The Nexus 4 I have now is running hot. Just browsing internet for 30 mins and the part next to the lens is burning my hand! Anyone feel uncomfortable using it?
Mine gets warm, but that's pretty much it.

When you say burning, do you mean just uncomfortably warm, like a really warm hot pad? Do you mean so warm it will actually give you a burn and blisters?
Mine gets uncomfortably warm at times when the CPU is really chugging, but not hot enough to burn or hurt me.

As suggested above, download free market application such as battery monitor widget which will display phone temp.
As warm and hot are very subjective terms....where as Degrees C aren't!

Just picked up this phone today, and so far I love it! The only complaint I have about it is how warm the back/underside gets after using it for a little bit (more than 5 minutes). Does anyone notice this happening with their phones?
Short answer: No
Long answer: No, not at all
Mine doesn't get hot at all. The G2 I had prior got very hot.

The only time my phone gets warm is when I playing angry birds. And If I play angry birds while it's charging it gets hot.
For whatever reason, after rooting...it was getting a little on the warm side when I installed setcpu. It didnt seem to be working correctly anyhow so I uninstalled it...no more warm phone.
im runnin it stock out the box with a few apps downloaded. i have only felt it getting warm when i have had the wifi tethering(hotspot) on.
Mine doesnt at all.... my nexus one used to get warm while charging and i havent experienced that with this device at all
For those of you who are NOT experiencing the phone getting warm, do you have your phone in a case? I'm wondering if the cases are keeping the heat in, thus making some of the phones get warm.

So you are saying that the phone in a case is keeping it cool...?
Regardless, mine is in a case, and it's very cool to the touch. In fact, SetCPU says the battery temp is 77°F right now.

No, I was asking if people who've claimed their phones run cool (not hot), is it because your phone isn't in a case? Mine is in the T-Mo case that has the rubber insert with the white plastic backing, and it definitely gets warm after using it for a while. I'm just wondering if having a case on these phones is making them run warm, as if the heat can't dissipate from the phone.
Sorry for any confusion.

Hmmm...possible QC issue? Mine gets a little warm from time to time, and may be directly related to what's running. I've been on the xda app for a good 30 minds now and it's a little warm on the battery door, but not significantly, and definitely not hot. Playing Angry Birds it gets warmer, but that **** consumes battery like it's goin out of style anyway.
I've not noticed it get uncomfortably hot at all though.

Same here. I was thinking maybe it was the metal back-plate acting as a "conductor" from the heat of the battery, but thus far, I've only felt it get hot while playing Angry Birds (no case too).
Hello, I'm just as you are, Brand new out of the box, I'm using it a bit...gets warm.
If its charging...gets warm. Battery goes down fast also. Not that I dont play with it but I cannot make it thru the day with single charge. I will propably get two more batteries.
Mine seems to get warm pretty often and I don't feel like the battery is lasting very long either, I have posted in some of the battery threads about that topic. I wonder if I need to return it and get a new one.
It doesn't seem like it should get that warm so frequently. I have a case but I only use it when I am out and about, and it still gets hot when I use it at work or home without the case on.
Mine wasn't perm root running stock. But running iced glacier with the overclock kernel, it gets warm, even though I don't overclock it. Stock stay about 32 C, iced glacier gets up around 42 C
I have not noticed mine getting warm at all, even under heavy use such as Angry Birds. My G1 on the other hand, would get quite warm even under moderate use.
Seems like when,i use my phone between 20 30 min intervals it gets real hot in the back. I have a case and the whole case gets hot.

I haven't had any issues with this. Used the sirius/xm app for about 2 hours and it wasn't even warm.
mine actually gets really hot as well. i used google navigation for about 30 minutes today and the back got really hot, mostly at the bottom half of the phone. i have a incipio feather case and the case got warm as well. i haven't had the overheating affect any performance issues though but am a little worried that it's getting so hot. are you going to bring yours in to have it looked at?

Same here, used navigation for about 20 minutes and the phone was very warm.
im not sure what to make of this. the first day i had the phone, i had a missed call, and the phone got pretty warm in my pocket.?!?!?! later, talking on the phone and it got to be almost HOT.
yesterday i had a couple of 20 minute browsing sessions and the phone just got good and warm. but it dosnt seem to effect permormance at all, and the battery isnt draining too fast or anything, so im not worried about mine at this point.
nope mine is always cool as a cucumber
Mine gets warm/gentle hot when browsing or doing any stuff that needs data transfer over 3G/H.
Have a movie going on (from SD) for ~2 hours now, and it is still cool.
Having come from the N1 where this was a constant issue I can tell you it is due to placement of parts. The CPU sits immediately behind the lower part of the phone. Heavy CPU use will result in a hot phone.
Also keeping it in your pocket will heat it up too. Body heat and background processes that use the CPU.
It is only and issue if you are very hot for a long time. Can result in reboots and crashing.
The back of mine did get rather warm in the car after using Nav for ~30 minutes, however this doesn't seem any different than what my old Tilt did and is normal for smart phones.
If your phone does actually get hot enough to power itself off, then I'm guessing either you've got it in a very poor case (or warm pocket with no ventilation), or it's defective.
Pandora alone shouldn't be enough to make the phone hot. I'd suggest try running it with the phone sitting on a table and no case. If it still gets hot after 20 minutes, exchange it. If it doesn't, get a new case.
I also have the feather incipio case. It got so hot it crashed.... Nice case but worried if it keeps getting hot it may, cause, life of phone to, be a lot shorter!!!
If it happens again I'm going to take it to ATT.

My Atrix that I exchanged today was getting warm alot also. Shoot the one I'm using now is warm. I figured the phone just has that problem. I have a friend who complain of theirs getting hot. Neither of us have experienced the shut down issue though. And I get it just from browsing the web!! I would have expected Motorola to discover this temperature problem during testing. They probably decided "it's not extreme, so we'll still sale a couple million." Heck Apple HAS BIGGER issues with signal problem & they are still selling like Red Lobster's biscuits.

Hey guys,
I just received my new black TPU case. It fits next to perfectly and makes my phone feel way more sturdy, so I'm very happy so far . Now I have one question: will TPU cases become hot easily? Of course too much heat will not be good for my phone and when it turns summer here again, I want to know if it might get my phone to become too hot, especially since it's black.
I don't know if it is a stupid question, but then I will know that at least too
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
That's a strange question.
It sounds like your trying to say if the tpu case will emit heat on its own. LOL
1. You should not leave your phone out in the sun. That's how it gets hot during the hot summer. (That's why you have pockets.)
2. The environment you're in will affect the temperature of the phone but not too much. For example, a outside temperature of 25 degrees Fahrenheit will decrease the temperature to about maybe about 4-5+ degrees lower. But the phone is still operable.
3. I have been using tpu cases for years and it has never been a problem. I never thought about it either. You bought the case you use it. Otherwise, you can leave it naked and free.
(Please don't leave your phone out in the hot sumer hot.) Keep it in your pocket or backpack with the case on and away from hard objects that can damage the screen.

Thanks for your reaction. I didn't mean that it would emit heat, but more that it would trap it. The thing I was concerned about would in be in summer in my room whilst the phone would be charging. Especially when I'm playing the PS3 there in summer temperature would rise quite a bit and the battery of my old ace went up to 40°C

Hey guys so basically we everytime I play a game the temperature of the Nexus 4 increases greatly, and we can feel the heat radiating from the back.
So what I do now is place the Nexus 4 in the fridge for about 3/4 minutes and the temperature then reduces from 40°C to around 30°C which is around normal.
I'm not sure if this is good for the phone it self, so I ask your opinion. Please contribute.
Thanks.

It likely isn't. I believe it'll cause some condensation, and cause liquid to build-up inside and/or on the device, and liquid isn't too kind to electronics.
40C is nothing lol, my phone gets like that when am on browser, when am on chrome its closer to 50-60C.
you have a quad core phone, itll get hot when you push the cpu(gaming). this is normal. you feel the heat through the back glass because they used glass to help transfer the heat out of the phone faster. one thing you can do that will keep the phone cool is to not use the phone.
Just flash a custom kernel and UV..simple as that!!
You shouldn`t cool your phone in fridge. There is too high humidity

How do they come up with it :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:.
Maybe you better cool your own brain
place the phone on a sheet of metal or glass to conduct the heat, you shouldn't put it in the fridge depending how wet it is inside,

This came to mind when I read your post.
You know how to break glass right? And you're putting a hot glass front and back phone in the fridge? I wouldn't make a habit of it and expect anything good to result.
My advice, besides finding a different ROM and/or kernel combo that suits your needs better; use a console/desktop for gaming.
Thanks to all those who answered my question. Luckily I only did it once phew!
I had a feeling that there would be something wrong with putting it in the fridge.
Not anything to worry about but an extra vent wouldn't hurt. Also the heat wave doesn't hurt.

I completely agree... I've been saying this for years... Lol
Difficult in such a small form factor but I'm more than positive this would have been one of the first issues they ran into.
I'm surprised though, why they used an aluminium heatsink over a small copper one and some decent thermal paste. It looks like a thermal pad...
I also noticed that the fins on the heatsink are thicker in one direction than the other, so the heat is trying to escape from the larger gaps... Which run right to the side of the case and against the NIC. I guess it would have helped rotating it 45 degrees so it escapes out the top and bottom quicker
Maybe its just mine though

I still have yet to have any heating issues, most of the time it is warm to the touch after an extended use, but nothing to worry about. I won't be modding my first OUYA at all so I'm hoping it stays that way (it's the special edition one), but I plan on buying a second one down the line to mess around with.
Truthfully, my phone gets hotter after a half hour of use than my OUYA does after 4 hours.
Yeah it doesn't get that hot but you think they would put I vent in the top since heat rises. Also a console this small should be cold as ice.

That doesn't seem all that high to be honest around normal desktop cpu numbers? Although the high end 70ish could be troublesome with warmer weather that should arrive any day now.

The standard throttling temperature for a Tegra 3, where it starts to underclock, is at 75°C
So there is not too much room left for overclocking!
Soon we will see better printed cases I'm sure.
