Hi guys,
I'm looking for users who could test some of my alpha and beta apps on devices that run WM5 and PPC2003.
For a mix of apps that I will have available for testing look at the coming soon stuff at http://www.andrewopala.ca.
The testing will be as simple as seeing if they install properly and if the keys, keyboards, and pen seem to work properly with the apps. Finally, seeing that they unistall properly.
Anyone with phones both on and off carriers that have Smartphone Signing Locks for Windows Mobile 5 application installs would be an asset.
In advance of your help here's a coupon for Blackjack that I recently posted on handango. The price for the game with the coupin is about $2.25US / 1.75€. THe coupon expires at the end of February: 79ED923F
THanks.
-Andrew
Forgot to attach the locations where you can download blackjack:
http://www.andrewopala.ca/spec/aoblackjack.1.0.0.spec.php
or
http://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?productId=202401
ill test some stuff on wm03 if you want,
also review it.
Sounds good - I'll have some 2003-targetted software also.
Can your device be upgraded to wm5?
BTW I putting on a tester-only forum on my site, so we won't polute this excellent board with specific nonsense.
It should be up on http://www.andrewopala.ca/forum soon. I'll drop a note in this group once it's up. There are a lot of people who have shown some interest, but we'll see how many have the time once we get this setup.
P.S. does anyone want the blackjack app for free? WM5 with CF 2.0 is required.
If so I'll drop the price to $5 so that the coupon will make it free. Let's say I get 4 yes's to this post. I'll drop the price until I see 4 purchases at zero.
Hi,
if you need a Wm5 device for beta testing my T-mobile vario II is at your disposal
The vario form factor is very nice with the keyboard slide-out and has it's uses. What processor does your model use?
It has the Samsung SC32442A-400MHz stacked cpu an ARM type processor.
I'm interested in testing some stuff for the TMO Dash.
The net price dropped to zero from the overwhelming demand on another board (4 responses! ). To restate:
The product is here: http://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?productId=202401
And the coupon is good unti lthe end of February: 79ED923F
allo,
nope ive got a special edition of the Magician though (400 hz cpu, 128 meg memory) WM3 with a variation of patches and upgrades.

I'd be happy to be a tester for you, particularly if there are games!
(Cingular 8125 running Molski's 2.26 custom ROM)
Hi guys, the forum has taken shape this week and we already have one patiently waiting tester.
The testor login is: http://www.andrewopala.ca/forum.
Once you create an account for yourself, the interface will ping me that you want to get on the board. I'll send you an email asking you to introduce yourself and let me know why you want to join. After that I'll wait for your response and then activate your account.
Please read the stuff in how to category. Then we can start writing a few docs on setting up the test environments - not a lot of work, but I expect it will be useful for everyone to be on the same page.
I'm in the eastern time zone (GMT-5), and for the time-being I'm the sys admin for www.sportpools.ca while the real admin is in Cuba for a holiday with his family, so I may be a day or two in responding to you after you sign in. My Sunday is busy with my family to don't expect much until Monday or Tuesday.

P.S. I really appreciate your interest and I know we all benefit from this.
Alright, so this might be a big long shot, but does anybody have an M8 first of all that they could rip and try to port? It runs on WinMo, but has been cloned to be nearly identical to the iPhone. The only thing that would be really difficult is the resolution on the M8 being scaled down to the Diamond. Any ideas?

Should just be an overlay app similar to Manilla. Once the phone is actually released (still vaporware in my opinion) we can break it down from there.
Not to kill your hopes, but the M8 runs CE instead of WinMo. Windows Mobile is a smaller subset of CE. Some apps should run on both platforms, but I don't think that you can take that UI. I'm also pretty sure that the M8 has a capacitive touch screen instead of resistive.
Hopefully it can still be done!

According to a forum on Meizu official website, M8 should be released before the Chinese new year in mainland China. I've seen on-line shop accepting pre-order.

I just saw a Meizu store today and got a peek at the M8. It was pretty cool I have to admit and darn cheap. the 8GB version is 2480 RMB which is about US$364. Thye didn't speak much english at the shop but they did say it runs on WinCE.
They showed me the dual touch feature and I was pretty surprised. I hadn't heard of this device before today honestly. The interface looked really smooth and intuitive. I think I want one. It's priced a few hundred less than the best price I can get on a diamond (I already have a diamond)
their website is www.meizu.com but it is only in Chinese. When I can get my GF or someone to help me read it I'll try to come back here and give it.

yeah, I found the english website. the girl at the shop said the site was only in Chinese so I parroted that. I'm going back to the shop tomorrow to test drive the phone
ok, I went to the shop today and the device is really nice. the interface seems very responsive and it supports English and Chinese natively. It has no 3G, no GPS, and no 16GB are available right now. Seems like a great phone but since I have a Diamond and the only thing I don't like about it is the screen size I'm torn between the M8 and the O2 Flame. I do a lot of spreadsheets and Word docs on my phone so the larger screen even at the same resolution as my diamond seems like the way to go plus it has 2GB built in and I've seen updates to support larger SD cards and run WM6.1. I think I'll buy an M8 when it has GPS and or at least a 3G that will work here in China.
I love the idea of the Galaxy Tab, but unfortunately due to my eyesight I'm going to have to stick with the Ipad and return my Samsung Galaxy Tab bought from PCWorld UK last Monday.
Anyone got any ideas for the best approach to use with PCWorld UK to obtain a full refund. I have opened the box and used the Tab for a few days, was careful with packaging and have performed a factory reset on the device.
If I cannot get a full refund from PCWorld UK then onto eBay it willl go.
I will be first in line when there is a decent 10inch version available.
Mike
If I were you, I'd probably complain that I'm unable to get to full desktop sites of certain websites (e.g. BBC iPlayer) and that was your whole raison d'être for buying a Tab.
Yes, it can be fixed by flashing a later firmware, but you don't know that!

Dave

Dave, you seem to be compounding his anger with irrational statements. Why dont you just download one of the 6 other browsers that are availiable online and in the market and which show full desktop sites.
Theres absolutely no need to flash new firmware and a senior member should know that...
He is simply trying to give an excuse to receive a full refund not give a work around for the web browser...
Just a thought but did you try to download Spare Parts and increase the font size through it?
I took my iPad back to PC World and got a full refund after telling them it was no good too me due to lack of flash. They refunded me without fuss.
I'd go with what the other poster advised and say that sites like iPlayer are going straight to mobile view but you purchased it in good faith believing it would do full sites.
I love my Tab, especially now I got full sites working after flashing it

You seem to have *completely* misread both the original post, and my reply!
As far as I can tell, the OP loves the Tab but can't get on with the 7" screen due to poor eyesight. So, he wants an excuse to return the device that the store will accept given that it has been used.
All I have done is given him that excuse. If he takes his Tab back to PC World and demonstrates that he can't get full fat iPlayer on it, he can legitimately claim that the device is not fit for purpose!
Putting the OPs question to one side though, on the firmware that came with my Tab it didn't work! In order to get full fat iPlayer on the Tab I *had* to flash a later firmware. And yes, I tried lots of different browsers including:
Skyfire
Opera
Firefox
XScope
Dolphin HD
With the shipped firmware, not one of these would give me the full desktop iPlayer site *and* allow me to play the flash content on it. It didn't matter what I set the useragent to, and yes I tried everything.
The problem also came up on lots of other websites (e.g. Carphone Warehouse). In that case, whilst I could get to a desktop version of the site, the moment I clicked on a link it would take me back to the mobile site.
So far, the only known way of fixing this is to flash to JK4 (see here). Note that your firmware may well be different to the original firmware on *my* device, so *you* may not have this issue, but since my device came from PC World, I'm prepared to bet that the OPs firmware is the same as mine, and therefore will exhibit the same behaviour.
So yes, I do know what I am talking about here, and there is most definitely a reason to flash a new firmware!
Regards,
Dave

Agreed. I just find the 10inch form factor of the Ipad screen more suitable for my use. Dolphin HD browser and Skyfire both work great. I have used Spare Parts and applied the compatability fix and also increased fiont sizes.
I am just looking for a reasonable sounding excuse to get a full refund from PCWorld UK rather than a quick sale on eBay where I will loose some moeny.
I find the magnification smoother on the Ipad, plus Angry Birds does seem to stutter more than on the Ipad.
Mike.

I am not angry, I love the Android OS and the open-ness it brings, its the form factor that is not suitable. As soon as a decent full feature 10inch android tablet is available then I will be first in oine for a sale.
I now realise 10ich is my "sweet spot", I am just looking for a reasonable "unfit for purpose" excuse to get my money back within PCWorlds 7 working days refund policy.
Mike
You state BBC iPlayer and Carphone Warehouse as examples of the desktop websites that only show the "mobile" version. Can you tell me any others I can use as examples. My Tab is already "boxed" up, ready to go back to the store. Thanks. Mike.

Not off the top of my head because I've flashed a working firmware on my device now, so it all works ok!
iPlayer is probably the best one though - the mobile site doesn't give you live streams for starters and the recorded streams are low quality compared to the desktop versions.
Yesterday I watched the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix live on my Tab using the "desktop" iPlayer site, and this would have impossible with the stock firmware.

Job done!
Took the tab into my local PCWorld UK store this evening and walked away with a full refund without too much hassle.
Assistant I spoke to was convinced he could get it showing full desktop sites with a change in Settings. When he could not, the refund was very quickly offered.
I enjoyed my week with the Tab. Just being able to stuff content on without Itunes, the camera, android market were all great. in the end the 7inch screen was not right for me.
Roll on a 10inch, Honeycomb Android tablets, if Samsung produce one of these then they a sale again.
Interesting ... Got my entertainment bundle without issues on PC World purchased Tab (on day of release). Got games ok ... applied movie voucher ... ordered my 16 movies ... nightmare getting onto tab (site really flaky and DRM on various films failed) and awful download experience ... 12 out of 16 failed to complete the download on more than one occasion.
When I called Samsung Apps CS .. they committed to resolving above issues and also trying to get me PC DVD copy which was promised when voucher applied. They said they had not decided whether they should be giving two copies of each film with this promotion but I explained for those that have already been told at time of voucher application, they really have no choice. Let's see what happens. Curious to know what other people's experience has been like.
Anyway ... the real puzzle was ... I asked about 2.3 and 2.4 updates.
They know nothing about the latter, but I was told 2.3 was already out in the US (Grrr) and although there was no date I could be given, we should expect it soon in the UK.
Anyone from US played with it yet ?
Paul.
So far no update to 2.3 in the US that I know of.
Sent from my SCH-I800 using XDA App
When I redeemed my voucher, all the movies I've bought so far have given me two links - one for the PC and one for mobile.
As to 2.3 for the Tab - as far as I'm aware it's not available anywhere, so I think you've been misinformed.

Dave
Hello, guys!
I am interested in buying the Mate 8 from a Chinease retailer. My main motivation is that they offer lower prices on the device. However I am aware that there are some "risks" involved so I wanted to make this tread, hoping that some usefull advice can be gathered here.
Firstly, I understand that there are a couple of versions of the Mate 8. As far they are conserned the only ones worth considering are the AL10, L29 and L09 since the other versions, like DL00 for instance, have poor software support. Does this mean that the former enjoy regular software updates? In the case of the AL10 can one receive the uptades regulary if he is not residing in China? Does Huawei push montly security patches?
My second consern is regarding google play services. As far as I understand a buyer of an AL10 would receive the device without google play store and google services. Is it true that the device comes with a Huawei app store from where they can be downloaded? Are there any issues regarding the installation and regular usage of the play store and other apps that are downloaded on an AL10?After all it is a Chinease version so perhaps it was not meant to have play store on it.
Thirdly I would like to ask whether one should allow the retailer to install google play and multi-ling support? I ask this because it came to my knowledge that these vendors would usually install some kind of custom rom that does not have software support.
Is there something that I am missing? Would you have any further advice? Is there something else one must look after when buying a device from China?
I bought mine here
https://www.aliexpress.com/store/1968447 (not sure if i can show a link to a store).
take a DHL and tell them to write on package that is worth about 80 usd to pay less taxes.
Ive got a DL00 version, 32 rom, 3 ram. Its multilanguage support with a play store and OTA updates support. Working great, smooth and fast. And it was cheaper than in polish store about 30% !
They got support on whatsapp and they help you in your problems.
I can highly recommend it to you. If you have any questions u can always prv me.
I bought the mate 8 just after it released in China (I went in person). I am now residing in Australia and still receive the updates as fast as others in China. The only issue is some apps and features (like the update change log) are in Chinese and I can't change it, not that bad for me but maybe it is for you.
It comes with Huaweis app store which upon searching google can install all the normal google apps like the appstore. I've had absolutely no issues using it normally here and every app and setting I need works.
I wouldn't get them to do anything to the phone because it's easy to do myself.

I am glad to hear that your device works properly!
I suppose when you first set it up you have the option to choose between English and Chinease right? Do you need to have a huawei account to download apps from the Huawei app store? If yes, did you have any issues setting it up? I am asking because I have heard that some people do have. Regarding the change log it would't botter me if it is in Chinease, but is there something more "major" that is also in Chinease and one should know of?
You can convert the China Version AL 10 to C432 Euroversion or C636 Asia Version.
