I'm scheduled to get my new OP5 on Friday, 6/23. I'm very excited. I'm itching to get a new phone and hope it is better than my Pixel XL.
Anyone else in the same shoes? Any concerns?
For me is the camera. I can care less about the video issues but I do need a solid camera.

I didnt switch per se, i still have my Pixel and plan to keep it as my main Android device, but the OP5 been really solid for me so im almost at the point of switching it over to being my main. This is from someone that hated OP2, 3 and 3T. This phone is pretty damn good!

Same, I'm not switching but I'm going to try it as my daily driver for a couple weeks and see how much I like it. I'm hoping it's the phone that breaks me away from my Pixel XL, the LG G6 and the S8/S8+ couldn't do it. I love my Pixel but should have known better than to get the 32gb model. Hopefully I'll love the OP5 as much!
I have an XL - interesting to see so many of us here.
My biggest concern is downgrading to 1080p. Luckily my contact lenses make my near sightedness slightly less sharp, so hopefully I don't notice the difference. I pretty much guarantee the camera is not going to touch the Pixel. Maybe get close in very bright conditions in terms of detail, but probably not HDR or low light. It also sucks that there's no 4K video stabilization. I expect the OP5 to perform even better than the Pixel does as far as using the phone goes, and it'll be nice to have capacitive keys to get some more screen real estate and not have to worry about burn in as much. Dash charge is also amazing. I'll be pissed if they don't crank out Android O in a hurry though.

I do love my Pixel XL too. Yup, S8 did not cut it for me. After 7 days, I returned my S8.

I have a Pixel XL too thinking of picking a 5 up loved my OP3. OP5 seems an upgrade in every area :good:
Been playing with the OP5 for a few hours. It's a tough call. The display on the Pixel XL is noticeably better in terms of sharpness. The camera on the Pixel is somewhat better too - not dramatically if you use the correct modes on the OP5, plus the OP5 has the zoom lens and portrait mode. UI fluidity is actually a bit better on the Pixel, but it's a splitting hair's difference. The OP5 might need some more RAM management optimization, because it wasn't keeping every single app in memory like I expected it to - performed about as well as the Pixel did when swapping between apps (not games) on the phone. Dash charge is something to love though, as are the built-in OS features, and the insanely fast fingerprint reader.
Only real issue I'm having is the display seems poorly tuned. My eyes are noticing a jello/wave effect when scrolling icons and text whereas my S8+, Pixel XL, and every other device I've used recently have not done that.
Overall feels more like a sidegrade than anything.

Thanks for the excellent comments. Software optimizations may take a few updates. I guess we all have 15 days to return the OP5 so tough decisions ahead. ?

Returning it isn't ideal - 15% restocking fee. If I don't end up keeping it, I'll just resell it. I really want to like this phone, but the biggest complaint I'm having right now is the damn screen scrolling. I haven't seen anyone else complain about this, so either I'm hyper-sensitive to it, or something is up with mine.

There is not even shipping fee...I returned OnePlus 3 and 3T at no cost..they provide the shipping label and 100% return as well...
It's the 835 which is the big improvement on the OP5 over the pixel. The rest of the hardware (screen, camera etc) are going to be better on the Pixel. You'll also have up to date android on the pixel for a couple years at least. OP forget about their old phones pretty quickly.
I wouldn't upgrade a pixel to a OP5. In fact if they were the same price I would have bought a Pixel.

At the end of the day, I preferred my Pixel over S8. The curved screen was annoying to me and so was fingerprint scanner placement. I also prefer stock Android over TouchWiz. Pixel is hands down a smoother experience.
Again, all preference. Nothing really wrong with S8.

I have switched from HTC 10. I didn't like the camera on HTC 10. However it is better than OnePlus 5. Didn't notice any performance difference as compare to HTC 10. I am missing Audio capabilities of HTC 10. I would like to take my statement back, after oxygen 4.5.2 update, phone is running really smoothly. I would say it is crazy fast.. Super duper fast far better than HTC 10. Truly amazing.

Overpriced and design is horrible. Bezels killed the phone. Got the op5. Performance on par. Do t care about camera. As far as looks and feels. Op5 hands down better. Pixel was $1000 plus for.me on launch. Op5 $500 and change and couldn't be happier.
I'm still on the fence whether to stick with Pixel XL or OP5. Camera is a big deal for me. I have kids and take lots of pictures.

OIS wont help you with with moving targets, but improved EIS from patch to patch might.
I'm satisfied. Love it
I'm in love with this phone. I have the 8Gb version and it's so damn snappy. I'm new to oxygen os, but love all the features available, even without root (although I'm rooted). My favorite thing about the phone is how easy it was to root and of course the awesome battery life. First phone ever that I've not had to charge every day.
Very nice
I'm quite satisfied. I keep trying to find the stuff that seems to drive a lot of you crazy but I can't replicate it with my own device. Came from a OnePlus 3 which I almost regretted handing down as I really came to like it.
If I can get the hang of this camera pro mode thing I think I'll be satisfied for the rest of the year.

Then by all means stick with the Pixel XL. I have the OP3T and love its camera for shooting everything EXCEPT moving objetcs. Seems like the OP5 is no different. Uses shutter speed of 1/17 for most moving subjetcs.

If you slap the same software on them (say LineageOS) as to eliminate any results manipulation due to software optimization, the OnePlus 5 should be faster and smoother due to the better specs.
All in all, I believe it's a great phone. But I don't have it yet, so I'm speaking just from research.
If you want the latest specs at a good price and great development support, the OnePlus 5 may be the best choice.
Don't care about OIS or EIS, nor about waterproofing (OnePlus did say it is somewhat water proof) since I'm not planning on bathing with the phone.
It all comes down what you're looking in a phone.
Coming from a Nexus 6, it's definitely an upgrade. Overall very satisfied.
The only things I'm disappointed about are the lack of wireless charging and the speaker placement. I've been spoiled by the N6's dual front speakers. Now I have to use headphones while playing rhythm games because otherwise my hand keeps blocking the speaker.

Hello XDA (it's been awhile)
While I've been INCREDIBLY happy with my rooted Nexus 6P, it's battery capacity has faded (61% degradation) and with the PH-1 now going for $280 I find my track pad hovering above the "add to cart" on amazon but I haven't yet....partially because I want to hold out until a Pixel 3XL
Using 'Camer NX' has given me a modded version of the Google camera and has taken stunning pictures, the only fear I have is that the camera in the PH-1 is a step below what I'm currently using can anyone put my fears to ease about that?
Thanks in advance!

Hold out for the pixel 3. The camera on ph1 is average. And most of us use the Gmod cam for better pictures.

I just ordered an Essential Phone today ($223 on Amazon.com!!) and am coming from a 6P right now as well (early shutdown at 15-20%). I'm not looking forward to a degradation in camera quality, but the 6P is unbearably slow after 2 years, so it's time for an upgrade.
The harder decision seems to be finding a decent case/screen protector.

I've never used a 6P so I can't speak to a comparison but: using GCam (I'm currently running Toylan's, there's a thread with settings) this camera has achieved good enough status. The stock cam in mono is good too. Are there better? Yes of course, but the price difference outweighs camera improvements IMO.
Depends what you're doing and what you expect.
I find the PH1 stock app on par with the 6P (and even the PXL except in poor conditions). The app is significantly improved, you can always use a gcam port, and it's a great phone that rivals the PXL2 (I've had all of these phones and a number of others in the same lifespan as your 6P)

Aside from the touchscreen sensitivity, jitter, reception and camera, I would agree. Build quality wise it is way better imo. I moved to a pixel 2 recently, and aside from those things (and amoled screen, I did miss these blacks), I would say it was on par otherwise. It is a good phone, and for the price, a real steal.
It had a few showstoppers for me and getting a pixel 2 for free sealed the deal, otherwise I would have kept it for a long time. I still had to debate which to keep honestly.
Seen many youtube videos saying the cam is much improved in 9.0...also called amazon and they match the difference of 56 dollars on my ph-1 [emoji123]... The camera isn't the reason I'm getting the phone... Community support and 3 years of software updates from the company... It's the only other device besides the pixel line to be running 9.0 on day 1. The ph-one is now 335 on amazon [emoji16].

Hey guys,
I was wondering if upgrading worth it. Also my girlfriend wants to buy a pixel and we were waiting on the 3 to see the changes, however for what I've seen I don't think worth the upgrade or buying the pixel 3, pixel 2 still performs perfectly.
My question is, all those feature pixel 3 will have since it's software wise we will have it also in our pixel 2 right ? That smart call, top shot and night mode ?
Also that notch... Ewks...
Anyone have any opinion why I should upgrade to pixel 3 and give this 2xl to my girlfriend or should I just keep it and buy her a pixel 2 instead and keep the money ?
Cheers
I assume the features are all coming to 2/2XL as well. And the notch is a huge deal breaker for me...
I'll skip all notch phones and wait for notch free flagship... maybe in 3 years??? :"P
Depends on disposable income. You got the bucks get the 3. Give your gal the 2 she'll love it.
That's what I'm doing with the Mrs. If you're strapped for cash keep yours and get her a Pixel 2. Can't go wrong either way.

Pixel Visual Core Changes
Next, a Product Manager confirmed to us that the Pixel Visual Core has indeed been updated. Until the device’s kernel source code is released, we won’t know exactly what new functions have been added to the HAL. However, we’re told that the Pixel Visual Core is now actually used by the Google Camera app for Google Lens suggestions, HDR+, Top Shot, Motion Auto Focus, and Photobooth. That’s most likely why the older Pixels will get support for Night Sight and Playground but won’t get support for Top Shot, Motion Auto Focus, or Photobooth – they don’t have the newer Pixel Visual Core.

No Pixel 3 XL minor spec's for me. Be staying with the Pixel 2 XL which has plenty of updates left in it!
I grabbed the 3. It's essentially a more ergonomic Pixel 2 XL with a better screen, better front camera(s), wireless charging, IP68, better speakers, and another year of support.
OG Pixel to Pixel 2 XL was worth it to me but the Pixel 2 XL to Pixel 3 XL not so much
Staying with 2 XL
I'm really tempted to get the 3XL because it's BOGO at verizion but I'm resisting the temptation . I like the better screen and sound but the 2XL is still a good phone and don't really see a big jump in performance. Plus "some" of the new features will come to the 2XL so I think I'll hold off until next year when it's more of a upgrade.
I'm not buying another pixel if they stick to such a huge notch. "Designed by Google" - yeah, no ****. It'll be exact same phone in terms of looks as I'll hide that notch anyway. So a little better screen, speakers, camera ... Wireless charging I don't use anyway, never use it for deep water diving anyway ... Useless.

Useless to you. It's all subjective. Try out the OnePlus 6T.
I ordered the 3 XL cuz I just at like changing phones every year. But I also have a 2 xl and snapped out of zombie mode and cancelled my order. The 2 camera is still amazing. This phone is fast as hell. I like root even if it's not too needed these days. It just didn't seem like an upgrade worth $1000 for.
Oh yeah....and I HATE gesture navigation.
I don't really see the 'upgrades' with the Pixel 3. All the features announced are pretty much coming the the Pixel 2 and the notch is a real disadvantage, so why bother?
Sticking with my Pixel 2XL for couple of years, still functions flawlessly. Let's see what the Pixel 4 holds...
What "should" have been the Pixel 3xl... will be the Oneplus 6T!
I will not upgrade, I don't see the updates as worth the money. And in general I feel that the pixel phones are overpriced compared to the competition...
I ordered the 3 xl. Since I've been paying more than needed on my payments for my 2 xl, the 3 xl with the stand will be pretty much the same payment. Got it for the better cameras as I use mine a lot, also the wireless charging, and the better screen. I checked one out in a Verizon store, and the notch does NOT look as bad in person either. Though, if any devs make it so you can partially hide it instead of fully, I'll be all over that.
Probably will upgrade but truth is the pixel 3 is a very weak effort by Google. I should probably just call it a lazy attempt. I know some tech YouTubers have been saying that the effort is in the software but at least apple actually did a proper upgrade to their internals and software, not a half baked one .
I'll use it for a week and see how I feel about it.

I see the Pixel 3 an "s" year for the Pixel but better than what Apple's done. Things the Pixel 3 has that the Pixel 2 doesn't have or won't get:
Better processor, screen, speakers, wireless charging, wide angle lens for the front, photobooth, top shot, super res zoom, motion auto focus, lens suggestions for Google Lens, and Titan M security chip.
That's a bigger difference than the iPhone X and the iPhone XS.
That being said, I don't think any phone is worth getting for a yearly update. Getting the latest and greatest on a yearly basis just makes everything incremental and less significant of an upgrade. And going from one 2018 to another 2018 is just a lateral move which is even a bigger waste.
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
Have you seen the XS? It's amazing. Feels better, looks better, runs better. Don't knock it if you haven't tried it. Battery life optimized to where you will drool. I'm not going there but..
Edit.. it's getting close. I'm not rooting these days there are no roms to speak of the. Wear OS is sketchy vs I watch or whatever they call it. Talk me down. I shouldn't have gone into the store and compared. The notch in the iPhone actually looks good. WTF? That being said I'll probably get the pixel 3 on BF. Probably..
Hi I'm looking to change my pixel 2 xl cause of performance issues alot of lag and delay
I was thinking of Mate Pro 20 but I changed my mind after reading honest review on XDA-Developers
Is it better choice to get one plus 6t instead
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
I got a 2xl and waiting for my 6t, which will be delivered tomorrow. Considered the pixel 3 but it's just a rerocked 2
I'm coming from a pixel 2xl. I was looking for something new because i started to feel apps were closing out too fast and reloading too often.
I started adding more apps. Mostly security camera and home automation apps. I wanted to see if having more RAM would help. I didn't even have any interest in the pixel 3 since they didn't upgrade the RAM
So far I've been pleased. Apps stay open longer but it seems it takes awhile for the phone to know which apps you use the most.
Battery life has been noticeably better but not by much
In screen fingerprint scanner isn't as fast as the pixel but the face unlock on the op6t is blazing.
I miss AOD and I'm surprised how often i use the squeeze for Google Assistant.
OnePlus gestures blows away both of Android navigation options. I'm happy to have the extra screen space.
Surprised how well the OnePlus screen compares to the pixel. There are more color options to adjust for your liking and the OnePlus seems to get a tad brighter. The pixel looks sharper on higher res content but barely and only if you stare.
OnePlus camera is okay. I'm not a huge picture person so the OnePlus is passable for me.
Pixel feels lighter and is easier to hold. Less fingerprints because of the material on the back of the pixel.
Right now I've factory reset the pixel to see if i can recover the performance. I bet it will be smooth again.
Hope this helps

Coming from the pixel 2xl. The 3xls notch is disgusting compared with the price of the 3xl brining not a whole lot of new things make the 3xl a definite pass. It's unfortunate that this was the fastest phone I've ever had but in a year I've reset it 4 times due to extreme lagging and slowdown recently. Battery life dropped by almost half as well. The only redeeming quality is the camera but I am willing to give that up for the time being.

Yes. It's just a repost of the one from the 6 subforum.
Functionality is the same on the 6. Same things work, and same things don't work.
We can only use the 6.1 mods. Older 5.x versions won't connect to the camera on our phones.
Just saw the specs of P5....Poor resolution upgrade!
I guess it's pointless and waste of money....what are your thoughts?
Since our security updates will end this month, I plan to upgrade for those and take advantage of the strong T-Mobile 5G signal in my area.

My thoughts?
If you only now just saw the specs you haven't been following the news. You likely also do not understand why Google didn't go with the 865/865+ in the two devices.
For me, it boils down to which features I consider more important. Right now I'm leaning towards the P5 simply because of the aluminum body, but the 4A 5G and its headphone jack is compelling. I think in the end, it's going to boil down to "do I want to pay the extra $200 or not?"

Coming from the 2XL... The 5 is an upgrade. As far as the ppi... https://www.androidauthority.com/chasing-pixels-810926/ this article from AA is very good and I'm sure I won't notice it much. But I am going to wait for reviews and actually see it side by side

Ive never been one of the sheeple, the people who buy into aspirational technology (people who aspire to own somehting because its new and everyone else has one), so its not even a decision for me. Im a fucntional user, if a device performs the functions i need it to, im happy. The only reason i ever upgrade devices is when one is dead, or very much close to being....
I do not get the "new device every 6 months" buyers...i just dont, i think thats insanity
Personally i look at the lines of sheeple at Apple Stores on every release and weep for humanity, and the planet which gets raped to bring people ovepriced (thanks to Apple - they are the root of all evil, not least because they overprice their products, thereby forcing everyone in the market to follow suit, because to do anythign less is to be seen as inferior, so blame Apple, i do, asshat comapny) devices they dont really need
Pretty much the forumula is: new phone = new camera that takes pictures of an even more distant galaxy, hmm very useful in every day life
Some people in some countries have way too much spare money if theyre buying new phones all the time
Im sticking with what works for me, not a corporations bottom line, thanks

I loved the Pixel 5. I think Google made a small decision to stick with full hd resolution simply because you don't notice as such if the panel is good. It's easy on the battery. It will be easy on the chipset and provide consistent performance.
Pixel 5 does not lack anything as such. The only thing i was a bit disappointed was ufs 2.1 storage. Other than that I'm loving the Pixel 5. I'll get it maybe this Christmas or so!
The more I think about it, the more the 4a5g is looking like the better deal. Only differences between it and the five are two less gigabytes of RAM, no 90hz refresh, and a smaller battery, but the battery is still bigger than the 2xl, so battery life should still be an improvement. I've not yet owned a phone that had a 90hz refresh rate, so that's not really a huge deal to me yet.
The big draw toward the 4a5g for me personally is that the screen is bigger, which would make it feel like more of an upgrade compared to the 2XL.
The materials used are also different, but I've never really been a huge fan of glass backs. Plastic was always all right with me, so the 4a5g won't bother me in that regard. It supposedly feels pretty good in the hand even though its materials are "lesser than” the materials used for the 5 back.
Forgot about wireless charging too, but personally I've never owned a phone that had wireless charging, so again, not a big deal for me yet.

I second your thoughts here. 4a5 is certainly a better handset and not much hard hitting on the pocket too!
So far with lack of reviews and having seen a few of the random videos we can get. The OnePlus 8 Pro is looking better to me. Really need to see some full reviews

I kind of agree with you here, except that I am seriously looking at going the OnePlus 8T route.

I am changing my mind to OnePlus 8 Pro too, I can go to swappa.com and get for less price than P5 with taxes. I am seriously considering going back to iPhone. Google has been using the same camera sensor hardware since the Pixel 2 came out. That means if Google ported the sofware algorithms to the Pixel 2 it would take pictures the same if not damn close to being the same.
after being a 4 year pixel 2 xl owner... the pixel 5 feels like a natural successor. Jut my opinion though
i currently use a pixel 3 because i prefer the size but im pretty much done with the pixel series. the cost is far too high and the features are less and less. the 4 had no fingerprint reader..... so i was thinking of getting a Zenfone 7. great size, great amount of ram........ EXPANDABLE STORAGE!!! but after seeing the OnePlus Nord N10, i might change my mind. ill have to see after the first reviews but it has what i want/need in a phone. google is just too obsessed with trying to either win the apple crowd, or become like apple.
maybe if they ever add features like expandable storage ill buy another pixel but the odds of that happening are not good. knowing google, theyll probably give up on the pixel line after the pixel 7 so i plan on holding on to my Panda Pixel indefinitely.
Okay i changed my decision probably.
I don't think i'll be getting Pixel 5 solely because of outdated hardware. Only if they had upgraded the camera sensors i'd have gone for it. The current sensor is at the end of its life.
I can't decide if I want to get a OP8T, OP8 Pro, or Pixel 5.
I prefer the flat screen of the 5 and 8t, the rear fingerprint sensor on the 5, and the telephoto on the 8 pro.
Get rid of P2-XL?

Depends on your battery. After October, no more OTA's from Google.
If your battery is good, between updates from Google Play Store and LineageOS, I think the phone
would be plenty secure. I plan to keep using mine for awhile. running LineageOS

lol Flat screen is such a bliss. My next phone will be a flat screen. I am tired of this curved look and miss touches due to the curve
I went from. The p2xl to the 5, it's definitely an upgrade for me. I love how smooth it feels with the extra ram and 90hs screen, the SD765g has no trouble giving me a great experience on the couple games I do play, (pubg and genshin impact) the battery life for me is about double what the 2xl was and I'm happy to know I'll be getting monthly security updates for the next three years. There are still a couple things I don't like. The top behind the screen speaker is just so-so, far inferior to the 2xl's stereo front firing speakers. However I don't watch or listen to much without headphones or a bt speaker anyways and it does fine for calls. they removed a feature I did actually like.. active edge, I miss sweezing to activate assistant rather than saying hey Google or swiping the corner but still not really a deal breaker for me just so thing to get used to.
