Hi guys,
I'm looking for users who could test some of my alpha and beta apps on devices that run WM5 and PPC2003.
For a mix of apps that I will have available for testing look at the coming soon stuff at http://www.andrewopala.ca.
The testing will be as simple as seeing if they install properly and if the keys, keyboards, and pen seem to work properly with the apps. Finally, seeing that they unistall properly.
Anyone with phones both on and off carriers that have Smartphone Signing Locks for Windows Mobile 5 application installs would be an asset.
In advance of your help here's a coupon for Blackjack that I recently posted on handango. The price for the game with the coupin is about $2.25US / 1.75€. THe coupon expires at the end of February: 79ED923F
THanks.

Forgot to attach the locations where you can download blackjack:
http://www.andrewopala.ca/spec/aoblackjack.1.0.0.spec.php
or
http://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?productId=202401
ill test some stuff on wm03 if you want,
also review it.
Sounds good - I'll have some 2003-targetted software also.
Can your device be upgraded to wm5?
BTW I putting on a tester-only forum on my site, so we won't polute this excellent board with specific nonsense.
It should be up on http://www.andrewopala.ca/forum soon. I'll drop a note in this group once it's up. There are a lot of people who have shown some interest, but we'll see how many have the time once we get this setup.
P.S. does anyone want the blackjack app for free? WM5 with CF 2.0 is required.
If so I'll drop the price to $5 so that the coupon will make it free. Let's say I get 4 yes's to this post. I'll drop the price until I see 4 purchases at zero.
Hi,
if you need a Wm5 device for beta testing my T-mobile vario II is at your disposal
The vario form factor is very nice with the keyboard slide-out and has it's uses. What processor does your model use?
It has the Samsung SC32442A-400MHz stacked cpu an ARM type processor.
I'm interested in testing some stuff for the TMO Dash.
The net price dropped to zero from the overwhelming demand on another board (4 responses! ). To restate:
The product is here: http://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?productId=202401
And the coupon is good unti lthe end of February: 79ED923F
allo,
nope ive got a special edition of the Magician though (400 hz cpu, 128 meg memory) WM3 with a variation of patches and upgrades.

I'd be happy to be a tester for you, particularly if there are games!
(Cingular 8125 running Molski's 2.26 custom ROM)
Hi guys, the forum has taken shape this week and we already have one patiently waiting tester.
The testor login is: http://www.andrewopala.ca/forum.
Once you create an account for yourself, the interface will ping me that you want to get on the board. I'll send you an email asking you to introduce yourself and let me know why you want to join. After that I'll wait for your response and then activate your account.
Please read the stuff in how to category. Then we can start writing a few docs on setting up the test environments - not a lot of work, but I expect it will be useful for everyone to be on the same page.
I'm in the eastern time zone (GMT-5), and for the time-being I'm the sys admin for www.sportpools.ca while the real admin is in Cuba for a holiday with his family, so I may be a day or two in responding to you after you sign in. My Sunday is busy with my family to don't expect much until Monday or Tuesday.

P.S. I really appreciate your interest and I know we all benefit from this.

Use an XDA II at the moment, still stuggling to get it to upgrade to SE at the moment. Sort of an intrim measure, untill I decide what to uprade to next. However because I use it with a WiFi card & pocket Skype, my upgrade options are limited.
Have always loved the I-Mate Jam, since its launch, especially its looks & size. However here in Great Britain O2 in all there wisdow decided not to launch the XDA mini so ended up sticking with my XDA II.
Now O2 tell me they will not be providing the XDA mini at all & instead they will be launching the I-Mate Wizard instead late in October or early November.
My thoughts on this go like this, don't really need the keyboard but I can take it or leave it, as long as it is well made & does not make the whole unit excessively fragile.
Built in WiFi, brilliant as I now don't have to have a half inch of my SD card hanging out of the top of my phone, great.
The CPU speed, this is the killer for me, Pocket Skype requires 400mhz or more according to the Skype website, & life without pocket Skype would be unbearable & needlesly expensive .
Does anyone else like me think tbere is a conspiracy going on with the providers strategicly selecting hardware to in one way or another stop us using Pocket Skype. Either the unit is to big to be comfortable & fashionable (the XDA IIi), No WiFi & two littfe memory (the I-Mate Jam), or worst of all not enough CPU speed to run pocket Skype (the HTC Wizard.
All this has firmly made me believe that the Holy Grail of PDA/Phones that I believe we are looking for is:
The Current I-Mate Jam with the following updatey:
128 Megs Ram
Built in WiFi
Windows Mobile 2005.
Wlth two added small hot keys
Slightly faster CPU.
No added keyboard to keep slze as small as is possible.
I am sure I am not the only one wbo feels this & I am sure I would just be one of the many tbousands in the stampede to get hold of this mythical but oh so wanted Devices.
So what is what is left for me to do, keep using my XDA II, hopefully managing to upgrade it to WM2003SE, in the meantime.
And if there really are no CPU upgrades when the Wizard is finally released, hock & sell all I can find to buy a. sim free 128 Meg I-Mate Jam, begrudgingly.
Love to hear other peoples comments on this matter jost to assure myself that I am not the only one who feels this way, or who can give me the dowload address of the combined WM2003SE ROM.
Kind Regards all, Ash'e
PocketPCItalia reviewed the Wizard on their site and were able to use Skype on it, they said they had no problems running it. I don't know the link to the article, but you can find the link on HowardForums somewhere in the Wizard/Qtek9100 threads.
Even someone on the WIKI has reported Skype works (though you need to turn off echo cancellation since this takes a lot of processing power).

Is this our Holy Grail.
Thanks guys it gives me some hope, but when push comes to I still feel we are all being asked to compromise, the XDA mini was an awsome bit of kit, in many ways far superior to the wizard, in size & processing power, I now have to take a cut in CPU power on my new upgrade phone instead of getting more power, which you would expect with the march of technology & all that.
So I ask the question again, I really do feel we nearly had our holy grail in the XDA Mini, & where left short in the last furlong, when a well thought out upgrade as descríbed in my previous posting was all it would have taken to produce what I feel would have been a benchmark style icon & a runaway sales success even more than it is anyway,
I really do feel that the HTC are trading of with the air time providers to delay Skype becoming the runaway cost saving mobile call preventing success it is going to be.
Kind Regards
Ash'e
My god someone with my same thoughts. I want a SPV M500 (XDA mini, jam etc) for the size but a slower processor ? and Orange want £180 to upgrade!!!!
Don't start me with that treating exsisting customers like new ones come on i've been with Orange for 10 yrs. But take a new contract and you get the phone for £80 or free! depending what traffic you choose. Stinks !!!!!!
WIKI: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Wizard
Also... someone posted on a forum about how much more efficient the OMAP processor is compared to the Intel series: http://www.smartdevicesdirect.com/forum/showpost.php?p=127&postcount=3
Very encouraging!
I've found my Holy Grail!
Well what a difference in I.T. life a couple of days makes, Two days ago I was panicking about having to upgrade to a HTC Wizard with all it's underlying, associated buíld/development problems, and now I am sat here with my own & what I feel is many other people's PDA Holy Grail in my hand.
In my hand I have a I-Mate Jam, but with a couple or three big differences:
One it has 128 Megs of Ram.
Two it has built in WiFi
Three it has a 2 GIG SD Card plugged in that works.
Now I might add that this is not my Jam, However the little known about UK based company that has produced it are quite willing to customise one for me if I can lay my hands on one in the next week or so.
They will also be offering it as a commercial service over the net as of November this year.
So my dear friends, fellow bookworms, frustrated burglers, affronted policemen or city gents with titly furled umbrella's, I am glad I have joined & listened to you all so many times but I am afraid I won't be joining you just yet in your wizardly new worlds now that I have found my own personal PDA Val-Hala. Long live the 128 Meg WiFi enabled Jam, who knows we may even be able to get WM2005 on it yet, that really would be something, & a right kick up the hind quarters for HTC.
Kind Regards Ash'e

hi
i bought pocket conquest over 1.5 yrs ago.. and the author of that app has not since released any new versions or even made a vga complaint version for ppc despite my pleading with him..
since i bought the game i own it.. therefor i was wanting to know if i post the game here can anyone with some knowledge of programming make it work normally on a vga ppc...im gearing up for htc universal
let me know
thanks
Hi mate
Just wanted to say that if you've bought something (such as an app or a game) it doesn't mean you own the whole thing including the source code; it means you've bought a license which I assume entitles you to run it on the platform for which it was intended.
Just thought you should know.
Cheers
Wayne
i may agree with you on that.. but what if the author promised continual upgrades with a vga version planned for near future to lure buyers then a year and a half goes by and nothing//no upgrades no vga compatibility
despite my requests..then what.. am i supposed to think the 20 bucks i spent on this game just went to charity? dont think so mate!
so if i can get some one or try me self somehow to get a vga compatible version of this game (the only one i play) for personal use ..i dont think thats asking for too much
Hi,
I'm planning to buy a T-Mobile MDA Pro in the near future, but I am somewhat doubting wether I should.
Toi me, the 640x480 screen made me decide to go for the MDA Pro instead of the MDA Vario (Wizard).
I currently own a Nokia 9500 device, but it doesn't quite cut it:
- It's fairly slow, starting up the calendar takes 2 to 5 seconds, even if I keep it loaded it will take at least 2 seconds to redraw the GUI.
- Symbian (esp S80) is very incompatible, most symbian progs are for the S60 series, and there isn't a lot to find for Symbian S80
- Programming on it sucks, Symbian C++ seems to date from pre-ansi, and it's a pain to work with. I have tried it but gave up, and a lot of people I spoke to said Symbian programming is hell.
- Then Java is incredibly slow. This is my only programming language available atm on this device, and a program, even just "hello world" will take at least 10 seconds to boot, during which the device will be completely locked.
- The camera quality is horrific.
- No jackplug for normal headphones, and no pre-made converter available. Also the Nokia pop-port headphones tend to get off very easily after which it keeps playing at the same volume, but trough the system speakers. (which will result in the whole bus looking at you! )
Anyway, this kind of summarizes what I pay attention to.
If I buy an MDA Pro, I will be using it to phone, games (emulators & OpenTTD), internet (loads of MSN too), and some programming. I will mostly use the calendar and notepad for School.
What I've heard from the MDA Pro that I don't quite like but can't confirm
- Supposedly slow
- No way to attach mass-storage (like USB) with a converter.
Now I would very much appreciate if you as owners of the HTC Universal could give me some advice on this. I really don't know if this device is as good as it sounds, or not. and if I buy it, it's too late because I will have to sell my old N9500 and I would have to sign for 1 year t-mobile :/
Thank you in advance,
TB
First: don't buy MDA Pro!!! Buy XDA Exec, even if it has all the same annoying bugs, at least it looks good!
Second: Answers to your questions can be EASILY found on this forum, even in posts from last week so please, take a time and respect other's time and read it through.
1) yes, it's not a speed demon, but there are some ways to make it acceptable
2) No, (at least not yet) you can't attach any external drives to the Universal.
But it's definitely much better than Nokia 9500!

Thanks for the info, I kinda got both of those answers before, but in some forum topics I didn't quite trust (they seemed very biased).
I was actually looking for other things that I might have overlooked, or something that I didn't like about my nokia that wouldn't be solved on a Universal...
XDA Exec is more appealing to look at, I admit, but can you get the tariff to match your needs? I found web n walk from T-mob to be the best all round tariff. Might be different for you and your needs, but please look beyond the colour of the phone case.

That's the reason I'm sticking to T-Mobile: It has "Pocket Internet Totaal" in the Netherlands for 10E a month, unlimited internet access capped to 64kbps
(While my current operator charges 3E per MB)
Universal/Jasjar/Qtek 9000 - too slow and heavy
I've had in the past the original XDA, then the II then the IIi.
I recently gave away my IIi and bought a Qtek 9000.
The Qtek 9000, after a few days trial, is going back!
In my humble opinion it's way too slow, and the size and weight are too much too carry it casually. As a mobile office for a patient touch-typist with tiny fingers it might be the business but it's not really a pocket creature.
The XDAIIi was perfect and I miss it! I'm going to order the Atom instead but would have no qualms about buying another XDA IIi if needs be.
Just my tuppence worth! No offence meant to Jasjar fans!
Best regards to all!
I would suggest to review again the installed applications.
From the beggining of this week I replaced Pocket Breeze with Calendar Plus and SPB Pocket Plus with VijayOKButt and VijayTrayLaunch and hey - now you can finally see that 520Mhz!!! What an improvement!! It's so much faster, especially the screen rotation. And you save about 4MB of memory not mentioning that these applications that I installed are free.
I still have my XDA IIi together with EXEC and sorry, but I just couldn't come back to QVGA  .
I've just received an extra battery for my Exec bought of Ebay, now I'm just waiting for Vijay to find out the way to enable the keys while the lid is closed and then I'll be one happy Exec user! (oh well, until the summer when I'll have to think how to carry it wearing shorts  )
Guys,
I'm looking into getting an Android (HTC Desire looks like the best Android machine but oh would love to be able to get hold of the Evo or similar).
A couple of grey areas I need to sort out are:-
1. Rich Text Format read & write.
2. Finance software.
Reference the Finance software, can anyone point me to having a read on what would be considered a suitable application that can allow me to use the finance program similar to how Cash Organizer on Windows Mobile works.
i.e. Have an index of Accounts, Register, Projects, Planner, Budget, Reports.
Accounts would list all the accounts.
Register would list all transactions within a particular account.
Projects ~ as it says.
Planner would list all future transactions so you can see at a glance what is coming out and what account it is going to.
Budget ~ as it says.
Reports ~ as it says.
My Brother who has a Desire tried briefly MyMoney but he told me it's not powerful enough.... however, I'd like to hear more on this from other users.
These two items are at the moment stopping me changing from Windows Mobile to Android.
If anyone can help it would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Beards
Anyone have any ideas??
Hi Beards
Currently I'm using Financisto. It has everything you mentioned except the planner part, which I miss too. But it links your money operations to location and you can see reports based on location. Check it out and tell me what you think. If you'll find a better app please let me know.

Many thanks Mantas for your contribution.
You mention there is no planner with this software. Unfortunately, this is one of the most important factors, as I need to be able to add all my monthly repeated outgoings so that the finance program will look at them on the specific date and automatically add the item to a named account.
At present all my testing has to be carried out on my Brother's Desire as I am still in the deciding factor on whether or not to ditch my Windows Mobile HD2 and move on up to Android.
Have you tried MyMoney or any other application.
I will however ask him to install Financisto and get him to show me what it can and can not achieve.
Thanks again.
Beards.

I'de be interested to hear your comments ~ especially if it does what I am trying to replicate from Cash Organizer.
Does it offer a 'Planner' so you can plan your spending's in advance and see from a Tab what date a transaction would be due to be added?

I've set mine up to include all my direct debits for the month and they are set to occur every month on the same date, if thats what your after.
There is a 30 day trial of it on the market place, search for Firewallet.

Yes, a direct debit planner is ideal.
I'll get my brother to download and test it out for me.

also check out easymoney. that's what I'm currently using after trying out several other options. I'm probably not as much of a power user as you, but I think easymoney can do what you want.
best of luck, and if you do find something perfect I'd like to hear your thoughts.

When I switched from WM to Android this was also one of my constraints.
Used to work with SPB Finance for years. It never really updated but did a very good job (planner included).
I have now found a good replacement in ClearCheckbook.com.
Is actually better as they also have a website account which syncs nicely with the Desire.
If by planner you mean repeating transactions then yes it is available.
Also have a good customer service .... quick at replying
Only downside is you need to pay for a subscription ....

Many thanks for the additional Apps to try.
My Brother is popping round tonight with his Desire in order I can try out a few of these titles.
I'll certainly post back which I found most comfortable in using.
Well, thanks once again Guys for all your input.... It has been most welcome and truly appreciated.
I've 'briefly' tried all the Apps you can install and can see both positives & negatives on all but admit these are based solely on my own personal requirements as one App may well suit one user very well whereas with another user it limits the usefulness.
Financisto ~ I found limiting to my requirements.
I was surprised there is no recurring payments or split transaction to name but two.
It was easy to navigate and in no time I was up and running with several accounts.
Location was different and useful. Definitely see a use for this.
Firewallet ~ I found the Bill Reminder (Planner) but it was limiting in the choices given.
Again I could not see any way to split a transaction and worse I could not find a category list.... Please update me if I got that wrong as again I only managed to test it out briefly.
EasyMoney ~ was by far the most professional App, both in it's design and operation of use.
There is so much you can play with this App and love.
Granted I personally would like more control over say individual category expense lists (ability to see at a glance how much each category has spent over a period of time) but of the three I tried EasyMoney held me captive longer.
With more time it could well be my choice... Next step is to purchase an Android and investigate it further myself.
ClearCheckbook.com ~ being an online accounts manager looks promising purely for the fact I can manage the accounts either on the Laptop or on the Android.
I did not get a chance to try this out; namely due to the fact I first need to create an account with ClearCheckbook and then see exactly what is transferred to the Android device.
It is one which I will investigate after I purchase my Android Phone so again my thanks Sjengie in bringing it to my attention.
Once again thank you all.
Without your input I would not have covered the ground I wish to undertake prior to my Phone purchase.
Cheers for the quick review. I'm after a finance app so I'll give some of these a try.
hi beards et al
I'm very much in the same boat as you & it is great to see I'm not the only one in this dilemma.
I will try easymoney again as I did not find it to be that good when I first looked into this a few months back.
I installed firewallet & got a quick response to a query from the developer re importing data so will try playing a bit more with that. (he advised me to create the accounts I want with a zero initial balance and then import transactions for each account one at a time. will definitely make living year to date transactions easier although I guess I'll have to add in all the categories too).
if you guys could share your methods of migrating your data across into yr new apps & any other tips & tricks that would be great!
also if there are enough of us cdnt we try lobbying a developer to tweak their app to our requirements or even get a WinMo dev to release an Android version of their app?
regards
Ansi

I'm also a SPB finance user on WM and I haven't found anything yet that does nearly such a good job for me on Android, (I've tried all those listed here and more) But another one to try is "Loot" it is free, there is a "pro" bolt on that costs money and adds a few extra features, for me it is one of the closest to SPB finance but still not close enough!
I'm currently still using my Touch Diamond 2 winmo phone for finance tracking (you'd be astounded how long the battery lasts if you leave it permanently in flight mode btw!)

Thanks... I'll mention this one to my Brother.
I know what you mean in not finding that perfect title.
Maybe it's because we are so much used to the WM application that we can only see what that particular title can give us.
I've loved using Cash Organizer for many years and I know no matter which Android application I find and use it's not going to give me the same as CO.
Having said this, I am sure there will be areas in Android where I did not realize I needed which I'll find and love.
As such I'm going to go in openly and receptive, to look only for the good in the program.
If I can't find the good then there's no point in afterward searching for the bad....
Now I need to focus my attention on getting my Android phone.
It's going to be difficult as my HD2 has for the past 6 months (or so) given me great service and I've been happy with the WM software.
But as we know, it's no point staying with a 'safe' product, you have to look outside the box to better your aims.
HTC Desire or Samsung i9000 Galaxy S
Don't you just love technology.
I don't know anything about this software, I just read a blog post about it...
http://www.mint.com/
Apparently its something from the iPhone that has just been brought to Android.
EDIT: Hmm...just been reading through and everything seems to be in dollars and how it "connects securely to nearly all US banking financial institutions". Could just be an American app.
EDIT 2: Just found this...
Does Mint.com support international banks?
Not yet. Currently Mint only supports US-based financial institutions. We hope to support financial institutions based outside of the US in the future.
Shame, looks pretty good.

http://www.mint.com/
Apparently its something from the iPhone that has just been brought to Android.
EDIT: Hmm...just been reading through and everything seems to be in dollars and how it "connects securely to nearly all US banking financial institutions". Could just be an American app.
EDIT 2: Just found this...
Does Mint.com support international banks?
Not yet. Currently Mint only supports US-based financial institutions. We hope to support financial institutions based outside of the US in the future.
Shame, looks pretty good.

Many thanks for the info and edited updates.... appreciated.
Well I took the plunge and 'Pre-Ordered' my first Android.
After a lot of deliberation I altered my choice in getting the Desire to now opt for the soon to be released Samsung GT-i9000 Galaxy S.
The problem is I will have to wait until the end of the month when shipment is expected.
So, to all who participated I won't be able to make any follow-up on the software titles until after this date, sorry.

Just wondering if there were any other developers willing to work on the A7 or (more preferably) the A7+. Dexter seems to have quit or lost interest his development permanently on either devices (I think he doesn't have a physical device to work with anymore, but I don't remember where I heard this). The last time he logged on to Tablet Roms was on "04-27-2012", and the last time he logged on to XDA was, well, today actually but he doesn't seem to have any interest in the eLocity forum section. He DID leave us with quite a lot of quality ROMs to work with, especially since the kernel was released for the + in March.
If there aren't any developers willing to work with the A7/A7+ because they don't have a physical device, I would willingly offer remote testing on my A7+ (AKA they give me the compiled ROM(s) or whatever and I try it out and give feedback). It just seems like such a shame to leave both devices with nothing better than a buggy (but still awesome) Honeycomb or a working stock 2.2. ICS seems like it would be doable, again especially since the kernel was released.
I will try to contact the user "chinabull" in the referred link as he seemed like he knew what he was doing when he said "It seems to have all the driver source code we need."
And I have also posted this over at TR.
EDIT- Turns out I can't send PM's to chinabull here, forgot about that. I'll find some other means of communication.
EDIT2- I'm crazy- the message got through; chinabull messaged back! And... he said that he already returned his A7+. So we've got no leads there.
If anyone knows some devs who haven't even heard of the A7/A7+ but might be willing to pick up where Dexter left off, please contact them or let me know so that I can contact them.

I would be willing to pony up CDN $20 towards the purchase of one for a talented (and dedicated) dev to work with. Here in Canada they are available as refurbs for about $90 from places like factorydirect dot c a ..
Anyone else want to donate some dinero ?
Cheers
Sorry for the late(ish) reply, I was out of town.
I don't have any money to donate, sadly, as I just spent it on the A7+...
But, like I said in the OP, if you are willing to work from afar we could do that.
It's a shame it's dead. Prices are around $90 in the US too. With all the china pads out there getting 2nd tier dual core processors with 600 res screens for very little more, it's easy to see why this would go by the wayside. One plus would be built in bluetooth which no china pad has at anything close to this pricepoint, and it probably has a better battery than many of them as well.
We've got someone over at Tablet Roms who will be working on the A7+! He is just waiting on the tablet to arrive.

I'd donate if you're talking about developing for the (older) A7. I still use mine and it would be nice to see a fresh rom for it.
I'd be in if I didn't just pick up the ZTE Optik from Sprint. Can't beat free and can't beat running JB via CM10. That 800 res is quite nice.
I'd greatly appreciate someone picking up work on the A7+. I still haven't flashed the newer firmware with the blank screen from sleep fix because I was holding out hope for a new custom rom. I'd have to root and install the outdated gapps again... And I'm sure we don't have unreasonably high expectations. I'd just like a rom without those awful elocity apps, doesn't black screen when I wake it, with google play, and with functioning hardware, anything more is welcome but uneccessary.
Ok his name is jam4 over at TR - check the thread for updates http://www.tabletroms.com/forums/elocity-a7-general-discussion/5362-any-other-devs-a7-a7.html
@dibmem jam4 is developing on the +, sorry
@frankwg83 yes he is working on honeycomb at the moment, but it sounds like your problems would be easily fixed... it takes 5 minutes and a flashdrive to install the Play Store and a root explorer and a 1-click-root app to get rid of the bloatware

Think he would develop on the A7 if he had the hardware? I'm the type of person who'd buy one second hand just to donate it to a willing and capable dev.

Maybe, I don't know. You'd have to ask him yourself - http://www.tabletroms.com/forums/members/jam4.html
"I am about 2 weeks out from releasing a working Honeycomb build for the A7+. Let me know how many of you are interested, either by pm or an email to [email protected]"
Everyone go PM or Email him!
So...2 weeks out? How'd that go?
Btw, the A7+ is at 1saleaday again for $70 this time. I'm willing to buy one and ship it to a developer if that's a hurdle since I'm pretty sure there are enough people out there that would want a solid Honeycomb or even Gingerbread firmware. I don't have the time/obsession to figure out the coding myself.
