Problem with Phoenix OS on a Lenovo X1 Tablet - Phoenix OS News, Q&A & Development

I have been a Remix OS user for a while, and I love it, but decided to try Phoenix OS on my new X1! So far, I am not too impressed. Installation went smoothly, but unlike Remix, the OS is not pre-rooted. I was able to easily do that by reading another post on this forum, however! I like the idea that it is Android 7.1.1, but I am having the following problems:
1. The laptop restarts itself randomly while booted into it. Works fine while in Windows 10.
2. The screen will not auto rotate. I am getting some odd error on the Grub4dos screen at startup, but is goes by too quickly to see what it says, and the letters are too small. I have a feeling Phoenix has a problem with the hardware in the X1 that controls the screen position, but that is just a theory. The tablet seems to only auto start when it is moved.
3. The camera does not work. This is no real big deal, but nevertheless, it no workee!
4. Like Remix, you cannot install another launcher.
I am going to play with it a little more, but think I will just go back to Remix. The only other alternative I see is Android x86, but I am having problems finding clear instructions on how to install it. Is anybody else experiencing any of these problems on their devices?
Edit: Android x86 is not an option. I found easy instructions, but it does not support the Android Market, or Playstore.

Apparently RemixOS is not an option for the X1 either! It installs, but then just sticks at the "Android x86" screen and will not boot into it. I have removed both from the tablet. I just updated the tabs BIOS, so I may give PhoenixOS one more shot!

Nexus7 MultiROM multiboot roms test status

I have tried all presently available prepackaged Linux roms for Nexus7 under MultiROM environment. The result is not so satisfactory.
BodhiLinux: boots and runs smoothly, but has some strange bug in the mouse pointer: it seems the pointer is reflectional symmetric with the tap point on the screen, the reflection center is the center of the screen. This makes it extremely difficult to focus the current line of cursor while inputing.
ArchLinux: initially I downloaded a wrong package, with file type being tar.gz and get lost while installing. After rechecking the download site I got the correct image and made a successful installation. However, booting into Arch I end up with a black console screen with login prompt but cannot input anything there because there is no on screen keyboard.
Web OS: this guy installs and runs smoothly, but I am totally lost on the interface of this system. I know this isn't Linux, but besides the web app I found almost nothing useful in the system. I cannot find any reason running such a system instead of the default Android.
Ubuntu: at first this system runs, with frequent sluggish and warnings of problems. I thought more recent builds may improve the behavior and so tried the latest builds. Unfortunately, the new builds just boot into black screen with no responce to whatever operations. Hope this will be cured soon because the earlier partially working build feels that this should be THE CHOICE of all these systems.
I hope this information is useful to those wish to test other systems on their N7.

And I forgot to say something about Plasma. This system runs and looks promising, the Plasma Activity interface looks beautiful but feels alion to me as a twenty year user of Linux. Booting takes veeeery long, and sometimes the screen goes black and unrespontive. Anyway worth a try.

Another Rom/OS

Hello everyone,
I was wondering if there is another Rom or OS available for the Remix Ultratablet. I tried looking for one, but wasn't able to find one.
And if there isn't is there a possibillity to get Windows to this tablet, or some kind of Linux distro?
I'm just not a fan of Remix OS. It's filled with bugs and doesn't work properly. Something as simple as resetting the tablet doesn't even work great. The keyboard doesn't let me give accents to letters if I need to, which is very annoying when actually using the tablet for school/work.
I really hope there is someone can help me out.
I'm also wondering this. I like the idea of Remix OS but its execution leaves much to be desired. I wish there was a stock Android image, or CyanogenMod or something similar. I don't think this tablet can handle Windows 10, though.

Try External Keyboard Helper Pro, but yes a CM12.1/13.0 would be great

Have you tried control key combinations? Used to have a table that ctrl + key would give accents, but maybe not applicable here.
are you all updated to version 2.0?
i was not impressed at first, until i updated the system software. the difference between 1.5 and 2.0 was for me like night and day. so much nicer, faster, smoother, better looking, more logical.
it took me a while to figure out i hadtrun software update twice -- once to the last version of 1. 5, and then again to get to 2.0.
if you haven't already, use system update before deciding you hate remix.

I'm on 2.0 and it's worse than 1.5. No option to let background services run, worse battery life, app UI's that are stuck in phone version instead of tablet, no 5 GHz connections, it's just a mess. The main UI may look prettier but none of us signed up for Remix to gawk at a pretty homescreen. We want stuff to work and work well and currently (and since the beginning) Jide has not delivered on that front, in fact relegating us original backers to the back of the line while the Mini and PC OS's get all the love. It's ridiculous. I almost feel like I was scammed.
did u put the apps in fullscreen mode? I'm getting 5ghz wifi. can access ur router settings? can it see the tablet?
that is why you shouldn't by a pc stuck at one OS. the same applies to chromebooks, microsoft surface RT and so on. you could simply buy a normal laptop and install remix os on it later if you wanted. Try to sell it or whatever. Remix os on PC is still non usable as well.

Sorry for the late reply, but yes to all three. A majority of the apps, at first glance, work relatively correct when set to fullscreen, but many also have one of two problems: one, they run in landscape/tablet mode but the UI is still like that of a phone (narrow, centered menus and either tiny or huge on-screen elements and such), or two, the app runs exclusively in portrait mode when fullscreen and cut off halfway when windowed. Even apps that run in tablet mode, when examined carefully, are really running in a stretched-out phone mode.
About 5 GHz WiFi, it worked perfectly for about 2-3 weeks then one day it just stopped working. It sees the network but has no "bars" and refuses to even acknowledge it when I tap it.

I need you to take photos/videos of the fullscreen issue and send it in thru the Jide support form. I'm having the same issue with 5ghz too but I think its the router cause we have two and it can see the 5ghz on the other one.. i'm doing some experiments this weekend.
Can you tell me what router you are using?
Your Jide Ambassador is here!!!
Try putting 5ghz on a different channel on ur router. Like channel 44 or something if u are in the USA.

Not really a "new" OS, but I've been fooling around with Linux on the Ultratablet. I have been using the Complete Linux Installer (from the Play store) and have been able to run Linux. Obviously it is not as fast as if it would be a native app, but it runs surprisingly well.
Wish there was a way to flash it like a new ROM or dual boot it like I do with Windows 10, but it's better than Remix.
Hey,
I'm also interested to install another rom in the ultratablet from jide.
I find remix os pretty limited and now it's pretty clear that the support team is not supporting at all the ultratablet, but much more their remis os software.
Also I think this is fairly stupid but they won't even let me install another type of launcher! I'd love to just use google launcher or anything else. Why can't I do that. I was very disapointed that the remis os team wouldn't let us do that or root their system to use the hardware with another rom.
very very very disapointed so if anyone can help me root and install another rom I would be VERY interested!
ps : Same thing here with the accents on letters, there'S simply no support for let's say "canadian french" keyboard unless I pay for a lame keyboard helper app on google play.

Maybe it would be possible to load Phoenix os on the ultratablet ???

Rooting is VERY easy. Download SuperSU from the market and put it on your external SD card or the emulated SD card. Search through the forums for the Cyanogen recovery for the tablet and then install it via fastboot. Once installed boot into recovery and "Apply update" (SuperSU) and reboot. That's about it and you are rooted. IF someday Jide produces a patch, you can unroot via the SU app apply the patch and then root again. I would NOT hold my breath waiting for an update from Jide but if it ever happens you have the means to use it.
Phoenix OS does not support the Jide tablet and looks like they would have to rework their OS to support Jide.
Good luck.
Ok I'll try that and post details if this works, but do you have any idea how to fastboot on the ultratablet?? Usually it's a combination of power+vol up or down but never the same thing depending on the model and maker of the tablet/phone.
thks

Easy way is to enter the command "adb reboot bootloader" then you can use fastboot to flash the recovery. Once you have that you can use "adb reboot recovery" to bring up the new recovery and install the SuperSU and then reboot.

Working android build.

Hi all. Your android solution may be here. I have installed most of the recent android builds available. The below build from konstakang has worked and for me has a good functionality and minimal crashes so far.
http://konstakang.com/devices/rpi3/CM14.1/
I have tried the more recent Oreo 15.1 build but this one has a better display performance. There is a bug with not being able to change the wallpaper but will check with konstakang how to get working.
I tried the build before looking into over clocking but a revisit greatly improved performance and less lag by editing config.txt. Accessed config.txt from a root search via Nautilus after flashing the downloaded image via etcher. Only added
force_turbo=1 #Voids Warranty!
boot_delay=1 #helps to avoid sdcard corruption when force_turbo is enabled.
I didn’t go any further with over clocking as this seems to make the difference. Not seen the CPU temp more than 70c yet. Check out the below link.
https://haydenjames.io/raspberry-pi-3-overclock/
Finally to get things up and running no need for the play store at all so I wouldn’t even bother. It only causes major crashes and Aptoide is sufficient. I have root access from the settings menu and have downloaded quick root reboot. Chrome and Showbox along with mx player. All working. CPUx gives stats such as core temp. Will be able to get terminal access also from app download. The media apps do seem to shutdown occasionally but i hope a wifi dongle upgrade add-on will sort this out.
http://en.aptoide.com
Hope this helps someone and let me know if have the same or different luck. Big up to the developers and website authors!
I tried the 8-10-17 build, and I could any apps I installed would crash immediately. I could not get the resolution to fit my TV screen either after changing resolutions in the boot config. Have you ran into any issues like this?
I had problems with older builds from the same source and others. Even paid for one from Exton but he's a rip off merchant. Try this one that I had in the op.
http://konstakang.com/devices/rpi3/CM14.1/
Read the FAQ about root access and download quick reboot from Aptoide.
As I said it works reasonably well. Try the over clocking and apps from Aptoide. Also reboot a couple times I've read makes a difference with things crashing. If you find an app continuously crashes then uninstall and try different one.
My TV displays fine. 49inch 4k. I guess if yours doesn't from first boot then could Google for the correct config.txt script. This newer build seems to detect the TV resolution but don't quote me on that.
I wouldn't go for the newer konstakang Oreo build as was laggy but of course give it a go if you like. Konstakang builds seem to be the best on the net so far and I've tried loads since the new year. See what the next one is like as well as he's pretty up on current development.
is this a stretch img?
Not sure what you mean by stretch?
I'm guessing this is also for the RPi 3B+?
This was done on the pi3b. I don't know if it's works on the newest model.
Stops bootlogo n shuts down
First boots situation
Flashed with etcher

How do I make this tablet usable again?

I feel like I've tried everything to make this thing work, but every time I use it it locks up almost immediately (as in screen freezes, takes 15 seconds to register touches, sometimes not at all, won't load apps). Right now I'm on SHIELD software version 4.1 (Android 6.0.1) and I just want to use it as a glorified web browser, but it can't even do that. I've tried factory resets, reflashes, tips on the NVIDIA forums... is there any way to identify what slows my tablet down and prevent it? Even on a fresh install its laggy/borderline unusable.
Yep it's a real P.O.S.
It never really was any good.
I fired it up a while ago, fresh factory reset, and still couldn't even hardly browse the internet.
I'm on los14 and it's fine for me. I use the smallest gapps and I also remove the apps I don't use in /system...everything I use works and I don't have any problems with it.

I have been on the same quest as you. Lineage 14.1 was the answer for me for a long time. However, today I have found something even better. I have also tested EVERYTHING so when I say its good, its good. ASOP 5.8 with NANO GAPPS is a smoker! Even when typing there is no hesitation. Everything is quick quick. I downloaded the version with z-ram. I don't know how much that helps. I have used z-ram in other ROMs and it didn't seam to help. So, I would say its just user preference. I have not tested the regular 5.8 yet so try the z-ram one. I think you will love it as much as I do. There is only one bug. It is with NVIDIA Games. It gives you an error that it stopped running. All you have to do is update it in the playstore and it will stop saying that. I hope this helps!

Hi. I am selling my Shield Tablet + Controller.
Would come inkl. the recalled from nvidia which i resoldered the Battery. I didnt write that in ebay because i didnt want to get banned because of the recall.
just ebay : Nvidia-Shield-Tablet-and-Controller-2016
I where thinking on selling mine as well... But honestly, will it worth selling?
How much do you ask for the tablet and controller combo?
Well, after disabling doze and the srgb mode, and making sure all programs were updated and that I had plenty of free space (>1GB of ram with nothing open and >1.5GB of disk)... I must say I'm pretty satisfied again with the device.
I don't even see anymore that stupid constant >50% IOW activity inside top.
(if you are going to game I guess tinerking with background process limits could also help)
I use it as a remove monitoring panel and home automation tablet. Outside of that, unfortunatly, was suppose to be a big tablet for gaming, but it'S way too lagy for that

I've spent lot's of time with both the tablets and Shield portable and I can say that in 2021 , these are still "daily drivers " for me . The trick with these devices is understanding that a lot of the Google apps and permissions have gotten very resource heavy over the years. That is why the K1 had such horrible battery life , there was so much stuff running in addition to providing a top level gaming experience at the time . These devices are "very " capable of gaming and still very much worth it if they are set up correctly. If you read through the older XDA threads you will find out a lot of stuff people people did over the years to speed up / optimize these devices . Both my tablet and portable are on stock roms and just by disabling all the unnecessary notifications , removing resource heavy apps (ADB) and some other simple tweaks , these run exactly the way the developer reviewers said they performed years ago . I actually prefer to play some games on my tablet / portable ( especially game stream ) because the sound and over all gaming experience still holds up incredibly well.

Also thank you for the link so I could easily find what @bigroc2223 was actually talking about!
Just in case there's somebody else who wants to try to install AOSP Extended 5.8, just a warning:
Do NOT download the latest version of OpenGApps (20220215 as of today). For some reason, installing this version makes the tablet unusable, since right after booting it bombards you with an infinite stream of error messages about Google Services having being stopped, and no matter how many times you try to close those error windows, lots and lots more re-appear, blocking the user interface so you can't do anything at all.
So I went back to an older version (20220110) and this one doesn't have that problem. I did get an error message about nVidia Games not working, but that's normal, and it's just a single error message, not millions, as with the other newer version of OpenGApps, which made the tablet completely unusable. After updating nVidia Games from the Play Store, the error is gone, as @bigroc2223 explained. And even after updating all apps to their latest versions, the tablet still works fine, so I'm not sure what happened with the 20220215 version of OpenGApps.
Here's the link to the version of OpenGApps that worked for me:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/opengapps/files/arm/20220110/open_gapps-arm-8.1-nano-20220110.zip/download
Just in case you need some instructions on how to install the ROM (I certainly needed them), you can follow these, only installing the AOSP Extended (AEX) 5.8 ROM instead of the LineageOS ROM:
Nvidia Shield Tablet (shieldtablet) - LineageOS ROMs
LineageOs ROM Nvidia Shield Tablet (shieldtablet) Unofficial roms Download last UNOFFICIAL build (2019-11-13)LineageOS 15.1 – [ Android 8.1 (Oreo) ] Previous version (UNOFFICIAL) (2019-11-15) LineageOS 14.1 – [ Android 7.1.2 (Nougat) ] Table of contents Install LineageOS on shieldtablet Basic...
lineageosroms.com
BTW, I used the version of the AEX 5.8 ROM with Zram (additional cache), and it works fine. You also have to install the DTB file after installing the ROM and the GApps, but the DTB file is installed from the "fastboot" state instead of from the "sideload" feature of TWRP.
Thank you for everybody helping in this thread!

Lawnchair and the Java "path must be convex" error

My new Fire HD 8 2018 makes the fifth device I've flashed LineageOS to and it was by far the least exasperating experience of the five. Unlocking, rooting and the flashing all were remarkably-drama free, unlike all of the previous four, and I am very happy with the way it turned out. I even managed to get a Smali patch for signature spoofing created and flashed in under an hour and on the first attempt, and it works a charm.
I'd read that the Fire HD wasn't exactly a powerhouse tablet but it's replacing an eons-old Kindle Nook HD that I also had LOS on (and which is now an ex-Nook), and the Fire runs like it has twice as many 1.3 GHz cores as the Nook ... because it does. The only fly in the ointment is the Lawnchair launcher. I run close to 60 apps and I'd got them all installed (and in some cases, configured) before I noticed that Lawnchair crashes every time I try to sweep an app's icon from the drawer onto the home screen. It also causes the Babbel language tutorial app to crash every time I try to start it (which doesn't happen if I switch to the Trebuchet launcher).
And regardless how it comes about, it always throws the same error message:
Code:
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: path must be convex
By that time it was too late to determine if maybe one of my pet apps was contributing to the error or if the same would have happened from a clean install, so I re-flashed the ROM to investigate. And wouldn't you know it, it even happens with a clean install.
The version of Lawnchair that came on the LOS ROM is 2.1-2626. The ROM is LOS 15.1, Android 8.1.0.
For the timebeing I have Trebuchet enabled but in the short time that I used Lawnchair I'd got to liking it. I found it intuitive to use and had some customizing features that I appreciated. So my question is, is my time better spent with:
A) installing older versions of Lawnchair to see it they're more stable,
B) trying my hand at troubleshooting the Java "path must be convex" error, or
C) altogether abandoning Lawnchair and contenting myself with another launcher?
Thank you for your time.
