OEM skin/software - OnePlus 6 Real Life Review

Are you comfortable in your own skin? Is your phone comfortable in its skin? Rate this thread to express how you deem the skin on the OnePlus 6. A higher rating indicates that you love it: it adds just the right amount of features, it's visually pleasing, and overall it's additive to the experience. If this is a Nexus phone (you didn't think we hand-wrote all of these prompts, did you?) then use this rating to indicate how the latest version of Android looks to you.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

I find the OS overall to be buggy, outdated, featureless and overall full of patches and fixes that is now the OS that cracker jack built.
At this price point a far better OS is to be expected

Have you tried to update your device to the latest version and then do a factory reset?

What are you babbling about? I have a OnePlus 6 already, this is posted to that thread. Reading along with reading comprehension works wonders before posting at a poor attempt at snark. No bugger off and wake up to yourself.

Yes, already had to do that because of not only regular issues that still persist but woke up one day where I kept getting warnings my entire storage was used even though I only have used about 5gb out of the 50+gb available. I've seen some postings of others having the same issue.
I still have issues with networking where it doesn't want to reconnect to the network after losing signal and I have to use the airplane mode on/off. It's a known issue to them and they told me they're still working on a fix even though they supposedly pushed one out in the last update.
I've in essence told them already they need to start from scratch with a new OS instead of patching this to work on one model to another which it clearly doesn't. I mean it doesn't even have a slider just for notifications volume, they told me it takes time to code for it. I said people have been complaining for one for 3 years, how much time does one need.
I feel this phone is all hype, great specs but no substance behind the hardware.

I have personally never had this problem and prefer OOS to Lineage, touchwiz and any aosp Rom. It is also very good with battery once you have the right configurations and if you turn down the time it takes for animations to 0.5 or 0.25x it just shows how extremely fast and snappy the device and how good in my opinion OOS is.

You should count yourself lucky, you haven't had the network problem like the rest of us because it is quite annoying.
I have no issue with the battery life, but then I don't clutter my phone with nonsensical apps either. I have no need to turn down the animations either, I have no complaints about it being "snappy and fast" but being snappy and fast has no bearing on the other issues within the software. You can make any phone snappy and fast, but the coding can still be a mess. And the phone does have a latency issue which is apparently even more noticeable in the 3rd beta as there were people complaining about it.
Touchwiz is just a joke and should not be used as a comparison to anything. To be honest I would rather go back to Asus and deal with their limited updates then this mess. No OS is without some problems somewhere, but at least Asus works correctly 90% of the time and is updated to 2018 instead of being an OS from 2012.

Or you can just do a fresh install of OOS 5.1.11 and unlock it and install xxxnolimits and radioactive kernel like me or flash lineage 15.1.

I've already done that, why do you keep telling me to do things like it's my first device?
I don't root and flash anymore, I want something that works when I hand over my money. I'm not loyal to any brand or a fanboy to any brand and if I see something I don't like I make it known, if it doesn't get fixed I walk with my money. The fact that every solution is install a 3rd party app or root your phone and install this or that is not a solution to the underlying problem. OP better step up or they'll go the way of the Blu phones, all hype in the beginning now they're not even a blip on the radar.
If having to flash this or that, install this and that works for you on this device, that's great it however doesn't for me. But that just tells me because you've had to do all that, the OS isn't really up to par. Good luck with your phone and I'm happy you're happy with it.

Seems like you just got unlucky
I have the 128gb 8gb variant and I think you mentioned you had the 64gb variant. I was just trying to help sorry I couldn't.

Although I root my devices day one and have no issues with my OP6 I totally agree with you.
I maintained buggy devices before. Customer supports standard answer is factory reset. Community answer is root and flash or install this or that. Out of the box many devices from different brands have lots of issues where I wonder how this could pass quality check. Loosing signal/ reconnecting issues for mobile and wifi, buggy silent mode, any pre installed (mostly the launcher) force closes, etc.
People keep asking me why I root my devices, what the benefit is. While some thinks are a real benefit (twrp, titanium backup, enhanced settings, ...) other mods are just there to overdraw the main rom bugs. And they become more.

Maybe because the problems you are mentioning are issues people that don't know what they are doing tend to have and the people that root and start installing stuff that can't read instructions properly. Honestly the problems you mention are rookie issues and or Fan Boys of other phones (Iphone anyone) and troll.
The OS is just fine. The OP5 and now the OP6 are the first android phones I've never had to install a custom ROM for. I root for TiBu and to install root apps. I also install a Kernel to increase vibration sensitivity and max volume levels. Buttery smooth, insane battery life and no complaints.

I'm running the OP6 64gb as well, and I've never had issues with the OS. It's pretty bare-bones (like it should be), since it opens the possibility to update to new OS updates extremely fast.
I've had high-end Samsung, LG, Sony, HTC, Xiaomi and Huawei, and so far OnePlus have been AMAZINGLY quick on updates and fixes for issues at hand.

The best I have seen so far really enjoy the dark mode option(both on my old oneplus 5)
The audio tuner is amazing with my headphones (classic with Sennheiser hd25)
feel a little smoother than my Oneplus 5 with Oxygen 9.03 but I its maybe a placebo
For improve I want more option for the file manager (smb 3 compatibility pls)
More widget out of the box weather and location especially
and change the design of the weather app
its look a little outdated

5.1 Update coming early 2015

Just read on android pit.com
Our source has informed us that Android 5.1 will be launched by the end of February 2015, and a second, completely separate source that is also privy to important information regarding Android updates, confirmed it. Not only that, this is allegedly a rather large update with many interesting new features! See the changelog below:
Silent mode added after missing on Android 5.0
General improvements in system stability
Improved RAM management
Fixes for sudden app closures
Improved battery management
Excessive consumption of network devices when used Wi-Fi fixed
Issues with wireless connections fixed
Problems with Okay Google function solved
Notifications problems solved
Some sound problems experience by certain devices fixed
Other improvements and changes
Changes in the Material Design color palette (after users complaints, possibly for a higher version though)
So far there is no information about functions that it might bring, but we'll be sure to report on those as soon as we hear it.
Android 5.0 was a fantastic update, however it did bring its own list of issues, which we covered how to fix in our Android 5.0 Lollipop common problems and solutions article. That being said, Android 5.1 could get rid of many of the problems we saw here!
Android 6.0: let’s invent the ultimate Android OS
Android 5.0.1 Lollipop update: when will my device get it?
I wonder if that means ok Google will finally work with all aosp roms. I've tried the suggested fixes and the best I've been able to get is it works on any screen but not with screen off. Kind of defeats the purpose when you are trying to use it hands free while driving.
i'll believe it when i see it from Google...

The only ROM I've seen that OK google works with screen off is sinless ROM, because its based off of googles IMG rather than aosp. Pretty solid ROM, you should give it a shot.
I'm really pumped for the Other improvements and changes. I've been wanting this feature for a long time.

As far as I can tell and this being my first Nexus device, development is rather slow. Also to me the whole lollipop android seems very unpolished and lack luster. So many fixed things that cannot be changed without a lot of people in this community doing a lot of work. Simple things like hiding navigation bar and being able to select what one wants on the navigation bar are sorely missing and should be standard on Android. No notification LED, what the ****, even my HTC HD2 had that working and available, in fact that phone was one of the easiest and most customizable phones I've ever owned.
There are so many seemingly standard and simple things that seem to have been left out and on top of that locking the bootloader from the get go just does not scream please feel free to customize me. I thought the Nexus would be a device that, like android would support open source and many wonderful improvements by community users. I don't know, but if I was not told this is a Nexus device, I would swear it was a branded phone of a much less expensive manufacturer. I will keep it until the next update, but if they don't add even the most basic features, and some open source customizations ability to it, I guess I will have to leave the fold. Yes, this phone did not make me a fan of any kind. Nice specs, but not utilized to their full potential and one of the worst experiences out of the box. Makes me appreciate the polish of Samsung, HTC, LG and others.

Slow amigo? We got root and ROMs and twrp all in less time than Samsung devices simply to get root.
Polish takes more than 1 month since hardware release. This device is brand spanking new on an entirely new and unfamiliar code base.
I had a note 4. It's a great phone feature wise however performance wise the nexus blows it out of the ball park. No lag whatsoever, i do hear the odd crackle from the speaker when starting it up and when the unlock/lock sound plays but that's it. Hope the sound improvements mentioned in the change log will address that. Looking forward to it.

sweet that means I'll get 5.1 on my nexus 6 same time as I get 5.01
I hope this is true.
I'm hoping that the color palate change will add a darker material design. I always like the holo dark, and switching to the high contrast material design was pretty big. I like in google keyboard you can change it to dark material in the settings, but I'd like to see that on a stock ROM. (I'm waiting for a big ROM like CM, PA, Slim, or Omni to release stable, because I love the features, but I require ota )

How is his post a fanboy post? It's literally spot on. The Nexus 6 is BRAND NEW. I mean, the phone went on pre-order late October and very few have been able to get their hands on one because of it's unavailability. Despite that, we have plenty of action going on in development. It seems like you haven't bothered to check.
Also, reading your posts lately on the forum, it seems like you 'ignore' everyone that disagrees with you. Then you call others 'fanboys'.
Anyone see a problem with that?
I would love to see official supported notification LED or improved ambient display. So I wanna have a recognizable notification method of i don´t stare permanently on my mobile and don´t have to pick up.

Seems really odd that Google releases a dark version of android back in version 4.0 but uses LCDs on their reference phones, but now they release 5.0 with bright colors and use AMOLED. It seems it should have been reversed.

Is the 6P a disappointment?

So as a real android enthusiast I bought a 6P 2 weeks back and I had really high hopes since everybody seems so stoked about this device.
After unboxing I was really impressed about the buildqualitiy and the quality of the components used to make this device, but since the first boot I'm really let down by the software experience.
I come from a OnePlus X which runs a custom rom (Resurrection Remix), the CPU governor is set to performance and all animations are speeded up by a factor of 0.75x. And I must say I have the feeling the OPX feels much smoother. At first I thought is was because of the animation speed, but I notice a lot of framedrops when animating, the RAM management seems of center (sometimes when I reopen the third app in the recents he has to reload the entire app!) and batterylife isn't that well either.
At first I thought the bad batterylife was the fault of an app I had written which wasn't optimized but nothing changed after uninstalling it.
I've done a reset of the device and have doubted to flash a custom kernel and set the governor to performance but I don't think you should need to change the software of a $600 phone for decent performance in 2016...
Am I the only one noticing this? I have the feeling that the software isn't optimized and it bugs me... If anyone can give me some tips that should help me, please do.
FYI: my device has about 3hours max of screen-on, the wifi, data and GPS are always turned on, same for bluetooth since it's connected with my watch and I have a mixed use throughout the day (facebook, chat, browsing, gaming,...)

How does this help him at all?
To the OP, it's ok to put custom software on your OPX to improve performance but not your 6P? Why?
I dunno mate, i think its just you. For me 6p is snappiest and fastest device i have ever owned. Before snapdragon 820devices started coming it was regarded as smoothest and fastest device by all review sites also. Even now, its still up there with the best. And battery life on oneplus x is mediocre, 6p is waay better, go look at gsmarena.com battery ratings. 3 hours of sot time with wifi, data, gps, bt turned on all the time and heavy usage is really not that bad. Im getting about 5h of sot, but my usage is not so heavy.
Because I have not noticed any of what OP has experienced. So my answer to his question was an unqualified NO!
And besides, he doesn't need help. He needs to stop posting useless posts.

I'll surely try custom software on the Nexus 6P but the main reason I haven't yet is that everybody is positive about the experience, I wanted to feel the experience non-flashing users have (and I have the feeling something is wrong -- this is why I asked it). I know I'm more forgiving about OPX's ****ty software because it's only $250, I didn't expect any issues (although it seems I'm the only one ) with the stock software of a $600 phone to be honest.

I posted it since I hoped it might have been caused by some service (like google play services). Not everybody has the same setup so maybe there were people with the same experience. And if you see this as a useless post you shouldn't comment on it.
So if anybody can relate to my cause, please say. I'm very curious since this can be more a problem of my perception of the software than the software itself.

What is your problem? Just because someone doesn't like your beloved phone you are just gonna razz him instead of help him or stay quiet?
My problem is people who want others to solve their problems by magic.
I do not believe in magic so I don't expect somebody to "fix" something. I just wanted to share my issue in the hope of learning more about android.
By the way, maybe it wasn't clear in my previous post but I do love this device. This is no hate post, more an educational post in which I have questions and hope to get answers from people who know about it
my 6p is great except for the mic and sound in calls, it sucks and disconnects a LOT, cant wait for the M10 !!
I'm not saying this because I'm a 6p owner, but because its the truth....anybody that says the 6p is a disappointment.... Could not possibly convince me any other phone makes them happy.
I would still take the 6p over ANY phone available at this time I'm writing this.

I love mine. That being said, the throttling is a huge issue on mine. Between that and Bluetooth issues, actually thinking of RMA.
No problems with mine except for the mic issue that is taking way too long for a fix IMO, the Google thread for the issue has been active for months.
Don't take people being defensive too hard. They tend to get that way.
To be honest you maybe right. Many developers here got the 6p and returned in short return for the older nexus 6.
As for on line reviews. You can't really put much faith in those as we have seen what happens when they speak honestly. They get cut off from future devices.

My sentiments exactly.

Getting frustrated with poor performance

I see others are having issues with the phone being sluggish and freezing - requiring a forced restart. I've had these issues since day one, but the phone is just so damn beautiful to stop using.
I've tried everything I have seen on this site including factory resets and manually adding apps back in (in lieu of restoring from Google). Still happens.
I've been emailing back and forth with Essential customer service, and while they're responsive, I'm getting frustrated.
They asked me to use it in Safe Mode for a couple days, and I had no issues. So they concluded it's an app causing the problem. So they want me to do another factory reset, and then add apps back one at a time for a few days to see if I can pinpoint which app(s) are causing the issue. I have 100+ apps on the phone - this will take months to do!
My comment to them (that they didn't appreciate) is that if they want to compete with the flagship phones of other OEM's the phone should be able to handle any app you you throw at is, and I have no issues with my ZTE Axon 7 running the exact same apps.
Am I off base here? Any other suggestions?

You are off base.
There are apps that can cause issues and no manufacturer can guarantee the performance of their device with any and all apps in the PlayStore.
There are apps that have memory leaks, wake events, etc. and there is no way for them to contain any/all errant apps, nor should they.
I suggest Greenify to look at app behavior and see what isn't sleeping and taking resources.
You can also look at the battery stats and see what app is burning battery.
Social media apps are typically bad.
Things like Pet Rescue and Candy Crush can also cause issues.
Make sure you limit which apps can do notifications and limit those to SMS and email apps.
Good luck.
I would highly recommend testing the Oreo 8.1 beta. HUGE performance improvement
I've been running N 7.1.1 since I got the phone 2 weeks ago and the performance has been stellar, scrolling is smooth and fast, no freezes at all, after reading the issues with 8.1 beta (battery drain, wifi etc.) I'm in no rush to upgrade....
I am on 7.1.1, came here after searching google seeing if they'll ever do this android Oreo Update. I have some phantom touches on my touchscreen. Thank god this phone was cheap. That S9 keeps looking better and better.

Thanks for your honesty. I'm giving greenify a shot though I still think a phone like this should not need something like this.

yes the Samsung will be issue free? dream on! no phone is issue free. I really like the essential and they are right you have to locate the bad app yourself.
because the open structure of android. app builders can really destroy the user experience on your phone.
if you don't want that? buy an iPhone.
for sure the app will destroy the performance of an s9 as well!

The touchscreen issue is related to hardware from what I can see and have read. Performance issues for me are related to memory management and the fact that I use a lot of memory hogging applications. Don't get me wrong just because your experience has been stellar the. I think it's a cool phone. Just not good enough for me to continue using it for another year. The Samsung...I specifically said the S9 because of extra ram and its top of the line screen. Which you can deny if you want but it's true. Best in class screen. They even make the iPhones screen. This phone was cheap so it was worth it for me because I enjoy tech regardless of the flaws. Just need that official oreo update!

look I had the S8 and it was stellar, but was looking for some cash so sold my S8 for $620 and bought the PH-1 for $450, and I'm really impressed so far, ok sure I dont to rocket science etc on the phone so I'm a pretty light user, but on 7.1.1 its been superb since day 1, smooth, snappy and better battery than the S8.
Agreed with all above. Apps are the issue for any phone. I have a zoo of different makes & models. to compare. Social bs apps are the worst. Even google's own are bad enough. Just do a quick search on ""worst apps for draining battery" and start cleaning your phone.
PH-1 Oreo 8.1 power drain is almost nothing comparing to the rest of the 'stable' world. If you don't like to experiment, stay on stable 7.1 until 8.1 is released.

Started using Greenify, but to work as intended, it requires you to set it as a Device Admin. When doing this, it disables the fingerprint sensor.

I'd say that RAM is not an issue here. The software causes phone performance to degrade. 8.1 works fine for me. Hardware itself in PH-1 is awesome. And price tag beats OnePlus and many others. ??
So far, the Oreo OTA update has been great. No issues like I had on Nougat. Hope this remains.

Anyone else simply happy not rooting this phone?

When I bought this phone two weeks ago I was excited at the prospect of rooting it so that I could install my "goto" root apps.
I pondered it for several days and was about to root yet another device and I changed my mind. I find I am enjoying Oreo just the way it is and for me this is a nice change. I tend to root/jailbreak everything immediately. In the end flashing rom updates and fixes actually started to give me anxiety. I found myself dreading updates and it was becoming a real chore and wasn't fun anymore.
Anyone else enjoy this phone without tinkering with or modifying it?
Yep same here, been having this from last year and half, the verizon variant.. Though rooting this is pain and all but just like you I was too. Much into rooting and flashing.
This phone as it is, is awesome enough.
But i liked nougot more

It is an amazing device. The only reason I rooted it was to remove the screen retention with a custom kernel and ckal support. :good:
One thing, is there any way to increase refresh rate without rooting? Just thought about this for some reason.
With Oreo I do not feel the need for root anymore.
On Nougat I used root for KCAL, build.prop mods for 16bit.pcm.offloading & zero shutter lag and also mods for stereo speakers & no throttle.
But I've yet to come across any burn in on Oreo, maybe they fixed it by recalculating the default KCAL values?
They've also fixed the issue of 44.1Khz audio being output as 48Khz through the DAC.
Could also be placebo but I find the DAC to perform better now on Oreo.
I'd love to have zero shutter lag & stereo speakers but that's just a mild annoyance hardly anything to worry about.
The weird thing is that my performance have seeming increased going to Oreo from having the performance mods on Nougat.
The left picture is on Nougat and the other one on Oreo.
Now that I think about it, silent camera would be nice for the default camera. If the setting is there I can't find it. Thanks for the side by side. Interesting.
Yeah, I don't need to root this thing either. I have had this almost a year now. Upgrade to Oreo, and now happier then ever.
May be in future once we Pie ROM with second screen feature, I will think about it.
I used to have a Samsung Note 5, and rooted and flash plenty of times. But, it was a pain to keep up with updates. I learned my lesson to not root Android.

I imagine this is how most get out of the rooting game.
There has to be a serious need to do so and not just for the sake of it.
Though i still believe unless you gain admin rights over your device you do not own it.

First time not rooting in about 10 years, running Oreo and so far everything is good (battery life, performance, features). I haven't even re-installed Nova Launcher, the home with app drawer has been good enough.
The one thing I'm missing is forcing it to 3g/CDMA since I'm on Verizon and where we live in Colorado, there is more and stronger 3g towers than LTE so I've always saved a lot of battery by locking to CDMA and not hunting/swapping for LTE towers. I'm mostly at home so I've got wifi for any real data needs. So other than that one thing, I haven't had a real need to root. So far...

If you have your msl you can force 3g or you can install Xposed and I think there's a module for that. Inteli3g
This is the first time I've rooted a phone for a while, due to the screen retention issue. Else, stock or AOSP unrooted is enough considering most features are available these days

Thanks for replying, I've been trying to get into the field service menu for the last couple of days but will probably have to call VZW and try to convince them to give it to me.
Re: Xposed, since that requires root, that was the one reason I miss having root (Xposed to be able to force 3g, that's how I did it on my old rooted phones).

That wasn't my experience with Oreo on my H918. Perhaps I need to try it again. As I recall, I still had screen retention issues, which is what ultimately led me to rooting my phone to use KCAL. I would really like for this phone to NOT be rooted.

Close to two months after my quoted message I can tell you that my phone do indeed suffer from screen retention. The first month i.e up to sometime in February I did not notice any screen retention - but since having sold my computer and using my phone for much more it has started to reveal itself.
It's only visible in one app, and that's Discord with its dark gray background and the 'retention' is that of the keyboard close to the edge of the screen.
Considering the circumstance around my screen retention, that for now, my V20 is my main 'machine'. I'm not that bothered by it, I have a PC coming in next week - and if I remember I'll tune in some weeks after it has arrived and update whether or not it's gone(with decreased usage).
For me I had had enough with screen burn and rooted this phone in last December.

Yeah, I realized I dug up an old post. Sorry about that.
I may have to try running my phone in a stock form to see how bad it really is. I'm running into some weird issues with, presumably with Magisk, and I want to unroot my phone. The only real reason I can't is because of the screen retention issue.

See, mine will show retention minutes after being booted. For example, after a fresh install of a ROM, be it LOS or Stock, I'll start noticing ghosting before I can get into the color settings or Kernel Adiutor to make the adjustments... that's just from the time in TWRP and the booting. I guess everyone's phone it a little different.

Stock ROM users, so little annoying to use ColorOS, but ok. Need to get used to it.

Well source code will be released in December and it'll take few months for devs to create custom roms. So I'd say even the ones who always use their devices with custom roms/kernels will need to stick with Color OS for half a year ? I'm not too jolly about it but it's something I can use to experience stock rom and experience so I'll be able to share native opinions here.
Color OS is not half bad. Though it has horrible memory managament and aggressive app policies plus security. It's kind of a feature that comes with devices imported from China. After all the government still has to censor and regulate things thanks to Communism. I'd say you can get used to their Android skin. The only thing that is bugging me is how strict their third party app security is. It won't allow to install a lot of apps and will scan each app for half a minute before installing. You can't even turn off this kind of strict app censure unlike Xiaomi devices with MiUi skin.

Don't be. It's close not as bad as sounds. I used it with ease for more than a week even though I'm an advanced user who uses magisk and lucky patcher for debugging reasons all the time and Color os has made it really difficult for me to use them. If you're an average user color os can be a fine daily driver. Even though it has stupid memory, battery management it can still last a day. I've successfully ditched color os thanks to @thesprintster for his unofficial lineage os I can live with a near-stock aosp like experience with face unlock, fingerprint, lucky patcher, magisk working fine. The only thing that custom development couldn't solve (yet) is the 48mp camera which comes with color os. If you're the type of person who uses high resolution pictures all the time I advice you to stay on Color os. If you can live without it(like I do) I can fully help and guide you how to install lineage or aosip rom on your rm5p or rmq. It's up to you whether or not you buy this device but for me it was a best buy for 164$ and I don't regret buying it even though I've bricked my device like 10+ times in the early testing period.

Thank you very much. Unfortunately, I removed it from my basket, was going to buy it on AliExpress' 11.11 sale and decided not to.
Good to know that it's not all doom and gloom. Probably have to wait for more dev work if Realme open things up.
How's AOSIP working on this phone? Using the AOSIP Pie ROM on my current phone and having no end of problems now - random reboots, boot loops out of the blue and battery drain (Honor 5X - old device I know...)
Thanks again.

Everything is fine. Just as it should be. I've tried like 7+ gsi roms and now aosip and lineage. All of them works fine and without issues. I've been on lineage for a week and battery/performance is way superior to stock chingchong color os ?*
ColorOS is pure ?. Heard that android 10 will be close to stock android.. really? Saw the screenshots recently.. same colorOS crap! Why they make based on colorOS? Cook up a ui based on aosp and call it stock android. I think actually realme misleading buyers that they are going to implement "Close to stock android"!!??
