Gmail not syncing - OnePlus 6T Questions & Answers

Hi all,
I notice that mails aren't getting pushed to Gmail app. I only receive mails when I manually refresh in the app. I didn't change anything, but according to me the problem started after reinstall from root. (although I don't see a link)
I installed another mail app and there emails arrive seconds after I sent a test-mail, Gmail stays quiet.
An idea I had was to remove optimalisation but I can't find the app in the list.
Any advice?

Same issue here. I ended up using Outlook since Gmail can't figure out how to run on their own operating system.

Receiving Gmail push messages no problem on 9.0.7. I have three Gmail accounts; all get the emails within seconds of them being sent.

Yep, same here on 9.0.10.

When I test Gmail it will show the first message but consecutive messages after do not notify. Outlook will notify every message. You can even open the drop down shade and Gmail shows only one of 3 emails sent, Outlook shows all 3.

Weird! I just had a pulldown with three Gmail's in it. Couldn't be a configuration issue?

I've been at it since I bought the phone at release. No luck so far.

Just for kicks here's a section of my screen showing two email notifications (note, I had two people quote me, so this represents two separate emails, not just duplication of one email).

problem with imap

I set up my e-mail app with my imap mail account and it recieves and shows me new mails, BUT:
- mails older then 1 week ago are not shown, I only see the mails I got last wednesday and mails I got since then, although there are a lot of older mails in my inbox
- when I delete a message it isn't shown in the mail app anymore but when I connect to my imap account from my computer the mail is still in my inbox
those are the two problems that annoy me the most with the mail app. can anybody help me sort out the problems?

This is a setting in the IMAP account setup. Go to your inbox, then Menu:Tools:Options, select the account from the list, "Edit Account Setup" and then click next a few times till you get to the screen with the pulldown menu for "Download Messages" and set it to "All messages"

FWIW I also have an IMAP account and I'm not having this problem. You know that the phone doesn't automatically connect to your server when you delete an email?
As a test, try deleting and email on the phone and then manually doing a send/receive. THEN check your computer: the message should be gone. If it is, then all you're experiencing is normal behavior.
thanks I figured the first one out really soon after the post
to the second one, I'll have a try. the same issue is with marking mails as "read". when I connect from my computer they are still flaged as "new". will have a try your way. thanks!

Gmail Solution

Here it is. Go Into your Gmail settings on your desktop computer. click on settings in the upper right corner, click on Forwarding and POP/IMAP, disable IMAP and enable POP for all email. I also selected delete Gmail when accessed with POP.
This solves the problem with email notification not disappearing immediately after you click on the email, it gets you all your email promptly and it does not show emails in your inbox, for ex. you have 3 unread emails, you go to check and there are not any? So it fixes that issue. It syncs perfectly with the desktop sever. I had constant problem with above issues. So yeah the culprit seems to be IMAP. I tested this on Froyo and 2.1 Vanilla. Works for both. I imagine it will work on Sense too.
I just noticed this problem last night.. the Gmail Unread Count widget tells me 6 new emails, the Gmail app says Inbox (6) at the top, but there are no unread messages! Going to Gmail on my desktop shows no mention of these 6 supposedly unread emails.
Just tried your trick, but the problem's still there. Running Froyo here.

I'm in the US, maybe that makes a difference. Also on stock froyo. It works perfect now. Make sure you have changed your settings correctly. I checked settings again and posted information is correct.

So what exactly is the gmail problem that requires this solution? Your description is quite convoluted and confusing. Email notification not disappearing when you expect it to, or messages not showing in your inbox? Either way seems to me like nxt says. Probably just a case of your mail being hidden in your SPAM label.
Notification tells me there is new gmail. I tap the notification and read the mail. Return to home screen and notification has gone. Bog standard and it works perfectly fine for me.

I'm in the U.S. too, on T-Mo.
I tried the old 'lets reboot and see what happens', and now it's all working perfectly. Thanks for the tip!
Does no-one else use gmail push via the normal email app?

Cool. Good you figured it out. I'm glad helped out someone. I couldn't figure out why everytime I checked my inbox there wouldn't be any messages. I went to desktop and saw the messages in my inbox that I had already read. Also once you click on notification you have to hit back arrow to get the notification to disappear. Solved that as well.

This happens to all versions of android. Its just not syncing with gmail correctly, so you phone shows no new emails, but says thier is 5 unread. If you log on to gmail you will see emails you marked as read unread. All you got to do to fix is to mark them as read from within gmail web client.

What do you mean by "Phone....says there is 5 unread". I assume you mean the Gmail client on your phone lists them in BOLD? If so, how can you say in the next breath "If you log on to gmail you will see emails you marked as read unread" ? You have just said they are unread on the Phone side, so why would you expect to see them as marked read in gmail web client.
I can toggle messages on the phone between read and unread and within a few seconds the changes are reflected in the gmail web client. So all good here.
Perhaps it can happen to all version but it does not happen to everyone. If it was a widespread issue, I think we would be hearing a lot more fuss about it. My Gmail works fine and does not do what you describe. I have IMAP enabled.

Honestly, the stock GMail app works like a charm for me; I haven't had to do any changing on my accounts. Heck, I was able to sync my University of Phoenix e-mail account as we use GMail as well.
Easy fix
All you have to do is select on labels, go to all mail, it will show a message you have previously read as unread. Then just mark it read again and problem is solved.

This has happened to me on a few occasions too. What he means is that when you get a Gmail notification THEN you check it with your phone and lets say you delete it with your phone. However, the next time you get sent an email and get a notification, when you check your gmail it will list your unread emails as (2) instead of (1). When you go into your gmail application to check, it also says unread (2), BUT you will only see one email.
Now if you go and check your Gmail using your computer, you will see both the emails, the one you read then deleted and the one you just received.
I know this is not a widespread problem because this has happened intermittently to me and has not happened for a while.
But good job on finding a fix for those that do suffer this small but annoying sync problem.

This is the bit where you guys have me confused. The only way I can tell unread messages in the gmail on my phone is by the bolding and the corresponding number in brackets in the header. So I cannot see how you can get the conflicting info within the gmail app itself on the phone?
Inbox (2)
Reply to thread Gmail Sol....
eBay Saved Search: Nexu...

Digest for setting-profile
Clearly I am missing something obvious. I can conceive how the Gmail notification bar indicator count could differ. But I cant see where you see the difference within the android gmail app itself. Is it that you get a different number of bold messages to the number in brackets?
In any case - main thing is you got the problem sorted I guess.
I used to get the gmail error but since upgrading to 2.2 beta it works so smoothly now.
Why are you redirecting your gmail account to the email application through exchange anyways?
The gmail application supports push.

Basically the number in the brackets show you have 2 unread emails but your phone gmail client isn't showing any unread messages. They are all gray and read. Then if you log on to the web client you will see 2 unread messages.
Its just a simple sync issue.
Better solution to the sync issue (where for example the phone says Inbox(2) but shows no unread messages):
Manage applications, filter all, Gmail Storage. Clear data. Then re-open Gmail and let it resync. This always fixes it for me.
I only ever get this problem after a) flashing a new ROM or backup, or b) turning on a phone I haven't used in a while.

Email app questions

Is it me, or does the email app not pick up all of the emails that are actually in my inbox? I went to check my email through the application because I had recently registered to a new forum.. I didnt see the email in my inbox on the email app on my epic, so I went on the computer and checked my email manually through yahoo. It showed the email in my inbox on the computer through yahoo, but I then refreshed the email app on my phone and the email still didnt show up. Does anyone else have this problem, is it the app? Also is it possible to have the email app recieve the email through push, instead of searching for new mail every so couple of minutes (or however long I set it to)?
Thank you!
Gmail will push. I normally get notification on my phone before my pc.

Email IMAP issues, not syncing

I haven't had this issue on the GS3, GS4 or Note 2, but it is present on the Note 3.
I have the E-Mail app setup with four accounts, two of those are standard POP3 accounts, but the other two are IMAP.
With those two, I've noticed that sometimes E-Mail do not show up, regardless of selecting "Push" or "Check every 30 Min".
Also, if I do get an E-Mail message with the IMAP account on the Note 3 and read and delete the message, it still stays in the server's inbox and will show up on my PC. -or- If I read and delete a email IMAP message on the PC, it will still will be downloaded as a new email on the Note 3.
So it seems that the E-Mail app is not syncing properly with IMAP accounts, as I've read (on other sites) that people are having this problem.
This is weird, since I've never had this issue on the GS3, GS4 or Note 2.
I hope that Samsung is aware and is working on a fix.
I am using the Root flash, but have not removed or froze any apps, as people said they had E-Mail issues after removing the magazine app.

On the Note 3 with the IMAP sync settings, it has Automatic Push, but also time-check for every 15 min, 30 min, hour.
I had it set to Automatic Push, but was not receiving any new E-Mails. Once I changed it to 30 min, it just polls the server every 30 min for new messages.
Still, the problem that reading/deleting E-Mails are not syncing between the Note 3 and my IMAP accounts.
I get home, turn my PC on and it downloads all the IMAP E-Mails that I deleted while using the Note 3.
On the other phones (GS3, GS4, Note 2) if I read and delete an IMAP E-Mail, it will remove it from the server, so then when I get to my home PC, it is not there, since it's been deleted.
So basically I'm now having to read and delete IMAP E-Mails twice, once on the Note 3 and on my PC.
Did you check the settings for processes deletes immediately. I know it prompted me for that the first time I set it up

Only when setting up a POP3 Email account, does it ask "Delete from Server: Never, When I delete from inbox". But for IMAP it doesn't have that in the settings.
Clear Data & Cache
@FAUguy
I was having some strange issues with the stock email app too, but all seems well since clearing the app data and cache as well as the system cache. In 'Application Manager', go to 'ALL' and clear data and cache in the email app. Then reboot into recovery mode and clear cache there. I haven't had any issues since doing that...except for notifications not staying persistent in the nav bar. Hope this works for ya!

Just got done doing that, and having to setup my email accounts again.
Last week I tried just removing the accounts and then setting them back up, but it didn't solve the IMAP issues.
I'll see if this works, since all the app data and cache was cleared.

My IMAP accounts emails are now showing up.
But there is still an issue with it not syncing properly with read and deleted emails.
Also, sometimes the LED notification will not activate, nor the status bar icon.

So I've noticed that even though one of my IMAP accounts does show new emails, my other IMAP account does not list new emails.
The only work-around it to go into the settings for the account and select how many messages it shows in the inbox,
such as changing it from 25 to 50, then have it check for new email and it will download. Very weird.
my note 3.. i am using 3 email account in email apps. i am receiving the mail of my default account. other 2 email account, i am not receiving the email.

Email notifications from Gmail app not always working.

I don't know if I am missing a setting but many times I will have no email notification and there are new unread emails in the gmail app. I have exchange and gmail addresses setup and I think it happens with all of them or it is just the exchange emails.
I went into all the gmail email settings and selected notification for every email and not just once, the exchange emails do not have this option. I also have vibrate selected but I feel no vibration when they come in. I put the gmail app on priority notification but that didn't help.
I have a 5X also that worked perfectly up until the December update, then my email notifications broke on that phone. I ordered a 6P because I wanted to try it out and I did not accept the December update thinking that was the problem but the 6P has the same email notification issue.
Anyone else getting intermittent email notifications? Is there a setting I am missing or something? Could this be because of doze?
Thanks

I'm beginning to think that it's an Exchange Server 2010 issue...as I've noticed that all hosted Exchange providers are going to be migrating to an Outlook.com environment. If your Exchange Server provider is on 2010, they'll likely be migrating you over the next 3-6 months...
If you want this before that time, you'll need to move your Exchange email manually to Outlook.com and be responsible for your email backups.
I believe that the same holds true for corporate Exchange environments.

I'm also getting lack of notifications from the GMail app (official) and it's kind of annoying. Any Fix?
Count me in. Tried a clear cache in Gmail, tried phone wipe cache but no difference.
I've seen similar problems around. I have my gmail IMAP accounts and 3 POP accounts and none of them syncs. I have to manually refresh the gmail app.
I'm another user with the issue. stock gmail and not rooted.
No notifications, wonder if gmail is having issues.
It has to be something on Google's end. As of yesterday, I'm having the issue with both gmail and inbox. Tried clearing data, disabling & reenabling sync, etc.. My wife has been complaining about exchange issues since last week.
Check to make sure you have gmail syncing on in accounts under the phone settings. Also make sure you did not turn off notifications from the app manager.
I am experiencing this also. I think other google push notifications are flaky too. I know my Google Opinion Rewards app has stopped notifying me. I open the app and that is when I see surveys.

I am seeing this issue on both Nexus 6P and 5X, with both exchange accounts, and actual Gmail accounts

I too am having this issue, I was thinking it was an issue with Google Fi being that I noticed the issue about the time when they replaced my SIM card due to another issue. But now this sounds like it might be a bigger issue.
I just went into the mail app, then to my google account, I then disabled and re-enabled notifications and for the last half hour or so I have been receiving alerts for mail. can someone else test and see what your results are?
EDIT: I may have spoken too soon, I just received 2 emails and didn't receive alerts.
I am going to have to resort to using a third party email app, downloaded cloudmagic and setup my hotmail on it and notifications are working fine with that app. No gmail notification but when I open the Gmail app there is the new unread email. This is happening with exchange and gmail accounts.
Did a Google search and it appears this is a pretty wide spread issue with Nexus 6p and 5X owners.

I am a Moto X Pure owner and I've seen a couple MXPE users complaining about the same. So it's not device oriented, more a "stock" Android issue. At least as I haven't seen other device users having the same problem.
It's really frustrating as I have 4 e-mail accounts and I'm not used to checking them manually.
I went to Settings->Accounts and I disabled auto-sync, then re-enabled it. I got one mail on time after that, but at the time the screen was on. So can't be sure if it helped or not.
Same issues with devices running 6.0.1 but older devices running 5.1.1 have no issues at all. Gmail, IMAP, Nine all have delayed notification or no notifications unless I manually check and sync.
Here's a link to the to the issue tracker if anyone wants to star and comment to get this some more attention.

Just bought a new nexus 6p and set it all up. Using the default gmail app for all my accounts and I'm getting notifications for all other accounts except for gmail. It's strange. I get instant notifications for the same gmail account on my BlackBerry no issues. So it is an issue with the gmail app for Android. When can we expect a fix?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Mine has been good since disabling and re-enabling notifications under my account in the mail app, some messages seem to be delayed but I am getting alerts.
Open the mail app, open settings, select your email account, 3rd item down should be notifications and it should be turned on, touch it to turn it off, let it sit a few moments to register the change, touch it again to re-enable notifications. Repeat this for all email accounts (I also cleared the mail apps data in the main settings>apps menu) and I am working again.
please report back if this helped.

Cloudmagic seems to be the only app that has consistent notifications. Tried bluemail and typeapp and even those didn't work, cloudmagic is ok but it doesn't have the ability to swipe to the next email when inside a message.
same issue here. any news?
