I've noticed that the device is pretty hot. I'm not sure, which is why I want to verify this with you.
I've used the "Battery Indicator" app which shows that the temp is 34-37 Celsius.
Does that seem about right?
Thank you
yep that's perfectly normal : )

Really? Cause it always feels hot in my hand....
Could it be that I'm just hot (cause the weather here is hot as well)?
What would be too hot ( I mean what temperature ).
I've had the phone restart itself twice yesterday after getting too hot (don't know the temp it was at though)

34-37c is absolutely normal. Its quite cold where I am atm, and the battery is 37c.
You've also no idea that the phone restarted due to heat. I've gone through 5 replacements now for various reasons, and they all got pretty warm under use. However one of them got stupidly hot, so hot you couldn't even hold onto it without hurting your hand. Thats why I got that one replaced.
And yes, if the ambient temperature is hot, it'll make the phone feel hotter aswell.
None of my GSII's have ever restarted on their own though. Could've been due to an app/widget though.
There has been 2-3 threads on this, one of which I created myself.
It's normal for the device to get quite hot, especially around the camera at the back and the screen near the top of the phone when gaming or watching videos over wifi. It shouldn't get so hot it can't be held though. It also doesn't help if you have a case on the phone, especially a thick gel-type one. I'm currently looking for a thin perforated cover, like the official Samsung one, but unlike that one with protection for the top and the bottom of the device. I suspect these holes will help with heat dissipation.
The phone has inbuilt safety for overheating I believe, although mine has never gotten hot enough to activate it. The phone will shut down if it thinks any more heat will lead to damage.

Thanks!
Was just about to ask about the case, since I bought a black gel one.
So do any of you know of a case that won't affect the heat ( a lot )?
I am honestly afraid to walk with the device without a case so that I don't break the screen (or scratch it) or break the phone in half (it looks so delicate!)
Like I said, the perforated covers look the best for preventing heat build up, although the official Samsung case doesn't protect the top or bottom corners, which perversely are the most likely parts to be damaged if the phone is dropped. I'd like to get hold of a cover that looks like that but with all round protection.
But, is it also "normal" that the phone gets incredibly hot when you play music with headphones on?
I seem to have experienced all the issues everybody went through (except for the shutdown) but nobody ever mentioned music (i am talking about 3 minutes playback not hours!)
Anybody with the same issue?
Take the back case off and smell near the top left of the phone..
When mine got hot a weird smell came from it.
It's probably worth checking with something like osmonitor that you haven't got a stuck task.
A few times mine has got really hot and it was a process using 96% cpu...
Most recently it was SocialHub which I don't even use! Had to reboot the phone to stop it as it wouldn't die.
I also had extremal heating in that area while playing angrybirds and after I move app from SDcard to internal memory - All comes OK. So I suppose it is because your apps ar data (music etc) located on SD and some of them due to speed limits heats during work. (it is in addition to WiFi and other network activity). Cause when I plug SD into comp by adapter and perform long file framsfer it also heats
So is this thing hotter than the original Galaxy S? I can live with the phone at that temp, but any higher is questionable.
It will shut down if it gets to hot. And I guess it takes quite a bit because a few months ago on engadget.com I saw some video of an iPhone a palm phone and I think a nexus one on a grill to see which one will either break or shut down first. And after like a minute on a grill it finally shut off. So I wouldn't worry about it unless its so hot u can't hold it. Once with my evo I was using 4g GPS Bluetooth. And charging the phone and it got up to around 115° (around 46° in celcius) and was fine. I shut it down tho when I noticed it got that high tho haha

Mine (running XWKE7) went to 50 c when gaming "we rule" in game hub with charger plugged in. No external SD installed though.
Also keep in mind that fatter phones have more space to dissipate the heat. This phone is thin thin. That heat has to go somewhere! That's why I want a case that vents

as soon as I start playing "real football 11" i can essentially cook an egg on the phone. Other games are fine though
Could it be due to the installation of overclocking apps? Didn't notice it was this hot during my first few days of usage.
In the first few days after I got my SGS II the phone went really very hot every time I charged it or when I played a game or even when I watched a movie.
Since I use Lite'ning Rom and banned some system apps the problem vanished.
So for me it seems to be a software-sided problem.

When you say burning, do you mean just uncomfortably warm, like a really warm hot pad? Do you mean so warm it will actually give you a burn and blisters?
Mine gets uncomfortably warm at times when the CPU is really chugging, but not hot enough to burn or hurt me.

Having just come off the phone to my Network, I'm worried about my choice of Nexus 4. My first one I have had less than a week and this morning the back glass went ping whilst it was sitting on the sofa doing nothing, the entire back just shattered all on its own.
The Network operator advised there are issues with leaving the phone on charge for long periods and the battery overheating causing the glass to shatter. I was offered an alternate phone, but I actually like the Nexus so am giving it another go. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?
I'm used to charging my phone overnight whilst in bed as I don't feel this is excessive over charging????
This.. this is making me concerned for my phone.. I've never left it charging over night intentionally as it wears down battery health but I have forgotten with my other phones..
It's the heat, do you live in a child country, or keep the ac low? Since the glass is thick, the temperature gradient between the two sides causes expansion like in a bi metallic strip, causing it to bend, and eventually crack as strain goes beyond the critical point of elasticity. 11th grade physics

Long story short, don't subject the phone to a temperature gradient of more than 7-10 degrees Celsius, the glass will break, gorilla or no gorilla

No such thing as all modern phones/batteries have circuitry built in to prevent overcharging. The phone will tell the AC adapter to stop supplying power and as such it does. You can keep devices plugged in for days without any current reaching the battery. If your phone is still charging past 100% then that's a faulty AC adapter which should be replaced.
It's -20C outside now while inside being 20C so that's a 40 degree difference and I have no issues with my phone just cracking out of no where. Glass surely will crack under drastic temp changes but definitely not that easy, especially tempered glass on (like such on cars).

I can only go by what my Network told me, I was placed on hold whilst they contacted the Nexus Team whoever they are. When he came back he stated that I had left my phone charging for too long which would have likely caused the glass to fail.
Even I was shocked when I saw the shattered glass and thought they're going to think I dropped it. But then dropping the phone with the special glass shouldn't cause it to shatter, maybe a crack or two, but as per the picture this is an all over shatter.
Maybe I just had a one off duff phone, time will tell as I've ordered a replacement as I actually love the phone itself. Had a HTC for 2 years with not a scratch as I look after my things.

Maybe they thought it was funny and were winding me up then. I guess they just replace phones for no reason?
I'm pretty sure if there were no known faults they wouldn't just offer a free exchange or an alternate phone if they thought I'd smashed the thing myself.
Mine broke by being in my pocket just the other day. It's on it's way to LG right now for possible Warranty work.

Its not the glass affected by temperature changes, rather the metal components and frame that are. This "can" cause glass to crack.
Did your phone have any kind of skin or protector on the back?
I have heard stories of cracking from temp changes.
I have a front and back protector and have not had any trouble with mine going from zero degrees outside to 70 inside or vice versa.

Are you making this story up mate? I don`t believe a word of it and it sounds like troll language to me Damage like that seems to be caused by a fall (flat on it`s back) rather than a overheated battery imo. It would take a sudden 40-50 degrees Celsius increase and most probably the glas would melt rather than break. Breakage is caused by temperature differences between the inner and outer side off the glas. And you don`t have it fixed allthough they offered it too you?
Hi
It looks like a typical stress fracture of the glass.
I'm not convinced normal changes in temperature is the cause as otherwise we'd not be using glass for windows!
Charging overnight is perfectly safe and doesn't harm the battery. Lithium batteries explode if constantly charged so the charging circuitry is carefully designed to monitor the charge and stop it when the battery is full. There are also safe guards in place, which likely the red flashing LED issue is an indicator of a fail-safe being triggered.
Sometimes lithium batteries go wrong. The lithium batteries in the Nexus are not in a rigid metal can like most but a different technology that allows them to be in a soft foil packet, much like you might find food in. This means a fault can cause the battery to expand, this would deform the back, stressing the glass and breaking it. Typically with such a fault there will be heat, so 1st line support on hearing of customers finding a hot phone with a smashed back may be coming to the wrong conclusion that heat is the cause.
The only people that know the truth are LG who will find these phones winging their way back to them, and unless this is a huge problem where a recall is required, we will probably never know or be told of a confirmed cause of these "Unexplained Spontaneous Back Shattering" events or USBS, and there probably isn't one single cause anyway.
Regards
Phil

Why would I make it up? I asked the question if anyone else has had similar issues as when my replacement arrives on Tuesday, if it happens again, I would like to know if it is infact a common issue.
Had I have dropped the phone I would be asking if anyone knows how I could get it fixed. Why would anyone waste time posting a load of lies?
As it happens 3 Network have advised they are aware of over charging causing the back glass to break, although I don't see any warnings or advice over how long you should keep a phone on charge.
I fail to see how what I have stated has given you reason to think I am trolling. I am happy with the phone itself and feel it's worth another go as it's fast and to be honest is one of the best handsets I have had.

Now, this I can agree with. The reason I have given the phone a second chance is that I believe I had a duff phone. I was offered a different phone, but stuck with the Nexus as I actually love it so far.
When I contacted 3, they placed me on hold for a few minutes and came back to advise they had spoken to the Nexus Team, wether that be at 3 or Google, I have no idea. The conversation was almost accusing me of over charging, but being an average phone user I do not know what over charging is. I just plug the phone in and leave it as I always have with previous phones.
The phone itself was not in any pocket, but just sitting on the sofa when it shattered and I too find it hard to believe it just shattered by itself, but in all honesty it did! I have no reason to come on here and say otherwise.
Let's hope the replacement will give me many hours of use, I've ordered a 2 cases to ensure if I do drop it, I get some protection.

I have charged overnight every night since November with no ill effects. I've used various nexus and non-nexus chargers.

I've never not charged a phone all night. If I had to wake up at 1 or 2 in the morning to unplug this phone I would sell it today, that is ridiculous. I can't believe that LG or any company would think that this would be acceptable in 2013. Maybe back in the stone age but not today. With that being said, my phone is still in perfect condition with a protector on the front and back. The only thing that drives me crazy is the creakiness of the phone. I hope this crap gets straightened out.

Hello. So, I like to run, and quite often or not I hold my phone whilst running - as my running shorts don't have pockets. I should probably invest in some kind of arm strap or something. But either way, could running whilst holding my phone damage anything on the phone, internally, or externally? Or can I keep on doing it?
Also, dust. Today when running, I went past a builders yard and there was dust everywhere. Could that harm my phone?
Finally! A friend of mine shone his S3's camera on the back of my phone to see the pattern. Could that bright light do any damage to the camera?
Thank you for reading.
If it drops, the back glass will most definitely break. Maybe the front as well. If its sealed up properly dust should not be a problem. If your in an area where light is so bright it damages phone parts then you have other problems to deal with.

I've been snowboarding with the N4 in my coat pocket for the past two months which has involved temperature changes ranging from -5 degrees to 70+ degrees within a single day, various climbs to the top of peaks, lots of vibration from different riding conditions, abrupt stops from dropping off of various cliffs/jumps etc. and the phone is still 100% flawless and has never had a single functionality issue. I do have a Diztronic case on it but the screen has no protection and is holding up perfectly. In fact, this is the first phone I've been able to put through its paces which has not developed a single scratch on the screen.
I can't speak for dust since I haven't really run into that much but in terms of durability of vibration and movement, I'd say the phone is pretty damn solid.
Ive used this for the past 3 phones and the N4 fits snugly (but not troublesome to put in or tough on the phone). I ran with it two days ago for the first time and it worked just as well as my GNex.

Ive run with all of my phones on my arm like that, as does my girlfriend. It may seem bulky but once you get it strapped down you dont really notice it. I use the Motorola Bluetooth headphones to get rid of cables and I use Cardiotrainer/Runkeeper to help track my performance.
If you're using a screen cover, that Tune Belt Armband might cause problems. I used to use that with my Nexus S when I was walking the dog and if I didn't peel the phone out carefully, it would catch the Zagg protector and bring it with it.
I run a lot and absolutely can't stand the bulk of a phone, even with the Tune Belt. Get a Garmin watch.

Hey guys so basically we everytime I play a game the temperature of the Nexus 4 increases greatly, and we can feel the heat radiating from the back.
So what I do now is place the Nexus 4 in the fridge for about 3/4 minutes and the temperature then reduces from 40°C to around 30°C which is around normal.
I'm not sure if this is good for the phone it self, so I ask your opinion. Please contribute.

It likely isn't. I believe it'll cause some condensation, and cause liquid to build-up inside and/or on the device, and liquid isn't too kind to electronics.
40C is nothing lol, my phone gets like that when am on browser, when am on chrome its closer to 50-60C.
you have a quad core phone, itll get hot when you push the cpu(gaming). this is normal. you feel the heat through the back glass because they used glass to help transfer the heat out of the phone faster. one thing you can do that will keep the phone cool is to not use the phone.
Just flash a custom kernel and UV..simple as that!!

place the phone on a sheet of metal or glass to conduct the heat, you shouldn't put it in the fridge depending how wet it is inside,

You know how to break glass right? And you're putting a hot glass front and back phone in the fridge? I wouldn't make a habit of it and expect anything good to result.
My advice, besides finding a different ROM and/or kernel combo that suits your needs better; use a console/desktop for gaming.
