memory / bios problem. (I don't know a lot about hermes architecture)
HTC provides a diagnostic sd card in which you can check if the buttons work fine. I will try to get my hands on one of those.
Did you try going back to Wm5?

Yep.. Many times.
any luck with this? can u get to bootloader mode with the keys?
not believing that it would be hardware problem, I disassembled already some times my TyTn and I did not have sucess. If someone have sucess, post here please
the only obvious thing is that the keybddr.dll driver is not be loaded properly. how do u normally load the rom's? do u let the software boot the phone, or do you put it in bootloader mode first?
as I use a Windows Vista, the ROM upgrader have to be done in the Bootloader Mode
But, Sometimes the buttons works, and in next minute, they die again
its a misterious
Hardware buttons also not working
I am also experiecing this problem. Occasionally the hardware buttons will work, then if I open the slider they stop working. I have also tried updating firmware etc.. but it hasn't helped. The buttons will work if i press the left and right keys while pressing the reset key to do a hard reset. They work every time doing this, so it seems like a software problem. But I don't understand how a s/w problem like this can remain there even after firmware update and hard resets.
I have opened the phone up several times, because I have another problem, or two. As much as I love the phone it has been totally unreliable. It shipped with the LCD not working, I diagnosed that as a faulty ribbon cable, which I replaced, that made the LCD work. But then the earpiece speaker and the front camera didn't work. Now this problem... this is starting to drive me crazy.......
Hi, I have the same problem, I think. Sometimes when I play games, browse the phone or slide down the keybord the buttons below the screen just stop working. I have also tried to flash different roms, but to no good. There is a temp fix thou but it work slow sometimes, if I scroll with the wheel for a bit(the scroll time varies) the button seem to work, but only for a little while.
Does anyone have any news on this issue, cause i can't use any program that need these buttons.
I also have this problem, I guess I'll have to send it in to get it fixed :|
Problem Solved
I have managed to resolve the problem. It started compounding which made me think that it had to be a hardware problem. The first symptoms were that the front bottom hardware keys stopped working. Then the LCD would not align properly after sliding the keyboard, so I would have a white bar at the top and/or left of the screen.
Next the top hardware buttons stopped working, and then finally all I had was a white screen with nothing on it.
I replaced the flex cable that connects the front of the phone to the main board and it has solved all of my problems. I had already replaced this cable when I first got the phone because the one that came was with it was faulty. Now after just a few months of use the replacement one wore out as well. It seems to be the weak link in the build of these phones.

I don’t think you got the same problem as us, if you check almost all the other button problem threads they are about the white screen but since we in this thread have not gotten any white screens or some of the other symptoms I'm quite sure it’s not the same. Also some with our problem have tried to change the flex cable but it has not fixed the problem.
*edit - I did not put the angry smiley on this post.
Me too!Anybody can soleve it?I found that when they aren't woring,we can touch on screen or press ok button on the left once or twice, they work again!
I just flashed my girls 8525 and her joypad, softkeys, phone keys aren't responding anymore. They were responding at first, so I just figured a hard reset would do it. But it's still not working. The top message and IE button works though. Also, when I slide the phone open the softkeys there work. I can't even hard reset the phone.
Can you Reflash the phone? Maybe just a bad install.

Did that already...still not working
I think my phone is having the same problems as yours.
None of the physical buttons on the bottom of my phone are working. My scroll wheel works fine, as do the Power, Comm, and Camera buttons, and all on-screen "buttons" work, but it's like the bottom group of physical buttons on the phone are not responding. It's been somewhat intermittent, but now they're basically not working at all. I can't even hang up the phone with the End key, or activate the dialing pad with my Phone key.
I had done all of the WM6 Cingular upgrades from the Cingular website, and it seems my problems started shortly after that.
Just this morning, I ran the "Clear Storage" command, and now my system is running WM6, Build 18128.0.4.4, ROM version 3.62.502.3, ROM date 10/11/07
Have you tried flashing back to the ROM you had before that was working?
If it is not ROM related.......I would fear some hardware issue exist.
Can you go into the button settings under settings and reassign the button functions?
I'm downloading the ROM from HTC right now @
http://www.america.htc.com/support/8525/software-downloads.html
Will see if that fixes it, then I guess I will have to figure out where the previous ROM versions are archived, and download/install previous versions if this doesn't fix it.
Under the Button settings - the only 4 buttons that it allows you to reassign are all working fine. It's only the buttom cluster of buttons below the screen that are being "tempermental".
Oh - I'm fairly certain it's not hardware related because I can reset the phone, and push the Phone button, but then it quits working. It's like the buttons aren't being released / activated after the first time they're used.
Hopefully the ROM reinstall will fix it...
I'm having the same problem. All soft keys work for a sec after SR but go dead. I don't think it's rom based because I have HTC WM6 Rom, and all my troubles started after I put Pointui on my TYTN. I've Hard reset once already, might have to do it again. Anyone have any ideas why this is happening. I also get occasional white screen, again none of this happened before Pointui.
I get the occasional white screen, and I've never installed the Pointui that you mentioned.
Well, I just reinstalled the current HTC official ROM for the 8525, and without installing anything else, my buttons are still intermittent. I think it's the version of the ROM since the device is essentially "clean", correct?
The buttons seem to consistently function properly ONLY after I roll the scroll wheel. It's most definitely a software glitch.
edit to add: while randomly navigating around, I got the White screen.
Well, I've been on the phone with HTC, and AT&T's warranty department, and was basically told I could shove the phone up my a$$. What a POS operation.
Since my phone is out of warranty, they said if I wanted to do an "Out of warranty exchange", I could politely hand them $497, and they will joyfully ship me a replacement REFURBISHED phone. WTF!?!
In speaking with the warranty repair department, they said they would be HAPPY to take a look at it, and evaluate the problem, and call me with an estimated cost of repairs, of which the absolute minimum cost I would incur would be to the tune of about $129 - I was so appalled, I didn't write down the exact price. I told them I am 100% unwilling to give them money to fix a problem that I feel their software created, politely said goodbye and hung up the phone.
So, I'm essentially stuck with a phone that HTC / AT&T broke via their WM6 ROM update, and they're not willing to do anything (for free) to fix their mistakes.
My phone has suffered NO water damage, and no physical damage.
I did a ROM reinstall this morning, I did a hard reset (pushed the two dash buttons on the bottom cluster and held in the stylus reset button), and the only way I can make the cluster operate is to roll the wheel a few times, and then the buttons work (at least for one or two clicks, and then I have to roll the wheel again).
What a joke.
So, I guess I have to figure out how to revert to a previous WM5 ROM. Is this possible?
Everyone here is getting the same errors as me...the occasional white screen and so on. I've never tried scrolling the wheel to make the buttons recognize. I just hit the power button -> sleep mode -> power button and the buttons work again for a short time. LUCKILY phone is still in warranty and AT&T will ship me a new one <3 Buisness care...I'm thinking it's not software related because I installed schap's windows 6, on every last one of the hermes I've came across(About 10). Something might just be wrong with these hermes.
I have same problem with TYTN.... and what to do???
Okay - I bought a new phone over the weekend. As a last effort to fix the phone, I decided to google my problem, and I actually found the solution in the first link I clicked on. I feel pretty stupid, actually.
Slide your keyboard open, and look at the backside of the screen. The phillips screw at the bottom left of your screen - try loosening and/or tightening that screw. Mine was loose, so I had to tighten mine. My wife dropped my phone a week after I bought it (well over a year ago), and I guess the screw eventually worked itself loose.
My button pad now works like it should.
Guess I'll be taking my new phone back to the store and just keeping the 8525.
Did someone knof will that repair if i downgrade WM6 to WM5?
same thing is happening to my X01HT, wheel then it works for a few times and then it stops agian, wtf!?
WM5 downgrade did not resolve front buttons problems

I have had the same problem for quite a while now. I upgraded from the official WM5 that came with the TyTN to the official WM6. After a while the buttons on the front started to be intermittent. As well as the memory card "disappearing" and QWERTY keyword randomly dying (resulting in display fixed to landscape mode), both resulted in a hard reset to resolve. Anyway, to cut a long story short I contacted HTC who said they would repair the problems under warranty (as it was still in warranty) but due to my very misfortune the device suffered liquid ingress THE DAY BEFORE I SENT IT OFF!!! Thereby voiding the warranty (as notified by HTC after inspecting the device).
So, I would have to sort this out myself. I tried various unofficial ROMs, all of which work "for a while" (maybe a day or two) and then go back to being intermittent, and then not working completely. I have also used a WM6.1 ROM which seemed to work for a lot longer, but then stopped working just like the rest.
As of today I finally downgraded from WM6.1 as I was reluctant to do so before as I love some of the new features of WM6.1. But I took the plunge to see if it would resolve the button problem, as it was becoming a pain not having those buttons working. And the answer is........NO! After just a few minutes of me setting the device up the buttons ceased working.
I find the problem quite strange. I am a computer professional with an electronics background, and I am not convinced the problem is either software or hardware related (i.e. I am not convinced which is the problem). I have dismantled the phone on two occasions and all connections are connected perfectly. I have changed the ROM numerous times and tried different version of WM but all to no avail. One of HTC's solutions is to check whether a button is stuck, but all buttons are fine.
I have recently purchased Tomb Raider for Pocket PC, and within that game I have on numerous occasions "lost" the front buttons (on the occasions that the buttons were working). I happen to play about with other buttons, and after pressing the Comm Manager button all the front buttons returned to working order (but then they would stop working again shortly after). I tried this numerous times in Windows Mobile (6.1) when the buttons ceased working and it did not resolve the problem, however it still does in Tomb Raider.
After downgrading to WM5 I have noticed that with every power on and power off all the buttons and lights works correctly (in WM6.x if the buttons had ceased working then the lights would remain on even when in standby). So, it would appear in WM5 you can restore the buttons functionality by pressing the standby button twice (once to turn it off and once to turn it back on).
So, I am puzzled. Is it hardware or is it software? Any ideas? Is it a driver issue? Is it not informing a chip somewhere to power up the buttons? Is it a loose connection? Who knows? HTC certainly will not tell me (obvisouly because they want me to pay for them to repair it).
So, any ideas?
Adam
BTW the memory card problem and QWERTY keyboard problem were resolved by using an unofficial ROM.
Check that the "ok" button next ot the jog wheel is not stuck. Seems mine is, need to open the phone up and fix it.
I actually do not have problems with the D-pad but I'm getting problem with the Answer(green) and Hang Up(red) button...
Anyhow... anyone has a solution since then?
similar problems
hi i thought i would join this discussion as i have been having similar problems with my tmobile vario 2. i had it for a year with no problems and then the day i upgraded it to an orange tytn II the bottom buttons stopped working. i have taken the whole phone apart to check connections and everything seems fine and when i put it back together the buttons work fine for about a minute and then stop again. i have been tearing my hair out, i still have the original wm5 installed that came with the phone and before it stopped working it had been kept very well and not been knocked or dropped or anything. All the buttons on the top and side and the control pad and center button at the bottom work the only buttons that dont work are the 6 at the side of the control pad which pretty much renders the phone useless as a phone.
IF ANYONE SOLVES THIS PROBLEM OR HAS SIMILAR EXPERIENCES PLEASE CONTACT ME!!
I have an 8125 Wizard with WM6 RC5.
The phone was working fine until about a week ago.
Now the smart keys do not work but randomly start working after I press the key on the left above the volume control...as if it activates them. The messaging and internet keys never work anymore.
On the keyboard. it works sometimes and sometimes it doesnt. When it does not all the keys work...a few letters do not respond.
When the phone screen is activated by pressing power button when phone is on "hibernating mode" the today screen opens...then after about 1 second the software configered to the Email softkey opens and then closes.
Can anyone help...I have reset the device using clear storage...would I need to Hard reset, will that help. I had battery status installed and it also overclocked to 247....could that be a reason. I have now removed battery status. PLS HELP

Two things:
First, remember this is a bulletin board. Sometimes it takes time for people to get around to reading your post. Sometimes, 50 people will read your post before someone will bother to answer, and even then, the answer may not be a solution to your particular problem.
Second, as you saw on the other threads, I recommend opening and cleaning your button contacts. People are constantly surprised by the need for this, but if you have anything resembling an active life, you probably need to do this about once every six months.
Folks,
I recently bought i9505 international version (software version 4.2.2) and it worked fine for just over 2 weeks. Couple of days ago the two capacitive (back & menu) keys began behaving strangely. They randomly stop detecting the touch and therefore stop working. Sometimes both don't work, sometimes just one of the two while at other times both work normally. It's really frustrating to use the phone as back key is not working 80% of the time. Menu key seems to not work around 40% of the time.
I tried factory resets twice with no positive result.
Has anyone else had this issue? Does anyone know why and how to fix?
Thanks in advance for all replies.
Cheers
same here ...
but i can solve my problem,
while screen off, touch and hold the touchkey while you turn on the screen and unlock.
so i think its not really a HW issue,
any one can give me permanent solution ?
Hi,
I updated my Moto X Style to Nougat using OTA; that was followed by a security patch update OTA and that was also successfully installed (patch date 1 August 2017).
Post that update, the Back, Home and Multi-Task buttons on my phone do not work, work randomly, generate ghost touches (Multi-Task button predominantly). These ghost touches, suddenly show multiple tasks, exit out of application(s); change the active application to BG and bring forth the Task in BG to front, Split screen in 2 windows (Nouga) functionality.
Technical details of my phone -
Model/SKU – XT1572, 3 GB Ram, 32 GB ROM; this is dual sim device
Android Security Patch Level – August 1, 2017
Android version – 7.0
Baseband_Version – M8992_1255331.29.01.88.09R.CLARK_EMEA_DSDS_CUST
Kernel Version – 3.10.84-perf-g0653b98; [email protected] #1, Tue Aug 1 00:17:12 CDT 2017
System Vervion – 25.201.3
Build Number – NPHS25.200-15-3
I have tried many of the suggestions provided on MOTO Help forums including Cache partition erase and Factory data reset. No changes to Symptoms so far.
When the buttons do not respond to touch, the phone works fine; I can check my mails and respond to them without interruption by these ghost touches.
I tried to follow procedure to revert back to Marshmallow, however, the MOTO site that provided unlock code for bootloader, informd me that the bootloader can't be unlocked. Therefore the reverting option in technically dead for me.
As a workaround, I have installed an APP from play store that provides the Back, Home and Multi-task button functionality without interfering with other apps.
Can someone help and provide suggestions on what I should do next to identify root cause for this problem?
FYI -
I have raised issue with one of the Executives VP in MOTO Support department. But, as usual, their response that the device needs to be checked at service center. And, I think, they are going to go through the same steps and finally the diagnosis would to change the digitizer.
But, I think the digitizer is fine sine the on-screen keyboard works fine; it's keys appear in the same area where the section for Back, Home and Multi-Task buttons appear on screen. I can drag down the lower screen (in split screen mode) all the way down to the bottom end of screen by touching the border between top and bottom screen parts.
Thank you for your help in advance.
Warm Regards,
Ravi
PS: Apologize if this issue has already been addressed/resolved in some other thread. Could not get time to go through available threads in this forum to see 'em.
i am also facing same issue with the same BUILD number and when i have contacted MOTO customer they have informed that its a malware issue and touch issue and need to be repaired and they are charing Rs 9k. Issue start after upgrading to this version and not able to downgrade now and
One point that I noticed (and may be others too), if you rotate the screen, the nav-bar with it's Back, Home and Multitask buttons also changes side and works perfectly. However, any time you comeback to home page, the homepage is always shown in portrait mode, the nav-bar moves back to it's normal place (just above mike end of phone); and, lo and behold, the problem starts.
Do you have this symptom too?
Also, if MOTO service center is asking you 9K for issue resolution, I suggest that you get them in writing each individual activity that they will perform and what issue with the phone that activity will fix. Looking at the price, it seems that they have told you to replace the LCD Screen/Digitizer.
From what I know and observed with my phone, I do not think it's Digitizer (Touch Screen) issue. It appears to be more of software issue. Reason I say this because, when the nav-bar is in hidden mode, this problem does not happen. Also, if the screen is locked, you can still activate Camera or Mike by pressing in lower right- or left-hand corner. It's only when nav-bar layer comes up, the issue starts.
Are you able to use the onscreen keyboard? If yes, then I can say with guarantee that it's not Digitizer issue, because some keys in the keyboard (Space bar, some punctuation keys) are in the same area that nav-bar overlays when active. Check with the MOTO Service center why it is so?
Warm Regards,
Ravi
I recently got this issue and found this thread after researching. It seems to me there's no clear solution for this issue.
What happened to me was that I had no problem after upgrading to Android 7.0 but I started having problem after trying to restart my phone many times in a row because of the battery was dead. Since then it never came back to original even after changing the battery.
The camera quick start on lock-screen still works fine so I think there's some issue with software itself. I might somehow wipe off some code in the phone?!?
