How to Unlock Bootloader in Pixel/PixelXL - Google Pixel Guides, News, & Discussion

Folks, in case you didn't here, the code has been cracked. Someone got a log of the entire process this Smail guy has been using to unlock people's bootloaders for profit, and the process has been posted for all to see.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/how-to/how-to-unlock-bootloader-verizon-pixel-t3796030
I'm going to charge up my Pixel, make sure everything I need is backed up, and then get cracking!

Finally after waiting so long and did not want to try the sketchy alternative.

I'm thinking of purchasing an unlocked Google Pixel and wonder if the its bootloader is already unlocked or does the process listed above work for it as well? thank you.

Process worked just fine for me on a used VZW Pixel I picked up off of Amazon.

Purchased a Dev Edition that cannot be unlocked

Wow what a wonderful evening. Decided to unlock my bootloader on my VZW Dev Edition tonight. The Motorola Unlock website keeps telling me that my device is ineligible. I start a live chat and they tell me based on IMEI that my device does not qualify. Then they look up my order (from motorola.com) and they find out that my device IS a dev edition. He then tells me that my software has been modified. WTF! I just got this thing and haven't even unlocked the bootloader! Fastboot reports that it's locked! I am then told to contact them tomorrow to talk to Tier 2 Support. I am beyond angry at this moment...
Return it if you just got it and order another.

It takes a few days for moto to have your imei registered on their system, I think there might be 100 threads with the same issue, it just takes time.

I would suggest just calming down and go thorough with the tech support. While it's quite frustrating, it was just a bug in the system. Being frustrated and angry will only make you mad, and will not achive anything. When you talk to support, if you are mad they are much less likely to help you. Your problem will be resolved, but likely there is nobody here who can help. Just talk to Motorola and it will be fixed. Hardware defects happen all the time. It is just a software bug.
If you do get an unlock code, you could post it here and maybe we can find the formula to get the codes for unlockable imeis. Just a stab in the dark, but worth a try.

OK, well then I would tell Tech Level 2 to escalate it because it takes a few days for Tech Level 3 to call you back. You can try waiting a few days for the IMEI to make it into the unlock database, too, but I wouldn't wait more than 1 week from the ship date before pestering them to get on it.

Tech Level 2 just told me this exact thing I was surprised. She knew what she was talking about. She still escalated it to Level 3 for me however. Let's hope in a few days it will just be unlock able.
Just keep trying the unlock page. Its always been wonky. Many people tried over and over and then it just works. Be sure you're typing in your string properly....exactly the way it says to.

Wait. The X is tied to the account it was bought with? It's the first time I've heard of that and I just ordered mines through a friend's account because I don't own a credit card. Is this mentioned anywhere officially? Wow that sucks.

No its not linked to the same account. I bought mine on eBay and was able to unlock it. Just make sure that the account linked to your phone - the account shown where you have the quick toggles on the status bar is the one used when try to unlock it.
I had a few problems because I didn't realize that there were spaces when I pasted it into box. Just copy it into a word document and remove the spaces. Then paste into the section and the unlock request button will show at the very bottom of the page.

So it arrived! I'm now a very happy Moto X (Dev Edition) owner. And exactly as you said it's only linked to the account it's currently signed in with.

Is Warranty Usable After Bootloader Unlock?

Has anyone been able to use the warranty after unlocking the bootloader and relocking it? I ask cuz mine has the random camera buzzing/non-focusing problem and while it isn't annoying right now, it might get worse. I am unsure yet if the bootloader is required to be unlocked to gain any useful features or installing LineageOS

For exactly that reason I re-locked my bootloader on my A2017G device. This camera buzzing / vibrating noise is happening to a lot of people.
Just my opinion. There are no ROMs for me that justify a Bootloader unlock since 7.1.1 is stable, fast, reliable and has good Hi-Fi Audio qualities.
It is not an issue of bootloader unlock that causes this.
The camera rotor/OIS is faulty and will be needed to be sent in for repair.

Odd. So basically you contact them and ask for permission, or hope they're dumb and say you keep the warranty with the unlock and that's good enough?
Or did you unlock then relock, then try to use the warranty and they found out?

I "officially" unlocked mine through the ZTE website (when it was offered).. I was notified that my warranty was voided before pressing OK and they stated that anything that unlocked the bootloader voided the warranty. But, if you do it unofficially and re-lock it, or get it through Amazon or NewEgg - How are they going to know, or even know what to check (at Amazon or NewEgg)?

That is true... i'm just cautious because my phone isn't perfect, I have the common camera problem. If it was fine and then down the line it developed, then w/e. But right now I Should exchanged it, it's just not big enough of a problem where I need to. And tbh I feel like it would just develop again, since so many people have it. If I see a S7 drop down around 350 I am just gonna get this fixed and buy a S7.

Replacement from Verizon [unlockable]

After having issues with my camera and USB port, I have to get a replacement device from Verizon. I was pissed to have to do this because I used depixel8 to unlock my phone and the new one would be on 7.1.1 and locked. I booted up the device without the Sim card, just on the off chance I was on 7.1. It was on 7.1.1 and the oem unlock option was grayed out. After putting in my Verizon Sim, the option is now ungrayed and lets me flip it freely. Am I just lucky or what? I got the device through asurion and they said I would for sure get a Verizon variant
Yep, lucky ducky.
The weird thing is, the sim card is what flipped it from being grayed out to not. I threw a big fit with both Google and Verizon about not being able to use my phone for its designed purpose. What are the chances they changed it for me?
Probably slim to none, you got lucky like did the first time. the first return I got from Asurion was unlockable on 7.1.1, my replacement a month later due to a bad battery, was locked, but it was a BRAND NEW phone the second time, the first come in a Asurion box and was obviously a refurb, the second came in the retail box like if I just bought it from Verizon.
It's more the luck of the draw. I'm on my 4th pixel XL. One brand new one and 3 from warranty. #1 was locked and had Samsung memory. #2 unlocked with Toshiba memory. #3 locked with Samsung memory. #4 which is my current one is again unlocked again with Toshiba memory. Seems it's only the 32gb versions too. So they are definitely out there. I have yet to see this happen with the 128. I'm gonna take a stab in the dark and say your current unlockable one has Toshiba memory. Just a hunch. Seems to be the common denominator.
It's not.

I made a poll AWHILE ago trying to get somebody to show me a full unlocked Verizon variant (not depixeled) with Samsung memory. I have yet to see one. If anyone can show me one that's fine. I'm just saying so far every single fully unlocked Verizon pixel XL that I've seen or read about has had Toshiba memory. I'm not saying thats the reason they are unlockable...I'm saying that is the pattern I've seen. Ive been waiting to see one but have yet to.

If you search there was a memory thread a month or so ago and it has been dis proven. You'd have to search for it though. But think about your theory for a sec. If that were the case don't you think JCase would have said that at the outset? So basically what you are saying is that if you have Toshiba memory you can unlock the bootloader whereas if you have Samsung memory you cannot? Well anyway, as you were a part of that thread, here is the post I was referring to. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=71459372&postcount=53
Just one further thing. Are you saying that *all* Google Pixels have Toshiba memory? Simply because they are all unlockable. I still think it's the IMEI but no one has confirmed.

I do remember that thread. I was speaking strictly in terms of Verizon 32gb models. From my personal experience and that I have read. To my best recollection I haven't seen a Verizon/32/Samsung that was unlocked without using depixel. And I haven't seen a Verizon/32/Toshiba that needed depixel to unlock. These have all been verified as Verizon variants by cid. I also never meant to imply that it was because of the memory. Just that the pattern so far seems to be if you have a verizon/32/Toshiba it's garenteed to be unlockable...I'd actually like for that theory to be disproven. I'd also genuinely like to see a Verizon/32/Samsung that's unlockable as easily as the play store version. That's all I was saying. I have no experience with the 128...there seems to be no common ground with those.

I see. So you're basing it on empirical evidence which is all well and good and certainly interesting if it does fit a pattern. However, that really doesn't go to the method that Verizon uses to lock the bootloader option. Since the 128 does not fall in line with the locking/memory scenario then I can't see that the observation is anything other than that. Don't get me wrong, I find it intriguing but not of any great value for those that want to unlock the bl. Unless I'm missing something, which has been know to happen now and again.
As you witnessed in that thread there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason that is obvious. It was thought the CID, the Sim, IMEI etc. None of which panned out. I'm not looking to unlock my bootloader so this is all academic to me. But I certainly am curious.

This all definitely true. And that is all it is...just theory based on observation. And it doesn't really help to unlock the bootloader at all. But where it does/could come into play is if your looking to purchase say a used on on eBay. It's probable that you could find a cheap priced Verizon version. And say the seller doesn't realize the value of an unlockable one. Because they aren't part of the scene or for whatever reason. Then say because of the price it's a better deal than a play version IF it's unlockable. That's when you ask them to check memory manufacturer. Of course this would only work on 32gb versions. And there is always a slim chance that this cycle could be broken. I also understand that this is a very specific scenario so the theory has little usefulness. But still nonetheless it's does have it's place. And is of some worth. Until a fully locked verizon 32 Toshiba is reported.
Most people would never think this far into it. So I'm sure it might sound crazy. And I'll admit that it kinda does. I had to retype it like 3x because it sounded way too out there. Lol.
No it sounds just fine. Great post.

Bootloader Unlock on Pixel and Pixel XL "New Method" on all Android Versions
Hi Guys !
Smail From Morocco
I have found a way to get the Greyed out OEM UNLOCKING off and make it active. So we can enable it and unlock the bootloader easy !
This method has been TESTED on Both Pixel and Pixel XL. Also it doesn't matter what Android version You have
" 7.0 to 8.1.0 ".
The Reason why i will NOT release this publicly is GOOGLE. it looks like im having a COLD WAR with them ! because of some older reported BUGS but it seems like they don't care even when my bugs got patched.
Okay so here are some pictures about the status of the OEM UNLOCKING Before and After !
If you are not releasing it why did you even make a thread about it? Seems fake and for attention.
Bro, there's a bounty thread in the pixel 2 forum, there's something around $1,550, if you want money why don't you just share your results there? It looks like a scam.

I know this site is finicky for trying to get pics posted.

Just curious how you did it if he hasn't released the exploit? Did he use you as a tester?

Because it doesn't exist, which is most likely why his account is disabled.
Red flags:
- relatively new account
- no interest in collecting bounty for work
- managed to find test numerous devices to possibly brick in testing
- the people who vouch for him are also new members****
- why start NUMEROUS "I did XXX but can't post it because of XXX" threads... It has never stopped organizations in releasing the exploit. This isn't the first one of his. The other ones ended up being false with the threads locked.
If you're going to trust someone with that kind of security exploit on your device, be careful. In the past, there has been root programs that gathered device data. Sound like a scam to gather device data such as your IMEI.

Heyo. Just wanted to chime in here. I'm not a new member. I've been around here for a while (though not posting). I contacted Smail today to give this a shot. I was very skeptical, like everyone else. We chatted on FB for a bit, then I sent him my TeamViewer info, he connected, signed into his Flexihub account on my PC, then disconnected the TeamViewer. Continued via FB, he had me do a few things on the phone, and *poof* the option was enabled. I toggled it, rebooted to bootloader, was able to unlock with no issues. Holy crap it worked.
As of yet I haven't sent him any money, but I definitely plan on it. This guy is the real thing. The reason he was banned was mods accused him of selling services, even though he was only operating on donations. I get where they're coming from, but still.
He only uses TeamViewer to log into the Flexihub software (which is used for connecting to USB devices over a network).
I can also attest that his method works. He connected through teamviewer and logged into Flexihub and walked me through a factory reset and developer options and enabling usb debugging and soon i was able to toggle my oem unlock and was able to unlock my bootloader. I also must admit i was super skeptical and when it worked I almost fell out my chair because from my standpoint it was easy.
This is interesting... I've been unlocked since the depixel8 exploit but this could be big

I can also vouch for him. I've been around for awhile too, since the HTC Eris days, just don't post much. The experience here was the same for me. Took 15 min tops. I will also be donating something to him for his work, unreleased or not, it works.

this is just too funny
This is bull crap. I offered $20 bucks for video proof, not unlock service. And he rejected the offer.
I am so confused... Lol. Can mods please take this down?
Curious on how people found him on Facebook with just a first name
