Oneplus 5 vs Huawei - OnePlus 5 Questions & Answers

Hi,
I am going to buy a new phone but I can't decide what to buy. I have 3 options. Oneplus 5, Huawei P10 or Huawei Mate 9. Since all of them really powerfull I focused on camera, design and battery. Which one should I buy?

Oneplus 5 has a great camera. The Huawei P10 is no slouch either.
I am not a fan of the Huawei Mate 9 design, I lean more towards the P10 and OnePlus 5.
The battery life on OnePlus 5 is excellent I'm getting about 7 to 8 hours of screen on time.
PS. I'm not a fan of the stock launcher on Huawei either. I would want to change it to Nova launcher really quickly.
I would get the OnePlus 5 but I am obviously a bias on the matter. All in all they are great options, and I don't think you would be disappointed in any of them.

You could try the honor 9. It sounds really good too. The camera seems to be focused on being high powered. I'd go for that one as opposed to the other Huawei phones you mentioned

It comes down to what you want. Do you want stock-ish android with tons of custom rom support? And the easiest bootloader unlock on android (Will grow even more in the future) or are you okay with the bloated emui with next to no ROM support?
I have a oneplus 5 and my mom a mate 9. Emui constantly nags her about shutting down nova launcher amongst other apps. It won't even allow her to open them at certain points. And it has very, VERY aggressive ram management.
Now they're both extremely fast phones with great cameras ..
The mate 9 is significantly better at battery life.. But my oneplus 5 will get me through the day for sure. The mate 9 would bee more like a day and a half.
It really comes down to what you want. You should give us some more information on your preferences.

How these phone cameras compare? I'm interested if the Oneplus 5 camera is a step-up in camera department from the Mate.

Thank you very much! One day in long usage is fine. Mate 9 is really big and heavy. Also I have to change it's region after I buy it beacuse i can't buy it with official warrenty. Region change is hard because of bootloader and there aren't much developers.
What about P10? I can buy P10 with official warrenty. Price of P10 and Oneplus 5 are almost same here.

Honestly, there's no comparing the ease of using the oneplus 5 to any huawei device with region changes/ bootloader unlock/ dev community.. Personally I give the edge to the oneplus for simplicity. There's no hoops you have to jump through to operate your phone. The mate 9/p10 are all hoops.. My mom can't get updates on her mate 9 because she lives stateside..
Again, I think the battery size the mate 9 or p10 have over the oneplus 5.. But if you're charging every night, it won't make a difference. Furthermore, the availability of dash charge accessories is more widely available than the mate 9 super or turbo charge accessories.
Don't get me wrong, both are great phones, but really, the oneplus offers a better software experience I think, which is the most important part I think..with So many other aspects being so close.
4k eis on oneplus 5 is incredible btw..

Huawei P10 has 3200Mah battery. I think OnePlus 5's battery goes more than P10's. Am I correct?
The camera of p10 is better imo, it can take black and white shots etc. Also it has official Huawei warrenty.
Battery is more important for me so I think I will go for OnePlus 5. Thank you very much for that great informations.
Lastly I heard OnePlus5 outdoor brightness is not enough, what do you think about it?

Actually, the outdoor brightness is surprisingly good! The OP5 has a screen that seems very similar to the S8, in terms of brightness and colors (my opinion). It's a really good Super Amoled screen compared to the rest of the Flagships aside from Samsung.

Maybe you get biased thoughts, since you are on a 1+5 forum.
I was in the same doubt as you, between 1+5 and Mate 9.
What I discovered reading many threads and watching many videos is:
- Mate 9 takes better photos, has better sunlight legibility (besides being amoled, 1+5s screen under sunlight sucks), have better battery life (slightly, because SD835 is very power efficient), have better audio recording and video recording, have better loudspeakers and better cell signal reception.
- 1+5 is faster (not by a big margin), is lighter and not bulky (Mate 9 is very big), have better WiFi performance and much better community development.
Android O is on schedule to Huawei phones, but certainly will come much faster to 1+5.

Mate 9 Pro vs S7 edge

Fellow XDA members check out my video comparison of the Huawei Mate 9 Pro and the Samsung galaxy s7 edge, you will be surprised, Mod Edit
Anyone else prefer the s7 edge over the Mate 9 Pro?
Since we're discussing the Mate 9 as well (vs Mate 9 Pro), i'll re-add the comments i previously deleted. Chose the Mate 9 over S7E due to (a) battery life, (b) preference for flat (or much less of a curved) screen and (c) big screen with good form factor. S7E served me well for 8 months. I'm not a fan of the S7E's curved screen, but the Note 7 curved screen was doable. With the Note 7 "evaporating" from the smartphone scene, (for me) there were no viable alternatives until i saw/fondled the Mate 9. i've made a few compromises to use the Mate 9 (vs the S7E) such as opting for the FHD vs QHD screen, better camera on S7E, etc. (for me) Mate 9 offers best form/function capabilities, camera will support my use/needs and the compromises i've accepted (in my opinion) are not show stoppers. did i mention that, with the addition of an active stylus, i can manage my Note 7 withdrawal symptoms until the international version of the Note 8 is available? finally, i cut the cord with my S7E when i gave it to my wife as her "yearly" upgrade until the S8 is available for her.

Nope. Sold my S7E for Mate 9 and never looked back. Mate 9 is superior against S7 family in every way, except one. Waterproof.

In good and "normal" light Mate has much better dynamics and colors are more natural. I don't like how much S7 is sharpening the pictures and you can see it by zooming the picture.
In really dark situations S7 takes better pictures (f1.7 is able to gather more light than f2.2) but Mate's monochrome sensor gives additional boost to Mate. So in overall I would rate Mate and S7 pictures pretty close, but slight edge on S7 side in dark.
But Mate camera is more capable with all different modes (Leica colors, light trails, monochrome sensor etc.) so in overall Mate is better in camera area.
This is my personal opinion and I have used S7 Edge 6 months before buying Mate.

I have noticed that it depends of the darkness. In really dark situations, without any light, S7 Edge is superior against Mate. But then again, I don't usually take that kind of shots with my phone.
Mate 9 starts to shine if there is some kind of a light source in picture

I like the Mate 9 camera, it is very good, it just depends on how someone personally uses it and what situations
Beside low light, I think laser focus is still inconsistent & slow compare with S7 dual pixel focus.. It makes alot difference when capturing kids..

so what it the meaning to root XD, only to greenify? or tasker?
Both take sh**ty pictures in low light, even if one is slightly better than the other, its still sh**ty. But I digress, I switched from S7E to Mate 9 purely because apps launch quicker, longer battery life, Leica optics, flat screen, and that super charge tho!
Just bought mate 9 to replace s7e, gonna miss the awesome dac and ip68 rating as well as dual pixel focus but the m9 is much better in terms of speed, battery big beautiful IPS screen, slightly better camera in normal light, crazy fast and doesn't throttle on gaming due to no DVFS like in sammy phones....
Still evaluating the M9, but it seems a big keeper, now as for DAC it serves mine Sennihizer Momentum HP well.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a good usb DAC?

Agree but either way those good low light pictures are not that great
Got a burned pixel on my s7E after just 2 months, switched to Mate 9 pro. I was already impressed by the P9 but the LON exceeded my expectations, the Leica is sublime, the design is way more better than that of the S7E. Graphic performance are less impressive but there's a feeling of strength combined to the smooth and fluidity that makes the Huwaei machine better in my opinion. Sound output and battery life are also better on my LON.

comparing to s8 plus and G6

I had a chance to play with thew new Samsung and LG devices. even though they are wider, their screens feel significantly smaller than the Mate 9. Their email software is better than M9 IMHO. Cameras, though not as creative as the M9 benefit from lower aperture (1.7 and 1.8 vs 2.2) which was clear when I took low light shots with them at a Verizon Store.
Anyone else have a chance to do a compare?
I can't stand Samsung bloatware on their devices and am enjoying my near stock Android platform on the Mate9.
Did it have all the typical Samsung apps?

I can't stand TouchWiz. I really tried to like it but couldn't get over the look of it. Also hate how they try to push their own apps instead of Googles
G6 S8 will have better cameras and display is optional, CPU performance and overall performance the Mate gonna dominate both, battery life there is no competition, now imagine a Mate 10 with 10nm Kirin 970 and 4500mah or even the same 4000.
For next mate, they have to improve software even more and cameras, F 1.8 like on P10P as well on front, a 13MP f1.8 with OIS would be a killer for accurate selfies under low light.

Agreed that Huawei's Android Email app is not as good. I personally use Nine ($9.99), I think it is the best email client for Exchange/Active-sync mail. However, Nine doesn't support Google and I used Gmail for that
Hm. I've had all the S Galaxy series. The only one I remained with was the Note 4. Best one overall. The rest, the battery sucks. Simple.
The G6 is good but it's too slow and too stuttery coming from the Mate 9.
Both have better screens....and the Samsung cameras have been rocking since the S3. Huawei will have to catch up there.
I'm with the Mate 9 until the Note 8. And I love Emui. Just love it.

I'm going to give the S8 a go. That screen really is incredible. The camera in low light was the item that I found most frustrating on the Mate 9. I haven't tried the p10 to see if it's really better in low light. I already miss the Bokeh having returned the mate 9. It's so unique. But low light shots were always far too noisy.

Should I buy Oneplus 6T?

I have Huawei P20 Pro now, and OP 6t or 6 is interesting for me I want to find out the Oxygen OS.
But I'll change my phone in fall, to a Pixel 4/4 XL, OP 7T or Note 10.
Camera, software, battery life and teh speakers which is important for me.
Camera is great on p20 pro but Pixel is better in this category, front facing camera is so bad at p20 pro and I like the pixel's more, and OP has ported Gcam. How good is that?
Battery life on this phone is great, and probably the 6T is as good as it, because OP always has good battery life and the 6/6T runs Android Pie which is also better for battery.
Software where is the P20 Pro is bleeding. Emui is the worst I've ever used. I did not use stock android or Oxygen OS. I just saw them on my frieand's rooted phone. I I love the smoothness and the cleanness of the stock android, and the customizations of Oxygen OS. That's why I'm interested in Pixel 4/4xl or OP devices.
Speakers is not too much important but good to have stereo speakers. What is a sad point at OP but Google Pixels has good speakers.
Display is not the best on P20 pro. I used Galaxy Note 8 before and Samsung is the king of the screens. It was sharper, it had better colors. But the screen is just a good point, not necessarily to be better than the Samsung's Amoled display.
I want to try out the OP maybe I'll not like it that much as I expect, but I might help then to chose between Pixel 4/4XL and OP 7T.
So my question is.
Should I chane my P20 pro for this couple of months to a OP 6 or 6t?
Or just wait for Pixel 4/4xl or OP 7t?
Thank you for helping me!
Camera is average, Speaker is average, Battery life is amazing, Software can be good latest patch is a bit meh but older builds are great.
It comes down to how much money you will lose from the P20 and then on the 6T if that's an issue for you. If money is no problem then go for it
Camera is average, but what about ported GCam? Does it help a lot or just a bit better??

Just a bit better... Camera sensors are budget Sony sensors.. So yeah nothing amazing going on here in the camera department if you require it at top of your list look elsewhere.
I came from P20 Pro as well. Go for it. You will not regret it.
Camera is really fine. The gcam mod makes it even better, especially portrait shots. You won't miss the P20 camera after a few days.
There is a stereo speaker mod for oneplus devices so you will not really miss that as well.
Battery is about the same usually. I'm getting even better battery life with the 6T with custom kernel.
Oxygen OS is far better than EMUI so you're gonna love it.
Thank you!
I think I give it a try. I'm interested in OP so it will be good for experience. If I like it and the Pixel will have some issues, I might stay with 6T for a longer time.
I would definitely wait for the OnePlus 7. The 6 and 6T are good options but the cameras not great, and no dual speakers, battery life is great on the 6T,I had the 6 also and honestly prefer the 6 over the 6T because its the fingerprint is better and the software is better optimized on the 6.
The only main advantage you would get from switching to OnePlus from where you are now would be the software. It is much cleaned and much faster than anything else with regular updates especially on the open betas.
If you must,go with the 6T if you don't mind ghe slower in screen fingerprint, but has bigger battery.
I would just wait for the 7 at this stage
Actually I don't want to pay for 7, I will be more expensive than the P20 pro, and my main plan is buy a Pixel 4 or 4 XL, so I'll go for 6T which is near same price with P20 pro, and save money for later to the pixel's.

I would like to know if it's à good idea to switch from S7 to redmi note 7 And how is good thé Xiaomi in picture, screen, speakers, battery life, power compared to s7.
Thank you.
Didn't have an S7 but did have a Note 4 Exynos and Honor 8 before I got the Redmi Note 7phone.
Honestly, speed will probably feel about the same since S7 had the Snapdragon 820 processor.
Gaming performance will probably be about the same as well.
The screen isn't amoled so if that matters to you, you're probably better skipping the Redmi Note 7 and getting the Mi 8(snapdragon 845) or the newer Mi 9(snapdragon 855 with quad hd and dual speakers).
Either of those will definitely be an upgrade to your S7 in multiple ways...
Processor, functionality, performance, build quality, battery life, camera, gaming etc
Mi 8 can now be had for under $400 new as well if price matters to you
Thank you for responding.
My S7 is exynos one and I know that Mali GPU is more powerfull for gaming. S7 has à good display but it's too little and had burn in.
I want to know how is thé remdi's camera compared to S7 has a good One. My brother buyed à redmi Note 5 pro and S7 photos are much better

I'm not sure... S7 photos may be a little better since it was the flagship of the year a couple years back.
If you're worried about photos, I'd get the Mi 8 or if you can afford... Skip the Xiaomi budget line altogether and go straight for the The Mi 9.
Don't get me wrong... Redmi Note 7 or it's twin brother Mi 8 Lite are both spectacular phones especially for the money to value quotient. They pack a hell of a punch and are popular globally for a reason but coming from the S7, if you're not willing to compromise a little bit in the area of video and photo quality, you're better off shopping for a Xiaomi flagship.
Either phone (Mi 8 or Mi 9) is the flagship experience you want but the Mi 9 will blow you away and be the true upgrade you're looking for

I just got a Redmi Note 7 today, and it will replace a ZTE Axon 7 (Snapdragon 820, like the US version S7), so I'm in a similar position.
Haven't used it much yet, but initial impressions are very good. I just run some tests on both phones in Geekbench Pro, and the Redmi Note 7 won in some areas, while the Axon 7 still smoked it in some tests. You're right, the overall performance should feel pretty similar to the S7.
Benchmarks aside, I'm happy to have a new device that is fully up to date - stock Pie (that I'll dump in favor of LOS as soon as I'm able, haha), a big battery and efficient CPU, a really fast fingerprint scanner in a natural position (meaning NOT on the front), a big screen (any bigger wouldn't fit my pocket), VOLTE, a decent camera, and some support on XDA. It took me a while to decide to buy it because I was concerned about it not having an OLED screen but now I don't think it's going to be an issue - it looks good. Works with Mint Mobile (T-Mobile) here.
Only Day 1, but I'm satisfied so far, especially for $200!
RN7 is way better .. except for the sound quality and the weight (rn7 is heavy lol)
These guys have nailed it!
Think you'll be happy with the phone especially for the price.
I know I am.
Use it for a while.... If you don't like it, sell it for a more expensive flagship.
For me it's so good I don't feel the need to have a flagship phone anymore!
Just saw a review on Amazon with someone who mentioned they upgraded to the Redmi Note 7 from an S7 and raved about it.
Check out the review for the Blue 4GB RAM/64GB version.
It's one of the newer reviews.

I got it this morning and yes, the redmi is so heavy. Sound Quality is better on xiaomi but i was using dual speaker sounds on S7 wich makes a plaisent stéréo effect. Camera is a bit better on S7 Thanks to live HDR, dual pixel technology and à good noise réduction.
That's awesome!
Can't wait until you try GCam.
Think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Also try open camera for 4K video recording?

Yes Redmi note 7 is next level in term of screen size, entertaining purpose, everyday all around. Battery life 2 days on minimal use. Picture not as good as s7 edge
I replaced Huawei P10 whit RN7 and I'm surprised how better it is comparing to P10. Screen picture quality is way better and camera whit Gcam too. P10 have Leica lense blā, blā, but I don't like Leica look and that camera overexposes picture, loses detail in texture whit smoothing, makes picture to oversaturated and colors too neutral. RN7 whit GCam is neutral, exposes good and colors are good. If You like overprocessed pictures then You might want different camera app.
P10 is not S7, but I can say this phone is good. Only complains are weight, and writing is a bit hard for Me in position as I hold the phone. Of course there is minor things like screen is a bit less bright comparing to P10, plastic body, speaker can be more clear, still usb 2.0, no nfc, no IP rating etc. If You don't want to spend alot of money on phone as I do then this is solid choice. For that extra 250€ I would spend on phone I can buy alot of different things for Me.
Both my wife and I just bought the RN7 yesterday to replace both of our S7 Edge, personally I notice the screen resolution difference between the two, I miss the notifications staying at the top, miss the app draw and the camera start up speed is a lot faster than the RN7. The main reason why we switched though is the battery life, both of ours are the US version which use the Snapdragon CPU which only give us around 4 hr SOT, and I pretty much have to charge 2 or 3 times a day (yah on my phone all day long ) , now with the RN7, without doing anything, I just got 8 hr SOT with 10% left ....so yah wire free all day and way cheaper than a flagship Samsung, I know I can get over the cons very soon.

Plus we can help you negate some of the flaws
To get the original look with the added app drawer, install Poco Launcher from the Play Store and you're done with that part.
Screen res? Can you actually notice S7's higher pixels per inch count? Nothing to do about that though.
To overcome the lack of permanent notifications at the top, install Notch Test (Notifications for MIUI) and set up the position, give all permissions to the app, autostart, set battery restrictions to none, and lock it in the app switcher so MIUI can't kill it off. I have the icons position set to 215 from the left and 36 from the top. Works great and mitigates the issue completely (issue for those of us not coming from MIUI, accustomed to "permanent" notifications).
Camera start-up - nothing to do about that unless Xiaomi updates the firmware to do so. GCam takes even more to start, but the image it produces is more than worth the wait.

OnePlus 8 pro vs pixel 4 xl

Anyone here coming from a pixel 4 xl?
I'm between those 2 devices and I live in Europe. I currently own a pixel 2xl and I'm pretty happy with the pixel experience so far.
For me, the pros of the pixel 4 are the camera obviously , the flat screen and the price (less than 650€ on Amazon)
Pros of the 8 pro are more modern hardware , more versatile camera , better battery and much higher brightness screen.
If someone has owned or used both can give me an opinion? Does the extra cost of 8 pro is justified?

Real pros from the 8 pro to be honest is better battery and better looking ..( and brighter screen)
Otherwise Pixel...
Forgot to mention that I'm not a gamer so I'm not chasing the latest and fastest hardware.
Dual SIM is also something useful for me and I'm not really sure how well pixel manages that with the e-sim.

I've had both. I was surprised how good the 8 pro was, this is my first oneplus device. The fingerprint scanner and face scanner are very fast. The face scanner is instantaneous. The display is beautiful and very bright, and 120hz is just smooth as lighting. The speakers are very good and loud and connecting to Bluetooth is flawless. The phone is very fast with the 865. The battery lasts all day for me, which none of my other phones really ever have. The cameras are pretty damn good. I'm definitely keeping this phone, I (unfortunately) returned the p4xl.

Hi...
Thanks for your views.
Could you also let us know about the haptic motor feedback on OP8PRO in comparison to Pixel?
I have the pixel 3 and its vibration motor feedback is fantastic.
Thanks

Obviously I don't have either but I think pixel and op are the only Android manufacturers that give attention to haptic feedback and even on the 7 that I have tried is really good. Better than my p2xl.
I had the Pixel4XL and now the OnePlus 8Pro ghere are my opinion:
positive points of the OnePlus 8 Pro:
"unsafe" unlock via the camera works instant, I had to hold the pixel often at an "extra" angle to unlock it
Finance and other critical apps are extra unlocked by the fingerprint
extremely smooth in the handling and the display is nearly perfect
well optimized Android-OS
Fingerprint Sensor
again screen is fantastic
phone design
positive points of the Pixel 4 XL advantages:
Android Updates instant
Camera is probably better, but for my trip and holiday photos the OnePlus 8 Pro is more than great, to be honest I don't see much difference
in very dark rooms the colour image is better / grey problems

Hi, thanks for the comparison. In your last point do you mean the camera in dark room or the screen? Does the 8 pro screen have issues with low brightness?
What do you think about the battery life of the 2? Is it significant better in 8 pro? Thanks again

In very dark environment the screen has issues, but if I hadn't read about them I wouldn't probably recognize them
The battery life (in my case with 2 sims) in the OnePlus 8 Pro is much better.
I sold my 4xl to get a oneplus 8 pro and the 8 pro is better in just about every way.
The display is the best ever. It's fast and smooth. It looks and feels better (ok, my opinion). Battery is definitely better. Brightness is crazy good. I can actually see it in sunlight. Not so much with the 4xl.
The 4xl camera is better, but not by much and only certain aspects are better.
Video is better on the 8 pro and I've been loving the wide angle lens which isn't on the 4xl. And the macro is great too..
Regular point and shoot I give to the 4xl but it's close enough not to really matter.
If you're ok with the money, run to the 8 pro. It's an outstanding phone.

For me it is the best phone after the Pixel 2XL at that time.
PS. I use it as my private and work phone
