Over heating notification - Google Pixel Guides, News, & Discussion

Just a FYI to all. My Pixel (running 8.0) shut off on me while charging just now. I was playing a video, battery at about 15%. Upon restart I had this notification about it getting to hot and shutting down to protect itself. I did have an Incipio case on also.

Sounds like a good thing happened.
It has been very hot in the Northern Hemisphere, after all. Video and low battery do go along with phone temperature

Samsung Vibrant overheating issues?

Anyone else having an issue who might live in Texas? I notice severe delay in the OS. Also had a small 1 foot drop out of my hand while I was sitting down and it went CooCoo, had to reset, and reinsert SD card. Ambient Temp today was 97 55% humidity. I noticed my phone was actually hot in the heat, which worried me.
Humidity ? What was it temp wise? I have mine up yo 115 while charging ... it's a different processor it heats a little.. I returned one due to it but the new one is just as hot. Don't feel hott just says it is. No biggie. To me...

Been over a hundred here and 60-80% humidity, phone feels fine.
My phone has gotten got to the touch when pushed really hard and charging. I think its the battery... But this has been reported on other forums as happening often. If Tmobile says its the battery they swap it out for free. And if you aren't rooted they will swap the phone.

Its cool...
My phone gets really hot when charging
but also gets hot when doing a lot on it. Hot enough that you can cook an egg on it and I was uncomfortable putting it to my ear for a phone call.
My heat feels like its coming for the processor and not the battery.
I live in Florida and its always hot as hell an humid the phone hasn't had any weird issues. It does get hot while charging an during use at times.

I live in Texas and the temperature outside has been mostly in the 90's and low 100's during the day and in the 80's at night. I haven't noticed my phone getting unusually hot though. I does get a little warm while charging or during heavy use but no more so than my G1 did. In fact, it usually seems relatively cooler than my old G1 felt.

In tampa... handset does get warm to the touch, when pushing it through paces (GPS, 3g, heavy data use...), but not alarmingly so.
My phone hit 134.6 degrees this morning and its a brand new vibrant out the box just installed battery indicator to monitor.
I've had mine get really hot as well, up around where i'm guessing the processor is, not the battery. When this happens, my battery really drains. I've looked to see what tasks are running and could see nothing. Powering off and on didn't fix it. Taking out the battery did. It's happened just a couple times in the last couple of months.

[Q] vibrant overheat icon

Yesterday morning I woke up to my vibrant battery, charged maybe 25% with an exclamation mark that looked like a road sign and a thermometer icon over the battery. The phone was very hot. I let the battery drained then charged it the night before. Is that normal was the battery over heating? should I exchange it for a new one? I got the phone on saturday and that was the first time i charged it.
Btw is anyones vibrant making creaking noises on the edges where it's painted metallic?
I personally have never heard of an overheating indicator on this device so this night be news to many. The issue of heat being generated from this device while charging has been brought up. For me it happens rarely now but when it does I pull the charger, let it cool down and then plug it back in.
Try charging it again and letting it drain again completely and see if you can get it to occur again. If so a battery replacement may be the only thing you need.
Sidenote: No my Vibrant doesn't make and creaking noises. I am just plagued with a loose volume rocker lol
Sent from my awesome Vibrant using XDA App
I've had the thermometer road sign come up before. I left my phone on the charger in the car. Realized I did it and went to get it and it was HOT! I put it by an AC vent and let it cool before using and haven't had any issue.
Are you using the charger that came with the phone?
Over heating when I first got the phone it would run super hot and even hotter when charging but never got that overheating symbol. However over a few days my phone barley gets hot anymore.
Creaking yes I am experiencing it as well as a loose volume button. It is annoying but it does not bother me that much.
Isn't that the under 30 % symbol . .
Last week my phone became super hot. I feel asleep while I was listening to music and while it was on the charger. When I woke up the phone was muy caliente, literally. It wouldn't turn on so I took out the battery to let it cool down but my battery was hot as well. I let it cool for a bit and put the battery in again and it still didn't work. So I plug it back into the charger and the battery charging icon booted up. I went into the OS and it said the battery was at 0%. Now it's working fine and never happened again. Weird though.
I called tmo and they said to go ahead and go get a new one from a retail location, since its still within the 14 buyers remorse period, so I did. But looking by the comments I think I didn't need to, but now I have no more creaking on the edges . Thanks guys for all your help and comments.
Ya. mine gave that symbol while charging the other day. I unplugged it and put it far away in case it was some defective battery or something. Nothing exploded and haven't see it since. Was mildly disturbing though.
wow, my phone doesn't over heat thankfully.
Glad you returned the phone.
Let us know if the new one does the same thing.
thank You.

Haha the thought of it might exploding was in the back of my mind also.
I had that problem too once. My phone got too hot one morning and got that symbol. I had an app that told me what the temp of the battery and it was at 144 f. I went too look at what was causing it, it said display at 90%. I had too remove the battery, let it cool down and than charge it. Every time I make sure that brightness is at 0% and that no other app is running in the background. Because when I wake up that morning, my phone was on before I even touched it. I wad thinking an app was not letting it sleep and it was on the whole night.
Yes, I did have screen turn off at 1 minute.
144F = 60C.... You could BURN yourself touching that lmao! That's high even for my computer processor...at least its on the high side I mean.
No wonder an icon popped up. Most I've gotten it to is 54C and that was with GPS navigation, music, screen on, and the phone being in direct sunlight sitting in the car while navigating me. And touching THAT it started being really uncomfortable/burning-like. Can't imagine what 60 would be like lol.
Glad it actually WORKS at such a temperature though. And that it TELLS you "Cool me down please" lol.

My Overclocked core i7 at 4 ghz does not even hit 60C (idle) on 100% load yes it does.
60C for a phone is unbelievably hot.
Your core i7 is one HECK of a chip then. My friend's corei7 that I helped overclock with a gigantic copper air cooler for $80 hits 70C at 4.00Ghz under load. I told him if it ever hits 73C to clock it down since that's the limit.

Anyone else have overheating?

Seems like when,i use my phone between 20 30 min intervals it gets real hot in the back. I have a case and the whole case gets hot.
Today while listening to pandora for 45 mins while cutting my hair it just turned off. Phone was hot....
Anyone else with this issue??
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I don't have a case but I ran pandora for 2 and half hours today and the back was still cool to the touch.
I haven't had any issues with this. Used the sirius/xm app for about 2 hours and it wasn't even warm.
mine actually gets really hot as well. i used google navigation for about 30 minutes today and the back got really hot, mostly at the bottom half of the phone. i have a incipio feather case and the case got warm as well. i haven't had the overheating affect any performance issues though but am a little worried that it's getting so hot. are you going to bring yours in to have it looked at?

Same here, used navigation for about 20 minutes and the phone was very warm.
im not sure what to make of this. the first day i had the phone, i had a missed call, and the phone got pretty warm in my pocket.?!?!?! later, talking on the phone and it got to be almost HOT.
yesterday i had a couple of 20 minute browsing sessions and the phone just got good and warm. but it dosnt seem to effect permormance at all, and the battery isnt draining too fast or anything, so im not worried about mine at this point.
nope mine is always cool as a cucumber
Mine gets warm/gentle hot when browsing or doing any stuff that needs data transfer over 3G/H.
Have a movie going on (from SD) for ~2 hours now, and it is still cool.
Having come from the N1 where this was a constant issue I can tell you it is due to placement of parts. The CPU sits immediately behind the lower part of the phone. Heavy CPU use will result in a hot phone.
Also keeping it in your pocket will heat it up too. Body heat and background processes that use the CPU.
It is only and issue if you are very hot for a long time. Can result in reboots and crashing.
The back of mine did get rather warm in the car after using Nav for ~30 minutes, however this doesn't seem any different than what my old Tilt did and is normal for smart phones.
If your phone does actually get hot enough to power itself off, then I'm guessing either you've got it in a very poor case (or warm pocket with no ventilation), or it's defective.
Pandora alone shouldn't be enough to make the phone hot. I'd suggest try running it with the phone sitting on a table and no case. If it still gets hot after 20 minutes, exchange it. If it doesn't, get a new case.
I also have the feather incipio case. It got so hot it crashed.... Nice case but worried if it keeps getting hot it may, cause, life of phone to, be a lot shorter!!!
If it happens again I'm going to take it to ATT.

My Atrix that I exchanged today was getting warm alot also. Shoot the one I'm using now is warm. I figured the phone just has that problem. I have a friend who complain of theirs getting hot. Neither of us have experienced the shut down issue though. And I get it just from browsing the web!! I would have expected Motorola to discover this temperature problem during testing. They probably decided "it's not extreme, so we'll still sale a couple million." Heck Apple HAS BIGGER issues with signal problem & they are still selling like Red Lobster's biscuits.

Same thing... I am using Faux's 2.0 kernel. Using Antutu CPU Master Free for now to adjust speeds. I've seen the temp @ 41C a couple of times. I have the profile set to powersave with a min of 216 and max of 1300.
I have not had any shutdown issues but, I do have an issue with my widgets disappearing on me randomly.

When you say burning, do you mean just uncomfortably warm, like a really warm hot pad? Do you mean so warm it will actually give you a burn and blisters?
Mine gets uncomfortably warm at times when the CPU is really chugging, but not hot enough to burn or hurt me.

overheating like mad

ok so heres the problem. a few days ago i drop my nexus 4 and it cracked the back glass.
what ive have notice is the phone getting super hot now. even when i have my uv setting its runs blazing hot. at first i though it was just the heat from the weather. but the other night i left it plug in and went to sleep. (i turned off data) the next day i woke up and went to get my phone from the stand and it was to hot to hold and i notice the phone being off and charging but the charging icon was blueish purple. i unplugged the phone right away and left it alone. it took it over 30min to cool down. it was so hot you could not hold it for more than 30 secs.
I am wondering if me droping it might have caused a short on the board? I have put it in airplane mode and charged it the day of to see if it would help and it sort of did help.
today i drop it again on the floor and the network cut right now and i had to use air plane mode on and off to get it to find network again.
any advice would be great. I am not worried about the back glass being cracked i can replace it. but want to know if it should be sent in for warranty?

It seems like in first case the battery broke down. You can try to open it and see if the battery became bigger, or to service as the second fall has damaged it more.

Hmmm...it may be battery controller for example.
If it was only battery, its simple to recover byself but as it was one more drop and the promlem for charge is deeper -> better way to go to service.
whats your cpu temp? battery temp? whats youre definition of "overheating like mad"?
while plug in charging without doing anything just wifi and cell on it runs at 40-45c its use to top out at 36c
the other day when it did that thing where it was super hot the phone was off but the last temp the app recorded was 60c. but it was way hotter then that just the phone shut off i guessing it reach max temp shutdown or something but even after it shutdown and the phone was charging it was too hot to hold. you could say cook an egg on it hot!

well, 40-45C while charging is very normal. but to reach 60C while charging.. what was your phone laying on? a couch cushion? something else that can be an insulator?
