pocket conquest - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

hi
i bought pocket conquest over 1.5 yrs ago.. and the author of that app has not since released any new versions or even made a vga complaint version for ppc despite my pleading with him..
since i bought the game i own it.. therefor i was wanting to know if i post the game here can anyone with some knowledge of programming make it work normally on a vga ppc...im gearing up for htc universal
let me know
thanks

Hi mate
Just wanted to say that if you've bought something (such as an app or a game) it doesn't mean you own the whole thing including the source code; it means you've bought a license which I assume entitles you to run it on the platform for which it was intended.
Just thought you should know.
Cheers
Wayne

i may agree with you on that.. but what if the author promised continual upgrades with a vga version planned for near future to lure buyers then a year and a half goes by and nothing//no upgrades no vga compatibility
despite my requests..then what.. am i supposed to think the 20 bucks i spent on this game just went to charity? dont think so mate!
so if i can get some one or try me self somehow to get a vga compatible version of this game (the only one i play) for personal use ..i dont think thats asking for too much

Do you want the official Windows Mobile 5 rom for magician?

http://www.msmobiles.com/news.php/3834.html
Forget it, now and ever...
they are not stuipd to give away WM2005 for free... they'll make us to buy it with new devices... just like WM2003SE.........
If Microsoft is serious about becoming the major supplier of operting systems for mobile devices (and with WM2005 I believe they are) they should definitely make it available for as many devices as possible. As long as the majority of PocketPC phone devices out there are using older versions of WM it will be harder for the operators to push new services that are only available in WM2005. And believe me, the operators do not profit from selling new phones, they benefit from charging for new services. Like push email, which I believe will be finally available in WM2005.
After hearing the news about my Magician, it's now on ebay and I will never buy any device relating to M$ ever again. To think, just ~6 months after it's release it's essentially unsupported is really crap. I've had no lucky, having been burnt previously by Compaq, Toshiba and now HTC I am going to now support the competition.
Unsupported? Relax man.. Just because they're developing a new OS they're not going to stop supporting the last one..
I sense that you're not the kind of guy that want a gadget to play with, but a stable phone. Personally I want to have a phone that I can tweak everything on. I'm rather used to buying cool things and growing tired of them in a couple of weeks, but I wasn't even tired of my iPAQ 5450 when I bought the Magician, and I doubt I'll stop playing with it until I buy my next MS based phone. Magician2?

they already did it.. Windows Mobile 5 is able to run on each mobile device that already runs wm2003..
Microsoft knows it.. BUT..M$ sells the software to HTC.. HTC then determines whether to make a rom for the older models (time and money consuming operation) or make new models (to sell) and forget the older ones.
What way do you think they'll prefer?
Maybe we'll see a magician running WM5 but this will be not an official rom.
The non Official roms are so much more stable.

I've been down this before. Notable disasters came from Toshiba (dropping support for the e570 completely even when it was still for sale, they only provided SP1 for PPC2002 even though other vendors went as far as SP4), Compaq and now this. In fact I have owned 5 PPC devices before and the experience has not been staggeringly improved from model to model to leave me planning to buy another MS based phone, that's for sure. It's also worth noting that I have an O2 branded model... where's their update??? I ended up putting the QTek ROM on mine, it's taking forever for any improvements to be released officially via O2. Also, I have been reading on places like msmobiles that no Pocket PC Phone is planned to have a WM2005 update released. I take this as the market treating expensive smartphones just the same as they treat the bottom end of the market, which just doesn't wash with me. This thing is marketed as a portable computer and in many ways it is. I refuse to buy a marginal improvement to this PPC Phone in order to just get a slightly newer software experience.
I honestly don't know how you guys can just gleefully sit by, let it happen, and just plan what to buy next. I actually love gadgets, I have a PSP (which has already had a decent ROM update I might add and won't simply be superceded in 6 months ), an iPod (which just had another software update) so I expect more from such cash outlays. If you enjoy the state of things as they are, then all power to you I guess.

I am just curious.. Why is it Microsoft's fault? I mean, they make the OS and sell it to the individual phone manufacturers to be tweaked for their specific devices. Shouldn't you be mad at HTC, Qtek, I-Mate and any other carrier/company that decides not to create a rom for that phone?
This isn't like a desktop OS that is for sale in the local computer store but was just not made to run on old computers. I am guessing WM5 will run on the Magician (especially those with the 128MB upgrade) however it is HTC that has decided to push sales of new phones then update existing lines with WM5.

Latest News and picture of Shift ! No GPS and Phone for sure out the of Box !

Hi guys, there are more news on the HTC shift, it has been official presented on the 28th in Taiwan by HTC. This is the official retail package and it's 100% what you will get in retail store.
Here is a link for some picture: http://www.mobile01.com/topicdetail.php?f=224&t=508252&last=4825702
For those people who can't see the picture, see my attachment of how to show the picture.
My HTC contact was there and he has tested the device, i specific ask him to test on phone and gps function, he report back saying that there is 100% no phone and GPS inside the Shift.
I know a lot of people will say they seen photo of GPS or phone, but that me remind you this, this is the latest official retail version, all device before are prototype. Yes, i have also seen the picture on FCC website showing there is GPS inside, that's the reason I asked my friend to test it! And let me say this again, there will be no GPS or Phone out of the box.
Our hope will be for the developers here in XDA to crack the function to enable full windows mobile, phone, and GPS.
p.s. Another news i got from my friend, HTC is saying the SD slot will only support up to 2GB.
can you getem?
Hi Wu, how are you doing, just wondering like you got me my Dopod, can you get hold of a shift for me? Thanks Dude

Hi Faisal, i am fine thank you. I hope you are doing well too.
Yes i can get the Shift for you, it's currently on pre-order and the device will be available on the 4th of Feb. Price is a bit lower then anywhere else and you will get bonus with it such as GPS and extra battery....etc.
If you are interesting in getting one, please PM me and we can discuss more there !
Hmm.. i´m ordered a sample from our german distributor but now i´m thinking about to cancel the order. We thinking long time ago about a integration of the shift in our company network for our VIP customers. But without gps, without Mobile and without LAN (or can i install Windows over netboot over WLAN??) i should search better for a other solution. there is not really a innovation inside. maybe the better solution with same features is a Toshiba Portégé R400 Series laptop..
but we will see the next on cebit i hope. maybe a other manufactor. we support htc from scratch with their first devices. after over 7000 devices and the problems within it´s time to test a other manufacor i think. maybe asus, samsung
Pre-Order all gone
Please do not ask me any more for HTC Shift, all the 200 unit for pre-order is gone already, first shipment will be on the 4th of Feb, if there is any more stock available, i will let you all know asap.

weird comment .. I don't see any device being a half of what the Shift is ... and even without GPS, without Phone, without LAN and without full WM6 .. the shift is still the best device on the market for my needs.
WLAN will replace LAN over the time.. so I don't think it is a big mistake, but it could have been great
GPS "should" be in the SHIFT but not in WM6 (GPS in Vista).. but the choice is not perfect (who whant a GPS that is working only 2 hours..)
The Shift is not the perfect device, for everyone, but we have to see the real potential of the shift before crying for any lack of feature.
HTC has announced a "shift" like device with 5" .. maybe it will have GPS, Phone, etc.. we will see
weird - yes of course.. ;-)
i´m think it´s a new strategy of HTC to make devices without completly knows features.
maybe, LAN is only for Enterprise Customers like us with over 200tsd Users worldwide interesting, (automatic Software distribution) but Phone Functionality is interesting some more users. Is not really practicable with a 7" Device, but with BT Headset and Speak Control - why not. GPS is only a nice Addon for freaks like me, they travel around the world.
But overall: you´re need really a device like this? (i call that "the innovation factor" inside ;-)
But it´s really needed? Sometimes i think about Asus EEE PC, there a many Websites with modding this mini laptop, it´s crazy. when i have a look to this modding sites I see one:
they have much fun with modding her cheap Asus EEE Laptop.
But after 6 Years with HTC devices in all colors I ask me sometimes:
where is the fun - as i start with it..
;-)

Well well well .. yeah I really need a device like this. I hate laptop (it's almost like bringing my desktop tower ...) because it's too big for me (even 11" ones). The shift has the perfect size for being a good laptop to use everywhere (including when travelling, when being on the bed, ...).
A laptot is not silent at all... mine is making too much noise.. almost the same as my desktop ! And it's warm.. warm... too warm ! I can't keep it on my knees more than 10 minutes ... WAW ! Totally useless to have a laptop.
The shift is quite, cold (not warm I mean ) and I can put it in my pocket (yeah I can... really ... I can ! .. have I tried... not yet.. but I have look the size and it fits well in my pocket... yeah.. really !).
I have bought an HTC Touch to work without any computer with me ... and .. ouch.. impossible to work with the Touch ! No real application on Windows Mobile .... Mobile Office? NOOOO it's too horrible ! On the shift I can use Windows Vista to work .. mmh so nice !
And what about the size .. 40Go is enough to work everywhere I want .. i can plug a VGA cable to my TFT to have a real screen .. and I can do this in so many room (I'm a student, so believe me... I do see a lot of monitor that just want to put their VGA cable in something !).
The only thing that can be bad was the keyboard, but I have tried it.. and WAW it worked well ! Not as well as my own Logitech Media Keyboard with about 80 words per minute... but I can type about 60 words per minute... enough when I'm not @ home.
I do believe the shift is the only solution for me right now, and I'm waiting a little to see all the real features available on the "retail" shift.. but I have great hopes in it !
Supposedly the Shift has the Qualcomm MSM 7200 chipset in it which has voice and gps built in. I can not see them "removing" that from the chipset. It's just a matter of time before this device get's "unlocked" to it's fullest potential.
I still do not see the marketing strategy of HTC leaving these features "out"... You would think that every device you release you would want to sell the hell out of it no? Are they that cocky that they believe they will be around forever to keep selling up their products to us?
i.e. Model Shift II including GPS!!! More money!!!

hard to know... but it's sure that the strategy seems completely wrong .... maybe they want us to buy a Phone and a GPS ... but it's not the right choice.... many people will not buy a HTC device because of it...
It is an odd strategy but not the first time they've done this stuff. Still I think most people who are inclined to buy Windows Mobile devices usually research them. A WinMo device is alot more advanced than your cpl hundred dollar nokias, I think when people are spending over $500 on a phone they are pretty inclined to do some research.
With that said im pretty sure HTC know if they release a shift w/o GPS or phone enabled, good people here can hack it and enable (remember the P3600) and then its on the users onus if things mess up. Actually sounds like a good strategy when you think about it, they only have to meet target "X" in terms of standards for "X" features. If end users decide to try activating features "Y" then they do so at their own risk...

i don't think it's smart.. because about 50% of intersted people will not buy the shift only because of missing GPS and Phone.

[REQ] aplication to play iphone games??

hey i was just wondering since iphone has such great g-sensor games would it be possible to create something like a aplication where we would be able to install iphone games and play them on our htc diamond it would be prety cool thanks
i was thinking of something like a iphone game emulator?? what do you guys think would this be possible
Well OsX working on a pc is pretty common so...No, seriously, that would be so "in their face"... Anyone of you talented guys here want to cook this up on a lunch breake?

Woud be great indeed to get the only thing the iphone makes better than the rest!!
I mean game wise..... there is quite a huge difference huh
so is anyone going to make something like this??
I kind of laughed when i read this thread title, i doubt this is possible, even through emulation. Miniature version of OSX vs WindowsCE5... whens the last time you seen a non ported OSX app on XP or Vista?

just when we thought that we have no more gps or mp3 lags, no battery shortage, no album tf3d questions in short we have the perfect device our friend here remind us the cruel truth......we can not play iphone games on our device.....
i would definitely love to have iphone's MonkeyBall on my diamond!!
so is anyone willing to try this??
The iPhone has a faster cpu and a lower resolution.
So how do you think you will be able to play any game written for the iPhone on the diamond?
TDO
but, the iphone have 3d gpu??
Are You On Something?
Tweak Here guys and gals, just wanting to offer my 2cents. First, I think the Diamond is all around a better device than the iPhone. But we wont get into a debate on that now, but I want to make a point here.
If you go to the iTunes App Store , or the Jailbreak Apps , what do you see. There are 50 games (if not more) to every single utility or hack. Now if you come to XDA , PPCgeeks , or any other windows mobile site, what do you see? Now there are 100 (prob may more) utilites & hacks to every game!!!
Why? I understand it on the iPhones side of things. Most wont jailbreak since the App Store is open, and Apple wont let any hacks on the store, and the few utilites they allow, are monitored closley, and can't do anything to compromise apples control over the device. Therefore, all of the 3rd party iPhone Developers, put all there time into games!!
Now, what about the WM developers. With the release of the diamond, having the great accelerometer, and a dang decent screen, why not put all of that time into developing games that compare to the iPhones, or at least more time!!
But I just wanted to raise the question. Thanks for listening. See you guys later

Still it would be really good if we could get an iPhone Game Emulator for now, as its games have awesome graphics e.g this game see for urselves
I see people arent getting at what kukuriku was suggesting.
there is a very, very small chance of it happening. take, for example, how long it has taken andoid to get on the diamond. and android is an open source OS. the time and effort it would take would be immense and, in short, not worth it. if you need the iphone software so much, then im afraid to say that you bought the wrong device.
emulation is out of the question - too slow, especially for games. the diamond doesnt even have the correct aspect ratio screen either.

lolx... im getting what he says, im a WM Developers + Cook, and i didnt buy the wrong device, i hate APPLE and am a gr8 HTC LOVER+FAN, but the thing is tht WM is capable of much more then what we are using it for, im a COLLEGIATE and lack time else maybe i would have asked some1 else to do it and aspect ratio might not be such a big problem
well
I'm sure an OSX emulator would be possible, but it would probably run very slow on our 528mhz processors. Maybe when Snapdragon and Tegra get more popular it would be more viable, but even then I don't think anybody will take the time to do it.
However,
In just over a month the WinMo Marketplace is supposed to be launched, I think when we see an app store for WinMo coming pre-installed on all new devices there will be a lot of the *fun* type apps that *regular* consumers want on their phones.
As of now average joe doesn't come on to XDA-Dev often, if at all, and most of the people writing applications are doing it for free because they're developing apps they want, not apps they're planning on making money off of. Don't worry guys, the Marketplace is coming soon!

Whats up with the games available for our device?!?

I have been irritated with this for a while now -sure there are a bunch of games for windows mobile, but they are not up to par with our HD2's specs....it is disappointing. This is one of the reasons I am patiently awaiting to see android on the HD2, since the android market seems to have better games....sure games are not the sole reason I got the phone, but figuring that it can perform so much better than what they provide it- it is frustrating...
Well here is my theory on this:
Maybe it has something to with the fact that the HD2 came out recently (the USA ver just came out last month, the other came out less than a year ago I believe)
...a good supporting example is the iPhone, I remember when I first had the iPhone it did not have any games and not to mention it did not even have an app store for a while....but now look at it -sure it is practically completely inferior to our device, but it has a large dev community which leads to some nice apps/games (sure there are a lot of stupid ones, but you can look over those because their 'good ones' are better than our 'good ones' --besides the emulators, mind you).
I am just holding onto hope that the winmo community will be putting out nice games soon since devices similar to ours are going to be more common...also I have the hope that there will be android on our device one day which hopefully will bring some more options as well....
Other wise I guess I will have to develop my own?.....
Your thoughts/Ideas?
It's not just the games that's lacking, it's every other apps available on the market for windows versus android is lacking..
I cannot imagine that windows have a headstart of >5yrs in windows mobile while android is like <3yrs, but ANDROID have apps and games that are useable, fun and good and free or cheap to buy (JUST LIKE THE IPHONE apps)!.
What's up with microsoft ? I don't know. One thing's for sure, I will buy the android when my telco contract is up or when I sell my HD2 whichever is ealier.
See, I am still within the 30 days where I am able to return my HD2....(until the 24th that is...) but I do not think I will do so,but I am thinking about it a lot...
I do not think I will do so for a few reasons - It is actually one of the best phones out right now, also it is a lot nicer than my past phone (iPhone 2g) except for the issue discussed in the OP ...also I have not used my chance to upgrade for a few years and so I thought I might as well take advantage of it because I could have upgraded twice by now with how long I waited for a new phone ... now my final reasons for keeping it: there's nothing better for T-Mobile (for the price I got it for at least) and that I have a lot of hope of what I stated in the OP about games coming some day otherwise android will hopefully come through...
I tried to get the Nexus One, but I have a family plan and would have to pay about 500$ for it which is ridiculous to me.
BTW wj888- what do you mean 'I will buy the android..."...sounds like you are referring to a device named 'the android' which there is none (of which I know of at least)....
thoughts/Ideas?
i think that now the HD2 is available in the states that there is a good chance more apps will appear. however, it could be that developers are waiting for windows 7 on the phone and then microsoft may well provide more interest in growth.
Mike
I wonder if there is anyone with an opposing theory or something to change my mind...
return
Just return it, get, or wait for something that will make,& keep you happy. Don't second guess yourself, & wish you had waited for new device.. This will be around after the others come out, look them all over, then decide,,,, I love mine!!

With WinPhone 7 coming soon, you're not going to see as much development for WinMo. I wouldn't expect many more games being made for it. And don't plan on an android port anytime soon. If you don't like the device now, return it while you can. There are going to be plenty of comparable phones in the coming months. If you don't like it now, you're gonna be wishing you weren't stuck with it for 2 years when you keep seeing all these other phones coming out that you wish you could get. Remember, WinPhone 7 is coming at the end of the year with X-Box Live support and much more gaming options. If gaming is that important to you, you should wait for something else. I'm happy playing all the old playstation games on my HD2... that's plenty of gaming for me.

How? Is there an emulator available?
Edit: Found on google FPSEce
yeah I like everything about it except the fact of the non existent games. So I think I will return it and have to return to using my iPhone 2g (sigh...haha)...
is there anything out there with a 1Ghz+ CPU that works with Tmobile USA 3G? ...besides the Nexus One ?
Also, I was thinking if I keep it, I can try and sell it then use that for another phone? I guess that is not really a smart idea though right ?....
As for all of you who say you really love the phone, do you not game much on your phone to care about this issue ? What do you do with your phone, if I may ask?
I am in a tough spot ....
also another thing which might change some minds : I upgraded in the store, now Online it still will let me upgrade the same line to another phone again as if I did not even upgrade at all? Is that usual?... I Was excited when I noticed this, but I am not sure if this is how it usualy is or whats going on....so if I return it , I may loose the chance to upgrade twice ? IDK
Please advise....
Well to reply to ur question what i do with it (absolutely love everything about it)
besides using it for texting, calling, mailing i watch youtube movies, series with coreplayer. and i also play games. i am going to explain what.

Tripplix
Worms
Mini Galf - Wacky World
Flight Commander
Prince of Persia
Pocket Mini Golf 2
Totem Star
Splinter Cell Conviction
Spinballs
You just gotta look for them, good places to look at the EA mobile store and Gamesloft - just to name a couple.
Quite a few are appearing on the Market Place now.
I am looking for more graphic intense games...at least some which would put some of that nice hardware to good use....
Those flash games look decent -I will try them out...
I dont know what to say I may just return my HD2 and wait for something else to come out....? Does anyone have anything to add/ mention in that regard ?

If you want simple and fun games WM is not for you simple as that. I love the fact that I can play old PSX games on my phone as I've found most of the games available on the iPhone below par. Sure they might look better, but the bottom line is that great graphics not a good game make. FF VII still blows anything available on either android or iphone away. Tekken 3 runs pretty good as does Gran Turismo 2 and I got em both for under 10€.
Doubt we'll see great mobile games on a windows based phone until WP7.

yeah I like everything about it except the fact of the non existent games. So I think I will return it and have to return to using my iPhone 2g (sigh...haha)...

Buy a PSP if you want a games console, it's a phone, and a very powerful one at that. With a handful of addictive games, and the entire PSX/NES/SNES/GBA back catalogue I am very happy with the games avaliable, not that I use it for playing games that's why I have a PS3, that I never use... But that's another story.
There are tons of games for Windows Mobile, and part of them work fine in HD2. So far, I have installed more than 20 games on it and I am still going for more. A lot of games have WQGA version which is good for HD2. Even VGA version is fine.
well come to Windows Mobile world.
For those who wants a good app store....buy Iphone, Android devices or Palm pre webOS.
MS dont want HD2 owners upgrade to WM7, because they want we live in dead WM app store.
PS: But we have a lot o based stock roms....nice.....we can flash HD2 with a diferent version rom, every days...lol
Doesnt anybody have the intelligence anymore to RESEARCH before going out and buying a product? Another thread where someone saw the HD2 and said "Oooh, shiny!) and bought it without having a clue what OS it runs or how it works and now moans about lack of this, lack of that. All that seems to matter to people now is whether it is free or cheap, I wonder how many people would be willing to work for free?
I despair of the human race, stupidity seems to be the new Black!

wth are you talking about this thread has nothing regarding that I "knew nothing about the OS"...
this is just another post of some condescending person looking to talk down to someone when they do not even read the specific issue...stop trying to up your post count....
any ways -I was well aware of windows mobile and I had it before in the past actually, but man I thought the games would be improved for the most part they are still the same type of games provided in WM5 - 2D cheap excuse for an 'arcade' game...they are actually the same kind of games found on every other phone out there (just about!)...believe me I had many phones and I may be young but I have seen these types of games on phones for ages and honestly since this is such a big improvement in a phone then I would have though the games would suit the hardware but no...so I guess I will be returning the HD2 and waiting for something else to happen in the phone scene...

The main issue is that there are so few WinMo devices with specs this good... HD2, LG Expo, maybe a couple other. It's not really worth it to design a game that makes use of this hardware when it won't work with most WinMo phones.
But actually, I'm VERY happy with the gaming options for the HD2 with being able to play almost any psx, nes, snes, gba, etc game out there with multitouch onscreen controls. What other phone can do that? It's the only phone I can play final fantasy 7,8 & 9 on at full speed... so even if i was a big gamer, i would still pick the HD2 for the huge library of games it can emulate VERY WELL. I wouldn't want to much more gaming on my phone... I'd get a PSP for portable gaming if I was a big gamer.
not to say I am a big gamer though, just when I sit down to play some games I would like there to be some nice games available besides emulators which I can play on my PC and otherwise I do not mind not playing them so much....
This phone is already outdated as many have said and when wm7 comes out there may be people developing games for that (which would not work with previous WM devices...) so I believe by the time that comes around I will probably go and purchase a new phone since I will return this one and have some patience for a while....
and honestly, why would I spend 2-300$ on a phone, then spend another 2-300 on a PSP, then the PSP I would have to buy each game (no free games)....so I would be spending more when in actuality I am not looking for such an intense gaming experience just one sufficient to the hardware provided would do fine....
The only thing it has are emulators which I am sure other 1ghz phones can run decently as well....
In the end if I return my phone while I have the chance I can always come back and buy it again later on when something good comes up....

[Q] [DEBATE] Why is MS issuing the activation codes?

Hi,
I would like to start discussion, what do you thing, why is the MS still issuing tha activation codes for WP7. Nobody here could think, that in MS are so stupid, that they did not noticed, that there is successful port of WP7 to HD2 and that they are now issuing the activation keys to those phones.
I am thinking about those possible reasons:
they do not want to piss regular customers, who could have this problem with the activation
they want to have higher marketshare, so they are just overlooking the issue
they will shut all those WP7 and live ids in next update, so they do not care right now
What do you think guys?
I think option 1.
would go for option 1.
only marketshare that would go up is web browser marketshare... they do not sell more phones this way.
what could be a fourth option is that microsoft actually uses the XDA community to test every security system in their OS for loopholes and bugs in an early stage so they can fix all that (without having to look for the problems theirselves) and make sure people are unable to hack their OS when the OS goes into a more complete and final form as the OS is now only in 7.0 and not even released globally.
still option 1 is more likely. they possibly do not have a database with all s/n or imei numbers for all (sold) wp7 phones so they are unable to check.

Its Option 1. I remember reading on their support site that on some cases that the verification fails (the did not mention the possible reasons) on any windows phone out of the box.

Definitely #1. When I called technical support, it seemed like the woman I talked with had done this before and she knew exactly what I was talking about. She asked if I was using WP7 and when I said yes, she even said "Oh, well that's why you need an activation code." I think I read somewhere that even if you're using a WP7 device, doing a hard reset on the phone would cause you to need a new activation code, so it's not out of the ordinary for them to receive calls about it I suppose.
#3 is something I'm a bit worried about in the back of my mind, but the thing is my phone identifies itself as an HD7, so I'm not sure if MS would be able to tell it wasn't. I also don't think it's worth their time and money to look into the issue since in the bigger picture, the amount of users who haven't bought an "offical" WP7 device is relatively small I would think. Another thing is they're now getting money from me, since while I have absolutely no interest in buying a new WP7 device, I'm now buying apps/games and will probably buy some music through Zune (really digging the software).
I don’t think there is a downside for MS at the moment. From what I understand, the HD2 is one of the few (last gen) phones capable of running WP7 and the more people that use WP7 the sooner that apps that are popular for other OS's will be created for WP. More money for MS but more importantly, quicker adoption by the general public because the marketplace will quickly catch up with Apple and Droid.
From my limited use of WP7, it’s a great addition. Different thinking in its design but a distinct lack of business and productivity tools in the marketplace is going to hold me back from a using this as my daily OS.
Not a bad thought
I say #1 for sure, though i fear #3 to be honest ;-)
I am highly impressed with Windows Phone 7, and Microsoft may have realized that someone like me may make a WP7 device their next phone purchase.
1 and 2, please not 3.
It's obviously 1 as there have been several actual WP7 handsets needing activation also - that said, there is nothing stopping them from killing all the HD2 codes at any given time. The IMEI still identifies the phone as a HD2 rather than an HD7 so whenever they feel the need...
They could also go as far as banning your Live account from any future access to Zune and Xbox Live due to this - both the one used on your phone and the one you [may have] given them during your phonecall.
I was thinking #2, but i'm reading more and more people now not getting codes. therefore i guess it's #1.
will be very interesting to see what happens when the update comes along. ?will you dare to try it? will marketplace and apps stop working even if you don't install it?
Why should MS actually have a problem with 5 to 10 000 enthusiats that are flashing WP7 on their HD2's? I don't think that will affect sales of new WP7 phones as the HD2 is not produced anymore anyway.
ill take number 3 for 500.00 Alex kidding
I truly believe MS is going to lock us out from Live services similar to the same issue the xbox 360 with a custom FW have, they do a massive band of xbox 360 systems from xbox live service a couple of times a year.
Although we are not pirating any games such in the case of xbox 360 flashed with custom firmware (and yes some people are going to say some use their flashed xbox 360 to backup their games I truly don't care, save it for your mama) just modifying our phones but it seems to me as one way for them to screw us over.
1 & 2 & - I fear - even 3

You do know that Microsoft and HTC along with the rest of them actually read everything posted on these XDA forms.
Why did HTC stop giving out sd cards when everybody started saying there cards were faulty!
Think about it!!!!!!
Russ
Don't be too paranoic. A few years ago Microsoft politely asked XDA not to allow the posting of custom ROM's on it's servers. NOTE: They didn't ask for discontinuation of ROM development, although they could do this legally. They just asked that the ROM's are not hosted on XDA. MS knows this site very well since Day 1.
Same goes for HTC. You look at it in another way: XDA is a perfect testing field for all sorts of things. Here you have a bunch of relatively competent enthusiasts that are ready to do almost everything to theis phones That's a very valuable resource for companies like MS and HTC.
Think about HTC. Their phones are always hackable unlike the phones from other brands. Have asked yourself why this is the case?

That is correct. You have hit the nail on the head. HTC & Microsoft like what the XDA Devs do with these ROMs, as it will enhance them to produce better ones. Just think back a few months, they were going to release the wp7 update for the HD2. And then not? Why.. Probably to see if the Devs could do a hack. Also why would microsoft make some tools available to enhance these ROMs. Yes you are correct, they like what's being accomplished.
Its the same with the activation keys, they now have none stop requests!! But they will issue them. Will have to wait and see if the new update works, or crashes it?? I will give it a try.
Russ
A 'carphone warehouse' insider has informed me that they recieved a bulliten stating that some batches of HTC phones were shipped prior to being activated by MS.
MS apparently have a list of new activation numbers for these handsets but may not have a record of any IMEI numbers etc (he wasn't sure how much they knew about the handsets)
Basically it seems that authentication will also fail on some original HTC WP7 handsets (like the HD7) so MS are prepared to issue those with new activation numbers.
Personally, when I gave my IMEI for my HD2 to get the activation code I changed the last 3 digits and they still said 'ah..yes it's a HTC phone, is that correct?', so might be a good idea to base a made up IMEI on a real one.
The way I see it:
This community and the readers are the one who have spent their time to make their phone compatible with Microsoft so they can use MICROSOFT more. They are saving Microsoft marketing money and expanding its share and generate revenue through apps for them.
Microsoft has always been smart with this. They let the piracy of Windows in ASIA to slit through on basis of expansion of market share. Microsoft should know better than anybody else, why most of the planet use windows,
Microsoft has got the label of M$ but in all fairness, they have been nice considering the power and their dominance. They have special discounts for students, their OS provides the opportunity for people to build any system they want at very very affordable costs.
Their Windows Mobile 7 app development kit virtually has made it simple for app developers to develop apps and make money.
(obviously, they win but at the same time, reduces the production budget for start up folks)
I bought 4 copies of Windows 7 PRO x64 through student discount. Who else would give me so much discount to enable me to buy so many fantastic products?
sorry for the rant and fanboyism. I thought it was justified.
ever thought that maybe they don't know about the hd2 running wp7, my friend had to contact ms for activation for his hd7...
