I just purchased a LS997 with ZV8 software version.
I am assuming that the 'recowvery' technique that I have seen won't work, and that dirty Santa only works to ZV7.
I read a number of comments on the LAFSPLOIT thread that made me believe that a technique may be available, but that it won't be released till the next version of Android (Oreo) is released for LG V20, or 2020.
I'm actually probably going to be OK with waiting, but, I would like to have somebody state, unequivocally that it WILL be released.
Alternatively, I'm not opposed to returning the phone to the seller, and purchasing one that I know will work with TWRP and Root. What model presents the easiest root? I like the 910 and the 918, as they have FM radio, which would be a cool feature to have.
At any rate, what are your opinions regarding both keeping the ZV8, or returning it and buying a different one, as well as, if I buy one, which should I buy for easiest and stablelest root.
And what are your recommendations for ROMS too? I previously had a LG G3, with FULMICS 8 on it, and really liked that.
Thank you, in advance for bot your time reading this, and possibly for the time you spent answering my query as well!

I would say it's likely something will be released, but unequivocally? Unless you hear it from @runningnak3d, don't believe it.
If I were you, I would trade your LS997 for a H918 and root using lafsploit.
Good luck!

I had to go off the grid for a while due to a family emergency. Because of that emergency, I realized just how MUCH I used the ability to swap batteries. I refuse to buy a phone that is sealed.
The V20 is a little dated, but it is plenty speedy for what I do (if I want to game, I will buy a freaking 3DS or a Switch).
Now I am getting to the point. I have an H918, and as long as I have an H918, it will be rootable. Take that however you want

Brian,
I ended up returning the LS997 I had, because even though it was GSM unlockeď, I couldn't get MMS via SMS to work. It seemed like the MMS settings weren't being modified when I set up my APN for Virgin Mobile Canada. I am now hunting ebay for a H918.
I have been following your various threads here on XDA, and have to say that I appreciate the way you think through these things.
Also, I hope that your family emergency has resolved well.
Are the any specific 918s that I should avoid (ie: android or lg software updates, ARBs, etc...)
Thank you again.

As it happened, the LS997 wasn't sending MMS via SMS, and seemed to not let me update the MMS section of the APN settings. So I've sent it back. Am looking for a nice H918 right now.
So... thank you for your good advice!

Yea, it makes no difference what software is on the H918.
The LS997 should be avoided like the plague. It will be rootable, but it will probably never be worth a damn. Sprint had LG flip additional switches in that models CPU (qfuses), so hardware wise it is different enough that it just isn't fixable even when rooted. For example, cellular bands being disabled at the hardware level.
When the 700Mhz auction took place, Google was able to get some provisions into the agreement for that spectrum where carriers had to allow other devices on their network, and had to allow for unlocking. However, if the phone doesn't have the hardware needed to work on other carriers, well, then it is moot.
Sprint is taking advantage of that, and making sure their models only work on their network. They need to keep as many customers as they can.

Hi Brian,
I have an unlocked LSS97, I'm not sure how they unlocked it as I bought it from a mobile seller.
But unfortunately, I updated the software from ZV6 or ZV7 to ZVA (ARB=1) , and now I'm stuck with it. I'm still waiting for magical happens on my device, so that I can root it and flash a customer kernel and rom, since the stock rom is messy for me. It's very laggy even when I play game on low graphic setting (PUBG is an example), while other phone with lower GPU can play it smoothly.
But you said that "hardware wise it is different enough that it just isn't fixable even when rooted", does it mean that even I root the phone and install another kernel, issue related to GPU/ CPU is still there? And how about the network?
As of now, I can't find any other phone has the reasonable price than LG V20 (for Camera quality, dual screen and speaker).
Thank you!

If you follow his other threads you'd know he's been working on a root solution for the 997 so be patient otherwise if you want be risky he has a thread here seeking volunteers to test just know you due risk a possible brick. Your issues won't be solved just by rooting, those issues are typically kernel, hardware, and rom related.

I am talking about using it as a phone on any carrier besides Sprint. Yes, once rooted, you can turn it into a fine tablet -- it is phone calls that I was referring to.
If it works fine for you now making phone calls, then it will continue to do so. The lag can be fixed.

When I got my first phone (DROID RAZR M) I didn't even know what root was. After a year and my warranty's term, I found out and unlocked the bootloader just for fun. When I got my Verizon Note 4, I found out about KNOX and its hardware flag that can't be reversed. I had to wait 1.5 years for root on that anyway, but I'm keeping my Samsung tablet stock for the first year because of that flag.
My question: does LG have anything like Samsung KNOX? If I root right now, will I not just be able to flash back to stock and keep my warranty if needed? Or is LG nicer to power users?
Since I lose all data with a bootloader unlock, I'd rather do it sooner than later, but if I permanently trip some flag by doing so, I'd rather wait the year.
I've moved to T-Mobile, so I have the H918. I know I can root and I've seen the guide, but I don't know if I should root.
Up to you. Should wait for root and especially TWRP to mature. Limited right now.

It's actually really exciting to see all the development for this phone so far. I don't have much basis to judge from, but it's definitely a lot more than my Note.
So there's no hardware switch that'll be tripped? Is root reversible?
I rooted mine yesterday. When I turn it on it says that the bootloader is unlocked and I will receive that message everyday until I relock it. Im not new to rooting, and im also not a develepore, but I was checking out some of the adb and fastboot commands and I'm almost positive you could just simply reflash the stock rom and kernel, and from there use fastboot to relock the bootloader. I might try it tomorrow for you and let you know actually. Because this is the first time I have bought a brand new high end phone to actually experience the root slowly become available.
@Rbiter is correct though, other then simply just having supersu, and the simple root explorer stuff, nothing else has been upgraded really to work on nougat, and the current version of twrp is said to be sketchy when flashing stuff because it was just released not to long ago.

Well I guess Google does a pretty good job of backing up app data (which I didn't know they even did), so if I have to wipe, it probably won't be too bad.
If no one has heard of an LG KNOX equivalent, that gives me hope that there is none, and I'll be able to revert, which is definitely a plus for LG.
Yeah well this is my first LG, my last android was the AT&T Samsung galaxy 4, and then I switched to iphone for a little like a year or so, but I've heard nothing but great things about lg, except for there UI I think its called? There touchwiz or something of the sort is a little bloated' but hey that's why I am so excited for the custom roms and kernels! I truly wish I had on hands training with making one or the other. Ill try to un-root tomorrow after I over fill on turkey and let you know if I can get the boot up message away though and if I can I will compose how I did it.

Will Sprint LGG6 Ever Obtain Root or Unlocked Bootloader?

The million dollar question. I hope it happens but this is the first phone stock I've had that doesn't annoy me. I actually barely notice at all but I love to flash so maybe one day
My phone runs great no issues so it's not a big thing to have it rooted in that aspect, however. I like to keep NANDROID backups in case something happens, and the ability to backup applications the way I want is very important to me. Just using apps to backup everything is one thing, but if something occurs on a system level, you are generally screwed unless you have ROOT to be able to tinker and fix it yourself. I was able to fix countless phones on my own when the stores would want to wipe to factory reset or give me a refurbished. Screw that mess, give me freedom. Besides, it's illegal for them to deny you insurance claims based on ROOT. They legally have to prove that you damaged the phone by modifying the software. Battled and won twice after threats of a lawsuit. I have that part of the consumer rights saved in multiple places, just need to remember where so I can post it.
It all depends on whether or not the bootloader is locked, dm-verity, restrictions, etc. I hope it's not something like the Galaxy S7 with its Qualcomm Secure Boot.
The bootloader isn't even accessible from any user accessable means from what I've encountered, I can't seem to get in, I have "Enable OEM unlock" in settings, but it just seems that fastboot has been entirely stripped from this device... Very weird.

You can still anti bloat through android.. by disabling apps manually. But yeah I feel your pain.. I hate ads, I miss Xposed, I miss TWRP.. My note 5 i still keep around for that reason...
Truth is the LG G6 is a spectacular phone.. But the rooting community is getting smaller and smaller as android allows you to be more customizable and the average device life for people has gone from 2-3 years.. to every year now with leases and trade ins at carriers, and flagship phones coming out every 8-14 months.
WIth the G4 randomly dying, and the G5 having battery issues.. It took LG a while to get it right, and I love this phone more than the s8 and s8+ but LG jumped on the "apple/samsung" bandwagon by locking bootloaders... There are alot more people with Samsungs than LGs right now.. The reason behind all the companies going this route is because of Android Pay and proprietary security by phone manufacturers to push more sales through corporate and enterprise security..
At least LG is over time unlocking some variants ( albeit international) of the G6 its hopeful...
We used to have this luxury with HTC but they are still trying to stay afloat.
Those are just my observations... from working for an indirect dealer and rooting tons of phones for 9+ Years.
We just have to pray for an exploit- somewhere.. someone out there has turned it into an obsession... Lets just hope they emerge ....

Ditto on all that. For ads, I've used the all in one opt out which has eliminated lots of ads. Bloat is irritating, having to reset Google Voice after every update. Xposed was awesome. And I want all the Sprint badging and boot animation gone. Even temp root would make me happy.
Just everybody remember. Do not update. Usually root is achieved on lowest firmwares only in the last few history of lg series
Someone just messaged me this: Maybe some jtag process could work, or test point at qcom mode, dumping boot.img and rooting with magisk

Jeez. Luckly im in WETA Rom 10k update i dont think im planning to restore to factory just to move to 10p. I have the feeling LG will becoming like Samsung and the Knox system. Given the fact that they are already making the LG V30 to be more like the other flagships (no removable battery and all that) or we dont have to go that far, we can already see it on the g6. They are practically doing the same thing that samsung did. From Samsung galaxy s1 to s5 it was removable battery and there were some features that are not present anymore from the s6 to the present s version. Same thing with the Note series. Now if we take a look at LG, from LG G1 to G5 it was removable battery among other features that are not found any more from the g6 to probably the possible g version. Same thing happens with the V series. From V10 to V20 it is removable battery among other features that wont be found anymore on the V30. Rumors are there wont be a second screen on the V30 (and i thought that's one of the things that made the phone different from other flagships). But well... If they are making changes to external and some internal things to make it look like other flagships, why wouldnt they apply somethig like knox too new updates or for the brand new LG V30 about to come? . Lets see when the V30 actually comes out,

Did it work?
Hey guys... long time since i posted here. I still have my V20 H910 and i want to upgrade it to Oreo. ATT sim in phone will not show or allow any updates (says up to date) So i been trying to see what would the easiest way to flash H915 (All that ATT bloat gone) while still being able to use LTE? (Phone is now unlocked so i wont be on ATT)
I have been looking at all these guides but i seem to be getting mixed answers...
Can anyone point me down the right path? I saw somewhere that the H915 OREO KDZ is all you need while others say you need to root and patch the modem... So confused...
Appreciate it!
The only way is to install the 915 kdz with lgup and then root the phone with dirty Santa method. (install twrp, somewhere here in the forum) then you can flash the AT&T oreo.zip (also here in the forum somewhere) with twrp. You have to go with these two steps because there is no official oreo kdz provided by AT&T. Then your phone is absolutely 100% stock h910 oreo with no root and no failure message while booting . That the only way I know. I also did it. Goodluck mate! It's worth it. My LG V20 is the only phone I would say it was absolutely Worth it to upgrade to a newer android OS. I usually dont install updates on smartphones. My s9+ for example is still running with oreo thank God.

Thanks for the post - I was wondering, what would you say were the main benefits of moving up to Oreo? Up until I bought a few Li-Po batteries I figured I might as well give it a go as the battery life was SHOCKING anyway and I'd most likely end up selling the phone so I had nothing to lose, but now I've gone from 2-3.5 hrs SOT to 5.5-7.5 hrs and I'm really happy with the phone.
Like you I'm generally reluctant to upgrade phones as there do tend to be bugs that crop up and battery life can take a hit which, for me, negates the minimal gains I'd receive with the features of the new OS (in this case, the option for some camera mods in GCAM).
I've also started using a couple of App-only bank accounts so leaving my phone rooted isn't an option (I use them for travelling so I don't get charged for international exchange rates etc).

Oreo is speedier and supports LDAC. Actually that's it. At least for me. . GCam is also working with nougat btw.

Speedier? Is it noticeable in general use?
I just looked up LDAC - I tend to go for quantity over quality when it comes to listening to music on the move (I travel for 4-8 months a year so I try and download as much as I can to my device to negate the impact of poor wifi).
Yes, I have GCam on mine but it's the later stuff, the "night sight" that I'm interested in and it seems that only works on Oreo

Night sight is not good on the LG V20 oreo. My phone starts to lag and colors are not realistic. No generally you won't feel the difference. So if you are afraid of rooting it bc you are not a big tech guy. Just leave it and use nougat

Ah right, so night sight isn't working very well for you? Combine that with the speed increase not being overly dramatic and I think my decision is made - thanks for your input, much appreciated.
But no, it's not because "I'm not a big tech guy" - I've been using xda for years - my first smart phone was a used HTC HD2 that I switched from window to Android and then had it running natively from the sd card I've had 3 Samsung's that have all had a decent level of work done on them, the reason I'm reluctant to root the V20 is as I mentioned, I don't want to risk the banking apps being screwed up or the battery life taking a hit .
For once I might just resist the urge to tinker to possibly make a phone that works well, work a little better and then running into all kinds of annoying issues!

But like I said in my first post. If you install the official oreo att zip with twrp, the root will be undone and the Bootloader will be locked again! So banking apps should work again! My oreo is absolutely stock now.

Yes, I understood that, but there really isn't any reason for me to do that and upset how the V20 is working at the moment - I've NEVER had a process involving rooting a device go without a hitch (I must be super unlucky!) so I'll just leave well alone. If I had a second device I'd most definitely give it a go.

Hi, im thinking of doing this on my v20 that currently has LOS16 on it but the camera is not working and the battery life is horrendous. can you tell me if the hotspot works using this method, thats the main reason i changed from stock.
This is rather extreme to get a phone updated. If you are in the US, you just have to borrow or order an AT&T SIM to get your phone updated. This might even work outside US, but I don't know.

King Root? Don't make me laugh.
When's the last time some 1-click root like that ever worked? 5 or 6 years ago? And even then it was malware infested. Current versions certainly are. There's a reason to don't see that crap on XDA.
If you installed it on your V35 you need to completely reset your phone, really freshly reflash KDZ via Refurbish mode.

The shop in China where I got my V30+ sells V35 with root. They gave me my V30 rooted as well. I did the TWRP myself. The V35 is really cheap and was even considering one. They're like 140 USD for 98% new.
Are you saying there is no root or if the phone is rooted, it'll be malware infested?

I'm saying any branded 1-click solution like "King Root" don't work on any recent (past 4 or 5 years) LG phones and are malware infested. Why are they lying? Because they want you to install their adware/Malware -- and you still won't have root.
But you won't think to flash full KDZ via Refurbish mode to clean you phone.
That's the reason you see all those websites falsely telling you that you can root using the files they entice you to download and install.

Yes you can buy already-rooted V35 from China.
Any V30/V30+/V30S you can do yourself.

Use Telegram, you'll get a quicker response
Must use MP or Oct Pro for unlock Bootloader first before can root this device
I'd like to root my V35 ThinQ as well. I don't see a guide for it or anything... anyone know? Feel free to send me a PM too.
The best way to root your v35 is to ask someone in the Telegram forum to do it for you remotely. I recommend @vbenkovskyy. Your other option is to lay out some cash for an Octoplus setup.

Hi I'm looking for the service but seems like I can't send PM's for some reason. I would like this person mentioned or someone offering the service to help me please. I know there a small fee no problem. I'm planning on buying the phone in the next few days and would like to set everything up.
Where are the services at? Three people here wanting it and it's not free so what's going on?

You find someone in another country who remotes in to your computer and does some stuff, while your phone is connected. You pay them money.
In Discussion sections like this, XDA does not allow advertising or referrals in posts for paid services like that. They prefer devs create procedures and share so others not only can do it themselves but can improve on it. XDA allows donations to Devs, but they can't charge money in advance.
There are Advertising sections on XDA, but not here.
The other way is to buy already-rooted V35 from China. But it won't be new.
Hey @ChazzMatt,
Thank you for the response covering xda policies.
The situation with the v35 is tricky. It seems prospects for a do-it-yourself, free-of-charge unlock are fading with each passing day. LG and QC have foiled some skilled devs. The v35 is even immune to the recently reported CVE2019-2215 exploit, too. Thankfully, there are other means to free this awesome piece of hadware. Sadly, they are less than perfect. Have you unlocked your v35?

Thank you both for the replies. I absolutely understand and didn't mean to break any rules if I did and apologize. I completely understand and agree with the reasons behind it.

No, I haven't. My rooted stock firmware V30+ (with Magisk and Xposed mods) is still my daily phone and I have a backup V30+ also.
My V35 was bought from XDA member who had SIM card unlocked it and flashed it to NAO firmware. Mint condition. I've not updated to Pie yet.
I know there was V35 TWRP floating around somewhere but not sure it worked with Pie? If I have root, I would like TWRP.
The 2nd V35 I bought was brand new in box AT&T V35, for my sister. SIM card unlocked but still AT&T firmware, as she's AT&T customer and wants Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE. Finally gave it to her last weekend.
Do you have links to rooted v35s sold in China? Better yet, a working TWRP for V35? I have a rooted V35 with no TWRP and gives a system warning or error message upon boot.
Thanks
