How do I upgrade my new Moto G4 Play to latest Android? - Moto G4 Play Questions & Answers

I just bought a new Moto G4 Play and want to upgrade to the latest version. I tried and tried with no success. Here are the screen shots.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

What versiĆ³n you want exactly?
Why does not test a custom ROM, at these all worked except DRM.

I am a noob when it comes to Android. I want to install the latest stock version of Android that doesn't brick my phone.

Try flashing 'lineage' 'resurrection remix' 'pixel experience' or any other rom of your choice they all work flawlessly and to eliminate chances of bricking your device just take a backup before flashing any rom or mod

but moto camera picture qulity is good. Do you have any other camera same as moto cmc
but moto camera picture quality is good. Do you have any other camera same as moto camera for custom rom.

if you have an unofficial recovery you will never be able to update like this.
it is best to download the latest version HARPIA_NPI26.48-43_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml and install it using fastboot

Latest version for Moto G4 Play is 7.1.1 Pretty safe bet these phones will not get OREO or Pixel. You have to go install Lineage or some other custom rom assuming you can root the phone. If this a carrier phone like Verizon XT1609 then all bets are off, these phones cannot be rooted due to Verizon encrypting their MOTO G4 XT1609 bootloaders. At least the xt1609 is getting security updates on 7.1.1.

Not sure why you think you have to go to Nougat before flashing a 7.1 ROM. I have the XT1625 retail and I flashed the 7.1 XPerience ROM while on MM. I only did a factory reset before flashing then wiped Dalik/Cache after before booting. I manually installed all of my apps from Play Store and everything is running very smoothly with great performance and battery life.
I cannot speak for other 7.1 ROM's but this one is awesome!

Official Nougat Stock ROM for Moto G4 Plus

Hello guys,
I'm on soak test ROM NPJ25.75-2 currently.
I see that the official Nougat release for our XT1643 phone is way ahead of this soak test build. I couldn't find the latest image any where. Please let me know how I can update/flash the latest build.
P.S. Everything is smooth and fine with my soak test build except that every now and then, speaker stops working. I don't hear any sound during calls, or games or notification. Nothing. Then I have got to restart to get it working back. If anyone is facing similar problem and has found a solution, kindly let me know.
Thanks in advance!
There is no official release yet.
Why no update? Apparently motorola is same kind of abandonware now as most of the chinese bulk phones...
Here's what I found on this-
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3517059
For this, if you are on soak test ROM, you will have to downgrade to latest MM version. To downgrade, follow - http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...owngrade-to-marshmallow-nougat-t3515961/page5
Hope you guys find this helpful.

The downgrade of the bootloader to MM is possible only if he unlocks the bootloader. That means loosing the warranty.

Questions xt1265 Prime

Hi everyone,
I have the Moto G4 xt1625 Amazon Prime variation. Nevertheless, I took the regular steps to receive the unlock code on Motorola Website and they simply sent it to me. No idea if the fact that I live outside US and / or that my carrier is, obviously, from outside US had anything to do with it or if I was just lucky. I got the code, but I still never used it, which means I have the stock 6.0.1 android.
Now on to my questions:
1-My build number is MPJ24.139-64. What does that really means? I see people discussing this everywhere, some are 65. What difference does each build have?
2-I never heard of Firmware when speaking of mobiles. I always heard/changed the OS, but now you guys are changing firmware and OS. How do I know which firmware I have? How do I get the latest one?
3-Since I have the unlock code for the boot loader, does it virtually means I have a regular xt1625 Moto G4? I mean, as of now I still have the adds, but should I opt to unlock the boot loader and say flash CM 14.1 it would be the same as non Prime xt1625 or does the Prime version have other differences (build, firmware, etc)?
4-Can Moto G4 use the same ROMs as Moto G4 Plus? I've seen different answers regarding this matter. Would I have to flash base bands and/or soak test?
5-Is CM 14.1 (cm-14.1-20161225-NIGHTLY-athene.zip) the latest AOSP ROM for Moto G4?
Thank you in advance for your help and time! =]
Andre
Anyone? ^^
Maybe i can help you
1- This is like the version of firmware, or OS if you want to call like this way, (correct me if i am wrong)
2- Firware and OS are the same, i guess. Better call it ROM
3- Yes, the same. But i have the prime version locked so i cant tell you with 100% of security
4- Yes and no. the board is the same thing, you can install it but maybe you have problems like heat (not so much, of course)(because moto g+ have the cores boosted to 100%, and moto g non plus have 4 to 100% and 4 energy saver cores.)
5- NIGHTLY is a buggy software, this is not the software 100% tested. Maybe you have to wait a SNAPSHOT. This is more secure
Sorry for my English. I speak spanish better <3s
Thank you!!
What about the Indian 7.0 ROM? Can we install it without problems?

If you have unlocked the bootloader of course! Yes!
But maybe you want to make a backup of everything before!
I will recommend to you wait until the official software for your smartpone arrive..
For some reason Motorola has not released it, maybe the Indian 7.0 is buggy and they are just testing with india...
But you can try without problems!
PD: Remember when i said without problems, Problems may appear like overheating, WiFi problems, etc etc. But you can have a taste of nougat! Just search a little, i know people who have Nougat in theirs XT1625, and is working "well" (overheating againg)
try this

Hi,
I'm not a newbie here, but I think I can help u with some info since I have the same amz prime unlocked bootloader
Now on to my questions:
1-My build number is MPJ24.139-64. What does that really means? I see people discussing this everywhere, some are 65. What difference does each build have?
This is the latest build, that it's available for this phone version, this FW is the one that I had before I moved to RR.
2-I never heard of Firmware when speaking of mobiles. I always heard/changed the OS, but now you guys are changing firmware and OS. How do I know which firmware I have? How do I get the latest one?
FW es the specific version of a OS, the one that's meant to be on your phone
3-Since I have the unlock code for the boot loader, does it virtually means I have a regular xt1625 Moto G4? I mean, as of now I still have the adds, but should I opt to unlock the boot loader and say flash CM 14.1 it would be the same as non Prime xt1625 or does the Prime version have other differences (build, firmware, etc)?
Unlocking the bootloader means that it can support non official software, a custom recovery and after that you can root it, install a custom rom or mostly anything that you can think. But it still an specific branch oh the moto g4 the prime edition. So you can install Nougat from a TWRP, but not directly as an update or any other procedure
4-Can Moto G4 use the same ROMs as Moto G4 Plus? I've seen different answers regarding this matter. Would I have to flash base bands and/or soak test?
The moto G4 plus uses the same Hardware, custom roms can be used in any of those, not official roms
5-Is CM 14.1 (cm-14.1-20161225-NIGHTLY-athene.zip) the latest AOSP ROM for Moto G4?
CM is now gone, the new version of it would be Lineage OS, I personally use Resurrection Remix as my daily driver, it has TONS of customizations and it tells you whenever an update it's available.
Be carefeul with installing anything on your phone just have always a recovery back up in the micro sd and on a usb o pc available in case anything went wrong.
Hope this could help
Pardon my english.

Don't buy the Chinese Moto Z Play

Before buying the unlocked Moto Z Play make sure it is not the Chinese version. (Model XT1635-03)
I bought this model (64gb, dual sim) and haven't received a single update yet. (Still on July patch)
I contacted Motorola support and they told me the device had been rooted!! I never rooted or unlocked the bootloader on this phone, and bought it brand new and sealed.
Another user on XDA is reporting a similar problem. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=70856113&postcount=12
Rooting shouldn't stop you from getting OTA notifications, granted you might not be able to install it but you should get the notifications.
i read that XDA user's post. He says his Chinese Moto Z Play has an unlocked bootloader out of the box. Maybe that's why you don't get official OTA updates, but you may be able to flash new updates using ADB. That has been my experience with phones having unlocked bootloaders out of the box (like a developer edition Moto X).
Not sure where you bought it, but all phones in China are without google apps(google exit China in 2010), so if you received this phone with google app, I guess it is unlocked and could also been rooted.
And believe me you don't want a moto z without google apps, for me it'll be useless...
But at least you should able to flash firmware from other software channels e.g. reteu from the zip file.
The software of Chinese version is absolutely different and you must notice that at the first sight. It's not stock android UI but one from Lenovo and with no google apps in it.
If you don't like the software, you can easily flash it into retEU or Asia or any version you like just by the official RSD Lite. It will get OTA if you don't make any change to the system like root and xposed.

Hi. How is it possible to flash Chinese Moto Z into EU version? Any instructions? Will it certainly get OTAs?
There isn't a lot of problems with that, besides the unlocked bootloader, idk if that is relevant anyway, i buy a lot retail phones from hk and most of them came with unlocked bootloader and also rooted some of them, a Nexus 6, my new MZP, a Moto Droid Turbo, you should flash a retail version and that's all, and you can relock bootloader, but idk why would you do that, if you have any questions, just pm

Just unlock the bootloader and flash the official image with RSD lite or fastboot commands in the regular way, you can look for any instructions on RSD Lite for motorola phones. Then it will work as any version you flash on it, with dual SIM working as well, and the same Chinese LTE bands as before(US LTE bands not included). You'd better not flash fsg.mbn, it's something about signal. (or flash Chinese fsg back is OK).
You can get OTA only if you flash the full image and don't modify the system files. But flashing factory image is more recommended than OTA for its lower risk.
Thank you all. I just was concerned if Chinese Moto Z Play doesn't get OTAs like some guys supposed here and on other forums. It does, so no need to flash into EU version. I have just updated to Nougat on my brand new Chinese Moto Z Play. No worries about mods either.

Why does Motorola not officially post their stock roms?

Does anyone know why Motorola doesn't officially post their stock ROMs for people with non-developer edition devices? It would be so much easier for us if they post their roms like other companies do. Is there a valid reason why they don't? It's as if they're trying to make it difficult to work on your own device and be able to revert to their own official build of Android.
I downloaded -48 directly from them. Google Moto g4 stock firmware, it's readily available. Why not a more recent build? Now ya got me. If I knew how to extract a downloaded OTA I could post for 1625 non-prime. Anyone know?

My 1625 works with all G4 Plus ROMs, including the G4 Plus N OTAs posted on the G4 Plus forum.

The problem is Moto g4 play (latest) if i use an older build and update, it'll brick my device. That's why i feel Moto should supply all the latest roms

You're on the wrong forum
Regardless, I'm fairly sure pre-Lenovo Motorola did this, but Lenovo has really screwed things up software-wise.
Is there a factory rom yet for 7?
