Lawnchair and the Java "path must be convex" error - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My new Fire HD 8 2018 makes the fifth device I've flashed LineageOS to and it was by far the least exasperating experience of the five. Unlocking, rooting and the flashing all were remarkably-drama free, unlike all of the previous four, and I am very happy with the way it turned out. I even managed to get a Smali patch for signature spoofing created and flashed in under an hour and on the first attempt, and it works a charm.
I'd read that the Fire HD wasn't exactly a powerhouse tablet but it's replacing an eons-old Kindle Nook HD that I also had LOS on (and which is now an ex-Nook), and the Fire runs like it has twice as many 1.3 GHz cores as the Nook ... because it does. The only fly in the ointment is the Lawnchair launcher. I run close to 60 apps and I'd got them all installed (and in some cases, configured) before I noticed that Lawnchair crashes every time I try to sweep an app's icon from the drawer onto the home screen. It also causes the Babbel language tutorial app to crash every time I try to start it (which doesn't happen if I switch to the Trebuchet launcher).
And regardless how it comes about, it always throws the same error message:
Code:
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: path must be convex
By that time it was too late to determine if maybe one of my pet apps was contributing to the error or if the same would have happened from a clean install, so I re-flashed the ROM to investigate. And wouldn't you know it, it even happens with a clean install.
The version of Lawnchair that came on the LOS ROM is 2.1-2626. The ROM is LOS 15.1, Android 8.1.0.
For the timebeing I have Trebuchet enabled but in the short time that I used Lawnchair I'd got to liking it. I found it intuitive to use and had some customizing features that I appreciated. So my question is, is my time better spent with:
A) installing older versions of Lawnchair to see it they're more stable,
B) trying my hand at troubleshooting the Java "path must be convex" error, or
C) altogether abandoning Lawnchair and contenting myself with another launcher?
Thank you for your time.

First impressions of XDA OMNI on Acer a500

I have downloaded the XDA omni rom for A500:
Freshly built Android 4.4.2 ROM based on Omnirom KitKat !
"The Team 'IconiaHD' is proud to present a new ROM for your Acer A500 or A501 tablet.
This small team is composed of:
- HenrikE: A200 owner, responsible for an unofficial CM-10.2 build for the A200
- Doume: A200 owner, experienced linux developer
- macia10: A501 owner, tester"
The omni rom installs easily using TWRP ver 2.7 by Thor. Once I followed the OP recommendations all stages in the installation were clear. The rom runs well after the second and third boot. I even used ART. Here is my take so far: rom is fast and smooth. Browsers load pages fast, even high image content sites (CNN). Videos on youtube work flawlessly, wifi signal is very strong. I was able to load all my apps and have them run well. A very nice and responsive rom on the acer a500. Google play store works right off the bat. A few minor issues though: google music play app has a bit of chopping of the music playback. Netflix did not work for me as the app would force closed on me. I tried the netflixfix as recommended by the OP but it did not work either ( I am waiting for the next fix as suggested by the OP). Other than those two minor issues I can't wait to try the updated versions of this omni rom as it adds a new life to this acer a500. I am very happy to see that there are developers who continue to get value for us by implementing optimized roms on the a500. Thank you for your great work.:good::good::good::good:

I'm filing a report with the moderators to put this into device-specific forums, as you're issuing a report against an unofficial build that, to my knowledge, no one involved with the bringup has attempted to get merged officially. (I'll check with the merge guys tonight on that...)

Further Update on XDA OMNI for Acer a500 (unofficial)
I have been running this rom for the past few weeks. Here is what I have noticed. I hope that this will help further the development of the rom. I am attaching the logcat information.
a). Recent update from Google Play Music fixed the audio glitches I was having before.
b). Chrome Browser runs well has problems playing videos, causes browser FC (flash issue?). Lightening Browser works well.
c). Occasional window change results in zoomed icons in the apps section.
d). Netflix still FCs.
e). Network Location works on my Acer A500.
f). Youtube works without any issues.

Thanks for the report! Interesting that network location works for you. It seems to work sometimes and sometimes not, would be nice to figure out why..
The latest versions of netflix don't work, even with the fix applied. Try version 3.1.2 instead: http://gsmandroidapps.com/download-netflix-3-1-2-build-1142-apk/
I haven't seen the problem with zoomed icons, does it happen often?

You're welcome. The Netflix 3-1-2 build works after installing and subsequently rebooting! Thank you. The zoomed icons happens infrequently and occurs only when I go into the apps windows from the home screen. It seems to be more of a lag issue when switching windows. I installed Apex launcher and the lag has decreased significantly. In addition, the zoomed icons are no longer present.... so far. I have decided to use Dalvik runtime as the Art function is not compatible with some of my apps.

omni rom for acer A501 by HenriKe
I have tried to flash this ROM several times andi keep having issues. I am on Acer 501.
Op still says to use the 4-27 build for 501 as the 4-29 build has issues.
Issues I have at multiple force reboots. (Kernel panics). Also if data is enabled then WiFi will not connect. I know I should have saved the last_kmsg but just sipped and restored previous ROM.
Still waiting for the fixed 501 version to be posted.
As stated here = http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52709444&postcount=109
Some tweaks that make this Rom smooth.
I would like to suggest the following tweaks that will make your experience with this rom smoother. Make sure you have a complete backup of your a500 current system. Use these at your own risk.
Before installing rom:
1. Wipe cache, wipe Dalvik cache, "real format" data (very important).
Installation:
2. Install rom, install mini-gapps, install super user
3. Boot up rom. Set up Wifi, Set up Google play services.
4. Reboot.
5. Make a complete back of your new omni rom.
Tweaking:
6. Use "interactive"; "sio", "set on boot"
7. Set cpu to max to 1200 Mhz and min to 456 Mhz
8. Reboot
9. Install Nova or ADW launcher. Have at least 3 screen windows . Set look and field to “faster than light” (Nova)
10. Install "prop builder" editor
11. Edit the prop file as follows (see attached image):
dalvik.vm.heapmaxfree
12m
dalvik.vm.heapstartsize
12m
12. Reboot.
13. Run a benchmark app and compare. I got an Antutu score of 9036 (see attached image) up from 7700. Overall system is more responsive.
14. If all goes well, make another backup with a different name.
Good Luck and enjoy.

I think you have a typo. dalvik.vm.heapsize cannot be set to 12m or it won't boot. Maybe you mean from 384mb to 128mb ?

Problem waking up
Hi,
I installed this ROM, and everything seems to be working well, expect waking the device from sleep.
It sometimes happens, after the tablet is not used for a while and is sleeping, that the power led is on (white), but the screen is black. If you try to wake the device by pushing the power button, nothing seems to happen. The only option is to power it down by holding the power button, and powering up again. Very annoying!
The device is not docked and not connected to mains power.
I disabled daydreaming, and it seems to happen less frequently, but not 100% sure.
I suspect it has something to do with the tab waking up by itself to do some syncing, and somehow getting stuck.
Any ideas?
How can I try to debug this?
Any help appreciated!
You have the infamous Sleep of Death (SOD). It is/was a common problem with certain a500 motherboards. I don't have the SOD issues.
You should contact the XDA iconia HD development team at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2705989
I am still a junior member and I don't have privilege to post on their blog, yet.
You may try these (make a back up of you current omni rom first):
1. Ensure that the wifi is kept on during sleep. Go to Advanced settings in the wifi options. Click on check box to set scanning always available.
2. Edit the buildprop file to set the wifi_supplicant_scan_interval to 0 sec.
Cons... decrease in battery life. May not be a significant amount.
If the above settings don't work for you, check the links below.

Thanks for the advice.
I'm also still junior, so I can't post there either
I never had any SOD issues before, not with the stock ICS and the 3 other ROMs I tried before.
Putting scanning always available didn't solve it, but haven't tried the buildprop yet.
Problem is that is is very intermittent: sometimes the tab runs for about 3 days without hanging, then it happens within the hour...

The Iconia Team HD just posted an update for their ROM. You may try that one and see how it goes. Another developer also posted another a500 omni ROM version 4.4.4. light. Try both and see which one works best for you.

Awesome. I noticed also that sometimes the screen does not come on with one single press of the power button (most of the times it does) when the Acer a500 is asleep. Sometimes, you just have to watch the power button and press until the white light comes on and the screen comes alive (there is no reboot, it just takes you back to the lock screen). I use to think that it was an sod but all is well.

I'm seeing the same thing: the tab won't come alive and I think "****, an SoD again", so I press long to force a power off, and after a few seconds, the screen comes alive! Weird...
For the rest: awesome ROM, much better than the previous one I tried (don't remember exactly which one it was)!

Just had my recovered A500 setup as you mentioned... Yes, it's running OK.
However, AnTuTu (v 5.7.1) just keep failing...after it ran up to around 75-76 %. What ver. of AnTutu are your running (since I notice your screen looks slightly different from mine)?
I found this ROM to be the most stable ROMS available for the A500.

Problem with Phoenix OS on a Lenovo X1 Tablet

I have been a Remix OS user for a while, and I love it, but decided to try Phoenix OS on my new X1! So far, I am not too impressed. Installation went smoothly, but unlike Remix, the OS is not pre-rooted. I was able to easily do that by reading another post on this forum, however! I like the idea that it is Android 7.1.1, but I am having the following problems:
1. The laptop restarts itself randomly while booted into it. Works fine while in Windows 10.
2. The screen will not auto rotate. I am getting some odd error on the Grub4dos screen at startup, but is goes by too quickly to see what it says, and the letters are too small. I have a feeling Phoenix has a problem with the hardware in the X1 that controls the screen position, but that is just a theory. The tablet seems to only auto start when it is moved.
3. The camera does not work. This is no real big deal, but nevertheless, it no workee!
4. Like Remix, you cannot install another launcher.
I am going to play with it a little more, but think I will just go back to Remix. The only other alternative I see is Android x86, but I am having problems finding clear instructions on how to install it. Is anybody else experiencing any of these problems on their devices?
Edit: Android x86 is not an option. I found easy instructions, but it does not support the Android Market, or Playstore.
Apparently RemixOS is not an option for the X1 either! It installs, but then just sticks at the "Android x86" screen and will not boot into it. I have removed both from the tablet. I just updated the tabs BIOS, so I may give PhoenixOS one more shot!

Microwear H5 MT6737M Android 6

Very scarce info everywhere, but quite a few people already use this $80 super-powerful watch including me (which is basically a micro-smartphone).
Many video reviews already.
I personally think that such powerful watch (much more powerful than my cheap 2016 tablet on previous Mediatek chip with less RAM) is a such small smartphone with illusion like it’s watch made by very modified version of Circle launcher with edited Android 6. I don’t see any limitations on this watch to run full stock Android OS here from the M6737M series smartphones, if ported. Even now all full-featured apps from Google store made for smartphones are perfectly runs here, including very big navigation apps and even the full “battery saver” function present from smartphones (first one which I see on Android watch ever). The only limitation which I noticed is very small display (specific apps cannot fit) and badly edited Android OS (like completely deleted status bar from OS, any 3rd-party status bar apps are installing fine but crashing on settings). Most 3rd-party launchers from Google store and open sources are installing here (only with few exceptions) - the most stable one I’ve found is open source “Essential Launcher” ver. 1.3.
My feeling from “lift wrist turn on” function with “swipe pages” makes almost iPhone X experience here, no any buttons needed, very stable power on only by view and swiping windows (including closing them by swiping to the right) makes very good feedback to the user.
Everything spoiled only by edited OS - awful work with fonts, too many illogical Menu lists, deleted functions like not present “Storage” in OS settings(only shortcut to file explorer) - the USB storage media not adding because of edits on OS level, considering normal micro-USB & even if you turn on “usb media” in developer settings.
Very few watch-faces with no way to install any others, it’s obviously fake feature to make you feel and use them as watch.
So, what I think many would be glad to see here - the root is the most important goal for now(developer menu allows bootloader unlock-not sure if it’s true because USB media settings there not works), maybe putting the normal Android is the next goal.
The root is very needed to firewall for very shady apps here, it’s very powerful device so it have full smartphone spyware, like notorious MTK Logger & Thermal Manager, which can work at sleep mode (it is almost suspicious that they broke USB media function so user can’t bypass network connection for installs). Root needed to work with display resolution and etc.
Edit: the processor by Aida app recognized as MT6737M but on Aliexpress you can find watch easily by search term processor "MTK6737M" (only like 7 sellers total).
I have the H5 as well, and you're correct! The main draw back is the stripped down OS, for example the call forwarding features are missing..
Ordered one of these a few weeks ago, should be getting delivery soon. Interesting to see how it performs, my last android watches have been mt6572 & mt6580, both of these I ported full Android versions to, I may give it a go at porting a full Android version to this in the future
Check this also:

Well I got mine today, seems good so far. As for alternative launchers tried a few that work OK, if you want to change the clockskins for now I have found that Universal Launcher New Gen works just fine (you add clockskin folder +clockskins)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ricktop.ClockSkinCoco
I use mine at least 2 weeks maybe. Without root (which I plan to do but don't have time right now) I do not connect them to any Internet, so I'm using them as just watch (it's my first smartwatch). Files I'm sending through bluetooth from my Android phone, quite neat that you can install apps from bluetooth menu right away.
About battery - very good, if you don't connect them to networks at all, with battery Saver on & "wrist move activation" off they can work whole week on 1 charge (this includes some extensive using in 2 days on winter street with GPS apps, camera-video, constant time checking and etc.). They CAN HOLD MORE days, after the full charge, watch calculated the battery to the 15 days of work - which is believable, as I see now if you will check only time manually they can easily save 1 charge to 12-13 days. I use charger with them only once at week, it's quite shocking to read Apple Watch forums where people making that every 2-3 days.
They're quite powerful - making the zip archive internally from 250Mb photos/videos takes something like 2 minutes.
Because the step-counter here work always (even if you take them to the other room) - this device is just made for the SmartNavi (open source navigation app which use mainly step-counter with rare or no GPS connection for battery saving).
Can't wait for a custom recovery to be made for it, so I can root it. Tried all the rooting apps out on the web and none work so far.
Well I have managed to get Root access, using Magisk, and flashing patched boot image, struggling to create a TWRP recovery. Hoping someone out there can come up with a custom recovery.
Managed to port TWRP to it, but it is in miniature! going to have a play around with it to see if I can make it usable. Anyone with suggestions be grateful - well gave up on trying to amend TWRP resolution, and installed flashify - just flashed an AOSP ROM to the H5, happy days!
Well done stevea76
A step by step or point in the right directions kinda 'guide' would be really appreciated, cos the H5 with its stock funos is far from fun... sure its usable but no fun.

It would be interesting to find if there's any "recovery mode" on stock ROM image at all, considering that there's only 1 button. On similar watches from Samsung and etc they have quite awkward way to enter recovery - like some swipe to the left in time of logo showing and etc. I tried to repeat any swiping during boot - nothing...
Also, by the usual use of watch (almost a month now) I can say that in my case of use the battery holding 1 full charge for 7 days, so a week, the same amount calculated by OS also. That's the battery regime or mode which is now constant in my case (it can be different in situation of other people).
The battery here can be saved even more for a week - I managed to notice that "sleep stat" function are working here at all times and cannot be turned off like step counter in this Android OS, at the night time it randomly turning on the pulse checker light even if you not wearing them, which using the battery (not a big deal, but using some).

Here is the link to the AOSP ROM I ported to the H5.
I must express it is a long winded way to flash it as I am not technically minded, just playing at it, and only do this if you have the stock ROM downloaded as a backup to revert back to and don't mind the possibility of wrecking your toy!, the only reason for me doing it this way is that the recovery TWRP I ported is functional, but not set for the screen size for the H5 so unless you have bionic eyes it is nearly impossible to use, hence the reason for my 'workaround' (note: If anyone can make the TWRP scaled for the watch, just flash the ROM in the usual way)
Here is a 'sort of' guide and link to files.
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=252561
1. Flash
Microwear_Magisk_Patched_Boot_IMG using splash tool, reboot device.
2. Install Magisk Manager from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445/page4
Open Magisk manager and go to settings, set default action to 'Grant'
You now have root.
3. Flash
Microwear_H5_Recovery_TWRP using spflashtool.
4. Install
Flashify (for root users) from the Playstore.
5. Download directly to the watch (or to Computer and transfer to the watch) Microwear_H5_AOSP ROM AND the GAPPS of your choice (Open Gapps arm64 nano was my choice)
6. Use Flashify to install zip(s) making sure you click TWRP as recovery option and also tick the wipe cache, data etc (add the Gapps as well if you want Google)
Click Reboot on flashify.
Hopefully the watch boots to recovery and installs the ROM and gapps!
First boot sticks on boot animation, so if not starting after 3 or 4 minutes power off the watch and reboot, after another 5 to 10 minutes you should see 'android is starting'
Nav Bar is by default on permanently, to make this and notification bar 'hide' (fully Immersive) I used this method.
1. install on pc ADB (Guide below)
2. Enable developer options and USB debugging on watch.
3. connect watch (switched on)
4. Open ADB on pc.
5. Type: adb devices (click enter)
(should see you device is connected)
6. Then type: adb shell - (click enter)
7. Then type this line:
settings put global policy_control immersive.full=*
Now the navigation bar will pop up when you pull down or up slightly on the screen and will auto hide after a couple of seconds.
As for sensors I don't think any are working.
I have included 3 launchers on this ROM, so make your choice!
Please, please, please DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS if you don't know how to revert back to stock rom. I bear no responsibility for broken toys!
Guys, who already have a scatter file for this watch, i really want to make a backup of current ROM before checking for any new updates (which is quite good version from January and there's nowhere on Internet any firmware files for this watch, so saving and sharing ROM is important). If i manage to download ROM i will post it on Google drive.
I wanted to force watch go into it's own recovery but my ADB installation don't see this watch connected - there's a primitive subsystem on watch beside Android OS, it can be seen when you turn Android OS "power off" and connect USB for charging - it will show the battery, i'm puzzled how to enter into any settings of that subsystem.
The stock firmware is on the Microwear Website.

Yeah, i noticed only now, strangely but i remember that a month ago there was nothing about H5 model on their site when i searched…maybe because they just released it.
Also the firmware have the same scatter file - the first one which i found myself for some cheap smartphone on 6737 chip, as i remember i found it on reddit.
As i seen no updates of firmware for now.

No updates as yet. I have ported an AOSP version, pretty much stock Android to the H5, it is basic, but I like the 'stock experience' on a square watch. Not got the sensors set up, but not really bothered about how many steps I have done on any given day or my heart rate for that matter.
Also if you want fancy clockskins then Eric's launcher works just fine on it.

As i understand correctly - here they simulated or just copied clock skins from Apple watch?
Where to find Eric launcher?
For everyone else i will write again link to the firmware from Microwear site here – https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1WaktAl-cjCTE1l0jffA7BnevzESdlCwc?usp=sharing
because chinese support is very short in time and can vanish with website very easily (for example to find an older firmwares to my Onyx Boox ereader i used "webarchive" service, thanks gods we have it - only from this saved archived copies of pages i found the sharing links to the older firmwares, still i cannot find the first version of RemixOS release for KitKat-if anyone have the alpha - please message me)

How do I make this tablet usable again?

I feel like I've tried everything to make this thing work, but every time I use it it locks up almost immediately (as in screen freezes, takes 15 seconds to register touches, sometimes not at all, won't load apps). Right now I'm on SHIELD software version 4.1 (Android 6.0.1) and I just want to use it as a glorified web browser, but it can't even do that. I've tried factory resets, reflashes, tips on the NVIDIA forums... is there any way to identify what slows my tablet down and prevent it? Even on a fresh install its laggy/borderline unusable.
Yep it's a real P.O.S.
It never really was any good.
I fired it up a while ago, fresh factory reset, and still couldn't even hardly browse the internet.
I'm on los14 and it's fine for me. I use the smallest gapps and I also remove the apps I don't use in /system...everything I use works and I don't have any problems with it.

I have been on the same quest as you. Lineage 14.1 was the answer for me for a long time. However, today I have found something even better. I have also tested EVERYTHING so when I say its good, its good. ASOP 5.8 with NANO GAPPS is a smoker! Even when typing there is no hesitation. Everything is quick quick. I downloaded the version with z-ram. I don't know how much that helps. I have used z-ram in other ROMs and it didn't seam to help. So, I would say its just user preference. I have not tested the regular 5.8 yet so try the z-ram one. I think you will love it as much as I do. There is only one bug. It is with NVIDIA Games. It gives you an error that it stopped running. All you have to do is update it in the playstore and it will stop saying that. I hope this helps!

Thank for your review! Just to be sure: are you talking about AOSPExtended? The one in the thread here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/sh...-aosp-extended-aex-5-8-nvidia-shield-t4053745 ?
Hi. I am selling my Shield Tablet + Controller.
Would come inkl. the recalled from nvidia which i resoldered the Battery. I didnt write that in ebay because i didnt want to get banned because of the recall.
just ebay : Nvidia-Shield-Tablet-and-Controller-2016
I where thinking on selling mine as well... But honestly, will it worth selling?
How much do you ask for the tablet and controller combo?
Well, after disabling doze and the srgb mode, and making sure all programs were updated and that I had plenty of free space (>1GB of ram with nothing open and >1.5GB of disk)... I must say I'm pretty satisfied again with the device.
I don't even see anymore that stupid constant >50% IOW activity inside top.
(if you are going to game I guess tinerking with background process limits could also help)
I use it as a remove monitoring panel and home automation tablet. Outside of that, unfortunatly, was suppose to be a big tablet for gaming, but it'S way too lagy for that

I've spent lot's of time with both the tablets and Shield portable and I can say that in 2021 , these are still "daily drivers " for me . The trick with these devices is understanding that a lot of the Google apps and permissions have gotten very resource heavy over the years. That is why the K1 had such horrible battery life , there was so much stuff running in addition to providing a top level gaming experience at the time . These devices are "very " capable of gaming and still very much worth it if they are set up correctly. If you read through the older XDA threads you will find out a lot of stuff people people did over the years to speed up / optimize these devices . Both my tablet and portable are on stock roms and just by disabling all the unnecessary notifications , removing resource heavy apps (ADB) and some other simple tweaks , these run exactly the way the developer reviewers said they performed years ago . I actually prefer to play some games on my tablet / portable ( especially game stream ) because the sound and over all gaming experience still holds up incredibly well.

Thanks a lot for your suggestion! I installed in my original nVidia Shield Tablet (no K1) and works like a charm! It's like having a new tablet again!

Also thank you for the link so I could easily find what @bigroc2223 was actually talking about!
Just in case there's somebody else who wants to try to install AOSP Extended 5.8, just a warning:
Do NOT download the latest version of OpenGApps (20220215 as of today). For some reason, installing this version makes the tablet unusable, since right after booting it bombards you with an infinite stream of error messages about Google Services having being stopped, and no matter how many times you try to close those error windows, lots and lots more re-appear, blocking the user interface so you can't do anything at all.
So I went back to an older version (20220110) and this one doesn't have that problem. I did get an error message about nVidia Games not working, but that's normal, and it's just a single error message, not millions, as with the other newer version of OpenGApps, which made the tablet completely unusable. After updating nVidia Games from the Play Store, the error is gone, as @bigroc2223 explained. And even after updating all apps to their latest versions, the tablet still works fine, so I'm not sure what happened with the 20220215 version of OpenGApps.
Here's the link to the version of OpenGApps that worked for me:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/opengapps/files/arm/20220110/open_gapps-arm-8.1-nano-20220110.zip/download
Just in case you need some instructions on how to install the ROM (I certainly needed them), you can follow these, only installing the AOSP Extended (AEX) 5.8 ROM instead of the LineageOS ROM:
Nvidia Shield Tablet (shieldtablet) - LineageOS ROMs
LineageOs ROM Nvidia Shield Tablet (shieldtablet) Unofficial roms Download last UNOFFICIAL build (2019-11-13)LineageOS 15.1 – [ Android 8.1 (Oreo) ] Previous version (UNOFFICIAL) (2019-11-15) LineageOS 14.1 – [ Android 7.1.2 (Nougat) ] Table of contents Install LineageOS on shieldtablet Basic...
lineageosroms.com
BTW, I used the version of the AEX 5.8 ROM with Zram (additional cache), and it works fine. You also have to install the DTB file after installing the ROM and the GApps, but the DTB file is installed from the "fastboot" state instead of from the "sideload" feature of TWRP.
Thank you for everybody helping in this thread!

[GUIDE/HOWTO][G920/G925-F-FD-I-S-K-L-T-W8] Which ROM to use for best stability and functionality

Introduction
I have spent too many hours trying to find the perfect ROM to install on my Samsung Galaxy S6 phone. My goal was to find an ultra debloated ROM without any Samsung or Google stuff with the bare minimum. Turns out, it's impossible. I also wanted to use something new that went out of the normal boring stuff we are used to see. The ROM and Kernel selection is just enormous. I also needed to address a very specific issue which is to maintain the cell phone up to date with the latest ROM it can take to be stable and usable while being able to install the latest version of apps from Google Play. I have a SIM card but I never recieve any phone calls on it and it's an international card that I cannot use without high fees. It's basically used when my wife, from another country, needs to contact me via SMS. So phone calls using the default call app is just useless for me.
Apps that I excessively use
So here is the list of apps that I use, or shall I say, OVER-use:
Facebook Messenger (video calls)
Grandstream Wave - GS Wave (All my phone calls using SIP service)
Camera app (My wife is in another country for now so pictures and videos is our way of communicating)
Microsoft Launcher (the only free launcher having a good balance between customization and those notification dots)
Banking apps (2 major ones, 1 credit card app, PayPal and Xoom)
Games (2 to 4 mostly from AI Factory and 1 from Facebook app)
Facebook, Reddit and Discord
GMail
Total Commander + LAN plugin
Magisk (latest available version on GitHub)
AdAway (latest available version for ROM version installed, removes pretty much all the ads in my games and apps)
Google Play (Obviously)
Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Edge browser (depended on my mood as long as I was NOT using the infamous Google Chrome or Samsung Browser)
Open Camera (Only on AOSP roms or Stock roms higher than v7.0)
Problems / Issues / Bugs / Missing configs
After all of my tests, here is the list of all problems I have encountered under which ROM versions:
No floating video call window when call is unfocused. When unfocused, other person sees black screen until I get back the video call in full screen focus - Facebook Messenger (Stock rom v7.0) this issue does not happen on roms higher than v7.x, floating video call is possible with v8.x and higher roms.
Dark mode unavailable or requires heavy tweaks to fake or achieve a similar effect in OS, example, dark mode in the system settings menus - System configuration menus (Stock rom v7.x)
Camera's picture taking is not syncing with flash, therefor, picture is taken WITHOUT the flash leading to dark pictures - Default camera app (Stock roms higher than v7.0 and all AOSP roms)
Lower than usual voice recording audio - Facebook Messenger (sending a voice recording), Default camera app (all AOSP roms)
Unable to see the internal storage of my device in Windows Explorer - LineageOS roms (some custom roms do work that are not pure LineageOS)
Bluetooth connecting but no audio is directed to the device - Facebook Messenger and all other system sounds and music (AOSP roms higher than v7.x)
Bluetooth causes Facebook Messenger to drop connection when in use with BT device. Once disconnected, call ceases to drop - Facebook Messenger (AOSP roms)
Apps and system a tiny bit less responsive - Facebook game Words with Friends, Home screen and configs (Stock rom v7.0)
Contacts not syncing - GS Wave (AOSP roms with Open GApps Pico and Nano)
Username and passwords not automatically filled from stored passwords in Google account - Facebook, Reddit (All roms)
GMail dark mode and dark mode option unavailable - GMail (Stock rom v7.x)
Some games do not install or simply unavailable from Google Play - Super Mario Run (Highly debloated Stock rom v7.0)
Initial setup crashes after configuring the first time wifi connection, Google's update checking fails (AOSP roms with Open GApps)
When resizing the DP from 360 to 480 in the developper options, keyboard does not stretch to the entire screen width - System (Stock rom v7.x)
Lack of keyboard customization such as enabeling the numbers row instead of integrating them in the letter keys with long touch - System (all AOSP roms)
Random reboots or total system freeze. Very minimal and rare, not enough to remember too much about it, but still happened - System (Stock rom v7.0 other than SamStock)
Tests
My phone: Canadian Flat SM-G920W8
As of today, I have tested Ultimate Nougate, Oreo, Unofficial Lineage OS 14.1-17.1, FlynOS, NexusOS, S8 ports Note 8 ports, ViperOS, Marduck, SamStock, DotOS plus many other derivatives of LineageOS 16 and 17.1. If a rom was not mentioning compatibility with W8 version, I'd try using a compatible Kernel which seems to make the roms work and boot properly but most of these tests were performed with roms that stated supporting the T or W8 variants.
First test was to actually go through the Install process which Ultimate Oreo and 1 or 2 others failed. The amount of failed installs is very neglectible. Next was to actually boot into the OS. I got a few boot loops due to Kernel incompatibilities, again, just 1 or 2 failed REALLY and a few others were my fault for installing a wrong Kernel. So nothing to mention here too. Next was to actually be able to use the Camera app without doing anything else. All AOSP roms failed this. I simply opened the app, enabled flash and took a picture in a dark place. Picture has never been taken properly. Camera flashes correctly but picture is taken AFTER the flash turns out. Open Camera with the Camera API 2 enabled solved this issue.
Is was now left with rooting my phone. Note that most Stock roms and some AOSP roms have their own pre-built root which I utterly hate. Magisk is available and easily installable and works super fine so I do not need an old outdated version of Super SU or Magisk pre-installed. If the rom had Magisk pre-installed, I'd simply flash the Magisk app over it before booting to be at the latest version. I also needed to install Open GApps on AOSP roms and configure it. This was much easier to do when having a first time NO OPEN GAPPS intial boot. Basically, boot the first time without Open GApps, then reboot and install Open GApps and reboot to system, this resolves the wifi issue.
After all of this, it's time to let Google Play update everything it has to before starting to use Google Play and installing our apps. Turns out that I hate pretty much all of the launchers out there. They all have weird lacks. Lack of options, lack of configuration or no support for notification dots or a payment is needed to unlock this feature, lack of icon and folder lables. I tried the major ones and I even installed the hacked version available as torrents and I was not impressed by any one of them. Microsoft Launcher is the best one I know that offers enough options to configure what I want AND enables notification dots freely. The only last thing they could make available is the possibility to configure folder background colors and transparency and icon styles. To my opinion, that's all that's missing. I DO NOT use gestures so no comment on this.
Verdict
I absolutely NEED my bluetooth to work and I need this camera app to work flawlessly. This means that I am left with one single option. That is:
Stable Stock (Touchwiz based) rom version 7.0 (Nougat)
I tested some nice ones but again, I run into some issues, therefor:
MY RECOMMENDATION: SamStock ROM
ALTERNATIVELY, My Re-Pack of the above ROM: SamStock ROM (Lightly Debloated)
The only Problem I fell upon is the download which required me to use a separate download manager to download this rom from Android File Host. I also am displeased that SamStock DOES include his own version of Magisk integrated inside the rom so after rom installation, I have to flash MY version of Magisk immediately before booting. This rom is also completely Stock which means NO debloating, Everything is there, from Samsung apps to Google apps. Knox is the only thing that got removed. So this is also a very big file to download, almost 2gb when some roms go far below the 1gb size. So it's probably the most space greedy rom out there, but it's also the one I have the least problems with.
Why not the other roms such as Marduk? Because they are not 100% stock, they are moded stock roms with the author's personal touches and possible kernels. The customized roms brought some awkward issues at moments and made the phone unstable with some rare but random reboots and total freeze requiring me to hard reboot the phone using "Volume Down + Home + Power". Some others just had a weird issue where some apps and games were not available to download on Google Play while as with a same v7.0 rom like SamStock, these were available for download.
As for AOSP roms, the camera and bluetooth issues are just too major to make the roms usable on a daily basis. Open Camera DOES resolve the camera image issue but does not resolve the low volume issue.
I hope this will help any of you out there to clarify your decision on what to install. I did my job in trying pretty much all I could download from XDA for my version of the phone. I recon that some exceptions may happen and that you may have not run into any of the issues I listed. Please feel free to comment.
