Motorola says what 1080p recording
Can someone actually sue them for this? Doubt it.
Future updates = most likely you won't get it and we don't give a **** either
At least the devs are half way there, sort of..
Anyone actually hear any different because that's the word I got straight from moto.
they did say its coming, didnt say in which particular update. They did say that in this one that just came out will come hsupa and they delivered. So just wait, patience.

We would rather want to refrain from suing them and force them getting things in place.
They said all the missing features will be corrected with updates, they didn't have a list at the time of announcing them...
Just be patient is a better option for us as Devs hard at cracking the boot loader will definitely come up with a solution faster than Motorola does. This phone is pretty much brand new player in market... Phone eventually hopefully be updated to either Gingerbread officially or Devs will get some ROM up and running... regardless, give or take about 6 months more to go...
Wait and pray... not to god... To all the Devs hard at work...

Motorola Milestone was advertised with flash. People complained, and eventually Froyo was released.
Moto support forums is the best place to bring this to their attention...

What I thought we were getting was not 1080p recording, but 1080p playback. This would allow playing of 1080p movies in hi def displays through the entertainment center. As usual, I am more likely wrong though.

We should be getting both.

I had 1080 working with LG camera, i believe the chip supports 30 fps 720, 23 fps 1080. When it records in it, it looks like 1080, but its choppy. If it wasnt id be using LG camera for everything, but the sound cuts out sometimes. Its good for a nature scene, slow moving, lots of detail, little distortion. 720 for fast action, nice colors and sound
TLDR: What andrew1234abc said.
I'm currently running 1.5.7 and the lgcamera app, and have 1080p videos from it. It wasn't particularly easy, and they aren't particularly pretty, but it does work.
My settings are 1920x1080 resolution, default vid encoder, 3gpp video file format, 13Mbit video bitrate, and 30 video framerate. Audio settings of default. I never did figure out which setting(s) was giving me trouble, but had problems until I landed on this setup and just left these ever since.
Not sure why this works or why they haven't updated our camera software. Obviously the hardware is there and just waiting for the lazy asses at moto to slap a GUI on it. Oh well, I think I like the LG interface a lot more anyways.
Also, it looks like I have been using this since 4/11 so it worked in 1.2.6 as well. Cant confirm 1.8.3, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
Attached is the vitals on the file produced by LGCamera. Like I said, not perfect, but if you are dying for 1080p it looks like our only choice right now.

I love how everyone refers to the plain and simple "devs" like there's some office building filled with "devs" and they sit there and work on cracking the bootloader and doing stuff to phones. We don't have that many developers for the Atrix. And the developers are just regular people that decided to take action and work to make the phones we use better instead of just sitting around and waiting for the "devs" to do something. This is no complaint, it just makes me LOL. Haha and capitalize Devs and not God why dontcha LOL

It was mentioned in all press releases ever since the CES. Obviously its not written on the box for a reason.
I was kidding about the suing. I love my atrix but does it really take over 4 months for a real company to do a small updated they kept talking about forever.
I'm on Bell so lol at my getting any updates anyway.

Actually it was on the official spec early.
Even if it did come it probably be half-assed anyway at 24fps or lower.

If you go to the official spec that the story references:
http://mediacenter.motorola.com/Fact-Sheets/Motorola-ATRIX-4G-Fact-Sheet-353b.aspx (note this page is dated Jan 5)
You will see it never mentions 1080P recording - anywhere. It says:
HD 1080 p capable
Capture – 720p MPEG4 and H.264 at 30 fps
Playback – 1080p MPEG4, H.264, WMV, Xvid at 30 fps
(Playback through HDMI is 720p at launch and will be upgraded to 1080p via SW upgrade post-launch)
Streaming – VGA in MPEG4, H.264, H.263 at 30 fps
I am waiting for anyone to show where it ever said 1080p capture or recording - I have never seen this anywhere on an official spec. Only speculation or mis-interpretation.
I did see a screen capture in one of those early articles, my guess is that it was later changed, and is no longer in the plans.

I've been playing around with LGcamera app myself for a bit.
I find the stock 720p looks better than the 1080p on whatever setting you use with LG. What settings did you find look the best with 720p?
I think I've only took one video that looked decent, everything else looks kind of average. Very grainy. Idk, maybe I'm expecting too much from a phone. lol
You are correct - people misread the original note and then as often happens on the internet the idea got out of control. The idea was to implement 1080p playback (I'm guessing to external devices), not 1080p recording. But the sheeple hopped on the bandwagon and now we get threads like this...

It's a little more complex than that. It was originally stated we would get 1080P capture and the Motorola Page used to say this in the official specs.
The image in the screen in this story is what the specs page used to look like before Moto switched it all up: (http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/28/motorola-will-enable-atrix-4gs-1080p-video-recording-in-post-la/)
Long, short- Motorola promised it and reneged in a low key way.
EDIT: Now that I think more about it, search this forum and you will probably find the post of the user who first noticed that the specs page changed.
Why is it that no one has reported that the 4k resolution on the Z5 premium is only 4k when playing or filming 4k video. At all other times i.e 99% of the time, the device has normal resolution. I think its misleading by Sony regarding the way they have advertised the product. If I buy a 4k phone as Sony has described the Z5 premium, I am more interested in my home screen, normal apps and text messages etc being 4k resolution rather that the ability to film 4k video. Its not that I need such resolution for these but merely the principle.
So you'd rather have a battery that will last you for half the day? Because there's no way around it that the Premium is the first 4K phone, and Sony really played it smart where it won't be a flop by adding smart software that enables 4K when it's needed.
No I'd rather Sony did not push the Z5 as a 4k phone when it isn't. I would have bought it for the screen size alone. The BS about it being a native 4k screen is poor customer service. If battery will be an issue they should have put a bigger battery in. it's thick enough.
What I am also puzzled about are all these journalists with their previews and hands on reviews stating how the screen is great or that they can't tell the difference from a normal phone. Did these chumps not know that's because it isn't a 4k screen most of the time.
They did put 4k resolution hardware they just did not used due to fact that it is little difference or make no difference on 2k. Their might be possible to to change resolution if you root and develop ui.

That's really no different than a 4k TV.
Unless you're watching specific 4k content on your TV, you are looking at 1080p/720p resolution. User interfaces on 4k TVs generally aren't 4k because there is no point. That dosen't make the screen NOT 4k, or the Z5P's screen NOT 4k. It's just that you have to be watching 4k content to actually see it at the proper resolution. That's how all 4k devices are, and they are all advertised as 4k, and rightfully so.
I mean I don't know what you expect... you want the browser/texting to be 4k? What's the point of UHD aside from watching videos? None of the websites you visit will be in 4k aside from when you're watching videos. Sony did the right thing here in utilizing the 4k screen for videos/pictures. There would be no point in having a 4k home screen since it would just drain a ton of battery
Are the journalists reading this site or is it a coincidence that articles about the lack of 4k on the Z5 premium now start to roll out a few days after my post. Am surprised this was not reported on day 1.
interesting

Your point is absolutely no-point. The phone is 4K phone because it has native 4K display. That the UI (applications etc.) are not native 4K is just because there is absolutely no point rendering user interface at 4K. The point is that th phone is capable of natively displaying 4K content. User Interface is not 4K content and there is a good reason behind it.
How about this article? Does it help?
http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_z5_premium_4k_display_under_our_microscope-blog-13887.php
My point is that 4k TV/video is not here yet. There is no content. So the 4k video feature is pointless. I don't give a monkeys about the ability to record or view 4k video.
However what a 4k screen provides is better overall picture quality. Whilst the improved ppi will not be noticeable, 4k produces better colours and brightness. This is the feature of the 4k screen that I would be interested in. At the end of the day the Z5 premium is no better than my current Z3. It definitely looks uglier than the Z3.
Funny thing is, Nobody ever complained when their phone's CPU are running on 600mhz on idle when the spec sheet is 2.3Ghz. smh

Seems you don't get my /s implicitly there.. :/ the 4K situation looks a lot like CPU speed. It can be pushed to max but it doesn't have to be activated all the time. But here we are, people are complaining for such reserve as a drawback.

Uhh what? There absolutely is 4k content. In fact, I'm watching Breaking Bad in 4k on Netflix as we speak. Lots of major streaming services are getting 4k content and there is more and more every day.
Are you upset that TV manufacturers are advertising TV's as 4K even though most content watched will currently be 1080p/720p? The TV UI's are generally not 4K. How is that different?
And just like TV's, Sony has claimed that the phone will upscale 1080p content, so it should produce better color and brightness, although who knows how noticeable it will be w/ such a small screen?
We always can see whether the panel is 4K by playing a 4K video from youtube. Like it should give the option to switch between the qualities, Am I not right?

Read this, son. It will play 4K and will UPSCALE image/video content to 4K, along with the other image/video enhancements. That's the focus of the phone, a "premium" viewing experience. The UI will remain 1080p to preserve battery life, because who the hell cares about the image quality of the freakin' UI? Same goes for apps and games, unless (maybe) the game actually comes with 4K resolution, which I doubt there are for now when consoles still struggle with 1080p.
It indeed 4K panel. only uses for Media and stuff.

Watching random vids on skyrim tonight and came across this one. Noticed the weird letter box affect i was getting than noticed it's actually " full screen" screen shot for proof and video link also.. What are everyone's thoughts on why this happens and how to make it do it all the time.
Many old youtube videos i can watch at full screen.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNwWkNBOqIg
For example, this one was uploaded when Youtube introduced new aspect ratio 7 years ago.
There are many videos in this 2:1 aspect ratio though.
18:9 videos and wider formats (21:9 for instance) are displayed full screen on the G6, but only if they are properly encoded format-wise. Many are not, unfortunately.
16:9 clips appear with vertical bars, that's how it's supposed to be, unless you fancy picture distortions. But YouTube doesn't allow any right now.
Theres an update coming soon to Youtube and it's supposedly adding proper 18:9 playback and 1080+1440p 60fps support.

Yeah I knew that was coming with the note 8 and the gs8 having the same display and possibly the iPhone. Just really hope it doesn't include letterbox. I mean even our phones don't record 18:9 , 2:1 so the video player is stretching them to fill the screen. Minimal loss of quality never noticeable
Using latest version of YouTube (v12.25.54) but no option for displaying 18:9 format

My bad!what i want to says 2k not 4k.
Btw my complain is still valid g6 don't support 2k at 60fps.
I'm creating a bounty for enabling native 2K or preferably 4K.
The resolution/dpi emulation still does nothing more than resize the xxhdpi resources (not even the xxxhdpi), so it still isn't as good quality as 2K displays on other phones.
Moreover, VR (the only real purpose for a 4K phone) is terrible. True, the screen door effect is gone, but at the cost of blurry less defined images same as a 1080p phone. Only Youtube and finally Netflix are able to use the 4K but other apps and games are unable to use the higher 2K resources and downloaded VR movies are fuzzy. Completely disappointing compared to my 2K phone. Also, with the emulated 2K or 4K, Daydream becomes tiny in the bottom center of the screen.
I believe the kernel controls the screen properties, but not sure if there was something to do with it in the ROM for this phone. While I'm sure I could figure it out with all of the easy handy guides, I don't really have time to do the research on how to do it myself. So, I'm creating this bounty.
I'll start with committing $50 to the person who releases the first stable one, but still donate to a second placer
If anyone else would like to sweeten this pot please post how much you would contribute.
I think it's a problem of native 4k apps, not the phone.
You can put it in 2,4k using adb commands, search here https://forum.xda-developers.com/xz-premium/themes/mod-change-default-resolution-to-4k-root-t3618843, but you need apps for that. I have Bobo VR Z5 and it's working perfect in 4k and in 1080p, but only without screen protector.

The adb command is just emulating 4K with the lower resolution resources as said in my top post.
This is how Daydream looks in emulated 4K https://drive.google.com/open?id=1i531VadSbzzu1Or1CMMvBYez5VFi_Mkp
I'm sure without the screen door effect you may feel you're getting 4K VR, but it actually 1080p.
For example, I take 4K 360° photos. the text on distant signs is readable on my 2K phone, but not on this XZP.
Awesome! Hoping this will attract devs to look into this.

For example, I take 4K 360° photos. the text on distant signs is readable on my 2K phone, but not on this XZP.

have you also noticed the 1080p in it is not as sharp as other 1080p phones?
ive seen it against the z5 and and some galaxy phones, its just not as crisp even on 4k mode using adb commands...
how can we fix this?

It's pretty sharp. It's better in emulated 2k/4k, but good enough for 1080p. At least for me.
Also just to add, I noticed that if you use GMD Gesture Control and calibrate the screen, you'll see that the app reads the screen as 4k. (Even when on stock wm size)
$50 is laughable
get 10 guys together, $500 would probably interest someone

That's the point of this bounty. I asked people if the wanted to sweeten the pot and how much they'd be willing to contribute.
How much are you in for?

That app probably reads the pixel size rather than the set resolution. AIDA64 also reads as 4K the first time, but later shows 1080x1920 or whatever emulated size you set.
When doing the Daydream fix, it also changes the screen from LCD to AMOLED.

true that but even when on emulated 4k you get just as good display as 1080p, its still even not as crisp as other 1080p but cant tell difference, still with emulated 4k just to look at "enhanced" 1080p sucks!
plus you lose more battery than native 2k phones! i bought the phone because of its screen and I cant enjoy 4k at all times, or at least in the UI or any other app that I want in 4k....
im disappointed i really wish there is a fix to get native 4k...
I AM willing to throw in a 50$ as well if some one fixed this (as long as there is a root with TA backup (just in case the fix needs root to modify the kernel- I dont wanna lose DRM functions)

Excellent, and totally agree!
Now the bounty is up to $100.
Let's get more people. We can't be the only ones disappointed that Sony sold us a 4K phone *only in 2-3 apps that is actually locked at 1080p.
Could it be possible to just make other apps 4k by heavily editing them? Like the VR apps. If doing it system wide is too difficult then maybe editing apps might be easier.
I'm curious anyway, who can actually tell the difference between 1080p and 4k on this phone? You say 1080p looks better on other phones, so does the 4k look just as sharp as that 1080p? Also, how do we know Sony isn't just using the emulated 4k when it gets enabled? Not every photo in the album is 4k so how would it enable?
I did take a 1080p photo and a 4k photo and noticed a difference but I wasn't convinced. It didn't seem like a huge difference like it does against a TV/monitor at 4k. Especially on YouTube I cannot see the difference majorly when going from 1080p to 4k but can others? If 4k is difficult to make happen then maybe we could push 120hz at 1080p since it was said that the X series of devices have 120hz displays it's just disabled for some reason. The page needs translating but it shows 1080p at 120hz as an option. This was mentioned in a previous thread but I don't think anyone was interested in it. I think that this has a higher chance since this image exists.
Thats my thoughts about 4k on this device anyway. I think at this point 120hz might be a better option but that's just my opinion. 4k is great but it's only limited at the moment.

here is the thing, true that its very hard to tell the difference between 1080p and 4k on such small screen, so I took screenshots of before and after 4k mod and placed them together on my 24 inch monitor side by side and still can barely tell the difference even on huge screen which proves that its not 4 times better quality so its really fake 4k!! only time i can realize the difference is when i zoom in on both pictures and see that some details are washed out and more "pixel" looking at 1080p while on 4k mod still manages to show more details but then again, such difference in sharpness and detail shouldnt be so hard to notice since on my monitor I can easilyyy tell a difference between 1080p and 4k gaming on my VSR (virtual supper resolution) even virtually on my screen modded 4k has a lot more difference that stock 1080p
while even modded 4k on this device can barely show a difference, so might as well change that in a native way I really cant wait for a fix
PS: running 1080p on 1080p screen looks better than running 1080p on 4K screen (if screens are same size) - proven.
so down scaling the 4K screen of this device to 1080 will make it look worse than other native 1080p screen which buggs me, the least they could have done is add an option like samsung did to just adjust the quality as you wish... I hope they add that in the next update
Yes I agree 1080p on a 4k screen does look worse. On most TVs it doesn't but on my Acer predator 28" 4k monitor it is very noticeable that 1080p looks like 720p when duplicating the screen next to my 1080p monitor. The desktop does look noticeably blurrier. However, 1080p content on the 4k monitor doesn't show a huge difference so I'm not sure what that's about only playing games and the desktop look bad at 1080p. Maybe the XZ1 could have been a better option but even still know that I have the second 4k mobile device on the planet and the only 4k HDR device is still cool. It's certified to be 4k so it can't possibly be a fake 4k it has to be really 4k else Sony would be lying and with all those TV experts I don't think it wouldn't be possible for them to do real 4k on a smartphone.
The screen using the emulated 4k is razor sharp. By far sharper than any other phone I've used including the note 8. Are you sure your not just mistaking the overly unrealistic saturation of a amoled screen compared to a LCD one? I dont mean that in a sarcastic way, i genuinely dont see any comparison between the two. I havnt used the phone for any VR stuff though so can't comment on that

you are right but im not comparing only with samsung, also with HTC and the previous version of xperia , the Z3
yes maybe on emulated 4k it has sharper screen but keep in mind that on 1080 is not as sharp as other 1080p, even on 2k it isnt only on 4k mode it is unbeatable which to add is emulated and not native
put phone on 2k battery dies so much faster than lets say samsung or HTC which both have same CPU GPU and almost same battery size, how is that? because the resolution is emulated, which forces GPU to resize source resolution of 1080p to make it in a fake way look like 4k instead of showing native 4k (which doesnt require such hard work from GPU as its showing real pixels instead of emulating fake pixels!) Which leads to less over heating and less battery consumption.
heck even on 1080p screen looks worse and still get worse battery life than other phones...
thats what bothers

not exactly but some other phones have better 1080p than the 1080p on this device, yes text and symbols maybe just as sharp its hard to tell but im talking about pictures (for example, in instagram, facebook. youtube thumbnails etc...) I once was on 4k mode and it was very hard to tell the difference between this phone and the Z3 and even some times the z3 showed more picture details in instagram and its only 1080p...
im not complaining about the screen though, its pretty decent and with 4k mod on it looks superb, im just saying sony has put some thing in a device that is useless and im trying to figure out why...
by useless i mean sony left us no option to use such settings, why dont they add the options of 1080-120hz or 4k? naive and not emulated! this bugs me
and yes it is 4k, just like youtube you dont have to watch on 4k settings, but you can see the option is there which means it supports it.
that means even if you dont have a 4k video in your video app or album app, the option is there that means if you ever have a 4k video on there the device will play it at its maximum resolution.
phones that dont support 4k will show that the video looks as sharp as 1080 instead of real 4k
Just curious. I recently updated my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 to the Android Pie Resurrection rom and it plays Youtube vids in 1080p. So it's pretty nice.
u probably could, but the max resolution of the rn7 screen is still only 1080p, so there will be absolutely no difference in the experience of watching the content. you'd probably be wasting data downloading those extra pixels anyway.

Yea, that's a good point. I mean I only game on my desktop at 1080p. It's weird, if you have seen some of my posts, lately I have been having memory issues and the inability to understand things technically. I have been very heavily involved/online since 1985 in a dev sense but later in life more as an enthusiast. I don't know what's up. I'm only fifty and this is beginning to scare me. LOL
Thanks for the reply, NightRaven!
You could (especially with YouTube Vanced), but just like what NightRaven said, RN7 max resolution is 1080p so yea
