Im on the fence deciding which on to get. Im coming from a note 7. Please help me make the right decision.
I came from the note7. I was really going to go for the v20 but as it's not out yet, I had to make a decision on something else. I initially had the s7 edge but I'm so pi##ed off with Samsung that Im too angry right now to settle for a lesser product than the one o initially purchased. So i bought this to give it a try.
Right off the bat, i think it's a fabulous device, and great value. It's screen is as good as the s7 IMHO. it's faster too. Sound is way better, fingerprint sensor faster and actually i like the software, even the bell. I use nova so i don't care about the UI but the settings are really cool. Lots of stuff i couldn't do on the s7. Plus it's unlocked and dual sim.
The only thing lacking is the camera,. Especially after the s7. But that's number 3 for me after screen and battery, and i cam live with it for now.
So why this and not the v20? Simple. I liked the note7 because it was really compact. Tjats why i like this device too. The v20 is just so big, bulky and fairly ugly. I think this looks cooler. It does everything i want and I'm having fun with the front speakers. Plus they even provide a 2 year warranty and a case.
Who knows, maybe i will get the v20 of the camera irritates me. Or maybe a pixel although these days there is little excuse to pay $900 for a device tjats only marginally better.

As a content Axon 7 owner I would honestly tell you to get the V20 if you want to spend that much. It's a top of the line phone and you're paying top of the line price for it.
Only get the Axon 7 if you want to save money, want a smaller phone, or need dual front facing speakers.
If camera is priority V20 is absolutely the way to go. Axon is on par or better in just about every other way
If you want to spend $700, get the v20. If you want to spend $400, get the Axon 7 or oneplus 3. The extra $300 gets you nougat, removable battery, second display, water resistance, better camera, and most likely more developer support (but time will tell). If that's worth it, easy choice. If not, you have to choose between the oneplus 3 and axon 7, which is a very hard choice.

The V20 isn't water resistant.
To me the only thing lacking is the camera on the a7. I have tried different camera apps but it seems it's the hardware. It's note4 quality.

Everybody talks about the camera. ....but ultimately this is a phone and not a dslr. The camera is more than sufficient for my needs on a phone. Performance is good and having 128gb and having dual sim is just perfect.

I agree with you on everything you said about the A7. I like their software, yes that includes the bell on the lockscreen, It gives me privacy.
My friends iPhone received a text the other day while he was eating and his neighbor saw the text that he shouldn't of seen. I know there's probably an option to turn that off but i dont have to worry about that. The bell turns red and i know there's something there for me to see.
Fingerprint sensor is very fast and accurate and i LOVE the fact that its on the back. Speakers are what won me over from Samsung to A7. Battery is amazing.
I dont use their launcher. There's Nova for that. Camera is pretty good IMO but not at night. I just dont take pictures at night, i sleep at night [emoji23] , problem solved.

I was waiting for the v20 then this video put me off.
For the price I didn't expect plastic on each end.
I tell you what is great on this. The ability to manipulate images. I really like the software. I took some lower light, dusk, pictures and through manipulation, they aren't that bad.

LG lost me after the G3. the g4 offered nothing really new. and the g5 feels cheap and overrated. the v20 having the lens shatter THAT easily shows its cheap. plastic all around important areas are cost cutting corners. the hardware is great but thats about it for me.

I also purchased a Note7, but went back to a Note4. Was thinking about the LGV20 but started doing some research and found the Axon 7.
Received it yesterday and got a SIM (AT&T) earlier today. Loving the phone. Very fast, excellent build, battery life is stellar, and so far has worked great.
Nice thing is that the Axon7 is half the cost of LGV20, Pixel XL, and other options I wanted to pursue.
Plus, a two year warranty and they include a case (works pretty well) and a screen protector.

as long as you dont mess with the bootloader 2 year warranty ;P
I was in the same boat as you, Note 7 had to go back a second time, and I just refused to spend a fortune for 2 years on a phone I dont REALLY want, so I bought the Axon 7 and, honestly, I dont think i'll ever buy a flagship phone again. The $400 "midrange" phones are just too damn good to justify anything more. I literally have no qualms about the camera in the Axon 7. Yes, the samsung camera is better, but I thought it'd be much worse than the samsung, and it's really not. The night mode on the A7 camera is pretty impressive in my opinion. I think i'm spoiled with the dual front facing speakers on the A7 now. This phone sounds absolutely amazing!
I like the a7 but for some reason I cannot get my exchange email to sync to the point that I am missing calendar invites. I have tried everywhere to find a fix. Even used other mail apps but they don't sync at a device level so whatsapp and other apps don't have any contacts. Finally I bought the v20 today. It is superior in many ways but boy do I miss those speakers. Hopefully I can fix the axon issue.

I have used email (exchange) and calendar its working perfectly. Mostly I'm using NINE as my email client so far no issues. And if you have the email option with MDM security like airwatch agent it will not work with A7, as it lacks boot password encryption... Zte is working on that case may be they will fix it with 7. 1 version
Sent from my ZTE A2017U using Tapatalk
Well I did manage to get the email working again, with a different email app. Now I'm walking around wth 2 devices. I would say the v20 seems more polished but it's not worth an extra $450-500! Also a friend of mine still has his note 7 and that is still a better product. So i expect i will stick with the axon and get the note8 eventually. What i do like is that more premium Chinese phones are going to come to the US and it will be hard to justify $850-900 for a device soon.

So to those of you who are still using this phone, what's your next jump? S8 S8+... Pixel 2, other?
I've really enjoyed this phone, but it's time to start thinking about the next upgrade. Oddly, I didn't actually unlock & root this phone. I think this is the first time I haven't done that with a phone. So that's not huge to me.
I personally think the Pixel 2 may be the next jump as I do enjoy the non bloatedness of these phones. I hope though that Google (as much as they charge) competes really well. With the S8 & iPhone 8 coming they have to.
Have any of you thought about your next phone from this one? Are you sticking with this one as long as you can & feel you'll be able to get a replacement that compares? I know for me, the whole buying this from Google & the price was a big factor. Unfortunately the price thin isn't going to happen again. The $475 I paid for this I fear is long gone unless I venture outside of the norm. OnePlus, LeeEco, Huawei, etc. Having Verizon though pretty much limits any of those options however.
it's too early to talking about next phone but between phone in store right now I interested to "moto z force", sadly just exclusive to the US market via Verizon and I'm not living in US! ?
Still very happy with the 6P. I'll probably keep using it as my main phone at least until the end of the year. Will mostly consider OnePlus and Pixel 2 when I'm ready to replace the 6P.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
I think more and more the top of the line phones are just not necessary anymore. Once my 6p dies (which may be a while as I got a brand new replacement from them for the bootloop issue) I'll consider the Pixel 2 (or 3), but most likely I'll lean towards oneplus, or ZTE, or Honor, all of which have had great phones this year, for much less than the pixel.
Any phone that gives me a SD and fast updates.
It's time for Google to stop the no SD card crap.
I don't know if that's going to happen with the no SD thing. This is where I could see getting the S8 vs the Pixel 2 just to lower the price. 32GB phone then buy the card. Hell with all of the goodies Best Buy throws in I'd almost bet on some sort of freebie or two. Whether a wireless charger, SD card or VR headset. I can see something.
I bet the oneplus 4 or 5 or whatever they call it will be pretty good. I just wish more phones could be taken to Verizon. Leaves me with only a few options.

I'm holding out for the Pixel 2 myself, I have Project Fi so its practically the only choice I have for upgrading. I just hope it has some premium features like legit water resistance and a better looking design. I also hope they have enough in stock that I can order one because doubt my Nexus 6P will last that long around then.
Nothing thus far. The 6P already does everything I need to in addition to the large 3450 mAh battery, great screen, and awesome speakers.
Don't think shelling out a few hundred dollars is worth it for under the hood specs that I would barely notice like opening an app milliseconds faster. It's not like my 6P is unable to do what the newer gen phones can do.

That "large" battery is one of the worst in recent smartphone history.
I'll be jumping ship to the s8+ and maybe come back to Google when they don't try and sell a budget phone for a stupid price like with the Pixel.
The only thing I'll miss from the 6p is the speakers.

The 6P battery has been excellent to me, I can't speak for anyone else. It compares to my Droid Turbo that had a 3900 mAh battery. It could be "worse in history" to you, but it has been nothing short of stellar to me. It has absolutely exceeded my expectations given that I've read mixed reviews regarding the SD810.

I have an iPhone 7 plus as well as my nexus 6p, and it is actually ridiculous how much longer the 7 plus lasts. I feel like I can drain my 6p just by looking at it. The real problem with android is idle drain, it is freaking ridiculous.

That's a shame. Products aren't always perfect for everyone. There's always those with bad experiences such as with cars, electronics, etc. I'm talking based on MY experience, not from what I've read, heard, seen, etc. I KNOW based on my experience that I can rely on my phone being at 50% by bed-time, so there's no reason for me to complain about that.
Maybe your next phone will fare better for you.

We've thought about waiting for the iPhone 8. The wife & I have yet to own an iPhone. Her only thought was she already has so many Android apps. I'm kind of the same where I don't want to dump a bunch of $ on a new platform. Get the S8 or Pixel 2 & I've already got the apps I use & have paid for.

Ya, I try to keep an open mind. I wish my pocket book could handle it though lol. Honestly I loved my LG g4, just hated the battery life. I'm kind of finding the 5.5" screen size around my liking. The only thing I hate about the s7 edge is how curved the sides are. It sounds like the s8's will have less of a curved screen. The pixel XL always send to be out of stock in the 128gb version.

Same, I'm not switching but I'm going to try it as my daily driver for a couple weeks and see how much I like it. I'm hoping it's the phone that breaks me away from my Pixel XL, the LG G6 and the S8/S8+ couldn't do it. I love my Pixel but should have known better than to get the 32gb model. Hopefully I'll love the OP5 as much!
I have an XL - interesting to see so many of us here.
My biggest concern is downgrading to 1080p. Luckily my contact lenses make my near sightedness slightly less sharp, so hopefully I don't notice the difference. I pretty much guarantee the camera is not going to touch the Pixel. Maybe get close in very bright conditions in terms of detail, but probably not HDR or low light. It also sucks that there's no 4K video stabilization. I expect the OP5 to perform even better than the Pixel does as far as using the phone goes, and it'll be nice to have capacitive keys to get some more screen real estate and not have to worry about burn in as much. Dash charge is also amazing. I'll be pissed if they don't crank out Android O in a hurry though.

I have a Pixel XL too thinking of picking a 5 up loved my OP3. OP5 seems an upgrade in every area :good:
Been playing with the OP5 for a few hours. It's a tough call. The display on the Pixel XL is noticeably better in terms of sharpness. The camera on the Pixel is somewhat better too - not dramatically if you use the correct modes on the OP5, plus the OP5 has the zoom lens and portrait mode. UI fluidity is actually a bit better on the Pixel, but it's a splitting hair's difference. The OP5 might need some more RAM management optimization, because it wasn't keeping every single app in memory like I expected it to - performed about as well as the Pixel did when swapping between apps (not games) on the phone. Dash charge is something to love though, as are the built-in OS features, and the insanely fast fingerprint reader.
Only real issue I'm having is the display seems poorly tuned. My eyes are noticing a jello/wave effect when scrolling icons and text whereas my S8+, Pixel XL, and every other device I've used recently have not done that.
Overall feels more like a sidegrade than anything.

Returning it isn't ideal - 15% restocking fee. If I don't end up keeping it, I'll just resell it. I really want to like this phone, but the biggest complaint I'm having right now is the damn screen scrolling. I haven't seen anyone else complain about this, so either I'm hyper-sensitive to it, or something is up with mine.

It's the 835 which is the big improvement on the OP5 over the pixel. The rest of the hardware (screen, camera etc) are going to be better on the Pixel. You'll also have up to date android on the pixel for a couple years at least. OP forget about their old phones pretty quickly.
I wouldn't upgrade a pixel to a OP5. In fact if they were the same price I would have bought a Pixel.

At the end of the day, I preferred my Pixel over S8. The curved screen was annoying to me and so was fingerprint scanner placement. I also prefer stock Android over TouchWiz. Pixel is hands down a smoother experience.
Again, all preference. Nothing really wrong with S8.

Im really thinking about the Essental, its pretty much down to this or G Pixel 2 XL, , but the price point and features of the essential are way better, it looks better too, specwise they are very similiar.
I love Project Fi though , i pay only what use , so if my plan is $60 bucks but i only use $20, i pay $20, thats the thing about the Pixel, but at over a $1000 bucks it looks like the Essential with $60/ unlimited by Sprint is a better deal
Anyone else coming from 6P, ive been a Nitrogen rom guy since day one , i love the 6 p , but once you get the battery bug "25%" , the hardware fails quivkly and its time to move on , this is my second 6P ,
Also switching betweeen Sprint/tmobile/uscellular is really cool, however the best service abd what im on 99% of the time is Sprint anyway, its looking like the Essential is tge one
Im coming from.Nexus 6p, OnePlus One , Moto X developers, Note 2, S2 , Note and a few HTCs before that
Well camera is better in 6P and Pixel 2. More features in these phones, there are really no special things at all in essential. Don't get me wrong, i like that. Software is not mature enough, but the Oreo-beta seems Essential are going the right way. Lineage 14.1 is availible and its great. Lineage 15 on the way too. The size of the phone, and the overall quality of it is the best i've ever had! It's a great phone for the price and if price matters, this is a great alternative to pixel 2.
Get the essential phone. No regrats, YOLO swagin here on Oreo and magisk.
Don't get no ca ca lg made phone ?
I upgraded from the original ones one lineage and this phone is very similar in terms of software but very different, upgraded hardware.
Do you want something that already looks dated (pixel 2 or xl2) or do you want that flashy iPhone X look and save $500+ cash?
It's no brainer when you think about how fash technologies advance. Not worth the price and on top of that the stupid little issues they are having.
If I'm paying $1100+ for a phone it better be damn perfect and have the best build quality out there...the new pixels are not...get the essential
I moved from 6P to Essentials over a week ago originally due to the battery bug problem. I was tired of carrying around a battery pack and random phone shutdown at 35% battery. Disclosure, I'm not a techy or an enthusiast so my feedback from just a regular user's perspective. Overall, I'm very happy with the quality and price I paid ($450). I was looking at Pixel 2xl, LG V30 but the design/build with the attractive price point of Essential sealed the deal. The camera is pretty decent. I have no complaints about it. I sideloaded Google camera app and used both Essential and Google apps. I don't find much difference between the two. The pictures from Google app seem to be brighter but Essential app seem quicker to me. Battery is excellent but that's sort of a low bar coming from 6P with battery issue. Software-wise, I'm ok with not being on Oreo it didn't impact my daily use much and overall the softwares on the phones are ok. I think to me this is the best-looking android phones I have ever seen. The build with premium materials and the design look great and feel great in your hands. With the hardware spec not much different from Pixel 2 or LG V30 and the right pricing, I'm willing to compromise somewhat and I was extremely happy with it. Hope this helps.

Same here. Came from a 6P. Did not get the first Pixel because the screen was 5.5 and that was too small for me. Got one of the first essential phones that came out. Had some bugs and they fixed it. Looked into the Pixel XL. Like the larger screen but the price is absurd when you get basically the same with the Essential. Running Oreo beta. No other kids, root or such. Phone works well for me. Camera is adequate for my needs.
Also came from 6P & I freaking love the Essential phone. The build quality is phenomenal and I can get by with the camera. Google didn't do it right to many issues with pixel 2. Go with Essential you won't regret it.
Came from a 6p as my battery was dying at 40% and I bought my phone from best buy instead of google so google could care less that their phone failed me. got the $160 deal on the phone from sprint and liking it so far way better battery camera is decent with the google app and is pretty snappy. the bugs can be annoying but i think it will be good once oreo is out of beta I Hope. really just happy I don't have to carry around my batter pack anymore.

I came from a 6P to and Essential PH-1.
I sent mine back but I was in the first wave of phones with the high price and all the issues.
I have a LG G6 but I'd trade the LG G6 to get a PH-1 again since most of the issues are resolved and accessories are available.
Also at $500 it's the phone bargain of the year.
The feel and form factor are great.
The Quality feels every bit as good as the iPhone X.
Also the XL is bigger and doesn't feel as good. YMMV
Also the XL costs almost double.
Unless the camera is your thing go for the PH-1.
I went 6p to Axon7(great device by the way) to Essential. All were good upgrades over the other. My Essential camera is just as good and really has taken some better pics than either of the devices before it using Gcam. Only thing I miss is the accessories as I'm a case and protector whore.
Go For It
Two 6P's and a Moto X developer phone also. Essential phone is now my daily driver with absolutely no regrets. I'm using Verizon's networkdue to location. Only reasons not to get this would be if you have to have Fi, or have to have headsets. Super quality build, camera on 6P is slightly better, screen is worse on the 6P. For size, imagine that just the screen on the 6P is the size of the whole phone. Battery is so much better. Underwhelmed by the overpriced new Pixels.
Sprint has you sign up never telling you they dont have the goddamn device in stock, they wait til you order it , then send an email that says were sorry its back ordered tough **** asshole , wont have any til christmas, but we are still charging you fees and the overnight shipping and anything else, thats piss poor
I canceled and gave my opinion of the way Sprint is f ucking people , they never mention anywhere that they dont have the phone instock and encourage you to use overnight shipping if you do it before 2 pm for $10 bucks, once you sign up, they send an email and blame the manufacturers of not having enough devices, if this was a first run fone id say ok , this fone came out in august, uts your fwult Sprint and lying to public is bull****
i have some experience of what you have so let me give my 2 cents.
i came from HTC M9 and Moto X Pure on Sprint. i still have my SERO-P Plan but instead i dont lease phones (because they make me switch my plan). I bought the Essential phone in the end of Oct. at best buy and im quite happy with it compared to the other two. At first, i had to return it because it would not activate on sprint and we couldnt figure out why. so i returned it and got another one. the other one turns out though was slippery like glass and overheated so i returned it... then after reading the XDA forums i noticed there is a heavier weight on the new ones so we weighed it before i took it. the new one is actually much more grippy than the last even with dry hands.
what i love about it:
first... the battery life. easily the best in battery life. i get 5 to 6 hours on a normal day of on screen time
fast android updates. the newest updates you have to take out your sprint sim, put a gsm sim and from there it will take the updates
the size, beauty, and weight
internet speed is pretty good too, thought gigabit speed is a hard time of getting actual confirmation from them. ive received on a few occasions 70+ mbps in my small town where ive gotten 30 last time with m9 and x pure.
the look is amazing and pure android is the icing on the cake.
bad things are:
camera is been improved since ive gotten it but still needs work. the issue ive experienced is the graininess.
sometimes i miss calls and texts (not sure if its sprint or the phone itself) but what i noticed is its pretty good compared to the m9 as far as bars go. the x pure was better in signal but it never got the speeds i got from this phone.
usb-c dongle but there is a 3.5mm mod coming for the phone soon from what i heard
response could be improved a bit
overall i will say go for it. despite the negative review... i still give it a 4.5 out of 5 because its andy rubin who knows how to tweak android anyway he feels like it and so far they did alot of improvement with just software updates. do a speed test with your 6p and essential and see for yourself. post a video if you can
Well im still up in the air , im not gonna use Sprint , i dont like being lied to, you dont start a relationship with a lie it never ends well, that being said, i dig the Essential and it is unkocked, just wish Fi would accept it, im also looking at the Pixel 2 XL and the Razer , seen another flagship killer called the Blackview S8 and id jusmp for a samsung S8+ , if the bl.was unlocked , i wont ever buy a locked boot loader unless it can be unlocked , thanks for the review that was what i wanted
I came for the 6P as well and I have no regrets. I do miss the camera on the 6P but I tend to still carry it around for the camera and mess with the os with new roms.
With the gcam port the essential takes some good shots.

@gman2pi or anyone on Verizon's network. how is the data speed and connectivity? My 6P has been having the shutdown issue at 50% and i missed emergency calls text today.
Was so frustrated that I ordered a battery tried to replace it and broke the damn phone and need one ASAP.
My concern has been the thread with the connectivity issues that the phone is having and slow data speeds.

I've had no issues and get the same bar strength and performance as my 6P in my usual locations. I only use phone, text, and primarily e-mail and some downloads on their network. I don't stream much on cellular and don't use Verizon visual voicemail or their other "special features" so can't comment on that.
Thanks, button presses.
Now I'm kind of salty because i got an email from best buy where i could have gotten one with the camera for $500 and i did not pull the trigger.
Came from og pixel, earpiece speaker blew, then went back to my nexus 6.. then this.. battery life is insane..on verizon signal seems great though i have missed some calls.. not sure why.. but great build quality.. no regrets

Currently have a 6P that I replaced the battery on. I am ordering the pixel 2 xl. It's a lot more money, but the video stabilization is so bad on the essential I couldn't buy it.
Hello XDA (it's been awhile)
While I've been INCREDIBLY happy with my rooted Nexus 6P, it's battery capacity has faded (61% degradation) and with the PH-1 now going for $280 I find my track pad hovering above the "add to cart" on amazon but I haven't yet....partially because I want to hold out until a Pixel 3XL
Using 'Camer NX' has given me a modded version of the Google camera and has taken stunning pictures, the only fear I have is that the camera in the PH-1 is a step below what I'm currently using can anyone put my fears to ease about that?
Thanks in advance!

Hold out for the pixel 3. The camera on ph1 is average. And most of us use the Gmod cam for better pictures.

The phone is a great phone and right now you can get the gray on Amazon for under $300. It's a no brain upgrade the 6P.

I'm also considering grabbing the PH-1 now...and seeing what the Pixel 3 looks like around the holidays....and then gifting the PH-1

That's the temptation that's sitting before me.....I just don't want to take too much of a step back in camera quality
Just order the ph-1 from my aging nexus 6(replaced the stock battery a few mo this ago... Cant wait for it to arrive Tuesday at 280 usd its a no Brainerd.

I just ordered an Essential Phone today ($223 on Amazon.com!!) and am coming from a 6P right now as well (early shutdown at 15-20%). I'm not looking forward to a degradation in camera quality, but the 6P is unbearably slow after 2 years, so it's time for an upgrade.
The harder decision seems to be finding a decent case/screen protector.

I've never used a 6P so I can't speak to a comparison but: using GCam (I'm currently running Toylan's, there's a thread with settings) this camera has achieved good enough status. The stock cam in mono is good too. Are there better? Yes of course, but the price difference outweighs camera improvements IMO.
Depends what you're doing and what you expect.
I find the PH1 stock app on par with the 6P (and even the PXL except in poor conditions). The app is significantly improved, you can always use a gcam port, and it's a great phone that rivals the PXL2 (I've had all of these phones and a number of others in the same lifespan as your 6P)

Rivals the pixel 2 in photo quality?? LOL I really hope that isn't what you mean.
That is about the most bs I've ever heard.
Nope, it's a great phone that rivals the PXL2.

Aside from the touchscreen sensitivity, jitter, reception and camera, I would agree. Build quality wise it is way better imo. I moved to a pixel 2 recently, and aside from those things (and amoled screen, I did miss these blacks), I would say it was on par otherwise. It is a good phone, and for the price, a real steal.
It had a few showstoppers for me and getting a pixel 2 for free sealed the deal, otherwise I would have kept it for a long time. I still had to debate which to keep honestly.
Seen many youtube videos saying the cam is much improved in 9.0...also called amazon and they match the difference of 56 dollars on my ph-1 [emoji123]... The camera isn't the reason I'm getting the phone... Community support and 3 years of software updates from the company... It's the only other device besides the pixel line to be running 9.0 on day 1. The ph-one is now 335 on amazon [emoji16].
