Email app and Exchange issue on US997? - LG G6 Questions and Answers

I just got an unlocked version, US997. Please note that this was a used phone, but it is in mint shape. Anyways, a couple of things...
1. There is no built-in mail app
2. There is no exchange service running.
3. I am trying to setup a new Microsoft Exchange Account, but the Add Account list does not give an option for Microsoft Exchange. Only gmail exchange, gmail pop, gmail IMAP, LG Account and Evernote account.
Am I missing something? Thanks in advance.

Try making a hard reset, if it is softdebloated it will reenable all the missing apps. If it is rootdebloated try reupdating with lg bridge.

Thank you for the info about the LG Bridge. Anyways, I already hard reset the phone but the exchange was not available. I did install LG Bridge, but can you help me to point out what and how it needs to be updated? Thank you.

If there was some apps debloated reinstalling the most recent firmware will recover all the stock apps.

Gmail App not syncing inbox - only "All Mail"

Hi,
I've recently done a factory reset to switch the google account I was using.
Now whenever I receive email, my Inbox is not update via the app only via All Mail which I have to check manaually.
Via the web on both the PC and Hero, the email is sitting in the inbox correctly. Changing the sync label settings (i.e. increasing from 7 to 8 days etc) will update the inbox correctly, but not for any new incoming mail.
Has anyone encountered this issue and managed to fix it? I've seen it mentioned a few times on various discussion boards from a google search, but no fixes?
Bump. Another issue seems to be messages getting stuck in the Outbox until I clear the gmail cache or change the label sync options. I've emailed HTC to see if they can raise this issue with google, there doesn't seem to be anyway to email someone at google?

When you wiped, did you go through the initial setup wizard to log in to your new Google account, or did you skip it to do it later?

No I did it straight away
I've managed to get my google account setup with HTC Mail on google's exchange server finally. However it is not pushing mail via this also, and I'm wondering if it's a problem with my account or something?
If you have a Google Apps for Domains account, you need to turn on "Google Sync" for the domain, but this isn't applicable to standard Gmail accounts.
I can only suggest that you try another wipe to see if this fixes the problem - take a nandroid backup first though, just in case it doesn't work.
Regards,
Dave

I've enabled Google sync, but I didn't think about doing a nandroid backup and wiping it. I'll try that I think.

Tried a factory reset earlier and it didn't work, sync'd mail once and then stopped receiving new emails. Restored the nandroid backup now.
Just done a reset and tried it with an @googlemail address (instead of my hosted domain) and it works.
Must be something to do with the hosted domain?

Contacts: No "merge with Google" available in China ROM - How to sync?

Hello,
It took me a while to understand that the Contact app in the Chinese Stock ROM is somehow customized.
Since Google Play Store and Gmail apps are not installed here then I managed to get them and pushed them to system/app. Fine, can access GMail and the app store using my gmail account.
However, although I've set in <Acoount> my Google account to sync People details, there is no freakin way to sync them in the Contacts app. No "Merge with Google" item to select, only Samsung. So frustrating!!
Does anybody know how to sync the contacts? I'm not talking about importing.
Otherwise do you think I should try to get from a fellow SGS4 owner the official (and not restricted) Contacts apk (btw is this SecContacts.apk?)
thanks a lot for your help
L.

I have the same issue. Just bought a samsung in China and I'm unable to sync google contacts.
I've downloaded the GoogleContactsSuncAdapter.apk and will install onto my phone tonight. Hopefully this will work. Will let you know how it goes.
Well, how did that go lavive? Cause I'm having the same problem

I didn't a way until now
Maybe we'd better look for a contact apk from a Samsung's international Stock ROM, and replace the one from the Chinese Stock ROM.

Microsoft Exchange wont set up...

When I try to add my MSN email account using Microsoft Exchange, it always errors out, or says it cant connect to the server. My Note 10.1 has the same account, I deleted it and added it back no problems. Anyone have any idea's?
MSN as in [email protected] or .net? I would be surprised if using "Add MS Exchange Account" works for this as it's not an Exchange account. I would think the proper way to add a web-based email account would be System Settings - > Accounts & Sync ->Add Account ->Email and choose Other. When entering your email address and password it should auto-configure the proper server settings.

Yes, .msn. I know it works, it worked previously on the phone, and still does on my note 10.1. I like it over setting up a regular pop3 account because it pushes the email, and deletes it right from the server.
Holy cow, I apologize, I've never heard that MS enabled EAS for hotmail/live/msn now Outlook.com. lol
Have you looked at the server settings for the account on the Note? Verify, but I believe the proper settings are:
Server Address should be m.hotmail.com
Username is full email address
Domain is NULL
SSL yes

No problem! I appreciate the help. I basically copied everything from my note to the g2, everthing looks the same as the microsoft link you provided. I have no idea what the problem is.
You say you previously had this account set up on the same LG G2? I've been wondering if sometimes the Email Data on these phones gets corrupt. Try clearing the Data and Cache for the Email App. I recently had a client who could not connect to their Exchange server on a GS4, even though I could using his info on my LGG2, he decided to wipe the phone and it worked fine after that.
Before you wipe the phone, download/install Touchdown, it gives you a 30 day trial. See if that connects. If so...hopefully clearing the data/cache for the Email app works, if not would a wipe kill you? lol
For grins, you could also try using Microsoft' "Remote Connectivity Analyzer," entering in your account info and see what it returns. \

Well, here is how I fixed it. I installed the emailgoogle.apk and exchange2google.apk from kitkat that started floating around when the n5 first came out. No problems. Odd.
Thanks for the help and idea's guys, Im now thinking it may have something to do with the LG Backup and restore of it. I did delete the cache and app data, but that didnt work, so Im doing a full restore of the .kdz file and see if that helps.

TIP: Adding Exchange/Hotmail support to GMail

If anyone is interested, the Exchange service on the G4 (at least the T-Mobile version) can be disabled via the apps menu and Google Exchange services can be installed.
This will allow you to use the GMail app with Exchange enabled hosts, like Hotmail/Outlook.com and retain push mail, contact and calendar sync.
Recommended steps:
If you have any accounts using email and exchange, remove them first.
Open Settings/General/Apps/All
Tap on Exchange (The LG one with the blue icon)
Force stop
Disable the Exchange Service
(Restarting your phone is recommended at this point)
Install Google Exchange Services
(Restarting your phone is recommended at this point as well)
Open GMail and you will have Exchange as an option when you add an account.
This is gold to me.
Thanks.
sweet thx!
edit: oops that didn't work for me it gets stuck constantly sync'ing and has some exchange service crashes hmm...
Works fine here so far. I just wish you could disable the remote administration requiring your device to use a PIN. I'd love to use Smart Lock.

It's important that you remove any old exchange accounts in email first, then force close the LG exchange service and disable it. If you don't disable it, then GMail will get stuck syncing.

Just waiting on root so I can keep my damn unlock screen without having to put in an 8 character password with numbers and special characters every time I want to unlock my phone.
I might just bite the bullet and buy touchdown for $20 because I heard it doesn't need to apply the permissions to your whole phone but just the app.

This. I have used Smart Lock on my N5 with no problems even though we are required to have a PIN. Fired up the G4 and immediately noticed once I setup email Smart Lock was grey and can't be used. I thought that by switching to Gmail for my Exchange email I could get around that only to find Gmail doesn't have Exchange support on this phone (until I found this thread).
Has anyone that has followed the instructions at the top been able to get Smart Lock working when Gmail is used for Exchange email? Or does Touchdown get around this?
I am going to test this out tonight - can't goof around too much while on the job!!

Outlook bypasses the security requirement, but it appears to only sync email, not calendars or contacts. You get prompted that Exchange wants you to accept these changes, but you have an option to deny them.

I'll have to look at that new outlook app closer then. It prompted me for the security permissions to wipe phone, pin, and all that crap so I exited out.
Touchdown is supposed to be all one contained environment so I don't think it syncs with the default apps. I could be wrong as I have never tried it since I always got a PIN bypasser working on my old phones. It is free for a month so try it out! I don't care about contacts and it would be nice to have calendar but I'm not heartbroken over it. What I would like to know is if you still get a notification of new mail. I would assume so but aren't allowed to preview it which is fine but I at least need to know I have mail.

Yeah that request seems to be standard whenever you setup Outlook, regardless of app. It was when it came to the lock screen settings, it allowed me to dismiss it.
I just tried the Outlook app and it required far less permissions then adding an exchange email through the android/lg settings. The regular settings wanted pretty much everything. Wipe, disable camera, password type, password length, password expiration, encrypt phone, disable sd card, etc etc. It had everything and probably because my company just checked everything. Now the question is if it would really do any of those things probably not because that it a further settings in Exchange but it just wants to be able to do all that.
The Outlook just wanted password rules, unlock attempts, lock screen, and encrypt phone. It asked to encrypt and I said no and phone still works. I was able to keep pattern lock screen but it disabled everything else besides pin and password. The Outlook app does not integrate well with Android so everything is contained in it's own app. I don't think it does notifications either since I sent an email and waited a good 10 minutes. My phone never went off but I open the app the email shows up but never as a notification.
So maybe the Outlook app will get you by for the time being.
Hrm - I'm on an LG G4 (EU H815 model, unlocked). No Google Exchange Services visible or available in the Play Store ...
I also have an old Galaxy S3 running 5.1.1 (PacMan rom) - that has Gmail with Exchange working just fine. It has the same version of Gmail as on the G4, but also has "Exchange Services" running. I can't find any other information on that though.
[EDIT] I just checked the link in the OP which looks like the latest apk, but the button for Play Store doesn't work - URL doesn't exist.
Quick question - I haven't disabled LG Exchange on the G4 yet - when I do it says that the app will be hidden from then on. What if one wants to re-enable it - will it still be visible on the Apps menu ?
TIA

Have you been able to figure this out? I have coworkers on a N6, N5, and a HTC One (M7), who all have our Corporate E-mail linked to their phone via either gmail or the htc e-mail app. They can all access their respective Smart Lock settings. On my phone, its grayed out.
Confused on what this does? Just lets you add a second exchange account to gmail? Are emails mixed together or do they remain separated? I like having my Email and Gmail in 2 different apps. I also like the LG email app.

Regretting 8.1 upgrade, seeking solutions

Since installing 8.1 Wednesday morning:
1. My Google Camera app wouldn't open; I had to replace it.
2. Gmail stopped automatically downloading my email from yahoo.
3. Samsung Gear S2 no longer vibrates when PH-1 receives SMS (it vibrates with Facebook messenger messages, though.) I uninstalled all the associated apps and reset the watch - problem is still there.
If anyone has solutions for 2 or 3, lemme know. Both the Samsung Gear and Samsung Accessory Service app pages on Play Store are flooded with reports that vibrations have stopped working. The indicator shows on the watch face, but the watch doesn't vibrate. Reddit has reports of the same, as well.
At this point, I'd lose days rebuilding the phone if I backed up to Nougat. If you have advice or recommendations, please share 'em.

The fastest way to downgrade would be using Titanium backup to make backups of everything you need andor want then fastboot flash back with essential's firmware on their website.

Yes, there are settings that allow the S2 to vibrate for selected apps only. Messages and FB Messenger are both switched on; only FB Messenger vibrates the S2.

From everything I've read, I need to first root the phone, in order to get Titanium to operate. And, as I understand it, rooting (more accurately, unlocking the bootloader so that I can root) will wipe out all of my phone's settings. If I'm going to have to rebuild this thing from scratch, Essential is getting a call.
Essential customer service wasn't helpful.
I flashed back to 7.1.1 then re-installed 8.1 via OTA. Everything works again. Next step is to root to get Titanium on. I tried this morning, but failed, for some reason.

Make sure you grant titanium backup all it's permissions...
And if you can't get it to restore... Try switching to SELinux permissive

Got the phone rooted, but GMail was just NOT playing nicely with Yahoo; it would not auto-sync and notify of new emails. It would only download new email if/when GMail was launched. Long story short, I manually added the server settings for POP3 and that finally fixed it.
Incoming: pop.mail.yahoo.com, port 995, SSL/TLS
Outgoing: smtp.mail.yahoo.com, port 465, SSL/TLS
Other things I did that may have helped:
1. I uninstalled my Yahoo account from GMail.
2. GMail still showed remnants of my Yahoo account, so I uninstalled the latest GMail update. THAT action removed my Yahoo account.
3. I also verified my Yahoo account was removed from "Users & accounts" under Settings
4. From my PC, I changed my Yahoo password.
5. From my PC, I turned off Yahoo's "two-step verification" security under Yahoo's account settings. [During GMail account setup, the "two-step verification" security approach doesn't appear to use the server's typical password authentication credentials. Instead, it uses text messaging and proprietary codes entered into Chrome, which kept generating a 404 error on my PH-1.]
