No not rooted.. so there's no regular setting to change the sound? Only via root and getting in the folder path.

You still can receive calls in ringing mode, but the locking/unlocking sound will come again
Vibrate/donotdistrub = unlocking/locking sound disabled
Ringing mode = locking/unlocking sound is enabled

Yes, just go to sound settings (windows and not HTC) and in the first screen you have the option to disable that.

Do you mean having two separate lists of notification/ringtone sounds to choose from?
You can use a file explorer (Like ES File Explorer) to put media inside the storage\0\Ringtones and \Notifications folders respectively.
Or are you saying that your ringtone and notification sounds are identical?
Sorry I meant volumes. I would like to turn off notification volume and leave ring on.
Only can be done with a custom rom to my knowledge. That feature was implemented into the rom I'm using now.
What rom are you using?
Settings/Sound &notification/Default notification ringtone/None
I want the phone to ring I want notification off only.

Why not set up your priority mode under Do not disturb for only calls?

This is the same setting that I use on my 6P. My ringtone will go off when I get a phone but my notification is silent.

OnePlus 2 BROKEN ALERT SLIDER OOS 3.5.6
