It won't get better with 7.0 every device that ran 7.0 at the time has sh**ty battery life I wish they would just give us 7.1.x for the last update

Here's the zip for the WiFi K1 Shield, hosted on Google Drive.

here an answer from Manuel Guzman on Twitter
Me:"Hi Manuel. I've seen the new update 5.4 for Shield Tablet LTE. I don't understand a thing... In the post You say that You all are preparing a new update (5.5 maybe?) to fix heat and battery drain? Thx a lot"
Manuel:"We are working with Google on a solution. It is affecting other devices as well"
I can't post the link

Antutu score after 5.4 update
So I just updated my shield (original not K1) to the new 5.4 OTA and my Antutu score jumped by 40,000 points... It went from normally being around 89k to 133,136... I...I don't understand... I love it but I just don't understand this sorcery.
Though it kinda makes me suspicious, could Nvidia be cheating on benchmarks? This kind of performance increase through one update seems a little much.

New antutu, new scores. 90k was on the older antutu...

I wonder if they really can repair that terrible battery life on stock rom. I am looking for alternatives, but Pixel tablet cost is giantic when compared to shield

I have a Pixel C also it's like 2x smoother/faster than Shield K1 but way over priced and you lose the gaming aspect that made this tablet great.I wish they would optimize it more even with the map power preset it still stutters/drops frames around UI it's awful to use and battery life can be repaired with 7.x Every device that got 7.0 had battery issues and 7.1.1 fixed them all

Performance trick - disable GAPPs
Hi all,
Just signed up to mention this tip.
Upgraded to 5.4 and found it was performing poorly when switching apps as well as anything requiring input. Overall the lag was killing the experience of my trusty old shield. 5.2 and 5.3 both introduced some performance issues and battery drain for me.
However after almost resigning to relegating my shield to the dusty shelf . Came across a post that mentioned lag goes away by disabling some GAPPS... I was suspicious that it would make a difference but wow back to the speedy shield I knew from before  .
I witch hunted all GAPPs to disable on my device but it seems like it could be YouTube is the main culprit. The difference is night and day. My guess is the dual core nature of the shield is not working well with the latest background GAPP services... but who knows.
In case someone doesn't know by now GAPPs = Google Applications
Hope it works for someone else. Enjoy. :good:

Did they make deal with Nintendo not to update the tablet as well?

I flashed via TWRP, from 5.2 I flashed 5.3 and immediately flashed 5.4, then flashed SuperSu. Booted fine.

Just managed to update both of my european (ROW) LTE Shield Tablets ("faulty battery" + replacement) to 5.4.
Since I couldn't find a download link anywhere I just downloaded the full 5.4 OTA on the replacement tablet and made a backup of the .zip file. Update wen't without problems on both tablets (#1 was on 5.1, #2 was on 5.2) via TWRP. (SuperSU + nomoreOTA on the faulty battery one as well)
I uploaded the OTA afterwards. so here is a link, if anybody is still looking: FULL 5.4 OTA ROW LTE

performance v50018 vs 20a

I installed the new official rom v50020a and are disappointed with performance especially in games. That performance was superior v18a. This rom seemed to me the most powerful than all roms, since the battery is emptied very quickly, especially in stand by. In AnTuTu benchmark 18a give almost 27,000 and v20a less than 24,000. In Real Racing 3 feel the difference. V50020a is final rom for OTA? Performance and battery worse than the first official rom. I think I'll go back to 4.2.2.

If the v18a was superior, why not go back to it instead?
The problem is that the rom v18 of battery empties very quickly in standby. I have to install a custom rom based on v18 with another kernel.

What do you call 'very quickly'? I found it emptied slower than with 4.2.2 in standby with WiFi on.
I set the wi-fi to be turned off when the tablet is in stand by. It is among the settings after installing a new rom.

I don't, but that is not my point. What do you call losing charge very quickly?
I overdid it a little with unloading the battery. Battery runs exactly I was wi-fi settings on standby.
I had it for a few days but battery use seemed as normal.

Im sticking with 4.2.2 based on being able to watch amazon prime. Huge bummer KK doesn't allow it.

Did you notice any difference on the screen brightness, gamma values and 7 spots on the bottom?
Jessooca said:
The battery life is actually better,by nearly 2 hours. I have tested and ran it for 5 days, it's all about your settings. If you have the screen on 50% one day or 65% another day it's always going to fluctuate.
Theres no complaints about the battery life with 18 here, easily I get 2 hours more. Some days 4.

The fix for Watching Amazon Prime is in a thread by, i believe it was Surviveland....
Make sure that you have UNinstalled the flash player installed in your device if you have one installed first and then install the hacked one for compatibility reason.
1) Download Dolphin Browser from the Play Store
[/B]You MUST have Dolphin Jetpack on in the settings to enjoy it.
As far as I have noticed, Dolphin Jetpack better solves the compatibility with flash player, such as crash issue & freeze issue in full screen.
2) Download the hacked flash player HERE: http://goo.gl/MuU9SU
If your device refused to install apk outside Google Play, you need to change your settings in your device (Settings> Securities> Unknown resources) to allow installation of apps from unknown sources.
3) Make sure that the flash setting in Dolphin Browser (Click Menu>Settings>Web Content>Flash Player) is on.

Not really, device tree for N9 is extremely similar to mine. Plus it currently has forced encryption.
Installed latest nightly with ElementalX kernel and everything looks good. I like the Expanded Desktop view to maximize viewing screen. Moreover, the options on launcher to show big icons is a plus.

How's the performance of CM12 compared to stock? It made a HUGE difference on the 2012 Nexus 7, so curious if the same on the N9.
Yes, I am also interested to know about the performance and, especially, battery life benefits of CM12 on our Nexus 9. I am refraining from rooting my 5.0.1 stock for the moment hoping that 5.1 finally adresses the governor "issue" in order to get better battery life and less hiccups out of this thing while browsing, but if CM12 delivers already, I might just go all the way and install it right now.

this,right here.
The charging isnt even just slow, its eratic honestly. if i use a 1.2 amp charger it takes over 13 hours to charge. using a 1.8 amp one reduces it to around 8 hours.
Its stable and all, but the charging issue, thats the reason i've decided to go back to stock rom.

[Q] How do I downgrade 4.4 to 4.3?

So I bought the XOLO Play Tegra Note 7 ; I got this today.
Inspite of very less , rather no development for this device , I still bought it because it is a bang for buck ( got it for INR 8k ; roughly $130 )..
I have done all my homework behind this tab before buying .... and have reached a conclusion that I am in no way gonna stay with kk ...
( I got 4.4 out of the box ) ... and I want to downgrade to 4.3 JB ...
Anybody please spend a minute or two to suggest me how to do it? Can I do it in the first place?
Any suitable workaround ?
I will be grateful Thanks! :highfive:
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but I think you'd have to root and use supertools!
Out of curiosity, why is it you want to revert back to JB? I was thinking about it myself so that I can get EA games to work but i'm sticking with KK in the hope that nvidia release lollipop soon. I could be waiting a long time though :/

Thanks for the heads up
One of the 3 reasons why I want to get JB on this is the same as yours
To get EA games working ...
The other 2 being better RAM management and battery life ...
Will root it tomorrow and downgrade .... Thanks!
And as far as L for pur tab is concerned .... I find it highly unlikely that they're gonna roll it out anytime soon
Nvidia seems to have forgotten about this wonderful tablet :crying:
The RAM utilisation and battery is why i'm hoping lollipop will get pushed out sooner rather than later. I'm staying optimistic that we'll get it not too far in the future (I only got it on my HTC One recently) but Nvidia's silence on the issue isn't doing their PR any good with their existing TN7 customers.
I have had the TN7 through quite a few OTAs and I didn't notice a difference with battery consumtion, does JB perform a lot better in that respect? It might persuade me to revert back if that's the case, i'm already rooted so I don't have anything to risk in that regard. It's just a lot of hassle reinstalling everything again, I only recently wiped the thing and started fresh (I couldn't get rid of that stupid "insufficient memory" message from google play updates, even though I had about 5GB available).

Andy4Shurr ... Not drastically but battery is supposed to get better by 130% if you revert back to JB ....
I am currently getting 450 MBs of free RAM right now on KK .... My friends owns a tegra note 7 too .... he never upgraded to 4.4 ... and he supposedly gets 560-570 MBs of Free RAM even with quite a number of apps intstalled.
Plus the adreno GPU works way better on 4.3 on our tablet ... I rooted my tab some minutes ago and am planning to downgrade now
Will run tests and will use it and update you with my personal opinion about the difference if you want me to :good:
That would be really helpful, thank you. It will be just my luck that I'll roll back and then Nvidia will release lollipop... mind you, that wouldn't be too bad I guess
So did you see any improvements Entrana? You've had me really pondering the idea of going back to JB and I've just finished backing my tab up ready to downgrade. I'll probably get it restored this morning to see if there is a notable improvements on my device.

I am so sorry Andy I totally forgot I had to tell you about my experience with reverting back ...
I saw many many many notable changes ...
The tab heats less upon heavy gaming .... even when it does, the touch responsiveness is unaffected... ( This annoyed me a lot when I was on 4.4)
Reverting back seems to work wonders on the battery juice!!!
Also I got EA games to work now
I experienced an issue with the flip cover when I was on kk , the screen didn't wake up automatically when I removed the cover.
But it works every single time for me now when I'm on JB :fingers-crossed:
However the free RAM apparently is the same as kk , but the overall performance is butter smooth now
The stylus is the same , my younger brother keeps on drawing stuff from it all day
And yeah , the camera just got from poor to poorer :3
Hope this helped :good:
Thank you, I have just finished flashing JB on my tab actually (for the second time - I restored some KK data using titanium backup and then it wouldn't boot after the first attempt so I'm just restoring Market Apps only now I have used Supertools to flash JB again).
I can't wait to start playing Real Racing actually, I have missed that game so much, haha. I don't use the camera much either, only the front one for skype, so that will be fine.
Thanks for the feedback.
EDIT: I read yesterday that Real Racing 3 has been fixed so it works on 4.4.2 without those audio problems so I have actually upgraded back to KitKat and I can confirm this is true. I do notice that battery has taken a hit though, if I'm charging and downloading/browsing at the same time I still see a discharge (even in power saving mode).

too bad if nougat is available for Moto G4 Play. but nougat is not supported yet.. xposed and magisk lack of modules
Some people don't care about xposed or magisk... All I want is even better performance (better RAM management/CPU usage) and better battery life (Doze on the go).

Interesting comment. If truely seeking those characteristics then Android 6 is almost manditory as few Nougat ROMs offer the control available via Xposed.
Agreed 'Doze on the Go' is essential for battery life but easily implemented on Marshmallow via numerous well regarded apps or (ideally) Xposed modules.
Nothing against Android 7.x. It's an excellent base that beings a nice suite of incremental refinements. Unfortunately, CPU/RAM management is no better than native Android 6.x and the lack of Xposed support makes further tuning more difficult (arguably impossible) at the user level.
Android 8 does seem to offer some improvement resource management. Be interesting to see how it plays out in the real world, especially on back ports.
I don't think that Android as an OS can get any better, I mean what else can they implement in upcoming versions? This very cheap device is capable of doing about anything that I need almost instantly. No lags, acceptable day and a half battery life (I don't play games). I expect it to be even better with nougat. Now this is way off topic, but why do people need 4/6/8 GB of RAM, and milion cores qualcomm 8xx CPU (except maybe for games)? I've been using this SD410 from 2013 for over a 6 months now, and it does everything perfectly fine, no one lag... For 150$...

Appears you define 'near perfection' relative to your own experiences and expectations. I could offer various analogies but assume you get the point.
I own numerous Android device with CPUs ranging from SD410 at the low end to SD820 (mid range); RAM goes from ½GB to 4GB. I enjoy each device for the allocated tasks. Things would be much different if I swapped them around.
Do your homework on Android 8. There is a lot in the pipeline, especially for newer devices that come with O pre-installed. In contrast, Nougat was a relatively minor tweak to the already solid Marshmallow. Most of the newer functionality Android 7 has been available since KitKat via Xposed modules. Google just decided to bake it in (thankfully) but still left a lot of goodies out.

Running stock Marshmallow on (bootloader) unlocked XT1607. While I have Xposed and a few key modules installed phone is not my daily driver so may consider stock Nougat if there is an obvious benefit (not seeing it now); AOSP and Lineage are also contenders. Biggest concern is inability to control some protected processes w/o Xposed. At present I score a 0.2% per hour average idle drain rate with all radios, full location services and push mail/messaging enabled. Would also miss UI controls offered via Edge and GravityBox.

I got the base rom to run pretty good once I turned off all notifications and animations, and set the max number of background processes to 4
I like los14.1... but I've barebones the build by deleting everything I don't want and then I added some tweaks to make it feel real good.
All the custom roms are more or less the same (except for stock based like stock+ rom) because they are all made from Steel01's sources baked with custom rom specific files. So pick the one you find the prettiest or the most useful...
Hi All
What is latest ROM , there is any stability one from end of 2018 . Maybe someone working on new one ?
It depends what you're going for on your tablet. If you're aiming to keep all the Nvidia specific features I would recommend the 5.4.1 stock+ rom. If you don't care about any of that I believe that lineage is the way to go. Between the two, performance is the same for the most part, lineage is based on 7.1.2 though instead of 7.0, so you get a few newer features. If I have time later to come back to this I'll link them.

I've been trying the 5.4.1+ rom. For some reason it crashes and boot loops after installing Swift Keyboard Damn, I really like that keyboard. Then I updated Magisk on it, to get a message saying the new Magisk app isn't supported. So I uninstalled it to download the previous version and that caused a bootloop now too
Just flashed it again, hopefully it works better this time.
I am also wondering what is the best ROM for my K1 is?
First off, I bought this tablet used. Did some research and found out about the battery recall, mine is not one of them, as in I have the newer/better battery.
Secondly I did update the stock rom to 5.4 but the battery drain was horrendous. No gaming, just surfing facebook or the internet was a draining the battery in a few hours. Even in standby on my nightstand, battery was almost dead the next morning. Then after some research many people said to downgrade to 5.2 which I did and it pretty much fixed the battery drain issue.
Then I found out about LineageOS and decided to install 15.1, performance is good, but does still experience some battery drain issues, but not as bad as 5.4.
I also know that earlier this year LineageOS has returned support for the Nividia Shield K1 tablet, but is that for OS 17 and how long do I have to wait for that version?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

On 5.4 to get regular battery usage you have to enable custom cpu profiles, the default profile doesn't idle properly and the cpu's stay in a higher frequency state. You can then have all 4 cores enabled and it will idle properly (well it does for me), and you have nvidia driver support for the original wifi game controller which i have.
Otherwise, if you use a LineageOS 14 build, you can have full hardware video acceleration, on 15 builds you won't have hardware video acceleration.
So what your saying is I can go back to 5.4 and just play with the settings? Any special apps to do this, or just all within the android settings that need changing in order to have the performance and stop the battery drain problem?
If it's just the android settings, what are the settings I need to change? Tutorial?
Thanks
AOSP extended from bit obsession is a bit old but still snappy!

battery
honestly, i think we are all screwed
my tablet wont charge at all now. it shows the icon on the screen saying it is charging but it doesnt charge at all. sometimes i can get about 10% on it.
the computer no longer recognises the device and i have only ever used official ota firmwares for it
spoke to Nvidia and all i got was the out of warrenty response.
they no longer care in anyway about shield tablet users and as it is discontinued its not like you can even buy a replacement. you cant buy secondhand either because theyll all just have the same bollocks battery issues we have on ours now.
I'll contribute a data point for anyone reading in late-2019 going into 2020:
I'm on Stock+ 5.4.1 on my K1 and it has been great for me so far in the last few weeks since I flashed it. I had been on the stock Marshmallow firmware for the past three years and was having the typical lag issues on wake. It was so severe that the tablet was completely unusable coming out of a deep sleep. It was also a chore to reboot it because even the lag on holding down the power button was agonizing and unpredictable. It was worse than booting Windows with an old hard drive.
I've had no lag-on-wake issues with Stock+ 5.4.1 so far. It's like coming back to remember why I liked this tablet in the first place after hating it for the past couple of years. I hadn't used it for anything other than daily alarms over the past year and change, but lately, I've been using it for bedside reading again instead of my phones.
To address a few of the issues that have been brought up in this thread:
I haven't had any battery drain issues with Stock+ 5.4.1. It seems to do about the same on my K1 as Marshmallow did, which was 100% to 15% on idle except for daily alarms (and snoozes) from Sunday through Saturday.
I ordered a new 6000 mAh replacement battery from AliExpress and will be installing it when needed. My current battery life isn't great, but it's not horrible either. I think it still manages to have about 80% of its original capacity.
After installing Stock+ 5.4.1, I flashed the latest Magisk 20.1 zip (Stock+ 5.4.1 came with Magisk 16.0) from within TWRP at a later date with no issues. Magisk 18+ is not compatible with Magisk Manager versions older than 7.0.0, but the old versions of Magisk Manager were bad in that they would always ask you to update to the latest version regardless of what version of Magisk you had installed. Basically, Magisk Manager was asking you for permission to nuke itself.
I have never used the official Facebook or Messenger apps, but virtually every comment I've ever read about them say that they're battery killers. Use a third-party app that combines both and has a smaller memory footprint.
I used to be an avid user of SwiftKey, but I've since soured on it. I haven't installed it on my K1 since the firmware upgrade and I don't know if I will going forward. The biggest benefit of SwiftKey used to be the dedicated number row, but its predictive swiping was the worst I had ever used. I'm on Gboard now and it seems to be working well. The only feature I miss from SwiftKey is the arrow keys to move the text cursor.
I am also wondering what is the best ROM. I got a K1 used as well not too long ago, and I mostly want to use it as a study tool for some CompTIA certifications in 2020, so viewing PDF's/word docs, exam simulations, and tutorial videos will be it's primary function. I do like comics so I would like it to perform snappy.
I really have no interest in gaming or social media.

I went with a stock-based ROM because I still wanted all of the tablet's functionality to work as designed, even though I've never played games on my K1 using a controller or created an Nvidia account. However, as long as retaining those features won't cause the device to run poorly and there isn't anything inherently poor about the stock experience, I don't mind. Stock-based ROMs are usually easier to set up and install. Nvidia stock firmware isn't known for being particularly bloated or heavy like that of some phone manufacturers, but of course LineageOS is still going to be faster at the cost of some device-specific features.
Given your intended use, as long as you use something newer than the stock Marshmallow firmware and its wake lag issues, you probably don't need to worry about much else.
I decided to dig my K1 out of the closet and have a play with over the holidays. I just flashed the stock recovery 5.20 but for some reason I cannot update or download any apps from the Google Play Store. I keep getting error 963. I searched how to fix this but nothing has worked.
Anyone else been able to fix this?
