Any 6P Hardware Experts? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have seen a few people with an issue where if the phone gets wet, audio completely stops, and apps that use the speakers or microphone act very odd. https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/help/nexus-6p-audio-playback-error-app-t3476592 this is one of a few posts with the same issue.
Essentially audio won't won't through anything but Bluetooth, and apps like YouTube, Play Music, Sound Recorder, Video Recorder (but not camera as is doesn't use the microphone) all act strangely, and different from each other. Play Music for example constantly loads songs then skips to the next. The Camera works great, but as soon as it is switched to video, it says "cannot connect to camera."
I'm trying to figure out why this happens, and how to fix it. Some have said that cleaning the microphone works, but that doesn't seem to help most, and didn't work in my case. The microphone is not replaceable on the board. Actually there are three, but the "main" one on the back seems to be the common issue, but may not be.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

My uneducated guess would be moisture in the connections causing circuit shorts when enabled. If you arent feeding anything to the speakers or from the mic, the connections dont short out because there is nothing doing.
After having the 6P apart twice, the best guess for a fix I would have is to disassemble it and disconnect anything that has a ribbon cable. You can disconnect the front facing camera, bottom speaker, etc. Then let the whole thing dry out and reassemble. NOTE: disassembling this phone is not for the faint of heart! I did it to replace my battery and ended up cracking the LCD panel in the process.

I actually have the phone apart. I've cleaned all the corrosion off of everything with 90% isopropyl alcohol. The phone wouldn't turn on when I got it, now everything but the weird sound issue works great. It's been disassembled for weeks and is definitely dry, so no short circuit. At this point, I don't think the phone can be saved, but maybe. Plus, I'm super curious about why this is happening.

As written here:
Hi guys, I think I solved the problem.
After a factory reset, my phone didn't play any sound from the speakers (neither the top nor the bottom), couldn't record anything from the mic, couldn't record any type of video with the stock Google camera ("Can't connect to the camera" or 0:00 seconds long videos) and YouTube acted weird sometimes.
I spent to days looking for a solution, and I understood that the problem was in the headphone jack. It remains triggered as if there were headphones inserted, someone resolved inserting and removing a real device in the headphone jack 3 or 4 times, but it was not my case.
I took the phone apart, physically disconnected the headphone jack and then rebooted the device. All the problems are gone! The sounds came back perfectly from both speakers, the camera can now record video and the mic is working. After this test I turned off the phone, reconnected the headphone jack, rebooted and still no problems. The headphone jack works fine too, and YouTube has no problems reproducing videos.
I even tried two factory reset and everything is still working fine! I hope to be helpful to someone, this procedure has solved my problem!

headphone icon on with no headphones plugged in!!

as the title suggests, last night as i went to sleep i noticed my pnone lit up so i checked to see what happened and I've seen the headphones icon on..
This is very weird, as i havent used the headphones for a while, but most of all it is a BIG problem, since i cannot hear the ringtones or phone calls unless i plug headphones in..
Anybody has a solution or a workaround?
btw when i plug the headphones in, the voice speed dial page comes on... is this weird or not?????
Sounds like it could be the headphone jack itself that is faulty, I guess the first thing to try would be a hard reset and see if that helps. Otherwise trying to brush any kind of debris out of the port with a cotton bud may be a solution.
i thought it would be some dirt there as well, but how can just dirt enable the speakers?? shouldnt it be some kind of metal or water that it would cause the power to pass through? anyway i did try cleaning in with no results...
The headset jack acts as a switch, When the headset is plugged in, the sound is routed to the headset. The icon indicates that the phone sees the headset as inserted even when it is not. From a repair standpoint, I see this caused by an open short (broken solder joint or moisture) or even the head of the 3.5 pin broken off the end of the headset and still in the jack among other things.
Dirt would not cause the short. Double check the 3.5 pin itself as the start point.
Unfortunately, I think it will most likely be a hardware issue.
For what it is worth, the fact that the voice speed dial activates is not a surprise.
thanks guys for the answers...
the problem has been solved by itself... I am guessing it was just some moisture gathered there... humidity is intense where i live and i will be not surprised if it was that... so far is been ok... It was rather funny that the problem was triggered exactly at midnight, so I thought it could have been a virus...
anw take care
I had this issue in other devices and was able to cure it by inserting and removing the jack very quickly about 10x in succession.

[Q] Help! Audio jack stopped working!

Hi,
So today I was watching a movie in bed and holding my transformer with 1 hand. The bezel (or thing that separates the screen from the sides) suddenly moved up so it was now disconnected from the screen. My headphones had stopped working. I pushed back on the screen/bezel area and it got back into place but now anything connected to the audio jack doesn't work properly. There is no notification that anything is connected another sound comes out of the tablet as well as the headphones. Please help, as I am going on a 12 hour flight in 2 days and really want it for movies.
Thanks
Do the sounds thought speaker still works? Do your headphones still working with other device?
yes and yes
sounds like the spring connector in the headphone socket might have bent, had the same problem but in reverse years ago on an xda exec a little plate that makes a contact when the headphones are inserted got jammed in the open headphone position so no phone speaker. Yours sounds as if the contact might have bent when your bezel loosened and is not making the contact when inserted. Looks like an Asus job. The contact is doglegged so that when the jack is in it closes the contact, if yours/has bent straight when the jack is in it still won't contact.
But then again could be wrong.
maybe clean ?

This happened to me too. After I mod my tablet to add 2.5mm barrel plug charger my speakers stopped and the audio jack worked in only one side. Then a few hours later after I pressed on the bezel in the same place as you the audio jack did not work in either side. I read about reboot the tablet to reset audio and tried but it did not work for me. I opened my tablet and unplugged my speakers from the board and the audio jack now works 100%. I have replacement speakers, so I will soon be reinstalling and testing the original speakers and my replacements and maybe get to the bottom of this problem.
So maybe a tablet reboot (off and on) will do same for you without opening. Maybe there is another trick to reset the audio, but I do not know. It may be something else, but I do not know. Good luck.
If you want to open and unplug & plug speakers you need a torq #5 to open the two screws. Put thumbs on screen and finger nails over edge and under bezel lip and push/pull gently - starting a one of the top corners. If you get hung try wiggling a small plastic tool under edge and try again, carefully. The speaker plug on mobo is small white socket mounted on board in bottom left. Careful to not void warranty.
Thanks
Thanks everyone for your replys but I have a couple other irreparable problems so I'm sending it back to amazon

Headphone jack failing? I don't know...

So, I'm running into an extremely annoying problem with my G2. Just the slightest touch causes my headphone jack to stop sensing properly.
Example: I'll be listening to Google Music and i'll just ever so slightly move my headphone cable near the base of the 3.5mm headphone plug and suddenly the audio will stop as if I have unplugged my headphones. Yet, my headphones are still snapped in and once I press play again, the music continues on as if nothing has happened.
Some times my phone will go from headphones and speaker...headphones and speaker, headphones and speaker. It's as if it doesn't know my headphones are plugged in.
We are talking super light touching here. Any rotation of the plug while connected will cause it to fail. Simply picking up the phone will cause audio to suddenly stop. I'd be willing to bet that by simply blowing on the damn plug would cause it to fail. Hell, even a fart in the plugs direction would probably cause it to fail. That's how light of a touch I'm talking about here. Also, tapping and rotating the headphone plug while it's plugged in would cause Google Voice search to launch. Super weird.
I don't get whats going on. I see know damage in the headphone input...everything looks fine. I've babied this thing since it has arrived. It has been in a case ever since.
My headphones are good because I've tried them on multiple sources. Plugging in different headphones in to my G2 causes the same problems still. I've tried switching ROMs but the same thing still happens.
I'm at a loss here. I need some advice on what to do. Should I just call Verizon and get a replacement phone? Do I need to unroot to do that?
What a pain in the ass.

I think I might be having a similar problem as yours but with a different device (Square card reader). When I plugged it in the first few times there was a good sturdy click and it felt like it was being held in the jack well. But now it pulls out of the jack too easily, and a light touch causes the reader to disconnect. It seems like the contacts for the headphone jack may have been pressed in or something because it only maintains good contact if i hold a little pressure on the reader.
Either way, I don't like my options since I can either go on with a dysfunctional headphone jack, which might be ok since I use bluetooth more often than the jack, or I can try to get a replacement from LG which will likely be a refurb. I'm rooted too and assume I'd have to unroot in that situation. What to do...
Ever figure out your issue, OP? I'm having the same issue right now.

I think I pushed the plug in too hard on mine and caused the jack to loosen. Amazon replaced the phone for me no questions asked. They continue to amaze me.

Anyone else having problems with the 3.5 headphone jack?

Doesn't matter what I connect, it doesn't feel like it's every inserted completely and because of it I've been getting really irritated when the music stops.. Can I replace it and keep the same audio quality?
Or should I wait to trade it in?
Are you 100% sure that there is nothing stuck inside the port that is blocking a secure connection? Could be something pretty tiny even as it wouldn't take much to prevent the plug from clicking in completely
Yup, mine is the same. H918. I just take a little piece of the rubber off the plug in part and haven't had any problems since.
i faced this with my g3, if the headphones do not have a mic its a 2 connector and idk why but it makes teh phone think u hit the answer/call/play/pause button, just get a headset with a mic, problem soft or get bluetooth and dont sweat it at all

I'll try that, thanks
Pocket lint has done this to me several times. I put a little hook on a tooth pick and reached in. Every time I think no possible way, that's what it is.
You can also pull the cotton off a q tip and twist in there.
Sent from my LG-H918 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
yup. my v20 started this with my car aux cable. activates google now constantly, stops music, any slight bump of the 3.5mm jack and im jacked.
Took phone apart cleaned with denatured alcohol and still the issue. The port is cheap and the connectors are not sufficently making contact with the aux end. Its a sh!tty quality part LG dumped on the phone so our quad dac experience would suck.. Just poor manufacturing is the issue imo
I have the same issue whenever I use a headset or plug without mic/buttons; Google Now keeps activating unless I position the cable just right, and it is extremely annoying. I also checked the circuit board when fixing my SD Card slot and noticed that the headphone jack is soldered on, so I wouldn't mess with that unless you have a lot of soldering experience under your belt.

Nexus 6P - Since Replacing Battery, All Audio Function (in/out) Is Dead

Situation: despite a factory reset, I have no audio function, input or output - except via bluetooth, and even then BT won't support everything. The onboard speakers won't play audio for any app, including phone calls. The onboard mic won't pickup audio for any app, including phone calls. The same goes for the Google Assistant, which just says, "can't reach Google at the moment.". A wired headset will not play audio or pickup audio for any app. My bluetooth headset will play the audio from the YouTube app. However, on a phone call I can't hear the other person and she can't hear me. My podcast app (BeyondPod) will play audio, but only via my BT headset. Google Assistant doesn't work even with bluetooth.
I have an audio recording app ("Audio Recorder" by Sony). When I try to record audio (whether using onboard mic, wired mic or BT mic), it says, "Error - Could not start recording. Another app is using the microphone." However, no other app (that I know of) is using the system mic. In fact, I went into Settings \ app permissions and revoked microphone permissions from every single app, then tried to use Audio Recorder - it said it needed permission and I gave it. So at that point, it should be the only app with mic permission. Then I tried to record again, but it again gives me an error that another app is using the microphone.
And... it gets even weirder. Google Play Music (where I have a paid subscription) says, "Music temporarily unavailable - Music is temporarily unavailable. Be sure you're playing your collection on only one device at a time." Note: I am not playing GPM on any other device. When I open GPM on my Windows computer and try to play there, it says, "Unable to play music. Your music is temporarily unavailable from this device. Please try again later" so there's something weird with my Google account that (probably) has nothing to do with hardware or software on my Nexus 6P. And FWIW, I only ever listen on this computer and this Nexus 6P phone and I'm not actively listening on either device. In fact, there are no other "authorized devices" on my account.
All of this happened today after my battery was replaced by a local repair shop. (I had the dreaded, oft-reported "sudden shutdown" problem where my Nexus 6P would suddenly and without warning shut down at around 30-40%). After hours of futzing around trying to diagnose and repair this on my own, I took it back to them to check their work. They checked all connections and were adamant that they had not failed to reattach any ribbon connectors and hadn't damaged any hardware while replacing the battery.
I am more than freaked-out-puzzled and flumoxed over this. It makes no sense. I can't imagine a way to damage hardware that would explain this. Then again, for a software problem to happen at exactly the same time as a hardware change (or damage) seems very unlikely. And I have done a full factory reset. And then there's the weird issue with Google Play Music everywhere.
I don't know what to do or try next and I'm beyond frustrated. Please offer troubleshooting suggestions.

I'd be even more adamant that the sound and mic were working phone before they opened it, and stopped working immediately afterwards. Quite suspicious . My guess is the daughterboard or ribbon cable to it were damaged during repair or not seated correctly. But to be sure you should flash the factory image from Google's site to completely rule out a software issue. Shine a flashlight in all ports looking for debris, especially the headphone jack. Also try disabling the camera app then rebooting. Just wondering, is it still quick charging?
That sucks bro is it a reputable shop that fixed your phone? Maybe you should get a second opinion if you can't get it to work.

It's entirely possible that the tech broke something, but I've been taking my family's devices to him for years. I trust him. He might be trying to cover his tracks, but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.

That was my guess and that's what I told him when I went back to the shop. He took the back off and showed me the ribbon cables firmly attached. I didn't look through a magnifying glass, but all seemed in order. Maybe tomorrow after I've slept and can see better, I'll look again, this time with a magnifying glass.

I think this is my last idea without opening the phone. Try disabling the headphone jack with this app. I tested and it does work on 8.0.1 6P https://play.google.com/store/apps/...settoggle&hl=en&rdid=com.bjemtj.headsettoggle
You could root and disable the noise cancelling mic on the back from build.prop. Long shot but worth a try I guess.
Same issue... Solved
I had the same issue after replacing my Nexus 6P battery by myself. After the new battery went in, everything looked fine, until I received a call... no audio. Youtube, music, videos... no audio with and without headphones.
Some suggested consecutive 5-6 restarts, which didn't solve it. Other suggested different apps to change settings, but that didn't work for me either.
I suspected a loose connection. It seemed like the phone was not detecting the mic and speakers. I checked the cable that goes over the battery, and made sure all connectors were properly plugged in. This was not it.
I was really careful with removing the back cover plates when I first disassembled the phone. I used a soldering heat gun at relatively low heat, so I suspected that something may have gotten messed up at the top (camera) or bottom (charging port) areas. I removed the headphone jack and proximity sensor, then reassembled them. I then removed the PCB at the bottom (charging port) and noticed that it connects to the bottom speaker through spring loaded pins. I think that this was the culprit: It was not making a good connection to the speaker. It worked perfectly fine after I assembled everything together again.

Yes, thanks for sharing these images. I suspect pins 7 and 8 were not making good contact with the speaker.
Before I read @wmadwmad's post, I ordered another 6P off of Swappa. I'm not going to try to cancel out that purchase, but after it arrives, I'm going to take my existing 6P apart well enough to look at the daughterboard and see if I can get my existing phone working again. I might even order a new daughterboard ($14.39) and lower speaker board ($12.99) from GPD. If I can get it working again, I may keep it as a spare or sell it on Swappa myself. Hmm....
I really need to wait until the replacement phone arrives before tearing into the existing phone. Must be patient... which is my poorest skill.

Yes, sorry for my bad english. I've corrected
Firstly, thanks for your solution. However it doesn't work for me.
When I tried to play music, it will show the message that audioFX stops running. And of course, all sound has gone. Even mic is not working.
Everything happened after my replacement of battery. Maybe I did something wrong in the procedure of replacement.
I tried to disconnect headphone jack, and daughter board and reconnected them finally. But nothing changed, it doesn't work at all. Does somebody encountered the same problem and found the solution? Just give me some suggestion please.:crying:

yeah, I've tried what you said. Unfortunately, it's not useful. Now, I believe there's something wrong with my motherboard. By the way, my phone's camera doesn't work well, too. The problem may be beyond my repairing ability.
Hi. Yes, there is another possibility actually. It depends whether you're somehow having trouble with the accelerometer(screen rotation) too.
If this is the case, then I can tell you from personal experience that you might be having issues with the ribbon cable which runs behind the volume buttons, almost all the way on left side of the device. The engineers who designed the phone made an absurd decision as to render this simple ribbon cable as one of the critical connections in terms of Audio and accelerometer as I mentioned.
I had a spill once and though going through the insides and the board with a %99 alcohol, and cleaned throughly, the only function hasn't returned was audio and ability to make calls regarding to that. I did find some threads with almost same complaints that time and figured it out by replacing the cable from a broken variant(parts were not readily available on eBay by then).
So give this a go and write back if it actually turns out to be the culprit the way it was for me. And go easy with the cable in case you will need to replace it, start with the module-ish ends sitting on thr bezel first.

yeah, I've tried what you said. Unfortunately, it's not useful. Now, I believe there's something wrong with my motherboard. By the way, my phone's camera doesn't work well, too. The problem may be beyond my repairing ability.

In my case the two problems were connected to the headphone jack, but try what @wejgomi said and let us know

Now that you mention it, I did have issues with Camera not functioning, opening black screen either when that happened. Especially the front cam, seems like the symptoms do match. Give it a try and report.

And go easy with the cable in case you will need to replace it, start with the module-ish ends sitting on thr bezel first.

thanks for your suggestion, but I find little information about the ribbon cable behind the volume button. So I want to post some pictures to check if I understand your suggestion well.
And if it is just the cable you mentioned, what should I do now. (I'm new here)
Yep, that's it. I would start by checking the connectors in the mobo, if that doesn't help, go eBay a new one, I doubt it would break the bank. Remember to check if your symptoms actually matches with what I said before everything. Gl.
