Will we get Oreo? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions & Answers

Does anyone know, or even think we will? What are your thoughts?

I wouldn't count on it. Samsung isn't the best at keeping their devices updated. If we are lucky enough to get it, it will certainly take a while. Knowing both Samsung and Verizon are slow about pushing their updates it will probably be MONTHS after other androids and even other S7s

I've seen news articles that feel we will get it. Usually Samsung will release two major OS upgrades per device. Nougat was the first. Oreo would be the second.
And not sure why you say they're not good at keeping their devices updated. I just today received the current security monthly patch and I've been getting them monthly. That's better than other devices I've had in the past (Motorola, LG).
BTW, this is my first Samsung smartphone. And so far, I've been very pleased with it. I used to root my devices in the past, but with this phone, I've had no reason to. For me, it performs well and I get sufficient battery life out of it.

I think yes.

When do you think we will get updated to M?

How long do you think we will need to wait?
Next year probably knowing Samsung. They support their flagships for about 6 months before they're completely forgotten about.
They're still rolling out 5.0 to some of their devices. The problem with Samsung is just last year they released 56 different mobile/tablet devices - How do you continue support for all of those?
It's the one thing I love about Apple - One device for the whole world, one device to update, nice and simple!
Agreed, and I am aware of their track record. I have seen a new urgency to get updates done quickly however, and given this will be their newest device I am hoping the ups are will drop quickly.

Galaxy Tab S2 (2015&2016) - Official Android 8.0 Oreo Update News

Hey guys!
I don't know if you already heard it but the Galaxy S6 lineup will probably receive Android 8.0. Many Samsung employees confirmed that and there is already a leaked list of devices which will get the update. Today I noticed that not only the S6 was mentioned on that list... the Galaxy Tab S2 will probably receive the update as well! In my opinion it is really great to see that the first premium devices from Samsung will get another update

I wouldn't get too excited. That list is just devices that could potentially run Oreo. It does not mean they will actually get the update. There's a good few on there that I'm certain wont. Would you really think the Tab series would get Oreo when they didn't even get nougat or Marshmallow?

Maybe we will get Samsung Experience 9.0 with the update. It would be very great to get some S8/S9 UI feauters
If Samsung's track record holds of two major version updates per flagship device, the 2016 Tab S2 should get Oreo. The 2015 may or may not - I guess it depends on whether Sammy is feeling generous.
I'm not sure who would hope their device doesn't get the update? While it's possible Samsung could pull an Apple stunt and kill performance with an Oreo update, that generally hasn't been an issue. In reality, it will just be security patches and support for newer apps. The days of new Android versions bringing sea changes of improvements appear to be in the past.

I agree Samsung seem to give 2 major updates to their flagships and higher spec devices.
The S2(2) should get Oreo. I'd say unlikely the S2(1)will see it.
As a 2015 owner, all I want for the last major update is a stable build without any major bugs. From then on, I'd just like the same build with the security updates. The current Nougat is pretty solid but the screen brightness does keep going up and down on some occasions.
i would love to see something for the 819N, i mean there isn't even any custom roms for that version of the tablet, i hope at least samsung goes oreo for it.

Probably 2016 model can hope for it because it has been shipped with 6.0 and also is not sure...but 2015 model should kill the idea because has been shipped with 5.0.1. Even if we could run oreo Sammy will never give a third major update to a 2015 device, even if the only difference between 2015 and 2016 is the CPU (correct me if i'm wrong)
I think it's crazy how Samsumg abandons its own products. I can understand their budget devices getting updates, but this is their only tablet line. Not to mention they were selling these for $400+ a pop (i got mine out of a pricing error for $200 though).
Just shows you that iPad should be the only tablet product to purchase from here on out... I think the last year and a couple months I've owned this it's been updated a whopping 3 times! Never again will I buy Samsung.

Maybe Oreo will come today/tomorrow as build G935VVRU4CRE5

Hopefully this is for real this time and not just a tease. The S7 Edge build should be be G935VVRU4CRE5.
Verizon (again) seems to indicate it will be Oreo: https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/samsung-galaxy-s7-edge-update/
I'm hoping it will be rootable (and stable in that rooted configuration) with the stock firmware, and that the root procedures come out soon.

NEVERMIND! Bunch of goof-off's at Verizon can't get anything right. The update was pulled. Maybe in a few more months once Android P is officially released. ??
Not sure what VZW is doing here... AA made this situation seem like they're just giving the finger to the update now, but as of 5 mins ago my S7E still shows the "You'll be one of the first to get it" screen on update check. While I'm not generally an optimist with relatively outdated devices and VZW updates, I think they made the promise (ie that screen everyone is getting) and they won't be able to pull out of it without starting fires.

Yeah I still fully believe it'll get the update, it's just a matter of when. Most likely within another month or so but perhaps longer. I'll be on new phones in August anyways though, from what I hear there's not anything too crazy about Oreo that'd I gotta have. Android P should be pretty nice though.

Ugh I hope it's not that long of a wait. I've seen a few people around even saying 6/8 (today/tomorrow depending on your sleep schedule) or next week - but maybe that's just wishful thinking.
I bought my S7E outright, but haven't had anything launch that's made me want to dump my pockets yet -- and now we're in the awkward phase between S9 and S10, and the Note 9 doesn't look too promising, and I feel like I should wait to get something with a 5G chipset anyways... But yeah, Android P should be the #beesknees.

LOL yeah Android P should be the bees knees! I do look forward to the major Android updates for the new api's, but usually with Samsung they already have features that vanilla Android gets later so that's why Oreo isn't as big of a deal for me. I do like project treble, but you gotta have a phone already pre loaded with it to even take advantage of it and then pray that the phone maker is looking to take advantage of it as well to get faster updates. But yeah the Note 9 seems like a decent amount of goodies will be held back for the S10. It'll still be a beast of a phone but makes me wanna hold out for the S10 even though I'll have upgrades available in August.

Sammobile wrote that article right before Verizon pulled the update again on Friday morning. Unfortunately they haven't updated that post to notify users that Verizon pulled the update after they wrote that article. So it makes it seem like sammobile knows it'll be released "soon". They really should update that post and notify users Verizon pulled the update after they had already written the article or just delete it until Verizon decides to actually release Oreo for the S7 and S7 Edge.
Just downloaded the Oreo update and it is installing now. The download failed 3 times before it finally successfully downloaded the file.
Mine download the first time
My phone would not ring or indicate a call was coming in. I removed the sim card, put it back in and now my phone rings ok. Must need to reset the sim card.
bad battery drainage after oreo update
My battery is draining badly since the oreo update on my Verizon sm-935V S7 Edge. I am seeing several people with the same issue. Is there any kind of fix for gbr 935V? My build is the G935VVRU4CRE5 OREO 8.0. What a disappointing piece of crap.

Same here - just sitting on my desk, no apps, solid wifi and has drained to 68% in about 3 hours...changed nothing since the "upgrade" to 8.0
PS also hate the stupid icon frames.

I have had nothing but problems. apps stoppIng dead in their tracks and battery drain. Getting worse. also in the last few days I've used over 40G of data and no proof of anything using it apps or otherwise. Good thing I'm unlimited I guess. even though I'm sure Verizon will throttle it soon.

It could be that Motorola are working on the Oreo update for our devices, I imagine we're not the highest priority at the moment, since we already had our major update. Still, let's see what happens.

NO! We didn't. When I bought the device, it was mentioned in all promotional material that we will get guaranteed Android N and O updates. Though, there was no time frame mentioned, but this is ridiculous that we have to wait so long. I'm never gonna recommend a Moto device again, just because of updates, which was the USP for recommendations.
I am not sure when will Motorola ever speak about G4(+) as in their Oreo upgrade plan this device was missing at first. Then on reddit people made posts with promo materials showing promises and they just included the device in their list I believe several months ago. So, they never intended to upgrade it, and who knows they ever will.

The major update was nougat that this device received already(echo92 is correct). At the beginning it was shipped with marshmallow. Seems you bought the device while those promo materials were discussed around the world

This would be correct for any vendor that promises one major upgrade and had a history of doing so. But, Motorola was choice of many due to consistent security updates and at least 2 major upgrades, and not just that, they actually said that. So, you are right they gave one major update out of promised 2, but I didn't mean that I bought the device with Nougat.
My purchase date was 20-May-2016 which was the Amazon-exclusive launch date in India and got it in my hand on 21-May-2016. I have the device with one of my family members now as I upgraded to a different device.
Luring the updates and making customer buy due to that reason and denying or delaying later is not done. We don't have very strict consumer protection law here, otherwise there definitely would have been an update

Nokia all the way. Really, they have very good phones, decently priced with the majority of them running Android One. If my G4 Plus were to die now, I'd probably get a Nokia 7 Plus or a 6.1.

Nokia do seem to be a good choice, one of the things I'm not keen on is their lack of an official bootloader unlock program. Granted, you can pay for an unlock key (to whom?) and the increasing security measures (e.g. Safetynet) are making unlocking more of a hassle, just at the moment there's not much support for custom ROMs or TWRP.

Oxygen OS updates

When I was considering buying a Oneplus 1+8 pro I was being told by YT influencers and media that if you like clean and good OS with frequent updates and longterm support that Oneplus is the way to go.
It has now been over 4 months since last update and AFAIK nothing is happening on that matter.
We have OB2 which is nowhere near being ready for daily driver. Even when it is released as stable I bet it will be even worse as what the current 10 is.
We have updates coming out for the 7 and Nord series but nothing for the 8.
If somebody wants to claim that there is nothing to update I will call them idiots. This OS is nowhere near to the level of the OSs I had on my previous Samsung and Apple phones. There are all sorts of issues which are not being addresed by Oneplus.
Am I the only one having a problem with that fact?

1st - OB2 is like 3 weeks old, not 4 months. Hope you don't expect Stable A11 days after Pixels.
2nd - if you believe YT influencers, then I wish you good luck.
3rd - security updates are spot on.
4th - I use OB2 since the release day and have no complains. Eventually high battery use of Google Play Store app. Nothing crazy.
]1st - I was referring to stable A10. Latest update was released Aug 15, 2020. So not 4 months but 2. Still long time ago.
2nd -I cannot establish my own opinion since I have no chance to see these phones in person before purchase. Also this is nowadays normal and best way to buy stuff.
3rd - No they are not. The latest stable version is on August security patch. We are now in the middle of October. Even Samsung is pushing that as we speak.
4th - I use my phone for work so no I will not run beta SW on it.
Samsung are better with security updates, but oneplus will get android 11 first
No complaints with 8 Pro updates this year...

First off. Don't listen to YouTubers, and influencers, I think I would poke someone in the eye of they told me that's what they did for a job..
OnePlus absolutely smashes the other OEM's in regards to updates, Huawei, old HTC, Sammy, LG, Sony, sorry but none of them come close .
Pixel? Sure that's the source, but the shortcomings Vs pixel on the OnePlus, it makes up for with a bigger battery and IMHO a better Dev community and a course matched beta program.
You can't go wrong with OnePlus tbh.

Based on this report your claims have no foundations to stand on. Oneplus released 12 updates since the phone launched but most of them were minor updates and fixed nothing. Only one major update. I would not classify that in the "smashing other OEMs" category.

12 updates in 6 months is pretty good stats. Small or not. I have had all other brands and came back to OnePlus (I had the 6T as well). Even stock, it is a great OS. But, everyone has their own opinion.

No foundations? Perhaps the fact that OnePlus actually release stable OS' in a timely manner with very little need to change anything, OOS is an extremely stable and fast skin for Android..very light too.
Security update comes out OnePlus gets it... new OS in development, we get it early.....to what OEM are you referring?
Huawei does not offer this speed nor does it offer a beta program like this, Samsung didn't either if memory serves, Sony was pitiful and splintered (as was Huawei (due to device variants /regions) LG (do people still buy these types of phones? Motorola (budget phone not in the same league)
I've had a lot of phones so I have some experience here, this is a public forum, you can take my advice or you can move on, what I won't do is try to convince you against something you appear to have an agenda towards, personally I can say without prejudice or bias that the OnePlus 8 pro is the best phone on the market right now, very few people would argue that point.
Updates are on point, end of story.
A good OEM won't release huge updates because they have nothing to fix, meaning it was done right the first time, a bad OEM will do the opposite, like Samsung releasing a £1500 phone with a camera that won't focus.
Oh wow just saw your end of post, you compared an android device to apple.
Oh dear.
Tell me can you Bluetooth files yet? Is apple still crippling it's OS due to an "update" ?
Don't compare any android device to apple you'll get very little sympathy here in that regard.
Samsung? Really? Exynos processor in the non US variants? And you're supporting them? Anyone who likes android or has an ounce of respect for themselves would boycott them and sign the petition to get Snapdragon in all their phones..
I wouldn't swap my OnePlus if you offered me both the iPhone XS and the ultra.
Lastly I and the absolute vast majority of people have not and do not have any issue with our OnePlus phone.
Fastest phone out not.
Battery life? I get 10 hours SOT consistently, even when gaming.
What issues are you referring to? If it's green tint (see above)
