Watching random vids on skyrim tonight and came across this one. Noticed the weird letter box affect i was getting than noticed it's actually " full screen" screen shot for proof and video link also.. What are everyone's thoughts on why this happens and how to make it do it all the time.
Many old youtube videos i can watch at full screen.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNwWkNBOqIg
For example, this one was uploaded when Youtube introduced new aspect ratio 7 years ago.
There are many videos in this 2:1 aspect ratio though.
18:9 videos and wider formats (21:9 for instance) are displayed full screen on the G6, but only if they are properly encoded format-wise. Many are not, unfortunately.
16:9 clips appear with vertical bars, that's how it's supposed to be, unless you fancy picture distortions. But YouTube doesn't allow any right now.
Theres an update coming soon to Youtube and it's supposedly adding proper 18:9 playback and 1080+1440p 60fps support.

Yeah I knew that was coming with the note 8 and the gs8 having the same display and possibly the iPhone. Just really hope it doesn't include letterbox. I mean even our phones don't record 18:9 , 2:1 so the video player is stretching them to fill the screen. Minimal loss of quality never noticeable
Using latest version of YouTube (v12.25.54) but no option for displaying 18:9 format

You said the edge supports 4k at 60fps. Which is false assuming you're talking about youtube playback resolutions.

Hi guys, I see a lot of GB roms mentioning YouTubeHD, yet I can't seem to get it to work, I get the HQ button that's always been there, but not 720p, any ideas?
Well, mobile HQ isn't 720p either. I don't see why you would want 720p in the first place, your phone doesn't have that many lines?

I'm quite aware of both of those things, but it has been mentioned that YouTube works in hd for the HD2 running Gingerbread. And I know from my own testing that a 720p encoded movie looks a lot nicer on the HD2 than a 800x480 encoded movie.
Uhm I haven't heard of any of that, and Google doesn't hint anything in that direction either, I think you're confusing some stuff. A lot of roms support 720p playback, but not in Youtube.
720p in se doesn't look beter than a 480p video by the way, on the contrary. You don't see the lines your screen can't show, and actually this may even result in a slightly worse video because of it.
A well encoded 480p video is at least as good as a 720p video, problem is that a lot 480p conversions suck. But that's not because it's 480p, it's because of the conversion.
That's why I don't think we'll ever have 720p mobile video. It's just wasted bandwidth over a nicely encoded 480p.
Oh, and I think Youtube HD just refers to the revamped app. Not 100% sure though so don't quote me on that.

Totally 100% agree. There would be more chance of performance issues with a downscaled 720 video on a 480 screen. It DOES NOT look better than a properly encoded 480 video. It is not physically possible for it to look better as your screen cannot show anything more than 480 pixels in each of the 800 columns. End of.

I bought myself a Note 3(N9005, 32GB version) few days ago, but since the beginning I have had a problem with recording 4K videos. To be exact, it doesn't record at the promised 45-50 mbps bitrate, instead it records at 10 mbps or even lesser bitrate. So my question would be, how can I fix that?
All the other featured modes are working flawlessly. Would really appreciate some help. The phone is not rooted or customized in any way.
Thanks in advance!

Yes, under the video resolution section I chose 3840x2160. Is there supposed to be some more options to improve the quality?

Do you have a 4k TV if not you won't see any difference between 4k then 1080p
^ um WRONG. And that has nothing to do with this topic

Downscaled 4K looks much better though, so there is a huge benefit in making 4K videos. Anyway it seems like those crappy units of Note 3-s made their way only to Estonia, since me and shizny are both from Estonia and there is no more information about that problem on the internet, atleast I couldn't find absolutely nothing on such weirdness.
Actually jaythenut is correct. Though the Note 3 is capable of recording video for playback on a 4K TV your device having only a 1080p display is not going to appear different at all.
The Note 3 plays back recorded 4K Video in 1080p on both the phone and any other playable media device as it can't process anything higher than that.
Your better off recording videos in 1080p at the now 60f/s.

no one is right.
quality of recorded videos playback is not the same as seen on youtube, by other peeps recordings.
check the quality, bitrate of 4K recorded video on my device is 6000kbps, 1080p is 15000kbps.
If you think a little logically then how come 4K recorded video is worse than 1080p? Even the playback quality is worse, not only on the device itself, but also on monitor.
Have you ever watched 1080p video on 720 display? Any difference? Video is crispy and detailed, Now how about 520p video on 1080p screen?
Now this is the same as my 4K recording on 1080p screen.
Either the device is faulty and cannot record/play 4K videos or sample videos made on youtube are actually 1080p.
This is really strange. I'm from Estonia as well and I'm facing the exact same problems. All my 4K videos look like 240p ones or even worse.
(Can't post the full YT links because of my postcount, but here's the v-codes)
watch?v=4iEt7lGGPqk- 4K sample
watch?v=4fryaJ6cfw4 - 1080p sample for comparison
I can't find anything on the internet regarding this subject, does anyone have any idea what the hell is going on? I sent an email to Samsung support about this as well.
the same problem here (lithuania), firmware N9005XXUBMJ1
Wait for while there will b some patches to fix it.all devices havr same problem
Same here. 4K recording quality (and, of course, bitrate) is awful. Videos looks like 240p.
Lithuania, baseband N9005XXUBMJ1.
EDIT: Ok, it seems that this is common issue with particular batch of this model (maybe it only affects the Baltic countries), and service centers are aware of this problem.

Did the service center tell you what was the problem?
I was wondering if there was some sort of video upscaling present when videos of a lower resolution like 720p and 1080p videos are played. I mean, there's not much point in a QHD screen if even 1080p videos are pixelated, right?
What do you mean? They have to be upscaled, how else would you want to watch them? In a small window? 720p should upscale without any quality loss (1 pixel becomes 4 pixels), 1080p should look great too but with a slight, probably not noticable at such small screen size quality loss.
1080p videos look great on my Tab S 8.4 i don't see any reason why they wouldn't on the Note 4.
Sorry. Yeah, I mean lossless upscaling.

Lossless...?
Relative to the 1080p, sure, it's lossless as you don't lose any resolution from 1080p. Relative to 1440p? Well, in that case of course you lose resolution if the source video isn't 1440p.
Sorry, I'm not too sure what you mean by lossless.
Looks like I've been doing a shoddy job of explaining myself. Sorry about that.
I know that this may sound completely retarded, but what I meant to ask was this : Does the Note 4 have the same type of upscaling that is present in 4K televisions?
Hi guys, since i searched all over the forum, i can't seem to find much or any full downloadable 4K samples, before i thought the YT ones looked good, but after downloading one in full ress non compressed ~ 50mbp/s instead of crappy 20 mbp/s youtube ones, i know understand that it does look ever better. Si i thought we can use this tread, in order to share personal footage, and full res/raw pictures if possible, thanks!
Since i don't own the phone yet, i will share my videos/pics later on, please do share i want to make a small collection, thanks!

Ok so question.....the nexus 6 is out already. You think Google took off the feature on our note 4 just to bring it out on the nexus 6??? I wonder if nexus 6 owners can get 4K?
not likely; its a bandwidth issue, so I cant imagine any phone version of youtube getting any 4k videos any time soon
google doesnt want the bandwidth being sucked up by people who need to watch youtube videos in 4k on a 5 inch screen...

So in this video I used a tripod which took some amazing video. But I also took 4k video while driving (I was not driving) and the camera did a good job at keeping a still video. There was still a lot of movement but it shows less in the video then there actually was. I captured mainly movement to see how the camera could keep up with it.

Do you know if the 4k video was encoded with the native h.265 encoder rather than the older h.264? The exynos soc supports native h.265 encode / decode which should help with 4k video size.

Here is a utility that can show you details about your media file. Just point it to the raw video file that was generated by the s6. By the time it gets uploaded to youtube, it is transcoded so no way to tell the native encode format prior to the conversion on youtube.
One of the strong features of the new chips, including the 810 are it's ability to natively encode and decode h.265. This is remarkable as even intel chips cannot completely hw encode+decode the new format. The newer nvidia/amd cards are making progress towards h.265. So I hope you can appreciate that little device in your hands can do this. But whether it actually does and makes use of it is the question. I hope you indulge us.
The quality of the focus is amazing.
