Samsung S8 forgotten? LineageOS 15.1 needed. - LineageOS News & Discussion

Well hello there. My post aims to address some questions to the people who are more or less aware about the development process of LineageOS.
Do you develop anything for S8? I hate and I puke when I use my phone and regret every single penny I spent buying this phone. If I had a chance I would literally blow Samsung Company and always buy Google's phones. Surely next phone will be Google's but till that, I am not willing to throw off my S8 so I want some amazing Google experience on it. Any news, updates or amlnything which can be said about LineageOS Oreo update for S8?

What Does This Mean For Us?

According to this article Sammy decided to discontinue production of the Note 7. Therefore that should make the S7 top dog again right?.. At least until the S8 next year. What I'm saying is maybe we're going to end up with Nougat a bit sooner?.. Since Samsung only has 1 flagship to focus on at this point.. Any other thoughts out there?

It may speed up the Nougat process a bit but I wouldn't hold my breath. I know T-Mobile is in the early testing stages still so we'll see I guess.
It means we'll get it when we get it. Everything else is just Internet scuttlebutt.
Probably means that developers who had the note 7 probably changed to a S7 or Edge, which will probably speed up unlocking bootloader and more subscribers to this forum section. Hopefully we get the latest Android by Christmas.
Thoughts?

Well I'm planing get the s7 edge after retuning my Note 7 so hopefully more people coming to this way and pick up this sección with more rom , mod etc. ..
More updates faster N

This like everything else is a misunderstanding. They are NOT going to ditch the Iris scanning tech, the s-pen and the rest. They have to much invested in the pen and the apps that go along with it. It would be beyond stupid to do so. My best bet would be no more phone labeled Note since the name is so tainted. I would bet we see an S8, S8 Edge and S8 Pro next year with tons of 3rd party reports of verification before launch of any. I would also bet that the many, many other series of phones will go by the wayside so they can focus on them.
We'll see but I am very skeptical about them ditching the tech from the Note 7.

I agree 100% with you. There's no way you can just abandon something like that. Esp. when that was a huge selling point for a like of people.

I request EVERY ONE SIGN THIS PETITION NOW!!!

First they sold a old hardware and software
Second they failed to fix any bugs and errors
Third they did not give a system upgrade to any market except china
Fourth Very poor after sales support
Fifth Still selling this device and fooling consumers in Asian and European markets.
Only a few people know how to switch to other ROMs, but what about the majority rest of people.
React now.

That's a punch in every devs face!
There are so many people including me that are happier with custom roms then the stock cos 12.1 which.
Thank Mr.Coldbird for marshmallow and his fp gestures, thanks to @acuicultor and @OrdenKrieger for the great kernel and device trees and all others for the variety of custom roms.
Those people who are buying this device nowadays don't care about updates or Android versions, otherwise they wouldn't buy a device which comes with Android 5.
Everybody who is aware of the Android update policy knows that every manufacturer makes their own update plan and those who want fast updates going to buy nexus or pixel phones or an iPhone
I have 2 zuk1's, both fully stock and both working as expected with only one bug. Both are suffering from the "waking up" syndrome.
The oldest zuk has been produced in Nov 2015 and since more than a year my daily driver...the second one is produced in March 2016 and in my possession since a couple of months.
I don't see any reason to complain as I knew I was buying "old" software and lets be honest, the hardware still still fairly up to date considering the price range the phone is being sold in. What you guys want is a phone with the specs of a Samsung S7 for less than 200€ new?! Do you really think that Lenovo is going to invest its time and resources in a phone which is no longer in production?
The phone's still on sale currently are NOT sold be Lenovo but people/company's who are trying to get rid of old stock...
Paid 239€ in a Electronic store. Fair price
Jau the lack of 64bit possibility worries me but otherwise it's fine.
Thanks to the great devs here it also makes me more happy than a Redmi note 2 I owned (just not the Mi5 I'm coming from) But enough OT from me
Just don't buy a Phone you don't like, there is also the web to inform yourself about possible OS updates from the Manufacturer or not etc.
But to be fair, Europe support of Lenovo/Zuk seems to be 0

Android Oreo is coming soon (c)tm

Many of us are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Oreo to our beloved Note 5 and it's on it's way. There is already an early beta build of it for the S6 based on a new branch of LOS15 I believe. It still has a few bugs but it's bootable a few things don't yet work but the basic's are there. It can only be a matter of time before a Note 5 dev picks it up and creates a build for us.
Have patience guys we should be enjoying a little Oreo goodness soon.
My source for this news is here - https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...nt/g92xx-android-o-samsung-galaxy-s6-t3663901
I just wish it wasn't Samsung based.
I read on samobile that the note 5 isn't getting Android 8.
Sent from my GT-N5120 using Tapatalk
No word officially from Samsung yet but it is likely that Samobile is correct and we wont be getting an Oreo upgrade from Samsung. While that is very disappointing it's not the end of the road for the Note 5. I'm sure there will be rom's ported from devices that do get upgrades and source built rom's too. Samsung does not care about us but luckily for us XDA has teams of talented developers who do care. One way or other we will be enjoying Oreo goodness we just need to be patient till it happens.
For reference.

Note 5 already gone through two major OS update. so if not mistaken, we will miss the Oreo update. Our only hope is custom rom porting.

8.0 is a big deal (compared to prev updates) battery wise, Data and managing apps is much better.
My main thing is the battery which has almost doubled, specially on standby bringing new life to this old phone I didn't care for
Anyone else bothered that a barely 2 year old phone is getting ditched by Samsung? Are we going to just accept companies obsoleting phones after 2 years? I'm not one for ROMs and rooting really so I don't want to hear about how Oreo is coming in that sense to the Note 5. Samsung should put Oreo together and release it for the Note 5. And if they can't then I'm not buying Samsung anymore. I don't care if they don't care. Phones should have a minimum of 5 year support at least for security updates. No reason why the Note 5 can't handle Oreo.

I agree whole heartedly with what your saying there phones n tablets etc should get more than 2 years support before being abandoned. The Note 5 is more than capable of running Oreo without a problem. But sadly Samsung will never give it to us we will now only get security updates no further OS updates.
Samsung's short sighted view is if u want the latest android OS buy a new phone every 2 years to get it. Yes I know they are in the business to make money but seriously they need to understand that us regular customers can't afford to replace perfectly good devices every couple of years and their corporate customers are unlikely to do so either.
I read somewhere that Samsung wants to get more of the corporate and government contracts that Apple enjoys for themselves and become as rich as Apple.
But Apple not only has nice hardware and the security that corporations and governments want they also support their devices for 4-5 years and that is a big factor in that market as well as the consumer market.
Until the high up's in Samsung grasp that concept and treat all it's customers better they will never have as much success as Apple enjoys. They seem content with things as they are and not caring a damn how many customers they upset and cause to stop buying their products because for every customer who leaves them there are millions more to replace them. The concept of gaining more customers while keeping existing customers happy by treating them right seems to be an alien concept to Samsung. Their attitude is we WILL do whatever we want in the pursuit of profit and to hell with those who don't like it there are many more to replace you.
I too have decided that I am no longer prepared to be treated like this by Samsung and my Note 5 will be the last product of theirs i buy. The sad thing is they build great hardware but their attitude towards customers seriously sucks and their short sighted profit model is unlikely to change any time soon.

Funny you should pick on Samsung out of all of the Android manufacturers; nearly all of them support their devices for only two years, even Google. So before you start complaining about how profit-greedy a company is, just remember that the company that *owns* Android doesn't even care to offer support for older devices. Also laughable that Google should make fun of Apple for ditching the headphone jack and look what they're doing with the Pixel 2. Pick a manufacturer, any manufacturer. You're not going to get the support you're looking for unless you switch to Apple.

You are correct most manufacturers do the same things but Samsung has reached the position of being the largest supplier of android phones on the planet and from that position of strength they lead and influence all the smaller players bellow them. If Samsung began to change it's attitude towards customers and treated them better then many of the smaller players would follow.
As for Google they don't make hardware only software the phones bearing the Google name are made by other phone manufacturers and again it's those manufacturers who dictate and control how long a phone is supported. Now Google could use it's licencing muscle to make the manufacturers behave better towards their customers and give better support but I don't know why they don't.
Android is open source true but the Android logo and Android OS version logo's are not they are copyright of Google and if any manufacturer wants to sell a phone with android on it they must comply with licencing terms and conditions set by Google. Now some of those conditions could be that manufacturers must give better support and for longer or that they must make available to the development communities the information needed to carry on support when the manufacturer no longer wants to do so. They could release information on things like drivers needed to interface with the hardware or better compatibility with the SOC's. No one is asking for the source codes to their whiz bang UI skins many don't like them and we certainly don't need them.
Google could use their position to make things better for everyone but I really don't know why they don't.

I know you're not talking directly to me but the reason I chimed in on this thread is because I have a Samsung. I've also had LG too and they're in the same boat with not updating their phones. Also One Plus and Motorola. I call all of them out but particularly focused on Samsung since I own a Note 5. That's all.
Yeah it sucks..I own a note 8... Really it's not a big update. They made a great phone with the note 5.

Dang really? Note 8 looks awesome. You're saying I'm not missing much by having a 5 still?
It's a nice phone. But the camera isn't better.. The front camera is worse in my opinion. Good screen and the size isn't much different. Slimmer but taller. Speed wise they are the same. Note 5 is just as snappy and fluid as the note 8

Don't support Samsung's Never no updates.

Please all give your support, if you all so are sick and tired, for having paid nearly 1000$ for a phone that still is on Android Nougat 7.0. If we are lucky some will maybe get Oreo in marts, but more likely first after launch of Samsung Galaxy 9.
I will never buy Samsung phone again for sure. Overpaid switzerknife.
Most of us are already running Oreo on our devices

You only have yourself to blame, should have done your research before you buy a phone, sure Samsung don't haven't the fastest release cycle but this is not something new, you must have a lot money to throw money around willy nilly without doing your own due diligence 1st.
We've had Android phones for eight years. You should know by now which brands release updates faster than others. And Samsung isn't one of them.
That being said, I'm in no hurry to get Android Oreo. Nougat is one of the best Android has ever released, and it's working extremely well on my S7 and S8. Besides, they've been releasing security patches quite regularly, so they can release Oreo whenever they feel is ready.
What on earth gave you the idea that anyone cared in slightest what you think about samsungs release schedule, moreso what you plan purchasing or not purchasing (as the case may be)
Seriously i want to know so that i can hopefully make them stop.
Maybe a mod will see this and grant my second place wish, which is to lock this thread as not only does it not ask a question or answer one, it has no positive value whatsoever.
Sorry man people are right ! Samsung is not the fastest to give update but they aways bring the upadate for example oreo will be out at the end of february if you dont like to wait costom roms wit oreo as many as you like in here.....
Why when they do reviews they never complain about Bloat and no Updates?
It is like no reviewer has a clue..... S7, S8, S9
You get one update maybe 6 months after it is released. Yes Oreo is out 9 months after it was released, good luck getting the next release after Oreo.
You do not want any Samsung Apps .... good luck disabling them.
Me I am going with the next Pixel Phone I have had it with Samsung.

Why would you respond if you didn't care? ?
To be honest, for myself, having the newest Android isn't a problem.
I prefer having a phone with good overall hardware and processing capabilities. Also, so far, nothing very important comes to android oreo.
For instance, I prefer having a S8, 700~$ android nougat phone with Samsung Dex capabilities and great camera rather than having another brand, 500-600$ish android oreo phone with mediocre camera and hardware.
Exactly! There's so much to enjoy the S7 and S8 with Nougat.
I have oreo on my s8 and there isnt really a whole lot new, some, but not a lot.
I researched heavily into update releases, I originally bought the Sony XZ1 Compact with Oreo as Sony are supposedly really good at updates and to be honest they arent bad but the default Oreo software on those phones is seriously flawed with constant reboots on a number of exchanged devices. I ended up with Samsung as for the price they are ok, not super slow but not super fast and I've got a great little phone too.
Pixel 2 was a lot more expensive at the point I upgraded but if not Id have gone for that purely because of the updates.
My only disappointment with my S8 is the curved screen which looks great but serves no real purpose and inhibits the use of glass screen protectors. I now have to use a bulky wrap around case or take a big expensive risk. If it had a flat screen it would have been easy to get a screen protector for it. Oreo is great and im waiting for the final release too but I already have the beta and would be happy with Nougat too if I wasnt in beta.

[poll] Xiaomi A2 Future, is it dead or promising

So i bought this phone since it released in my country, i bought the 6Gb ram version and i was too excited about, Android one phone with great specs according to the price, but i am a lil bit disappointed right now,
The update releases is a bit confusing as we can see what's happening with pie updates.
The development is too slow as there no working twrp and related stuff.
Forgive my ignorance as coming from HTC M8 with its big development from its early stages , this phone disappointed me, but dont get me wrong i am happy with the phone regarding its battery life what annoying me a bit but the fast charger make it up to me.
So based on ur experience guys what do u expect guys and is the fourms going to be on fire soon or is it going to be like that all along ?
its going to be alive for sure, but you won't get first-class support, also for sure. this phone is good for people who are on a budget yet want to have a fairly up-to-date software (including security updates) and don't expect pixel-level support. If you are one of these people, A2 is probably one of the best phones you can get. But if you expect a pixel-level support then you should probably go buy pixel
It will get better, but don't expect anywhere near the support your old phone had, that was a flagship and a very successful one, I don't I've tried a quarter of the roms that were available for my m7
Yu are being given more than just descent specs for a more than descent price but no updates should be fast like google pixel ... well not gonna happen
Software r&d is not cheap as yu can see many here on xda develop on in there spare time and with donations and i dont think even though xiaomi have great revenue and sales they are yet ready to speed up the process (FOR ME UPDATES ARE ALREADY FAST ENOUGH EVEN NOW BETTER THAN MY SAMSUNG GALAXY S7 THAT WAS WORTH 49999 rs)
Moral of the story is = just because yu are given good hardware at a fine price dont expect them to give yu fast software support too ( only if yu have a pixel )
Otherwise apple phones get ios for really long time( enjoy there new emoji in every damn update )

Mates i didn't expect pixel level of support at all, it just i didnt think Android One phone would get low development and update like that,
I can run Android pie on my M8 which pretty old phone now, but u cant run it on my 2018 Android one device, does that make any sense to you mates ??
On the other hand pocophone got it's official TWRP and keep being updated while the price difference is t that much though.

Why the hell are yu guys quoting me when i am making the exact same point that yu made
This is a budget phone not pixel lile ( COMPARED TO MY S7 JUST TO MAKE A POINT and even if my s7 is a flagship it gets security patches at end of each month whereas this MI A2 Gets updated on start of each month and that too sometimes more than one update )
I used to use an OPO which had and to a certain extent still has a lively developer scene (It's been a few months since the first Pie popped in the forums for it).
I don't neither expect nor foresee that sort of activity over here. This is a mid-range budget phone.
Then again, at least, bootloader unlock is hassle free.

I came from an OPO myself. And kind of disappointed with lack of development for now. It's a new phone and hopefully it'll pick up. It's a good phone don't get me but it's a "meh" or "alright" phone after a few weeks. Definitely a forgettable phone. Feel like I should've gone pocophone fone (1)
