Artifacts on wallpapers - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Good day! I've purchased s8 yesterday and found one annoying thing. When i'm setting some dark wallpaper (using Samsung Themes), it looks fine, but when using Edge panel or on lock screen, when background image is blurry, some particular dark areas are not so smooth, they are looking like some high-compressed image, dark square artifacts. Is my display defective? Or is it a common issue? Please help...

I was hoping that the problem was in using wallpaper with not so good quality (found one with little to no artifacts), but then in completely dark room even there i found one place with those artifacts

Can someone please check this image set as wallpaper? On a lock screen, when you are prompted to draw a pattern to unlock your phone, look at blurry wallpaper in a dark room with brightness set to medium. On my phone i see those wierd artifacts.

Thank you for your help, but that's not quite what i was asking. You see, as wallpaper it's fine, no problems whatsoever, it's when this wallpaper is blurry i'm seeing those artifacts. Could you please try to use edge panel in a dark room ( i used bathroom with the lights out) with medium brightness?
And unfortunately you cannot capture it on screenshot, would you be so kind just to tell me if there anything wrong with the image?
Thank you again

It seems that i also have the same problem and i never used edge panel..
Are we sure its hardware and not software related?

I've asked for help on different forums, and i've been told that it can actually be something of a normal state, amoled displays are great at showing black color, but grey-ish in low lit environment and with low brightness can show this simptoms. So i don't know, maybe we should just ignore it. I'll continue research on that subject.

Same here!
No, that's not just your phone. I have the same problem with my s8+ too. All black wallpapers that I've used with bright objects in it causes that annoying 'artifact.' I see it whenever I had to put my PIN on my phone in a dark room. It is annoying! other than that, everything seems ok so i'm guessing that it's caused by a bug.

[Q] shadowed/darker screen area, is this normal?

Hi.
I received my Nexus 10 yesterday and, after a few hours of use, I've started noticing a shadowed/darker strip along the top of the display (the side that holds the front camera). Take a look at this photo:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
The effect is not very noticeable in this image (I'm not a good photographer), but to the naked eye is pretty obvious. The photo at this post shows a similar effect (the left side is darker than the right).
Does your Nexus 10 also suffer this problem or mine is a faulty unit and I have to return it?
Thanks.
Cheers,
mprost
Can't really see it on the photo. Is that a white screen on full brightness?

Yes, it's a white screen on full brightness, sorry for not pointing that out before. Maybe the following photo shows the issue better (full brightness again) (I know it's difficult to see it, I look at my N10's screen and I see it clearly, but then I look at my photos and the issue is not that obvious):
It's the shadow along the right end of the display.
Thank you for your help.
Cheers,
mprost
The screen looks a bit murky on the first photo. Second one doesn't look too bad though.
The issue your having might be because the backlighting isn't uniform.
Can you take a photo of a fully black screen to see if backlight bleed might be causing the issue.

Well it's nothing to do with backlight bleed then. The bleed on yours looks quite good btw. I assume it's completely unnoticeable at 50% brightness. Any chance of a photo at 50% brightness for comparison?
I'm not sure what else it could be atm. Is it only noticeable on a white screen or can you see it on other colours too?

I first noticed it just browsing the web and I can definitely appreciate it with other colors besides black, any colour in fact, is like this area was dirty or, more precisely, slightly tinted or poorly illuminated.
Thanks.

I asked for a replacement, which have just arrived. The new one has the same issue BUT is less noticeable (I have them both side by side right now, I could take photos if somebody is interested). I think that if the replacement unit had been the first one received, maybe I wouldn't have noticed the issue (who knows).
Unfortunately the new one has a dead pixel, so I will also have to return it.

No problem, there you go, the one in the left is the first to come, the one I think suffers from the issue the most; the one in the right is the new one, the one with the dead pixels (although, upon second inspection, now I think it may be dust under the screen). The shadowed area is at the top:
The photo has been taken in a dark room, full brightness in both devices.

Thanks!

Yellow tint issue on S4's screen

I have this annoying yellow tint on my S4's screen, but disappears when the phone is tilted over 45 degrees. Is this faulty ? Shall I return it ? Or is there a way I can fix the gamma through an app without rooting the phone ?

Mine doesn't look like that, sorry. But I have lag. ):
Is it just in Chrome?
Try Chrome Settings ---> Developer Tools ---> Uncheck 'Enable Tilt Scrolling'
@raqball nope this is found everywhere, even instagram and facebook.
Ah, no clue then sorry..
@raqball can you do a quick check with yours, similar to the one I did and let me know what you get ?
Go to settings display screenmode and use something else other than adapt display. Im currently using dynamic and my tint is gone.
ATT S4 Rooted. Beastin.
4.2.2
I had it on standard all this time (including screenshot) .. Putting it on dynamic gives the same result :
Damn I was hoping it was that because it fixed it for me. Maybe a hardware issue?

@stevehkim I'm not sure tbh .. thanks for the suggestion though. It's quite annoying after I realised that it exists ... Didn't bother me before I noticed it :\
I found an app called Screen Adjuster but its not really efficient.
I had this with my S3 and got used to it. I was told in those forums that this is just how these AMOLED screens are made.
My display is perfectly white though... Side by side comparisons between the Note II, Microsoft Surface RT (perfect white display), and a Sony HDTV. My S4 beats or meets them all.

Can you post a picture comparing your screen to a laptop's screen ? I just want to see how different it looks. Also, do you suggest I return it to the store and get another one ?

Acer 24" LCD Monitor vs S4
I'll do one of my Surface or TV later.
I made a Pure White image to use for testing on the S4, use it instead of Chrome which uses a grey color in it's UI and for some reason the S4 screen brightness dims on Chrome automatically (and you can't change it). Download it if you want to do comparisons again.

Vertical and horizontal banding?

So I just received my Nexus 4 today, and I absolutely love it. Came from the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon. Switched to T-Mobile, and everything has been smooth so far.
However, after customizing up my home screen, (the same way it was set up on my Galaxy Nexus), I'm noticing a grid-like pattern in the background. I cannot tell if it's the background that I'm using, or if my phone has a faulty screen. It doesn't look like this on my previous phone. I attached a photo for you all to see. Was this/has this been a reported issue in the past?
Also, I feel as though it would be logical to assume that if it were a faulty screen that is the culprit, then the anomalies wouldn't be detectable in a screenshot. True/False?

I should comment a bit further. I just took a photo of a piece of black paper and didn't notice any gray banding on it when viewed in the gallery.

This is a screenshot and no photo, isn't it?
The banding you mention should be in your wallpaper.
Other than that, you might see the IPS display's sensors.
They are located right under the glas in a banding pattern and can be seen in high sunlight sometimes.
I havent seen any threads on n4 screen banding... I'm happy we don't have galaxy nexus displays our phones!

Look carefully and zoom into the gray parts of the photo. The banding is certainly there. No need for an aggressive response. I also mentioned that the exact wallpaper on my Galaxy Nexus has none of the banding. It cannot be the wallpaper.
Edit: I just realized that you mentioned the gray boxes, not the gray top portion of the photo. My apologies. Indeed you're right. That's peculiar, though. Curious as to why the photo is pitch black and not banded on my Galaxy Nexus. The displays are quite similar, aren't they?

Blacks on the gnex were as black as black gets, being amoled. The n4 uses some form of LCD, I think it's ips, the blacks are black but you can notice defects dark sections in lower quality/high compression pictures.

Screen sharpening? Maybe it's just...

The freaking font. No seriously. The default LG font is way too thin and when displayed on a white surface is very uncomfortable to read.
I just installed Roboto font using iFont and I can no longer find any (noticeable) sharpening done on the phone.
This is not placebo. Try it yourself and be amazed! Maybe there's still a sharpening issue, somewhere. But switching the font has mostly cured it for me. Yay.

You're right. Still there. But bolder fonts make the sharpening effect a lot less annoying. I can finally use Press without poking my eyes out.
I can't wait for a fix to come out for this! As a photographer, I see a lot of beginner photographers over sharpening their pictures, giving the same effect. Now MY WHOLE PHONE DOES THIS CONSTANTLY. Just kills me.

It depends on the screen to be honest sometimes I'm shielding my eyes other times like this post can't see it. I am wondering if there is some algorithm running and it adapts constantly.

Yeah it's definitely more noticeable when there's a grey background. Load this page up on your phone.
Also, once I got the effect to pop-in (not sure how, if I come across it again I'll definitely try to reproduce it) so it's gotta be some kind of processing unrelated to the display firmware.
Changing the font to Roboto Condensed using iFont completely solved the text sharpening issue. Even when the test of the screen has halo artifacts, the font looks fine.
As for icons and other issues with oversharpening, they too come and go for me. Sometimes the screen looks amazing, other times everything is super sharpened. I wonder if it has to do with throttling?
It's not everywhere. It'll show up in apps that have bad QHD support. I didn't have any of it in the vast majority of apps I was using, but then I ran into older apps and it suddenly appeared.

This setting is very confusing for me, it is useless.
All you can do is positioning the ring. I like the setting with the ring put near camera icon, but its not that easy.

i've set the ring in the middle..in that position it loses too much blue colors...and a bit above yours...too dark for me in that position.
that tool is a good idea but is too hard to set...

Here's mine. I'm very happy with it.
I would rather prefer a tool to set the white level of the screen.
Compared my G3 to the wife's G2 today, my screen is very pinkish, hers is a perfect white, this is the only concern I do have with my G3
So one thing I have noticed is vertical adjustments change black and white and horizontal adjustments change color. Try making a setting and toggle on and off to compare, i like to go through my app drawer to see if the dark colors are too shaded. Another thing i do is use a reference like xda in chrome to see if the brown and yellow theme looks like it does on my laptop for a good consistency and nice deep color. I'm sitting at the camera icon as well but thought I'd share some ideas on testing and using visual references on things you've seen across different displays to know correct color tones.
Horizontal does hue..... which will more or less completely screw up your phone's color balance
Vertical does the contrast. Go into your laptop display or monitor and crank the contrast, your colors will start to haze and wash out a bit. Dropping it a smidge should make the blacks a bit more, well, black and your colors pop a little bit more.
It's be much nicer to have granular controls of the different colors... but at least this is something.

Yeah.... Hue is better known as "Why the F does my screen look like a smurf on an acid trip puked on my screen?" Any adjustment to that needs to be extremely fine and each color needs to be discrete. An all-in-one slider is about as useful as that HUE knob that us old-timers used to have on our televisions. Made everything look like a cheesy alternative music video from the early 80's.
Doesn't this affect the entire screen and the whole phone? Apps included?
