issues making phone calls... - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

This is a bit odd, but usually when placing a call I get the "calling..." Screen but the call never connects, so I end the call, which seems to end it, but then it automatically restarts the call and then it goes through normally. Anyone else have this issue?
There also seems to be times when the caller can't hear me, I think I might be accidentally covering a noise cancelling microphone or something while talking. What is the hole between the camera and Pogo connectors for?

Who is your carrier?
That hole is a microphone.
Have you tried a factory reset to see if that solves the problem?

Just clear your cache in the phone app and reset your network settings and restart your phone. See if that fixes your issues. Also, hopefully you didn't puncture your mic when taking out your sim card. I would test different talking angles to check, also cover the mic with a finger to see if it gets worse if it doesnt you probably did puncture your mic.

Microphone issue N1

I have had my nexus for about a month now and a little while back started having problems with the microphone. People on the other end will say I sound like I am in a "tunnel" or "distant". Seems to get worse during long conversations. Sometimes I can hold a 20 minute conversation and not have one problem other times it gets so bad that they cant even hear me.
I have really good reception and 3g at my house. I called T-mobile to see if it could be something with their network and they said probably not since they had only noticed problems in Texas and some other random state (I live in BK,NY) . Called HTC and they were no help at all (said I should try and reboot my phone thats all they could think of). Called google and they said I sounded just fine. As I said before It doesn't happen during every single call, but I have had about 3 different people tell me the same thing...
Anyways, the bootloader is unlocked so I can't send it in to get it replaced or even have it looked at with out paying an arm and a leg.
Anyone Have any ideas? Anyone? Bueler? Bueler?
Thanks.
Ok this is just a random thought as I have had a similar experience, but only when I hold said phone with my shoulder. Are we perhaps doing something to the noise cancelling mic? Would covering it make a difference during a conversation? Something to do with the proximity sensor? i am just thinking out loud.
I dont think its the proximity sensor because I put tape on it keeping the screen off and it was still doing it. as for covering the mic on the other side I don't know. I guess i could cover it for a while and see what happens. I'm going to send it to HTC and see what they say. Hopefully its a hardware issue that they can fix for nothing.

2 Device problems i noticed on my phone.

First 1,gps needs around 10 mins in clear sky to lock my position , with gps fix(from the market) it takes 5-20 seconds.
Second and most important, all the people that i talk with cant hear my voice clear,i hear them clear tho, there is a really low pitch sound in the background when noone talking even on the road with full bars,i tryed 2g and 3g networks, i even tryed calling my phone from someone else phone and i couldnt hear his voice clear, when i used the headphones my callers heard my voice crystal clear.
I am thinking of taking my phone for replacement in the next 3 houers so i really apriceate any fast feedback especially for the second problem.
GPS fix is usually very quick on my X5 with data connection on, usually under 30 sec.
I've had one or two instances where a geocaching app wouldn't get a fix in 5 or 10 min. A reboot solved that every time.
As for the sound problem: sounds like your microphone is defect. No such problem on my phone...
1. You need to enable gps xtra for faster lock, in the same menu where you enable gps.
2. Some say that B160 rom creatly improves call quality, id try that from. Look from the dev section.
so gps is normal but microphone defective?
anyway,i got it back at the shop for a replacement i ll have a new in 4-5 days ,but im a bit woried if it will be defective again as there are some known problems like gps, wifi, light bleeding, burned pixels, flash player random reboots and i think i ve got 60-70% chance of geting a working one
I have a similar problem...
When people call me they tell me that my voice is very low. This changes when i hold the phone in front of my face, then it becomes better. But it is only good when I switch to the loudspeaker mode. Then you hear my voice clearly. Is it possible that this phone has a certain voice activation level and that this is set too critical?
And if it is so, can I set this threshold value anywhere?
edit: And can I edit the volume of the microphone itself too?
I find that if I have the phone tucked between my ear and shoulder (like you do when you are using both hands for something but still want to talk on the phone), noone can hear me at all.
But if using it "normally" (ie: by holding it to my ear with my hand) it works fine.
Does this device have a noise cancelling mic that is affecting things when the entire back panel is covered or something?
i have the same mic problem... i sent it for replacement...

True about GPS, just need to enable the option sanpsa said.
Mic, never had a problem so far.. touch wood.
Notwithstanding the fact that flipmodegr's microphone was obviously faulty, something to consider when others say they're having difficulty hearing you is the noise-cancellation microphone.
I suspect that those who're having problems might be covering or scraping the second microphone hole, or have a cover of some sort over it.
I haven't encountered the problem at all, but I'd be interested in knowing if those of you who have (outbound) audio problems are using any sort of cover on the 'phone while you're actually using it.

I'm pretty sure it's not a noise cancelling mic. It's just a directional mic for use when recording video.

I unfortunately don't have the option for xtra GPS - I only see Use GPS Satellites, and beneath that is GPS Source (which gives me only one option - Use internal GPS)
I am on Gingerbread - CyanogenMod 7.2.0.
Can you or someone else suggest a way to get around this problem? I am trying geocaching and the lack of GPS fix is really frustrating!
for me the GPS fast fix was only solved with replacing the gps.conf file, with this one

Microphone Issues on Asus Zenfone 2 Laser Ze550kl

Hello All
I bought myself an Asus Zenfone 2 Laser Ze550KL a couple of weeks back.
An overall good phone. But I am facing an irritating issue.
The phone's microphone does not work from some point onwards. Once this happens, when attending(or making) a call, the other person wont be able to hear me.
I am not sure whether its a hardware issue or a software issue. Because once I restart the phone everything is perfect once again. After maybe a couple of calls, the problem resurfaces.
I read in multiple forums of this issue (even in Zentalk) , but nobody has a clean solution. Some of the solutions were -to disable Ok Google Detection, to enable call recording, to switch to loudspeaker, to reboot the phone and so on.
Enabling loud speaker works for me. When I realize the other person cannot hear me, I switch to loud speaker and then he is able to hear me.
Did anybody come across this issue? Is it a software issue? Any help/ideas/suggestions would be nice.
I am hoping its a software bug which will be hopefully fixed in the next system update or so.
Thanks
Hmm that's an odd one I can tell you that I have call recording enabled on a ze551kl and haven't had this issue, but I'm not sure if its specific to the 550 or not. I haven't actually recorded any of my calls, it just pops up and asks me if I want to every time and I tap cancel.

Its not about recording calls.. Its about the recipient not hearing me. The microphone is what is bothering me. I doubt the issue is with the noise cancellation of microphones. Perhaps cancelling more than noise.
When I reboot the phone, everything starts working normally. After a few calls the problem returns, the recipient not hearing me!.
The temporary fix for me is switching to loud speaker. I dont know why, but the mic starts working when in loud speaker. The moment i switch it back to handson, the recipient is again not able to hear me.
Read a few forums in zentalk reporting the same issue

I am seriously hoping it is a software bug which would be fixed in the next update or so.
I tried the hardware test which behaves differently when the problem occurs and when it is problem free.
The hardware test is perfect if i test the mic just after reboot and when everything is normal.
But once i find out that the recipient is unable to hear me (after maybe a couple of calls/days after the reboot) , i did the hardware test again and certainly was different. A buzz at all times with my voice being completely muffled. Something to do with the noise cancellation mic i believe.
I have tried disabling OK Google Detection.
I have tried enabling call recording.
I have tried reseting factory settings , clear wipe partitions etc.
I have tried enabling dialer pad tones (Dont know why this was marked as a solution in some forums)
But all of the above was not a solution for me. Switching to loudspeaker works. And rebooting the phone (which is irritating during important calls) also works.
Any help would be nice.

To OP,
This is for most of the guys. It's a software issue, dont worry, Just update to latest update. Which happened to me the same, and solved when i updated some random OTA update fix by asus. So the current version on my phone now is LRX22G.WW_user_1.15.40.639_20151029044030520_201505210103

Hi I too have this same issue. I believe it is a faulty model from Asus! I had serviced my mobile last month and the Subboard assembly has been completely changed by those people but still I face the same issue. . Hope I will throw away this bulsh**t soon. Asus not willing for replacement too I argued so many times which is just waste of time. Totally a waste of money and time.
Microphone issue
I am also having same problem once restarted phone is all fine...should i replace phone ??
Bought just 2 days back
Solution
Since you apply this solution the error has not returned to flicks: I cannot post the youtube link, but search the title: Solved: Asus Zenphone 2e mic problem by Jack Scorpion.
I have the same device with the same problem! It was neglible before, and it happened very rarely. But recently it had become worse and that thing happened to all the calls. Switching to loudspeaker works (loudspeaker mode disables the bottom mic and switches to top mic). I reset the device to factory settings (that thing wiped the internal memory too!) and since then, i haven't updated the 'ASUS Calling Screen' from the play store and everything works fine atleast till now.
hai friend try (ASUS ZenFone 2 Laser=ZE550KL (Z00L) software Image: 1.17.40.1234 for WW SKU only) this firmware from asus site or try system update form your mobile. thats old version runing firmware running on your mobile so thats a software problem. this a network issue in that old version asus team doing always best i am also have same problem in past month but my current update installed after working fine. so don worry friends

Try disabling Audio Wizard app
I am also facing same problem. Suddenly the mic of my asus fails to work.
Solution
There is solution. Please post it on another forums after you will check it.
Just hold your phone in your hand in position, which will make sound to reflect directly into your voice microphone. This way you will make a difference in signal between voice and noise cancellation microphone. That's how voice cancellation technology works. I have got this result after one week of search for any effective solution. And did not find any useful info. So I have find a solution after some experiments.
Please post it to another forums if it will solve your problem.

other end can't hear me, I'm on tmobile

So I've had this issue with several calls. One going to t-mobile, another to Verizon and another to a land line. All three said that I have constant call loss. All they hear is static, and my voice goes in and out. I was in my truck for two of the calls and in a home Depot for another. I can hear the caller on the other end, but they can't hear me. Anyone else have this issue and maybe a fix? Thanks.
Turn off VoLTE and see if it persists
Go to your phone - 3 dot menu top right corner - Call settings - VoLTE slider to off
We're you moving? Maybe slow transfer of towers. And also what other poster said.
Ya I went in and disabled volte, so far it has helped. I'll do some more calls and see if it's a good fix. Thanks.
Update, I turned off volte and I still have the same issue where they can't hear me on the other end.
Bad antennas and or mic. Try sim in another phone before exchange.

This, you may have a bad unit. I know mine did that issue a couple of times but I was in a bad LTE area and had VoLTE on.
So I found out why my phone calls kept getting really muffled. Apparently the way I hold my phone my pinky would cover the mic... So now I feel dumb, but I didn't think that the mic would get muffled this easily. So if anyone has the same problem watch your finger placed.

calls broken up on the other persons end

Ever since I got my phone wet from the water hose splattering on it like rain the phone has been acting up every now and then. I don't know if it's related. but about 4 out of 10 phone calls people say I"m broke up and they can't hear me or they hear every other word. I can hear them fine. I have to reboot the phone to fix it. I also notice when using the HD recorder that the right channel doesn't have much audio to it when recording in stereo sound. the right microphone is the same one for phone calls. Does anyone else have any of these problems? Is there a solution? I haven't had the chance to call verizon about it yet. They'll just want me to reset my phone before sending a replacement and all that marigamaroo.
update: Since i rebooted the phone last time it's been good so far ad i noticed today when using the sound recorder on stereo sound, it records in both channels now. so whatever goes wrong with my phone it causes the bottom mic to crap out. Affecting phone calls and stereo recording with the bottom mic as as the "right channel" for the recording. I don't know if it's a hardware issue or a software issue. I don't know if resetting the phone would help or what. anyone have this issue or insight about it?
Yes, same issue on AT&T version. Haven't gotten the phone wet though. I have tried a hard reset and it didn't work.
I had that same problem till I turned of VoLTE (voice over LTE) Once that happened every call is crystal clear. Try it.

I figured it wouldn't work. i just reset my phone and reinstalling everything. have to see how it works now. and the bad connection with the headphone jack that the Verizon rep says should be fixed after a factory reset. they won't send a replacement till i reset the phone and try it again. he tried to get me to take it to the corporate store to verify the bad headphone jack and check the phone for damages, but the nearest corporate store is 50miles away. I'm not having that.
I have had headphone jack problems with the G3 and G4 - that all developed the more I used the jack. I haven't really used the jack much on G6, but its frustrating to hear that it may develop issues as well.
I called AT&T about the issue. They did some network reset on their end. If that doesn't work, they said to turn off "Enhanced LTE Services". I'm guessing that's the same setting as the VoLTE that Metalshadow mentioned above.
