SECURITY in RECOVERY mode - Moto G4 Plus Questions & Answers

Well anyone who has stolen your phone can boot to twrp recovery and remove password / pattern and access your files easily even when a lockscreen is setup.
Is there a way to prevent this and lock recovery with a passcode or something and prevent them from accessing recovery mode.
Thanks for the help

As answered before, there's no point with a lockscreen/password/pattern/pin for recovery, as a knowledgeable person can simply flash (or boot into) another recovery and overwrite your settings.
The best way to protect your phone is to encrypt it, but that would mean trouble with regular (custom) ROM updates.
So, when you unlock, you trade security for freedom, for most users.

The former, yes, you can, and that is ROM dependent. The latter would be counterproductive (what happens when your fingerprint doesn't respond after multiple failed attempts?), and I don't recall it having been present in any ROM I have used.

We can use our pin or pattern if our fingerprint does not work and maybe I saw it on rr ROM on one my friend's phone and wanted that too in my cosmic os.
If you could not understand I was talking about the( screen shot attached) power button long press dialog box on lock screen by which people can switch of your phone without the password.

Sometimes, due to the wakeup bug present, the phone doesn't even light up by pressing the fingerprint button. In that case, if the power button is also disabled, then wouldn't it be counterproductive?
Anyway, that's besides the point, and I simple gave my opinion.

Double screen lock

Wanted to change to the screen lock where you do a certain pattern as opposed to just slide across screen. But when I enable it, the original slide across the screen lock is there as well so I end up having to unlock that, then the pattern lock.
So how do I turn off the one that just slides across the screen???
Cheers

You don't, it's impossible for now (without root).
Bollocks. Is it one of the many things that Orange have added? Like the also very annoying backup pish that kept popping up!!
Nope, it's in the generic firmware too.
Argh! So what's the point then!! I don't want two different locks!! Other than that, the phone is fantastic!!
The point is.. if you fail the pattern too many times then it locks the phone up completely.. so not having the swipe to unlock screen would cause many problems..!!

Doesn't lock up the phone (I tried it when I had it ), it just creates a 30 second timeout!

I have the same problem (Xperia Neo), I'm rooted. How do I remove the slide-unlock-thingy and keep only the pattern-unlock?
The only method I know is an app called Antilock that skips the slide to unlock screen but keeps the pattern unlock

[q] encryption not working

hi encryption just does not work on this device. i have tried it several time full charged and plugged in. you get a green android screen which just stays there unless you click the back button which brings you back to the home screen.
on the same question - what is the advantage of encryption if it only lets you use your screen lock password??
thanks..

on your first point - I think it is a known issue that encryption just doesn't work on the device (maybe on honeycomb over all, not sure)

Unable to access phone., Locked Out

Recently my friends SG5 was stolen, but she got it back. The person who stole it changed the password to unlock the screen. She does not know the new password and the fingerprint scanner no longer comes up as an option to unlock the screen. An option does appear though to use an alternate password to unlock the screen. She does not know the new password that the thief set. She also forgets her gmail account name. She wants to keep pictures and everything from the phone, so she does not want to do a factory data reset or erase anything. Is there any way to unlock the security on the phone so that she can access it again? Thank you.
Ask the one who stole it the new password or how he manage to change it. If you manage to recover the phone how hard can it be to ask the password at the same time?

Sounds fishy to me - sounds exactly what a thief would say to gain access to someone elses phone

I'm sure it does, but she is your average person who buys a phone from a cell phone carrier who doesn't tell her that her gmail account is important or anything else about it. She didn't know that she would need it. She didn't link it to her common email account because she didn't want Scroogled by Google having more information about her. Now she has her phone that she can't even use. Is there anyway to get the fingerprint scanner option to come back on? That way she could unlock it with her own fingerprint.

Not that simple. She is a substitute school teacher. A student stole her phone and later brought it back. The student doesn't remember the new password. Is there anyway to access the fingerprint scanner?

That is her last resort if she cannot get back into her phone to save pictures and text messages.

Well, its really easy to do i had the same problem but i didnt got my phone stolen if you need your photos/videos then install drivers in your windows pc and connect you phone to the pc via a usb cable and when you browse the phone you can copy every thing to your pc even its locked
After all its not an iphone xD after copying the documents take the battery out and removing it from tge pc put the battery in and dont power it on
Now you will have to use a special button combo to get into recovery mode and thats (VOL UP+HOME BUTTON+POWER BUTTON) you will have to press these at the same time and keep the holded until the phone goes in the recovery mode,
Now you will se diffrent options navigate to "WIPE DATA/FACTORY RESET* by using volme keys and press the power button to confirm the it will ask you for confirmation do that and your phone will reboot after a while than it will take some time for the first boot and BOOM you will be presented with the welcome screen and youre ready to use it again
Dont forget to hit the thanks button,it wont bite
Sorry for bad english i was in hurry

Thank you very much for that information and getting back to me so quickly. Would you know how to copy text messages from the phone too while it's locked?
The security features of the phone a designed to keep people from accessing some one else's private information. Since almost every possible "legitimate" recovery solution seems to be non functional, I think your friend should expect to lose a good bit of the data on her device and she should just be happy to have her device back.
If it were my device, I would not hesitate to completely wipe every last trace of data from before it was stolen. Usually restoring the factory firmware is the best way to achieve this. God knows what the other person who had access to the device loaded onto it and it is probably best not to even try to find out.
hello
you must flash wich odin firmware because the fingerprint is not possible to unlock

Security flaw

I have the fingerprint scan enabled in the lockscreen. I realized that to bypass that, all you have to do is press the home button twice to the camera mode, from there just hit the home button again and it takes you to your homescreen. That is a huge flaw that I cannot understand why it has not been addressed.
Nope, mine stays locked after leaving camera app. I have t mobile version.
Not on my sprint variant.

Doesnt work on my AT&T note5, open up the camera and I can take pictures, once it's closed it locks again.
Op. Did you check your timer on your fingerprint lock? It is possible you are doing this inside the unlocked window before it locks itself.
OK I figured it out. It may still be a flawless but it's not a security issue. If you test it out with a finger that is not registered to the phone it won't work. In other words the only person who could access the phone doing this is the owner of the phone using one of the fingers that is registered on the phone.

It's actually a bit amusing the fingerprint scanner is fast and accurate enough to create this impression.
Had me scared for a second cause mine "did" this too! Thankfully the finger print scanner on this phone is decent finally. The Note 4 was garbage, and even the S6 Edge when I had it was too slow to want to use it. Now this is just great.
You're right, I believe I activated the camera via home button at least three times before going to home screen.

Hi
I agreed with the lock screen issue.
It can be reproduce easily
1) Log into your homescreen as normal (dont matter if u r using pin, password or fingerprint)
2) Now, Pressed the "Power botton", your screen should shutoff/blackout as normal
3) Next, Pressed the "Power botton" ... your screen will come back ON ..at this moment just swipe the middle of your screen...
Wah-la...u login without giving any password/fingerprint autheticantion.
Note:
I have set it to "Lock Instantly with Power Key" and Lock Automatically to "Imeadiately"
Hopefully Samsung will fixed it sooner

Just tested and doesn't work, re-check that your settings were saved because I tried 5 times and I can only get it to "work" when I turn off "lock instantly with power key".

I went back to see if I had lock immediately selected and I didnt. So I changed it to immediately then proceeded to do the same test before and wasn't able to by pass the lock screen. Good catch and you're right.

Just to update... mine fixed after doing soft reset or reset back to factory settings. Now it works as design.
Just have to spend some extra time to restore after the reset.

Fingerprint issues

How do you get the phone to recognize youe fingerprint? It is so annoying how it keep failing to recognize the fingerprint and asks to enter the code or pattern.

Go to Settings -> Security -> Nexus Imprint. Follow on screen instructions to register your fingerprints (up to 5).
I believe there is a setting to not have to input a code every time, check to see if that is your issue. I only have to enter a pin after a reboot, then just the fingerprint unlocks the phone.

I didn't explain myself well I guess. It happens to not recognize the fingerprint and then asks for pattern/code. It is annoying.
First I would say to clean it well. Second i would suggest you reset the print and add extra sets too. Also what ROM, firmware ect are you running? I have had flawless experiences with my sensor across various ROMs. I do a full set scan for 4 fingers. My 2 pointers and my 2 middles as well as another scan set for odd positions. This ensures no matter what I'm holding or position my phone's in it will be easily unlocked.

I've had the same problem since the last week after updating a resurrection remix version. I think it's been doing something weird, but it'll unlock normal in the car and stuff so I don't know. Seems like when I put my finger on the sensor it will wake the device and want me to enter a PIN. If I put an unregistered finger on the sensor it won't wake it it'll stay black screen. It might be something to do with when you are at home with smart unlock. Hmmm....

I thought it could be the smart unlock and removed it but still same thing. Might have to go all stock and test it again. I had another nexus 6P before and that one you get unlocked really fast without any issues.
Edit: Found the issue. Double tap to lock ftom Nova was forcing the device to request pattern or pin.
