A500 First day of ownership thoughts...

so after a couple of months of reading reviews and post by owners, i decided to pull the trigger last night.
after a 3-4 hour charge, i jumped right into it.
+very fast boot up.
i played with Honeycomb 3.0 before updating it to 3.1. i noticed that 3.1 had bootup & keyboard sounds, while 3.0 had none.
+the chassis is really nice. i loved the look. reminds me of my HTC HD2. rock solid.
+YouTube plays nice. i can already tell that i'm gonna be using this for mainly YouTube. but it really sucks that some videos won't play because it considers the A500 a "mobile device".
+web browsing is good so far. it even ran southparkstudios.com
uhm...that's all i can think of right now for pluses...
...and here's my cons with the tablet:
-it loses wireless connection when the screen goes to "sleep". but this apparently is a VERY common bug and issue with A500 owners. very annoying that i have to restart the wireless to get connection back. this is the main issue i have with it so far. my phone doesn't lose connection to the internet with the screen goes to "sleep".
-there's a dead pixel, but that's easily fixed by exchanging it for a new unit.
-lots of my games that i would normally use on my phone are completely useless because it still maintains a phone sized image. OR it just force closes.
-No Netflix app. although i read somewhere on the internet that there's supposed to be an official Netflix app coming out. but there's no way to confirm the validity of that statement.
-No Hulu
-No dedicated Facebook App
i still have lots to try out still like the HDMI out, the functionality of the USB ports, Divx/MPG/Avi compatibility, and MP3 sound quality. plus i want to see if i can install an NES/SNES emulator and play it via a bluetooth gamepad.
i noticed there's LOTS of ports...which means more possibly entry points for dust. which can be bad. ACER (or someone else) should make plastic/rubber port bootcovers to remedy that.
i haven't tried to install a custom ROM. nor have i tried to root it.
i'm looking forward to the 3.2 update. i'm hoping that'll fix all (or at least some) of the cons.

As for the internet connection, mine with stock rooted US rom (.13) doesn't do that. I have always internet after sleeping.
For the phone apps no scaling you can use Spare Parts and uncheck the compatibility box.
Facebook you can side load it, it works nice on my tablet.
Hulu is a common problem with all the tablets, you need a fixed flashplayer apk.

Root the device, for now try virtuous Xoom with 3.2 honeycomb. Once rooted netflix is fairly easily installed. Also, you can set the browser as "desktop". Mine has never lost wifi for any reason other than range.

My a500 have never lost WiFi during sleep.
There is a Tablet app "Friend Me" for Facebook and it is very good!
"Spare Parts" with "compatibility mode" disabled will make all apps full screen!
Never had a problem with a game (except those made or specific hardware)
Hulu and Netflics I can't comment! Living in Europe!

+1 to that - this is not a bug, this is a setting you can change, and is documented in your user manual.
Click apps. Settings. Choose the "wireless and network" menu. Click wifi settings. Click "Wifi disconnect policy" and modify it.
"Bug" fixed.

yikes i almost forgot about netflix
Netflix works great on the a500 - you need to root via Iconiaroot (assuming you are using 3.1) and then simply follow the instructions located here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076150
Just follow the instructions - either use root explorer with system mounted r/w or snag Acer recovery installer from market, install cwm, apply the patch.zip and you are done. Netflix looks great on a 10.1

hmm... seems like the consensus is that everyone doesn't have that issue. maybe my situation was a one time only thing.
but let me explain to you what i was doing when it happened:
i got tired of the Market app on the A500. but i'm also tired of the Market app on my HD2 as well. the new updated Market doesn't show you everything, it just shows you like the top ten for every category. anyways... so i put the tablet down (i didn't turn it off or put it in stand-by) and sat in front of my desktop and used the web browser version of Market. i probably spent about 15 minutes or so sending apps to install onto my device. when i went back to check on the tablet, the screen was off. i pressed the power button to bring the screen back on and the Wi-Fi was showing that it was 'OFF'. the only way to bring it back was to restart the Wi-Fi.
so yeah... it was strange. but like i said, maybe it was a one time event.
maybe i'll just set the timeout for higher like 60 mins.

Nope.
You issue is a result of your settings. If you want your a500 to keep a active wifi connection while the screen is sleeping, you will need to go into your settings menu and tell your a500 to not drop the connection while the screen is off.

Wifi is my only complaint so far and I am experiencing the same thing. Mine is set to never disconnect wifi, and it doesn't. It shows wifi connected the whole day under battery usage. However, when the screen goes off it seems to drop the wifi and I must disconnect/reconnect to get it working again when I turn it on. Not every time but it is frequent.
To be clear:
When I turn the screen on, wifi is unusable until I go into settings and toggle it off and back on.

Are your wifi settings -> wifi disconnect settings set to not drop the connection when screen is off? Screen set to never sleep will not keep a inactive wifi connection alive - you need to go into wifi and networks catagory of settings and modify the disconnect policy.

I am confused.
Are you saying you have wifi disconnect policy set to "Never disconnect", but are having issues holding a wifi connection after turning the screen off?
Please provide more information, very hard to troubleshoot something this vague.

There is a difference between WiFi turning off and WiFi disconnecting.
Here is what I'm seeing on mine:
1) With my tab on, WiFi connected, browser working, I can ping my tab from my desktop.
2) Shut down browser, put tab to sleep, wait an unknown timeframe (lets say 15 minutes).
3) Wake tab, see WiFi is still connected, do nothing else. Start pings from desktop in a continuious loop, pings all fail, despite WiFi connected on tab.
4) Start browser on tab, browser connects to test website, and suddenly pings respond on desktop.
So, it appears that while the WiFi on the tab stays connected, it does not actually go 'active' and start handling data until an app needs it, such as the browser.

No shortage of apps that can work around this - I don't understand why you want a network connection when nothing is using it, but to each their own

The wifi issue you describe is not a bug. It is an android feature to reduce battery drain. If an app or connection is not in use, it is cached until a process is called.then the wifi connection becomes active. You can disable wifi sleep policy but you will see a battery drain if you set it that way.
Remember the two most important parts of a tablet are the screen and the battery. A poor screen or poor battery life will kill sales for that tab faster than apple can draw up a lawsuit.

Well described.
Not sure why a user would want to bypass this - the moment an app requests data, as long as wifi disco policy is set - network connection is set to active.

Untrue. I have used a number of applications that when launched, do not 'activate' the connected WiFi. Two for example, 'QuickSSHd', which is a SFTP and SSH server, and 'IP Webcam' a webcam server.
Wake up the Tablet, and see that the WiFi shows a connection. Fire up either of these server applications, and try to connect to them. No go...
Now go fire up the browser, which of course makes an 'outbound' connection, the WiFi 'activates' at that time, and suddenly both of the aforementioned server applications can be connected to.
In other words, when the 'conected' WiFi is asleep, it takes an 'outbound' app to wake up the wifi. An app that is waiting for an incoming connection never sees one until an outbound app wakes up the wifi.
NOTE: This behavior is NOT seen on my Android Gingerbread phone, running the same apps with the same sleep settings.

It is not the video seeing the tablet as a mobile device.
It is your settings.
You can fix it very easily.
2 things to do.
open your browser
in the URL window (address bar) type about:debug and hit enter
it seems nothing happens but it adds a debug in settings
Next
On the very top right click the 4 lines with an arrow.
Click settings and on the left side click "advanced"
click "Viewing Mode" and set it to "desktop.
Now on the left click debug
click UAString and click desktop.
That's it.
Make sure you haven't saved any bookmarks from the mobile sites or they will still open from the bookmark as mobile sites.

[Q] Lollipop WiFi issues - takes long time to turn on or not turning on at all

I had CM11 on my Nexus 4 and did a full wipe, then flashed the official Lollipop image (using flash-all.sh script). The process went smooth, without any problems.
Now, I am having WiFi issues. When I turn on WiFi from quick settings it changes the icon, but doesn't connect to the network yet. If I try to access WiFi settings it opens them up, but I can see only the actionbar and a blank white screen. No networks shown. Sometimes I even get "The app is not responding dialog". It sits like this for about 30-60 seconds and after that it connects to the network and I am able to access WiFi settings.
Sometimes I can't turn WiFi on at all. Quick settings don't change the WiFi icon to the ON state. If I try to turn it on from the Settings, the switch does literally nothing - not even "Turning WiFi on..." shows up.
I tried to reflash the system - still get these issues. Tried reflashing just the radio module - didn't fix it. No idea what to do. KitKat worked just fine.
Does anyone else have similar problems?

I have exactly the same issues as you, but on a Nexus 10. Running LRX21P 5.0 Lollipop.

Did a selective restore of ~75 apps from Google backup
Played with the machine for hours.
Rebooted, now got no wifi
Anyone suggest a workaround?
EDIT: I came across this post in the Nexus 5 Thread , where he suggests changing your router's channel to something below 12. I changed mine from 13 to 8 and now wifi seems to be working.
EDIT2: Sadly the above was a red herring. The problem seems more complex. Hopefully Google will release a fix soon

I don't think my problem depends on the available WiFi networks. But thanks for the response.

I have the exact same issues, Wifi doesn't turn on at all. It doesn't matter if I press the quick settings button or the button in the menu. It says Wifi on, but nothing happens. After the screen goes dark, Wifi turned itself off again.
Any suggestions? Thank you!

I'm having the exact same issue. Wiped with ADB and flashed LRX21T factory image from Google's website. No error codes during flash.
Wifi is great - if you leave it on all the time. As soon as it turns off, it will NOT turn on. I get no error message, no timeout like it usually does when Wifi isn't working properly, no crash report. Nothing. Just a stalled Wifi acting like it's turning on. If I exit Wifi settings page, and come back, it shows as being off. Turn it on, and it just hangs the same way.
So frustrating.
It's for sure not the network I'm on, as it also doesn't turn on when I'm not near Wifi, or when I'm at a friend's house. Rebooting the phones makes the Wifi work again...until it turns off for ANY reason. Then we're back at square 1.

My WiFi seems to turn itself off. Then there is no way I can get it to turn back on unless I reboot the phone.

I have the same issue.I sideloaded the OTA and everything went great,no errors during the installation.I was on stock 4.4.4.
When I turn on the Wifi it takes around 30 sec to connect to a network.If i click on the Wifi menu in the setting it usually freezes or I get a black screen.After that Wifi works fine,but another thing I noticed it doesn't remember new networks.I don't know if a factory reset would help...

Anyone find a solution yet? Did a factory reset eliminate the problem for somebody?

I got the same thing. Currently, I'm using Power Toggles to do the on/off setting.

I'm facing a different issue. Whether I have WiFi on or off, it always appears active in the battery usage stats ('scanning always available' is off)
WiFi was off when the screen was off from about 3 am to 2 pm.

I am having the same issue. very frustrating. it was working perfectly last night on my home network, but now it wont connect to my work network. it has the same issues as everyone else. the wifi toggle will turn on, but it will not show any networks. then after a couple of seconds it will turn itself off.

Have the same issue. After some standby time, turning Wifi on again, it showed me networks where I am not close to anymore and didn't show me the actual networks where I am right now. This seems to be a serious bug that needs fixing. I don't want to reboot my phone to fix it. Didn't Google delayed the Lollipop-Update because of some Wifi issues?

Found this thread when this problem popped up for me after flashing the factory images one by one. Might try to find a source-built ROM using a later version to see if it got fixed.

I have this problem too, in battery status wifi always show on even I turn on or off. It not happen with Kitkat.

Smart Remote issues

All of a sudden (on verizon note 4)-smart remote kept force closing. Wouldn't work.
Went to applications and cleared everything and uninsulated update.
Now when I go into app can't choose USA. I go to update it in app store and says 'not compatible'!
Anyone else?
I put watch on on note 4 and working. So not a big deal.

Update- waited 4 hours. Then worked again. So odd.

I'll use this threat - can someone explain to me how does this stupid app work.

Few days ago there was an update and now the app asks every time when I press and on/off button what I want to control. But with the volume key, once selected what i want to control I cannot control the other device.

Voice search not working

Anyone experiencing a problem with the voice search on their remote not working? Voice search works with the controller and I already tried reseting the firmware on the remote by pressing and holding: back, home and mic button together for 30 secs. Cleared data and cache on Bluetooth Share and unpaired and paired the remote still not working.

It happening to me also. Voice search works at the controller but it doesn't work on the remote

Same problem here since update 3.2 on two shields.

I contacted nvidia and awhile back and was able to fix it using troubleshooting steps they gave me, but it stopped working again when I turned off the unit. It sucks cuz you have to type using the remote and I know you can use your phone to do tge voice search but for a expensive set top box it should work.

Yep same crap happened to me. Works on the game controller, not the remote. It triggers but never hears me. I use the phone app when I need to search.
Ridiculous to think this is not fixable by Nvidia.

Hi guys, same issue for me since 3.2 and 3.3 firmware.
I think I have a dirty fix : when the remote is in usb charge, voice search is working, not in charge it doesn't work.
I told you the fix was dirty, who use a remote plugged in charge ? he he

Mine died like 6months back, well just the mic, didn't get around for rma until a month or so ago, very easy to do... Should have done it right away

I'm not sure if this will help any with the nvidia remote but using the fire remote on the shield I have to push the voice button, voice search pops up then I have to push & hold down the voice search for the mic to register

Nvidia chat support came through. Mine is working now. This what I did:
Make sure the Remote is charged for at least 2 hours
-> Plug the Remote wired and see if it works.
-> If it doesn’t work wired too, reset the remote holding the back button and the home button together for about 15 seconds.
-> Try the firmware reset using Back, Home and Mic button for about 15 seconds
-> Clear the cache, data and force stop the SHIELD Controller app and restart ATV
-> Make sure firmware is updated

I've had problems where SPMC takes control and voice search works only within SPMC. Without digging into the source of SPMC to find a solid fix, the only "quick fix" temporary solution I've found, is to disable the internet connection on the shield tv and reconnect ( tested when SPMC is the only thing I've installed on the device ) I then will have voice search working again.
I can only assume SPMC hijacks the calls or redirects ports to SPMC's implementation of the voice search. So mayne upon reconnecting the internet, Google's API detects and takes back over.
I'm not certain this is the problem / solution for all. But for my specific case, that troublesome workaround just... works.

I tried this method, the mic seems working for a little bit, but need very loud.... and can't recognize the words...

Smart Location Trusted Places not working anymore

This worked perfectly out of the box but recently has stopped working. Not sure if it has to do with the QD9 update or maybe some other crap that installed. I can set the location fine and it clearly shows me inside the boundary but every time I get to the locks screen it still doesn't unlock automatically.
Anyone else have the same issue?

I've had the same issue on my last phone and now the S8 as well. From what I've heard it's a Google issue and they are supposedly working on a fix.

The problem with Trusted Place is that it’s very spotty! It only works for a day or two then fails to unlock the device. I’ve set two different locations, one for home and another using the latitude and longitude location. Only way to get it working is to reboot the device. Regrettably, it only works for a day before reverting back to my lock screen method again.

this not related to the galaxy s8. even my nexuw 6p and pixel. had this problem. it works when u set it up the. it jist stoppwd working after a few days. a restart or setting it uo again does work but same issue will happen next oe a few days after. bluetooth trusted device works but location is a problem. related to nougat.

Yep can agree with everything said here seems to work sometimes then other times not...Also I can't believe that google won't allow your home wifi network to be used as a trusted device.
I t seems like a obvious choice to me to use your home wifi as a trusted device but hey what do I know.

Google Play Services 11 fixes this issue. I'm on 11.0.55 and it works consistently every time.

I have 11.0.55 on my new S8+ and it doesn't work for me.

Mine suddenly started working today for no particular reason.
I hadn't changed any settings but when I came home it just unlocked.
Strange or what!

mine still isnt working, its infuriating as I wear glasses at work do I have to take my glasses to unlock.
Anyone else got location unlock working properly?

need to do a "Wipe Cache":
* Turn off phone
* Press Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press the Power key
* When the logo appears, release all keys
* Press the Volume down key several time to highlight "wipe cache partition"
* Press the Power key to restart phone
Another way that does not require to go into recovery mode but seems to fix the problem for shorter time :
* Settings -> Apps -> Google Play Services -> Delete cache
* Reboot
I've also added bunch of points in all corners around my house in the Trusted Places settings
