Hey there, i will be buying my first tablet - Nexus 7 (32gb) as i will be using it for gaming, reading, watching TV shows/movies etc
My main concern was regarding connecting storage devices
1. How could i connect the tablet with a USB Flash-drive? could i use an OTG USB Connector to sync the two so i can get data from my flash-drive via the tablet? is there a specific one i should get or any should work and where can i buy one. is it compatible?
2. As there is no HDMI input, how can i connect the tablet to my TV, if i wanted to show pictures on the TV. Could i get the MHL Cable HDMI connector, as i saw best buy carries them.
Thank you

yes this supports usb otg cable and it works flawlessely and you can also stream movies from usb flash drive
just google it how to use otg cable on nexus 7
and for the hdmi i doubt i heard that this tab doesnt support?? but still not sure
You can attach an OTG cable. You can either do it rooted or you can get apps to help you stream data from the external drive. Many people like to use Nexus media importer, though it's a paid app. People buy from 80 cent cables to $5+ ones and work fine. Just read reviews on what you plan to buy.
There is no HDMI support though in 4.2 update that is coming out soon, you can stream to your TV if you get an adapter.
While I love my N7, if you are huge on media consumption, you might want to look at the kindle fire HD. The only downside is that you are stuck in the amazon ecosystem but it has the HDMI support.

The above is only a rumor.. Its not confirmed.. Matter a fact there is some speculation that the device is not capable for full mira-cast encoding.

Anyway I can connect my external USB hdd to the atrix and play my movies from the hdd to the tv using the atrix?
Lol that's a bit much don't you think. I understand hdd to Atrix but hdd to Atrix to tv lol wouldn't it be easier to connect your pc to the tv or laptop/netbook to tv? But anyways lol I can only assume mini usb to micro usb would work but im not sure if the Atrix has the capability to read something via usb as all if features are for output not input. But I could be wrong guess it wouldn't hurt to look for a male male mini to micro cable
But thats just my 2 cents

That's the Problem, my pc is to far away from the tv and the netbook I have can't play 1080p and I can only connect it via VGA so I prefer connecting the atrix. I don't think it's so difficult, if the atrix recognizes the hdd then i would just connect the webtop or the hdmi mirror. I wanna use the atrix as a media center. If I could install boxer or xbmc on the atrix it would be perfect.
What you are looking for is usb OTG support. Not sure if the atrix has it or not

I dont get why its so "bit much"... for me theres no explanation a phone have support for 1080p and can't handle files bigger than 2gb (cause the fat32 support only)....
A external HD could provide the support for those files and you could be using that as a player with the Entertainment Center... unfortunatelly I dont have a HD Multimedia Dock with the USB ports... had anyone tried to plug an external HDD ?
if its possible it'd be kinda hot
spin off question,
can you plug an external hdd to the lapdock ?
if the answer is yes .... then it might be possible
It would be interesting, but you can get a box to play video from a usb drive for under $100 so once you factor in the time and trouble it is probably just cheaper to go buy a roku or wdtv or something like those.
looking it up you can get an external hdd to work with laptop or hd dock so you should be able to in theory too with just the phone, but with the fat32 limits of 4gb max per file, that kinda cuts down on the size of HD video you can play

Okay deep breath.
Short answer: Yes. Get your wallet ready.
Your asking several different questions.
Can I connect my ext usb?
This is an interesting question, i would like to know the answer as well. There is only one way to find out. Plug it up! You need a female usb to male micro usb to do this I imagine. At Google IO one of the announcements was that Ice Cream Sandwich will have the drivers or whatever needed to connect any usb built in.
Please nobody post or go start a new thread saying "when do we get ICSOMGWTFBBQ?".
Can i play movies from the Atrix to the tv?
Yes. Google TV. I heard Kevin Bacon loves it. Its very simple, whatever app you in: share< Google TV< enjoy
Can i play movies from the hdd to the tv?
Yes. You need a tv that has that feature, many do.
Alternatively, a dlna certified router w hdd capabilities will stream anything to anything else dlna certified. Your atrix is dlna, you have an app for that. Is your tv dlna? If not you can buy one, then use the Atrixs dlna to control the streaming of your hdd routers dlna to your dlna tv.
I want to connect my Nexus to my PS3 via HDMI cable so I can play "on the go". I have a HDMI to MicroHDMI adapter and a HDMI cable, Nexus isn't rooted yet.
So is this possible? it would be kind of nice to be able to do.
Thanks.

Unfortunately it's impossible to do a hardware based video input. Wireless however though I'm not sure.

I would do some searching around and see if there is anything PS3 related to display mirroring and then see if they use display mirroring standards that would recognize the Nexus 10 running something like AirDisplay.
It's definitely possible via PC or Mac to Android but my guess is anything that is available for PS3 is going to be something where you'll need to ability to run homebrew on PS3. Also, keep in mind, at least with my Mac to N10 experiences, I am only getting frame rates in the neighborhood of 5-10fps, so that's not going to cut it unless you've got a checkers or chess PS3 game.
Does your device has Dlna ? you may use it
im going to buy that phone but do it supposrt that? i already got hdmi and usb one from my N7000 note
wish it does(((
this phone got low storage and i really like this phone
sorry yes it doesnt have OTG support its horrible it would be awesome specially for this guy
im thinking if i get out of space
Yes it does have OTG but you need an external power.

thanks but i dont think i can find this in iran and i already got a cable for my note
anyway i dont really care about this
woops sorry! i tought its a cable is it safe:?
For HDMI out I don't think your cable will work. Majority of older phones use mhl for HDMI out but the n4 uses slimport and mhl cables will not work
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
1. Nexus 4 uses Slimport, not MHL. You'd need to buy a new cable anyway.
2. OTG only works with external power, and cannot work simultaneously with Slimport (No HDMI+OTG).
3. There is Miracast, but it sucks.
damn i bough cable wanted to experience playing games on hd tv but my phone bricked after that no chance let me see if that works whit htc one s (of my father)
anyway mine got a hdmi input and a power input and a micro-usb output
and slim port is it better? never heard about it

I just got the Rocket fish Miracast dongle from best buy. Works flawlessly. Streaming Netflix, HBO, CNN, etc. For gaming not useful, but for a media center experience, is perfect.

Since this is the Note 10.1 I'm just going to assume you CAN use a portable HDD on your Note 2, we can't on the 10.1....
You'd need an adaptor that connects the standard USB plug of the HDD into the Micro USB on the Note 2. You can pick 1 up for a few $$ on ebay, I paid $3 with delivery (I have an S3, soon to own S4).... Here's a link to mine, is a month old though - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/140755195879?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

yeah, after i posted that i realized i posted in the wrong forum. but i do have a usb OTG cable and the only problem is that there is only one usb port on my phone..so i cant plug the hard drive to it at the same time as having the MHL cable in it for the hdmi out..do you know what i mean? thats why i was wondering if someone knew a way around this with a good cord or adapter or something
I use my computer to act as a server for PLEX server, the run the PLEX app in android with the original galaxy tab docks. Works really well.

Does your TV support DLNA?
My Samsung does and anything I want to play from my tab is done wirelessly from the comfort of my couch.... Much better solution than the MHL adaptor...

It does not.. However I did get the wireless hub thing and I just didn't like how it performed. Good concept and aalmost there but the mhl just worked perfect. As where the all cast share hub glitched once in a while for me. Maybe your TV works better tho
- Plug your hard drive into a PC or laptop, share your movies folder on network.
- Install BSPlayer on your Note, open it, switch to LAN mode and you can play files from shared movies folder.
There's probably a solution similar to this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26657478
Check it out

Hey guys I have a Samsung TV with an USB connection behind of it but when I connect my gs4 to the TV it only charges, is there a way to read the files on my phone, music etc so it can be played on my TV through the USB?
make sure you have mtp enabled. other than that, if you have a compatible tv you should also be able to use screen mirroring to display pictures and videos and so on.
Wont an HDMI cable be good enough for the same?

After the 4.4.2 upgrade the mass storage access was limited by samsung.
Only an HDMI cable or syncing your phone with the tv via screen sharing can help.
You can buy a HDMI cable from ebay or amazon? That wont be difficult. They sell worldwide
Thank me if I helped
