Hi. My screen has a touch imput free area on the top part of it. It is about a half inch, just bellow the notiffication bar. My phone is rooted, and i have hotspot enabled. Other than that is stock.
Plrase advise me as to what i can do. If there is nothig i can do, is my warranty voided because root? Who should i contact for warranty? Att or motorola?

Which method did you root your phone with?...
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
I dont remember. I was rooted, and than updated my phone to the latest moto release. Lost root and than i had to flash somethig to get root back and than to unlock the hotspot app.
This was about 2 or 3 months back. All was ok till about a month ago, when i dropped the phone to the floor. Noticed the screen issue shortly after. Not sure if the drop caused this tho. There are no scratches on the screen, and it had a silicone case on it.

do you think the problem came from dropping your phone or were you messing with something on your phone? and yes your warrentty is voided, but you could get your own new screen on ebay for like 30 buxs and fix it yourself
Not sure if the drop caused it. Maybe. I noticed the pb soon after. I didn't mees with the phone, other than rooting and enaibeling hotspot.
The screen on ebay, is it the same as the stock one? Same quality?

Try a advanced restore of pds.img from the cwm only to see if that fixes your problem.. Thats if you did backup from cwm..
No, i didn't back up anything. Just rooted. I barely mannaged to do that.

My phone had the same thing and I sbf'd back to 1.26 and took it back no problems. Mine was also unlocked.

I also have that problem, the problem is with the touchscreen not the software. At first, the touchscreen will not work for sometime you'll need to turn the screen off and on again. The problem will start more frequent. Then, the touchscreen on some part of the screen will not work at all. Only to fix is to call ATT for a repair. But, I live in Thailand and I brought mine at US. So, it not worth sending it back. I buy the touchscreen off ebay for $60 and change it myself. Working great now.
Pretty cheap on ebay, some for $40. My screen started acting the exact same way. I honestly believe it's heat damage. I remember reading that there are layers of the glass that are glued together. Extreme heat could cause the layers to come apart enough that sections of the screen are unusable.
My screen is exactly as the OP said, about a half-inch from the bar at the top. I noticed it soon after I started mounting the phone in my car near the top of the windshield where it could get some steady sunlight (obviously I didn't realize it was doing that until I noticed this problem).
I just ordered my replacement off ebay and will give it a shot. It's worth $40 if it'll let me use my phone properly again and hold off having to get a new phone prior to my upgrade price kicking in.
Hopefully installation won't be too hard. Good luck to the rest of ya!
This happen to my boyfriend's phone recently as well. I posted everywhere trying to find a solution but no one could help. It started to get worse after about a week or so where another section, towards the bottom of the screen, became unresponsive as well. My boyfriend finally called Motorola and sent it in for repair. We don't have ATT's insurance so we didn't try that way. Anyways, he's suppose to receive the phone this Monday...we'll see if it's fixed.

Did your touchscreen come with the adhesive? If not, you'll need to be extremely careful when you remove the old one cause you'll need the adhesive or you'll need the two sided tape with <0.25mm thick and apply it to around the touchscreen and remember to apply it as a close system or the dust will go under your screen.
If you need more info just PM me
I think i.ll call moto.

Mine had the same issue, ive unlocked, rooted, modded the rom and radio, so no going to ATT, instead i took it to UbreakItIFixIt, just google them, best $99 i spent and kept all my custom goodies!
Sorry I haven't responded, hopefully you got your phone fixed but just in case you haven't...The phone came back and he hasn't had a problem with it whatsoever. The rep on the phone didn't know what was wrong with it or what they did to fix it but whatever they did, it worked. It took about a week or so to get the phone back and the only thing he had to pay for was shipping the phone out.
The dis-assembly went rather smoothly. When I was kind of finangling to get the new digitizer on, I noticed that the actual strip had become lose. I believe this may have been caused by the heat of my hand - or perhaps it was fault to begin with.
Now looking at the circuitry and the ribbon itself, it doesn't seem like anything is broken. Would there be any way for me to adhere the ribbon back on properly in order to make my digitizer work again? I don't really have the money to shell out for a brand new one and this is a bit of a pain in the butt.
Thanks in advance.

I think it may be a fault in the replacement you ordered and should request a new one. The "heat" from your hand couldnt have done that, and if it did, that would have happened anyway because the internals of the phone would get much hotter

I'm fairly sure it was quite loose right when I took it out of the package. It pretty much slipped off kind of like a soapy sticker. This can't be right, can it?

Perfect. The part definitely seemed strange from the get-go. The company offered me 10% off, which I don't really feel is fair if the part is actually defective.
I've linked them to this thread, so if some more people could chime in that would be absolutely great.
So the part is defective and they wont replace it free?
Nice business model. Sounds shady.

Yeah it defiantly must be dodgy as I have broken my screen and fitted a new digiziter and it has functioned flawlessly. No damage whatsoever during installation, you should defiantly get a refund

Threaten to get BBB involved. That's the only way I got repair universe to send me a replacement after many emails about the matter. The digitizer they sent me had the ribbon cut nearly in half. Gave me the run around about how their stuff is fully tested before leaving the site and if I could take a picture. I told them all I wanted was my digitizer and if they couldn't honor their return policy I would call BBB and report. I was given the RMA the next email.

I agree, but like you said. When you are dealing with an internet company with no supposed phone support, sometimes that's what needs to be done. Although I did eventually find a phone number for them, I didn't need to use it before they finally made it right.

Ouch, that looks horrible. I would have definitely RMA'd that as well myself. Mine is also "nearly perfect" and has two very small areas of backlight bleed but nowhere near as dramatic as yours and I don't think that I'll be RMA-ing mine for that alone.

Pretty much normal for LCD displays, you can always get screen bleed to appear when viewing in the dark and at high/full brightness, it is a limitation of the technology. When you have it on auto or sensible brightness and use the phone normally can you notice it? If the answer is no, don't worry about it.
Regards
Phil

I wouldnt be surprised if the RMA was returned because of screen bleed and then they sent it to you and hoped you wouldnt notice. Every RMA is probably an old return since they dont even have new ones to sell.
Did you get the RMA right away or did you have to wait awhile? If it was right away then it must be a faulty return.
It took 5 days. Now that you say this.. Phone had some dirt and had finguerprints tho "i was the first one to open it"

I bought three Nexii on November 27th and all three had screen bleed. I can't see OP's pictures to compare but each phone has a ~1/4" area of bleed with one phone having two. This has only been visible when playing a movie and a black screen is shown at the beginning. I don't notice it at boot up, for instance.
I don't know if this bothers me enough to RMA yet. My thinking is to punt the issue into next year, wait for supply to catch up with demand, and then RMA for a new unit. Two of my Nexii are going to relatives so unless they notice it, I don't think I'll bother RMAing them.
I remember seeing someone mention in a thread that LG can't seal an LCD to save their skins and that person is knowledgeable, in retrospect. The issue looks exactly like some adhesive wasn't applied or pressed down evenly during assembly. I wouldn't be surprised if assembly by hand is the cause of the problem, due to expediency in order to fulfill existing orders.

You cannot seriously believe they do this? They have separate batches for new sales and RMA.
I agree with everything u said. Mine has 3 bleeds 2 on top and one on the top left. Im not going to RMA my N4 though its a non win either way so many people get stuck in a RMA cycle. If your phones are good other than light bleeds ID stick with them. But that's your call good luck with everything.

You have one year for manufacturer defects. Please hold off at least a few more weeks on RMA so people whose devices develop issues that seriously affect functionality can get a replacement quickly.

My guess is that it's common practice. I know I've RMA'd devices to other manufacturers and gotten back "refurbished" devices. I'd be surprised if the refurbish process is any more complicated than booting it and looking for cracks in the glass.
A certain percentage of all electronics will be returned. A subset of those are perfectly functional devices. This is a function of having variable intelligence in the population. Now, rather than spend resources to determine which exactly of those returns are actually pristine devices that the mouthbreathers couldn't decipher, if the percentage in a sample is high enough, the company might well choose to mail out any that aren't obviously damaged and take the chance that the device will satisfy the customer. If it doesn't, they can always mail another.
Hiring a worker to mail things is a lot cheaper than hiring and training a worker to diagnose complex devices. It's also much slower, which means more labor costs. Even if they have to mail a device twice, it still comes out cheaper and faster than diagnosing every single return.
I received my Nexus 10 in the mail today (I thought I would never get off of work!) and when I opened the shipping package I noticed the actual Nexus box with the stickers on it saying "If this seal is broken, do not accept", the seals were in fact, broken. A bit disappointed, I figured since they were already tore I might as well look inside. Everything inside looks completely perfect and doesn't seem to be tampered with at all. As you see in my signature, it hasn't stopped me from using it (and loving it!) but I was just curious to know if anyone else had this happen. The tears aren't clean, and actually look like they could have occurred during shipping (that's what I'm telling myself anyways), but I've kept all the static wrapping on the device for the time being in case an issue comes up I can report the broken seal on arrival...hopefully their support doesn't read this thread. Haha.

So I can't find a definitive answer as to wether ghost touches are one of those quirks that I have to deal with on an essential (due to it's crappy panel) or if it's a defect that can (possibly) be addressed with a RMA. Anyone on here have first hand experience on this? Happens to me at least once ever 1 to 2 days.

I am dealing with the same issues on my original unit.
It is a manufacturing fault so just do an RMA, contact Essential and they will send you a replacement after you provide some information to them.
Personally I recorded this happening on my PH-1 display with another phone then uploaded the video to my Gdrive and sent them the link when I created my RMA case. After which they contacted me and asked a few questions. Like whether I have a screen protector on or not, it was happening for me in both cases.
To be honest it's been nothing but pleasure for me to deal with their customer service team, they're great and they seem to he aware of the ghost touch issues.

Would I be able to RMA the phone if I bought it from someone else.
Obviously when I bought the phone it seemed perfect, in fact the ghost touches didn't happen for well over a week but not they seem to be happening more often that not.
Never done an RMA so in aware of the whole process, also in UK.
That's a tough one Primey86, I knew this phone had it's faults before I purchased so I made sure to purchase it through Amazon and sold by Amazon for this very scenario. I'm assuming essential is going to ask me for date & proof of purchase before helping me. Good luck to you.

I bought mine from an eBay seller. It was in a brand new unopened box and the seller bought it from Amazon US, so they provided me with an original purchase receipt.
Yes Essential will request it, so I suggest you contact the person you bought it from to see if they don't mind supplying you with their original purchase receipt. Once you get past that stage you should be all good.
I think even if you can't get the original receipt from the seller it's worth a try to ask Essential if they will replace it since it's confirmed to be a hardware issue.

Just an update on the situation.
Doesn't look like essential want anything to do with me despite numerous emails back and forth.
It's a pity that they are well aware of the hardware fault on a batch of essential phones but are not willing to help fix it, shame on them!!
Disappointed would be an understatement as I love the phone, just wish I didn't have these damn ghost touches.
Peace.
I have this issue occasionally. If I just turn the screen off then back on it stops it. I've had my PH-1 for a year now and it happens so infrequently I never bothered to do anything about since I can make it stop just by turning the screen off then on.
Do we know what the manufacturing fault is that causes the ghost touches as I may look to fix this fault myself.
Is it just a dodgy screen panel or something completely different?

I heard someone say somewhere that it's a dodgy ribbon cable that connects the LCD to the motherboard. Although I'm not 100% on that.
It still happens on my grey PH1 but only like 1-2 times a day if I'm using it. As soon as I found out about the issue I contacted Essential and they sent me a replacement after going through RMA.

They sent me a white Essential phone as a replacement, but I didn't have to send the faulty Halo grey one back because they messed up on the first replacement they sent me which had a stuck pixel on arrival.
You cant replace the screen afaik because there are no spare parts for this phone, the only 2 things you can do is either open a case with Essential and ask that they RMA it. Or just live with the ghost touch issue, if it's not happening that frequently.

I've found some replacement screens on eBay but they're quite expensive that's if the screen isn't the problem towards the ghost touches.
I seem to get more ghost touches when the battery is low, not so much when it's fully charged.

Well they kinda had to be, I provided the original purchase receipt showing the device was bought directly from Amazon US in the summer (by someone else). Also I said the ghost touch issue seems to be well known and documented across the Internet, plus I supplied a short video of showing touches happen while I wasn't interacting with the screen itself. So I kinda put them in a position where they couldn't say no.
Personally I wouldn't advise to replace the screen yourself, you're likely to do more harm than good, but it's up to you. There's a reason the Essential phone was given a score of 1 on the iFixIt website lol
