Hi,
i bought a very cheap 2012 Nexus 7 and want to use it as car dashboard. Is there any chance that I get USB OTG and Charging working on an Android 7 ROM? I only found the Timur Kernel which runs on 4.2 and doestn't work on my Tablet with a version I found (bootloop).
Otherwise...is my plan possible, if i switched to a 2013 version?
Greetings

Hello, I have a Google Nexus 7 tabled and I like it very much. The only flaw I see is the screen colors but for budget tablet is is ok.
I have a question: Does Nexus 7 supports any microUSB to HDMI cable ?
I have read numerous posts in the internet about how Nexus 7 does not support neither HDMI or OTG - but I have a OTG cable and it works great, mice, keyboards, flash drives and even a 1 TB external hard drive work great on the tablet.
So I bought this cable: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-1-5ft-1-5...912&pid=100015&prg=1085&rk=1&sd=230893786628&
but after I received it - I can't make anytong to make the cable work.
does anyone have any info on how to make it work or is is a possibility at all to have HDMI output on Nexus 7.
thanks.
As far as I know, n7 doesn't support any kind of HDMI out. As they have labeled that item as for the nexus 7 they are wrong... Correct me if I'm wrong.

Nope, sorry but there is no way. Unless no way known to me...and believe me, I made a very wide research!
i found this dock on amazon http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galax...id=1378589679&sr=8-1&keywords=multimedia+dock i was wondering if anyone here thinks this dock would work for a nexus. i want to connect a portable hard drive, wireless keyboard, charger and hdmi all in one. this seems to meet my needs.
I've seen a lot of comments about the Nexus 4 not supporting usb OTG devices, so it will probably only work for charging, & maybe not even that.

No, the Nexus 4 does not support USB OTG. The HDMI output probably uses MHL for USB A/V while the Nexus 4 uses SlimPort for USB A/V. This will only be useful for charging; even then it might not charge it due to the MHL chip in it.

OTG is supported in CyanogenMod's 10.1 M2
Now the question is Will CyanogenMod's 10.1 M2 support the Samsung Galaxy Smart Dock?
First of all I'm not the terrible newbie I appear. I logged in this site and it asked me to tie my user name with my google profile and now I'm a 2 post wonder.
Anyway I installed and rooted the Android 5 Lollipop on my Nexus 7 last night and then tried to hook a DAC to it. Previously running USBROM w Timur kernel so I know hardware is fine.
The exact same DAC's are working perfectly under Android L Developer preview on my Nexus 7 2013.
Anybody else try to hook an external USB DAC up?
Also on my USBROM set up I had a Y OTG cable for the DAC and simultaneous charging. I cannot charge through the OTG Y cable now.

I installed Lollipop 5.0 on my Nexus 7 2013 and USB DAC's work perfectly.
I was thinking maybe the root process or kernel patch broke it so I .........
So I checked the md5 checksum on the grouper Nexus 7 2012 and it was fine. I reinstalled it via fastboot and tried again before root. Negative results. No USB DAC is working on my Nexus 7 2012. When you put on headphones and plug in the OTG and DAC it will hiss for a second and then release, like it's trying to connect and then releases the device. I've tried with 2 OTG's and 4 DAC's all of which work on Nexus 7 2013 and 5.0.
Something is broken with USB DAC support on Nexus 7 2012 5.0 update, at least here on my device. Again, yesterday I had USBROM installed and it worked perfectly so I doubt it's a hardware issue.
Can someone else confirm?
yeah just tried a previously working USB sabre mini dac and no bueno.. it has a small light that lights up but nothing for sound output
Yeah, I tried it on E18. It did recognise the DAC (I know because the volume slider popped up for a moment) but there is no sound coming through through the DAC/Amp. Tried USB Audio Player Pro and it worked. Just did the latter to ensure I have the DAC properly connected. I will try it on my son's N7 2013.
I was hoping Android 5 would solve DAC compatibility issues. I noticed that Android version number can affect DAC compatibility-- for instance, the Note 2 talked to the HRT Musicstreamer 2 but not the E17 on Android 4.1.2. On Android 4.3, it's the other way around.
I would try other DACs, I think it is an issue with USB enumeration, as the hardware should compatible. If another DAC works, which I expect many will, then it will be interesting to see which devices work.

I have no less than 6 DAC's at my house and none work on Nexus 7 2012. They all work on Nexus 7 2013. Confirmed with a couple other people I know that DAC support on the 2012 isn't working. It's broken.
Actually not a big deal for me but just reporting what I found in the hopes that they'll fix it. It was one of the major bullet points of Android 5.

Thanks for clarifying.
It sure would be nice to have USB OTG + Charge and full DAC compatibility with Android 5, but at this point I am really thinking I'm over the 2012. I might pick up a 2013 because the Nexus 6 is pretty dissapointing to me.
Hi,
I'm as disappointed as U. Waiting for the updates for ages but got nothing. We've been deceived by Google's promises.
Somebody need to check the kernel first. Seems Google using old kernel which I don't know what it's capable of. Maybe no improvement on the kernel from the features PoV.
I'm monitoring with U on this thread might somebody get enlightenment
I'm sure some dev will fix it. I hope lol. Dash install in need of lollipop

In the interim I have rolled back to USBROM with Timur Kernel. It does everything. USB Audio, 3G dongle, etc.
Although it was a bit of a challenge. Every time I tried to copy the backup of USBROM from my computer to the TWRP directory it would fail saying it couldn't copy data.ext4.win back to the device. Really aggravated me I did a NANDROID backup and couldn't restore it. Then I got smart and moved the file with an adb push from computer to Nexus and then all was well again.
Hi everyone
I've just been given a nexus 7 buy a family member who doesn't need it anymore.
I will mainly be using it to watch films. I understand the tablet is able to use USB OTG which is how I will watch films, what with the limited memory of the tablet. But has anyone managed to get it to charging at the same time?
Thanks in advance everyone.
There is zero support for this garbage tablet SM-T290. It is impossible to root It is impossible to unlock the bootloader and even when you do this stupid thing still won't charge while having a thumb drive attached with an OTG cable. This tablet is the most useless POS I've ever seen!! I have lost a month of my life to this stupid thing.
I will ask here to see if anyone can recommend anything else. I need
8 inch
Low cost (I need 20 of them)
Android 10
Must work with an OTG cable.
I just got the SM-T290 for casual home use. I unlocked the bootloader and flashed the Nexus 10.0 custom rom on it within a few hours.
I've been doing some searching for 8" tablets and it doesn't look like there's a market for them anymore. Everything I'm finding is 10" except for Fire Tablets.

How are you trying to charge with a USB OTG cable attached? Does the cable allow 2 devices attached?

I had the Nexus 7 with timur's kernal for automotive installs it was cyanogenmod. I collected a bunch of otg Y cables because they worked like gangbusters. I also purchased a "lava otg silmucharge charger" for almost $100 and this didn't work either. I can either hook up a HDD or charge, it will not do both
