Update S8 to Oreo? Yay or Nay - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

I've been holding off updating my S8 (G950F) to Oreo for a while now, and the many complaints I see on forums make me hesitant to do it. Still, at this stage I assume people have a good enough view of whether the update is overall worth it. What's your take?

25% Nay... I think I'll skip this upgrade for now.
Small sample size, I know.

What's more important Specs or On time Software updates?

I wanna buy the S6 or S6 EDGE. I currently have a Note Edge. But I was thinking the NExus line get's updated on time but they don't have that super mega specs that Samsung offers or other OEM's at the moment. So I wanna hear your opinion. Is't possible for Google to make a coding simpler and install-able accross platforms? Watching my Note Edge stuck on 5.0.1 and wishing for a miracle it will be updated someday to 5.1 lol.
definitely specs for me.
Specs all the way. I could care less about how long a manufacturer takes to release an update. That's what XDA is for. As long as the device can be rooted and the bootloader is unlocked/unlockable. Now if I'm on a carrier like AT&T or Verizon that locks there phones down like no tomorrow then I would have a harder time making that decision. But other than that my thinking is software can be replaced, the hardware can't.
I know, but having root unlocked boot loader doesn't always mean that new on time updates reaches our device's. We have to wait for devs to support it. Like my Note Edge....the XDA forum for it is kinda life less. Lol. I know my Note Edge is better in Specs than Nexus 6, but it doesn't have the latest software update/bug fixes, etc. It kinda sucks.
Software updates, for sure. Specs only get you so far until you're at the "My phone can do pretty much everything fine", which let's be honest here, is the point the Nexus 5 is still at. But take away any HINT of a software update, and you'll still be running Lollipop 2 years down the road, or have the same bugs you had at release. And you KNOW how buggy these are at release.
Specs. I can't think of an instance where the update made me think the phone was majorly improved by an update. And the OS version updates require me to factory reset the phone to get rid of performance issues

Will we get Oreo?

Does anyone know, or even think we will? What are your thoughts?
I wouldn't count on it. Samsung isn't the best at keeping their devices updated. If we are lucky enough to get it, it will certainly take a while. Knowing both Samsung and Verizon are slow about pushing their updates it will probably be MONTHS after other androids and even other S7s
I've seen news articles that feel we will get it. Usually Samsung will release two major OS upgrades per device. Nougat was the first. Oreo would be the second.
And not sure why you say they're not good at keeping their devices updated. I just today received the current security monthly patch and I've been getting them monthly. That's better than other devices I've had in the past (Motorola, LG).
BTW, this is my first Samsung smartphone. And so far, I've been very pleased with it. I used to root my devices in the past, but with this phone, I've had no reason to. For me, it performs well and I get sufficient battery life out of it.
I think yes.

Sure! this will be the second majority update base on source sammobile.com :highfive:

Yup..Not going Oreo

This whole forum is now just people complaining about how Oreo wrecked their S8's. I'm on TMO with an S8+ and I've wanted Oreo for some time but after seeing all this, I'm going to wait a few months and let the bugs get worked out. What a disaster.
Thanks for sharing. What are you having for diner tonight?
And oh, what is you favorite color?

Im on oreo fpr a while now, I don't really see any groundbracking positive changes, but I didn't have a single problem with the rom which i could blame completely on oreo. Of course some fc here and some compatibility issues there.
What I want to say is that I really do not have had any problems with oreo and at some of the problems the only thing possible is to blame the user.

Well, for a system that didn't introduce any big changes, at least they could've made sure that it doesn't bring new bugs. FC-s, lagging apps and other bugs shouldn't be happening on a system that's been trough such a extensive beta testing period, and it has even been paused for a week for being unstable.
I consider myself a very cautious and well trained user, and for me the oreo is just... unfinished. Still looks rushed even after so much waiting.
So I totally agree with OP. Don't update to oreo if U ask me Nougat has everything we need and doesn't come with bugs in the package.
I am on oreo on an S8+, and I have to say, that you are wildly overreacting. It has absolutely 0 issues for me. I don't know what you have read, but for the majority of people, it works perfectly. Samsung has not spent the last 6 months sitting around on their heels, they have been testing and validating TW on oreo.
Let me make it perfectly clear for you.
Number of FCs on Oreo: 0
Number of laggy apps on Oreo: 0
Number of crashes on Oreo: 0
Battery performance on Oreo > Battery performance on N
So I have to completely disagree with your overreaction.

Of course they are. It's a forum! Oreo has made my device feel like a new christmas present! I've had a couple small issues that I worked out but I would much rather be on Oreo. And also yes why did you need to announce that you aren't going to update?

I have updated 48 hours ago. Everything seemed fine at the beginning as I wasn't using the phone too much, then I started seeing the danger, crashes every now and then, lags all around, freezes.. what else? I know that 50% of these issues are related to some apps needing updates "maybe" like the WhatsApp attachment crash (https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/help/s8-oreo-update-whatsapp-stopped-crash-t3766697) which has been bugging me out a lot!
Other issues are Samsung's fault for sure, the device is kinda useless now if I compare it to how it has been on Nougat unfortunately.
How many of you that are having issues have done a factory reset and or wiped cache from within the bootloader?
No problems with Oreo so far. Everything works great!
Take note that:
a) I use Nova Prime launcher so i don't know if the stock Samsung launcher has problems.
b) I don't use the stock Samsung apps (dialer, sms, mail, notes and etc) except from Samsung browser which works great.
c) I did a factory reset after the installation of Oreo.

I really don't think it's this whole forum at all lol. People who complain are just louder than people who are content.
I got the update on my Verizon S8+ 5 days ago. I notice absolutely nothing negative about it. Battery still sucks, but no worse than Nougat. The phone feels much faster, picture and picture is awesome, the new emojis are great, using GIFS and Bitmoji from the Google keyboard now works, Google assistant now works while the screen is off, among a lot of other updates. I see zero reason to stick with Nougat.
I've cleared my cache, too, so maybe that helps any potential issues I'm unaware of. I'm considering a factory wipe to see if the battery does improve, but since it isn't worse from the update, I'm not in as much of a rush. I also always use Nova Launcher so idk if people have been having issues with Samsung's default home screen.

Maybe Oreo will come today/tomorrow as build G935VVRU4CRE5

Hopefully this is for real this time and not just a tease. The S7 Edge build should be be G935VVRU4CRE5.
Verizon (again) seems to indicate it will be Oreo: https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/samsung-galaxy-s7-edge-update/
I'm hoping it will be rootable (and stable in that rooted configuration) with the stock firmware, and that the root procedures come out soon.

NEVERMIND! Bunch of goof-off's at Verizon can't get anything right. The update was pulled. Maybe in a few more months once Android P is officially released. ??
Not sure what VZW is doing here... AA made this situation seem like they're just giving the finger to the update now, but as of 5 mins ago my S7E still shows the "You'll be one of the first to get it" screen on update check. While I'm not generally an optimist with relatively outdated devices and VZW updates, I think they made the promise (ie that screen everyone is getting) and they won't be able to pull out of it without starting fires.

Yeah I still fully believe it'll get the update, it's just a matter of when. Most likely within another month or so but perhaps longer. I'll be on new phones in August anyways though, from what I hear there's not anything too crazy about Oreo that'd I gotta have. Android P should be pretty nice though.

Ugh I hope it's not that long of a wait. I've seen a few people around even saying 6/8 (today/tomorrow depending on your sleep schedule) or next week - but maybe that's just wishful thinking.
I bought my S7E outright, but haven't had anything launch that's made me want to dump my pockets yet -- and now we're in the awkward phase between S9 and S10, and the Note 9 doesn't look too promising, and I feel like I should wait to get something with a 5G chipset anyways... But yeah, Android P should be the #beesknees.

LOL yeah Android P should be the bees knees! I do look forward to the major Android updates for the new api's, but usually with Samsung they already have features that vanilla Android gets later so that's why Oreo isn't as big of a deal for me. I do like project treble, but you gotta have a phone already pre loaded with it to even take advantage of it and then pray that the phone maker is looking to take advantage of it as well to get faster updates. But yeah the Note 9 seems like a decent amount of goodies will be held back for the S10. It'll still be a beast of a phone but makes me wanna hold out for the S10 even though I'll have upgrades available in August.

Sammobile wrote that article right before Verizon pulled the update again on Friday morning. Unfortunately they haven't updated that post to notify users that Verizon pulled the update after they wrote that article. So it makes it seem like sammobile knows it'll be released "soon". They really should update that post and notify users Verizon pulled the update after they had already written the article or just delete it until Verizon decides to actually release Oreo for the S7 and S7 Edge.
Just downloaded the Oreo update and it is installing now. The download failed 3 times before it finally successfully downloaded the file.
Mine download the first time
My phone would not ring or indicate a call was coming in. I removed the sim card, put it back in and now my phone rings ok. Must need to reset the sim card.
bad battery drainage after oreo update
My battery is draining badly since the oreo update on my Verizon sm-935V S7 Edge. I am seeing several people with the same issue. Is there any kind of fix for gbr 935V? My build is the G935VVRU4CRE5 OREO 8.0. What a disappointing piece of crap.

Same here - just sitting on my desk, no apps, solid wifi and has drained to 68% in about 3 hours...changed nothing since the "upgrade" to 8.0
PS also hate the stupid icon frames.
me as well.

I have had nothing but problems. apps stoppIng dead in their tracks and battery drain. Getting worse. also in the last few days I've used over 40G of data and no proof of anything using it apps or otherwise. Good thing I'm unlimited I guess. even though I'm sure Verizon will throttle it soon.

Android Pie

Hello everyone, i just wanted to ask is S7 edge getting 9.0 update? If not will it be possible to port 9.0 from Note FE cause its almost the same as S7 edge? Tanks ?
Unfortunately, S7 and S7 Edge are not getting Android Pie ? .. and bout porting 9.0, I really cant tell. It's not my domain of expertise, but I hope someone start doing it already cuz porting is all what xda developers bout.

Wow, well that's odd
I really doubt that there will be a official 9.0 "Pie" release for the/my/our beloved S7 Edge. If for no other reason than this insane policy of 2 major android updates per device. Plus, Samsung- with their lackluster sales/support for flagship devices- wants to sell new phones to boost profits- which, for flagship devices- has suffered big time. They are not too concerned about retaining existing customers.
One can only hope/pray that some developers will be able to port Pie for us. One thing is for sure, based on the rumors of what the S10 will offer- and COST-, I just might keep my S7E a lot longer, even if I only get to keep rooted Oreo.
Wait and see...
It's common for the mobile manufacturers to test the new firmware on some of the older devices. This does not guarantee that it will see the light of day.
what u mean rooted oreo i got oreo on my s7e will my phonevbe ok n just stay on oreo or will i have issues?
