The freaking font. No seriously. The default LG font is way too thin and when displayed on a white surface is very uncomfortable to read.
I just installed Roboto font using iFont and I can no longer find any (noticeable) sharpening done on the phone.
This is not placebo. Try it yourself and be amazed! Maybe there's still a sharpening issue, somewhere. But switching the font has mostly cured it for me. Yay.

Tried it, it's still there. It won't show up on screenshots by the way, and it's most noticeable with black text on a grey background.

You're right. Still there. But bolder fonts make the sharpening effect a lot less annoying. I can finally use Press without poking my eyes out.
I can't wait for a fix to come out for this! As a photographer, I see a lot of beginner photographers over sharpening their pictures, giving the same effect. Now MY WHOLE PHONE DOES THIS CONSTANTLY. Just kills me.

Glad to see I'm not crazy and that people have the same issue with the phone's over-sharpening

It depends on the screen to be honest sometimes I'm shielding my eyes other times like this post can't see it. I am wondering if there is some algorithm running and it adapts constantly.

Yeah it's definitely more noticeable when there's a grey background. Load this page up on your phone.
Also, once I got the effect to pop-in (not sure how, if I come across it again I'll definitely try to reproduce it) so it's gotta be some kind of processing unrelated to the display firmware.
Changing the font to Roboto Condensed using iFont completely solved the text sharpening issue. Even when the test of the screen has halo artifacts, the font looks fine.
As for icons and other issues with oversharpening, they too come and go for me. Sometimes the screen looks amazing, other times everything is super sharpened. I wonder if it has to do with throttling?
It's not everywhere. It'll show up in apps that have bad QHD support. I didn't have any of it in the vast majority of apps I was using, but then I ran into older apps and it suddenly appeared.

hello, well you just left on the screen attached to the board when you set a white background or some application that has a white background you see a thin green line? or is it just my case? try to look you can barely see, but you see ... miraccomando with a white background is dark .. if no one sees practically nothing ... try to check the open page of google and look on the edge of the left is or there is a tiny green line?
hmmm weird.. but that is actually true.. its just like one thin line of green pixels
yes, just like one thin line of green pixels
I see it too, and I really don't think its a problem. Didn't even notice it until now.
i dont notice it in my daily use of the phone though.. if i did, i would probaly get it fixed.. its only when it is a completly white background, like google

ok, I was concerned that this green line of pixels related only to my galaxy s...thanks

It's not a line of pixels, it's either an unused part of the screen's matrix, a sealing material for the screen layer casing, or the tip of the integrated touch panel.
Either way, what you see is not a part of the 800X480 matrix you've been promised, and i really had to make an effort untill i saw it. If this thread wouldn't be here, i would never know it's there.
It sometimes boggles my mind how far people would go to find "problems" with their new belongings, it's like they like to complain.

meh, i guess sarcasm doesn't work in text.
Anyways, the same green line is there. Not suprising considering the screen is made by samsung as well.
This is related to the PenTile Matrix. I don't know the order of the pixels on the SGS so I can't exactly explain why it's the way it is. Anyways this is the difference:

Looks like a minor bug. Put a black to white edge inwards from the edge and there is no green band. Not hard to fix, but dont much care about it either.
Samsung's Galaxy S uses an RGBW stripe, opposed to the N1's RG:BG stripe.
Here's some info:
http://www.nouvoyance.com/
i have the same "issue". a bit annoying to be honest.
i have a problem with my galaxy s. i had root my galaxy. and install rayanZa lag fix. but the problem is about freezing screen ! when i am typing an sms the down corner of display at most freezes. its random. when i press power button and again prees it(tyrn off on display) it works goood again. or when i am sliding top bar to end of display(down) fully it sticks and i must press back button to close this bar. i did hard reset and flashing but its same yet... i did screen diagnostic test by the codes and it seem ok. display seems normal and no dead pixel it seems to have. all phisycall seems normal. sorry for my bad english . whats problem? any solution?
just to confirm if everyone is talking about the same lines i am seeing on SGS.
here are pics
there is a line intercepting the search box
http://i55.tinypic.com/2isfjif.jpg
there is a line beside the S in the middle of the pic (or intercepting the S) and there is another one directly below that line.

Not sure if its my phone and it needs to go back.
At the earpiece there is a flat spot that runs across and then another one just below it.
Seems like the process to get the curve threw them a little since its wavy all over but that is something you have to look for and can look past. The earpiece area is what I am most concerned with. Would like to know if others are seeing this.
would you be kind enough to post a picture?
Probably have to pull out the gear to do that but will be taking pics of the vibrant tomorrow so can do it then.
If you look at the speaker and then to the right and left of it there is a flat spot that runs through the glass from side to side if that makes sense.
Either way I will get pics up tomorrow.

It could be designed into the screen but there is another line under it and its not real pretty when the phone is sitting on a desk and you see that. Guess I am just used to the flat smooth screens like the other galaxy s phones.
Is it like, indented into the glass? Looks strange
Mine doesn't look like that. Mine is smooth throughout.
Ok I see it in the pics. That kinda stinks I thought Google said the design was to be the screen blending in to the phone. Bummer.
Going to the store tomorrow and checking out others. If it was a common issue I would just deal with it. Oh well.

It is. Its a flat spot and I can see why its there with the speaker hole there and the cam and prox sensors. Seems they could make a smooth transition or I got a dud.

Maybe it's flat cuz of the front camera and the light sensors.

Thats what I am wondering. I had to use the light to get it in the pics. I deal with glass all day so see these things more then the average person. The bottom is nice and smooth . but the top is a different story. I wonder if others have this and just don't notice it. I hope not but maybe the pics will help others see what I am seeing and give a definite answer.
Either way I am going to go check out some others at BB tomorrow and will report back with what I find.
It may not be a issue at all and part of the design of the phone.
same here but i didnt notice it until you mentioned it.

Try Launcher Pro. Whenever I've seen someone on here complain about colour banding issues (especially with widgets!) I've recommend they try it and they've all agreed it's resolved with that 1 change.
I'd recommend Launcher Pro for many, many other reasons anyway, but it does fix this particular issue
I installed launcher pro, not sure where to go from here. I Google android color banding and found many complaints. I notice the banding on certain website logos while browsing and I even see it on the keyboard right now.
Are you saying that Launcher Pro didn't solve the problem with wallpapers and widgets? Obviously it can't affect any other app that runs but it should have made a difference to the home screen.

I dont think it did, I hit the home button, selected launcher pro, then I added a the weather widget to my home screen, I still see the banding on it. When I select the widget and move it around, the banding is gone, but as soon as I let go and drop it, I see banding.
You dont have banding? goto neowin.net with the android browser, look at the top left at the neowin logo, tell me if you see banding.
EDIT: I used the stock launcher and moved the weather widget around, even while moving it, it still had the banding, so launcher pro is effecting something.

Same for me. The images looked nice but they were really low res so they became blurry once I've installed/set them.

They are not actually low resolution. its just when the tablet optimizes it to the tablet resolution, they become blurry. Its like keeping the original resolution but zooming alot on it.

Yes they are low res. You can save them to your device and check out yourself. Some are like half of what you need. If you enjoy the app fine, but don't deny the obvious.
This is very obvious the first few hours using the phone. Horrible sharpening halos around texts most noticeable on gray and non white backgrounds. It kills the black contrast of the text as well making it look gray and not to mention a pain to read. "image processor from GS3 is from a newer generation than any existing devices, adding finer controls over useful parameters"

i agree. unless it is norm to put your phone very near your eyes, use a magnifying lens or microscope when using your phone daily.
I just viewed the linked pages on my gs3 and I'm having a very hard time seeing what you're talking about. How does the text look remotely grey? And what halos? Text is sharp and easy to read even when zoomed out a fair bit. As you'd expect since it's a 300+ ppi screen.
Are you talking about the anti-aliasing? You don't want the font to be anti-aliased or something? Even in your magnified photo, I can't see what the problem is?

It isn't the anti alisaing. I increased the contrast a little to show the problem more clearly.
Notice the halos around the characters? Still dont know what is wrong? In browser tap menu, brightness and colors, select level 1 power saving. This makes the display color a little bluish but also eliminates the sharpening and makes the text much better looking as it should. Compare it to default and see if you notice a difference.
