[Q] HDMI output from Nexus 7 ? Is it possible at all ? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I have a Google Nexus 7 tabled and I like it very much. The only flaw I see is the screen colors but for budget tablet is is ok.
I have a question: Does Nexus 7 supports any microUSB to HDMI cable ?
I have read numerous posts in the internet about how Nexus 7 does not support neither HDMI or OTG - but I have a OTG cable and it works great, mice, keyboards, flash drives and even a 1 TB external hard drive work great on the tablet.
So I bought this cable: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-1-5ft-1-5...912&pid=100015&prg=1085&rk=1&sd=230893786628&
but after I received it - I can't make anytong to make the cable work.
does anyone have any info on how to make it work or is is a possibility at all to have HDMI output on Nexus 7.
thanks.

As far as I know, n7 doesn't support any kind of HDMI out. As they have labeled that item as for the nexus 7 they are wrong... Correct me if I'm wrong.

Nope, sorry but there is no way. Unless no way known to me...and believe me, I made a very wide research!

HDMI In for Nexus 7?

Hey all i was kind of wondering if there was an adapter that could go into the micro usb port on my N7 and transmit HDMI in to it from an Xbox 360...I am an avid traveler and gamer and like to bring my xbox with me as well as my N7 every where I go and wanted to see if I could use the N7's crisp screen as a monitor (though it would be small obviously). Anyone know of such an adapter? I have been searching on Amazon for something like this but was not sure how to tell the difference between a standard HDMI output micro USB adapter to one that received input. Thanks in advance for any help I may receive

Short answer... no. Definitely not with any cable or adapter... as for wireless... I'm about 99.9% sure the answer is also no... not without setting up some sort of in-home personal cloud gaming server using your own game console then stream it over the air and sync a controller to your n7... lol that would be awesome... but afaik no such thing exists

[Q] buying Nexus 7 - newbie help

Hey there, i will be buying my first tablet - Nexus 7 (32gb) as i will be using it for gaming, reading, watching TV shows/movies etc
My main concern was regarding connecting storage devices
1. How could i connect the tablet with a USB Flash-drive? could i use an OTG USB Connector to sync the two so i can get data from my flash-drive via the tablet? is there a specific one i should get or any should work and where can i buy one. is it compatible?
2. As there is no HDMI input, how can i connect the tablet to my TV, if i wanted to show pictures on the TV. Could i get the MHL Cable HDMI connector, as i saw best buy carries them.
Thank you

yes this supports usb otg cable and it works flawlessely and you can also stream movies from usb flash drive
just google it how to use otg cable on nexus 7
and for the hdmi i doubt i heard that this tab doesnt support?? but still not sure
You can attach an OTG cable. You can either do it rooted or you can get apps to help you stream data from the external drive. Many people like to use Nexus media importer, though it's a paid app. People buy from 80 cent cables to $5+ ones and work fine. Just read reviews on what you plan to buy.
There is no HDMI support though in 4.2 update that is coming out soon, you can stream to your TV if you get an adapter.
While I love my N7, if you are huge on media consumption, you might want to look at the kindle fire HD. The only downside is that you are stuck in the amazon ecosystem but it has the HDMI support.

The above is only a rumor.. Its not confirmed.. Matter a fact there is some speculation that the device is not capable for full mira-cast encoding.

Would also like to know if you can use USB2GO with the nexus...
Any OTG cable will work.. don't pay $20 for a cable that is only worth $1.. unless you're buying like 5 or more in a pack.. Amazon got some good ones for like a dollar and they ship from the States
Also the kernel will have to support USB host for OTG to work.. not sure if the stock kernel does
So do external storages work, unrooted?
If you don't root you can get an app that lets you view, down load or stream video files or documents from stick drives or card readers. It does not allow you to write to the cards however. It works great for those things.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.homeysoft.nexususb.importer
There is a free version that only does photos.I suggest using it first to test and see how you like it.The above version is a $3 app so make sure the free one works before buying the other. jmo

If you need to write to a card you will have to be rooted and wait for them to iron out the multi-user problems with the 4.2 update before the stick-mount app will work again. It is broken at present but once working again will require root to mount the sd card so files can be transferred via a file explorer app to the sd card.

Does it have enough power for a usb hard disk?

It seems that CIFS is also an issue with 4.2 ... Google must REALLY want us using Play to seemingly block the CRAP out of doing any R/W to external sources.
Of course it could just be a "side effect" of the new Google "security feature" that locks USB access to the process that spawned it.
I want to know how the Nexus Media app is getting away with it. Maybe it's because everything is IN the app - so the USB access continues to work.
I dunno ... all I DO know is that my Nexus 7 is staying on 4.1.2 until it's fixed.
Tried with the one I have from the galaxy s3 and it was not recognized. The sgs3 is rooted stock. When I plug it into the galaxy, it immediately sees the USB host connected
Edit- tried it with a USB mouse and it worked fine
Kevin
I would like to know more information about this matter too. I'm really new to otg stuff, but I do know that you need to be rooted un the nexus 7 for it to work fine.
I think it needs to be rooted to use USB OTG. i have a 2$ USB OTG working fine with my unrooted S3 but on the nexus 10 it won't regconize.
Just tested it with a 5 bucks OTG, so far:
Mouse razor naga: OK.
USB keyboard microsoft: OK.
Pendrive Kingston 4gb: nothing happens.
For me it's ok I just wanted to use it for the keyboard. No problem at all.

This is a good OTG cable. Works on anything that supports OTG. Lifetime warranty, good price, super fast shipping. I have a few and use them on all my devices.

+1 on that cable. Like the angle & not too short or long. Nice & sturdy.

I'm looking for a OTG cable/adapter in the UK and wanted to whether mini USB OTG adapter will work with flash drives and external drives, or do I an micro USB OTG adapter? What's the difference?
Bought this one and it works but I wouldn't recommend it because the male end that goes into the Nexus10 is a little too long and creates a loose connection. I'm gonna order another type tonight.
Stickmount works great on my rooted nexus10.

I have a otg cable that works fine on my S3 but I plug it into the nexus and I get nothing. The S3 auto detects the cable alone but nothing at all happens when I plug it into the nexus no matter what, if anything, is plugged into it. I just want to use it for mouse and keyboard.
Think I should buy another cable to try out or am I missing something?
A cheap OTG cable that came bundled with a $60 tablet my mom ordered works on my Nexus 10.
On an unrelated note, Samsung should of bundled a USB OTG cable.

DO NOT GET THIS ONE!
I have the same one and it completely blocks the headphone port which is right under the micro-usb port. The micro-usb plugs in with the flat part facing you / the screen so this one would obviously angle down and over the headphone port. Find one that is either straight or angles the other way.

[Q] support for HDMI and USB OTG

thanks but i dont think i can find this in iran and i already got a cable for my note
anyway i dont really care about this
woops sorry! i tought its a cable is it safe:?
For HDMI out I don't think your cable will work. Majority of older phones use mhl for HDMI out but the n4 uses slimport and mhl cables will not work
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
1. Nexus 4 uses Slimport, not MHL. You'd need to buy a new cable anyway.
2. OTG only works with external power, and cannot work simultaneously with Slimport (No HDMI+OTG).
3. There is Miracast, but it sucks.
damn i bough cable wanted to experience playing games on hd tv but my phone bricked after that no chance let me see if that works whit htc one s (of my father)
anyway mine got a hdmi input and a power input and a micro-usb output
and slim port is it better? never heard about it

I just got the Rocket fish Miracast dongle from best buy. Works flawlessly. Streaming Netflix, HBO, CNN, etc. For gaming not useful, but for a media center experience, is perfect.

does this multimedia dock work with nexus 4?

i found this dock on amazon http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galax...id=1378589679&sr=8-1&keywords=multimedia+dock i was wondering if anyone here thinks this dock would work for a nexus. i want to connect a portable hard drive, wireless keyboard, charger and hdmi all in one. this seems to meet my needs.
I've seen a lot of comments about the Nexus 4 not supporting usb OTG devices, so it will probably only work for charging, & maybe not even that.

No, the Nexus 4 does not support USB OTG. The HDMI output probably uses MHL for USB A/V while the Nexus 4 uses SlimPort for USB A/V. This will only be useful for charging; even then it might not charge it due to the MHL chip in it.

OTG is supported in CyanogenMod's 10.1 M2
Now the question is Will CyanogenMod's 10.1 M2 support the Samsung Galaxy Smart Dock?
