Hi,
I'm a huge fan of USB-C to HDMI (used it a lot on my LG G5), but unfortunately it isn't enabled in Oxygen OS.
I'm aware that it's possible to mirror the screen via Miracast, Chromecast, and possibly DisplayLink, but I find these solutions to be far less reliable/stable.
So the big question is, will we ever be able to use USB-C to HDMI on the OnePlus 5 hardware (is it physically disabled)? Or is it a firmware issue which could be solved via modding/flashing?
I realize most people don't care about this feature, but many still do and I find that it a shame to be missing such a great feature eventhough we theoretically have the hardware required.
Thank you for taking the time to read the questions, and any answer or fix would be greatly appreciated.
Don't think so
It's just USB 2.0 with type C header.

Did you enable otg? If you did and it doesn't work I don't know.
Useless, there's a ton of answers to this already. It's not possible, use chromecast or some ****
You can use a displaylink adapter. Works with USB 2.0.
I don't understand why OnePlus doesn't support MHL, my S4 had it like 4 years ago. On USB 2.0 of course.

On one hand we all know that Nexus4 does not have the microSD card slot, on other hand I did not see explicitly somewhere stated that OTG is actually supported..
If anyone came across this matter please share it here..
Thank you.
I'm pretty much in the same position. I've been looking around the web to see how OTG is handled by the Nexus 7 and the Galaxy Nexus. Both support OTG out of the box, but what I have seen is that OTG works mainly for input peripherals (mouse, game controler, etc). For storage (flash drives and card readers) it seems you either have to get an app to read the storage device or root the N7/GNex in order to use it without an app.
It will probably be the same process as it was with the Nexus 7. Root, app, done.
Ok, giving this thread a bump. I asked Phil at Android Central (did the review of the N4, if you haven't read it I recommend that you do) about USB OTG with flash drives and card readers. Here's his answer (pretty much what theoneofgod said):

Ah, too bad. Seems like a pretty obvious thing to leave out. Thanks for the info, though.

And reading this: "The same connector on the device can be used for USB when a SlimPort® receiver is not connected" makes me think that the usb will only work as slimport or usb.

You don't need Root for OTG on Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7. etc...

This is read-only access to the flash drive, as far as I understand. If you want to copy something from the phone to the flash drive, I believe you'll need root and a driver, something like Stickmount.

I have the Ugoos UT1, Android Box with remote which came pre-installed with a working XBMC hardware acceleration setup. I mostly use MXPlayer. I'm really happy with it.
http://dealsprime.com/ugoos-ut1-qua...-box-8gb-rk3188-1-8ghz-hdmi-wifi-mini-pc.html
But if you want a stick and if you want Bluetooth, then I strongly suggest the Ugoos UM2, as it has everything the UT1 has (except a few ports), but in a stick form. So you're getting Real Hardware accelerated XBMC and Bluetooth. I have ordered a UM2 for my guest bedroom, but it won't be here for a few days yet. It should compliment the UT1 in my living room nicely.

If you want me to test any apps on the UM2 just let me know and I can check them out. Also I'm interested in any essential style apps you think I should use on a Mini PC.
I don't need bluetooth but pre-installed xbmc seems nice.
Can you power these sticks with usb of your tv or notebook?
It would be nice if you could try the app "cheapcast".
How do you control an android stick? With you smartphone or do you have to buy an keyboard and mouse?

Personally I use this keyboard and mouse combo from logitech, as it's compact and discrete looking so it does not look messy or out of place in the living room amongst remote controls. (the wife will not be happy if I clutter up the living room too much with gadgetry and this setup looks tidy)
There are cheaper Logitech keyboard and mouse combos available but this model to me is by far worth the extra few dollars for it's build quality and design characteristics.
I will be home in a couple of days around about the time when my UM2 arrives I ordered. So I will let you know how those apps work on it.
---------- Post added at 01:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:30 PM ----------
Regarding powering the mini PCs with a nearby USB such as the type found on TVs. I think they need 2amp so you may want to have a google and find the engineer repair guide or any technical specs documents for your TV's brand and model and ensure they are outputting 2amp from that USB port. I'm guessing most will be 500ma or 1amp, as they are mostly designed for the connection of USB flash drives for viewing pictures on your TV via the Tv's USB port.
I suggest if your laptop is nearby then use the USB from that as it should be able to handle the power demand. Ugoos also do a UM1 mini pc which includes the same remote control that comes with the UT1 Android box.
Apparently the Ugoos remote control is available separately and can connect to the UM2 via a IR pick-up dongle port (I chatted with the online chat facility on DealsPrime and they told me the remote was available separately, can't remember the price, around 10 to 20 USD I believe). Will try to find you a link. I didn't order the remote with my UM2 as I have the keyboard and mouse already. But the Ugoos remote works very well on the UT1 I have and I imagine it's as good on the UM2.
*Update I found the separate remote and it can be added as an option on the UM2 product page, it's ten bucks.
Well, thank you very much for the explanation! I will do some research.
Let me know when you receive your stick.
Did you already ordered something with dealsprime? Could there be any costs like tax or do they send within europe?

Gonna try one
Indeed I did get the unit a while back now but life has got in the way of me getting in to it yet. I checked it and it works perfectly. Is all setup in my spare room and it awaits me the moment I'm not working or helping the family. If you want me to test anything just let me know. I think someone else sent me a few requests, will check back and see next time I turn it on.
I can try Cheapcast on my stick tonight (CX-919), but I think most of these sticks should be able to run cheapcast without an issue as anything you buy should be Android 4.0+ at the very least and can be updated to 4.2.2 so far (I don't think any TV sticks are up to 4.3 yet, but I may be wrong).
For controlling a stick, a bluetooth or USB wireless keyboard is probably a good idea (like the one Blob recommended). You can also use an app like droidmote to control the stick with your phone or tablet via wireless as well (you could use a wired keyboard/mouse for the initial setup of droidmote).
EDIT:
Confirmed that Cheapcast works with the CX-919 using a Nexus 7 as a remote (only tested it with YouTube).
PLEASE READ.
I have owned a Nexus 7 for over a year. During that time I have had precisely one use in mind for this tablet, and I have been unable to make it work.
I want this tablet to be an emulation machine for my favorite old videogames.
I want to use a wireless gamepad with it to play the games with.
I own sony Dualshock4's and 3's, I would like to use one of those.
I have asked this question before and someone usually quickly responds with a link to some guide to root my phone etc.
The problem is, I am a really, really stupid person, and get confused as hell by these guides
No, really. I have been wanting to do this for over a year and I have yet to find a guide or explanation that makes enough sense to me for me to actually do it.
I would be really grateful, even willing to pay someone to help me with this.
I do not use the tablet for anything else. It was a gift I have no real use for to be honest. I would feel a lot better about it getting some use out of it....
EDIT: Why does this site keep trying to link to my google account everytime I hit F5? That's annoying and creepy.
You may have already seen this, but in case you haven't, there's a thread on here dedicated to getting PS3 controllers working with the Nexus 7

Unfortunately, this is one of those cases where your request sounds simple, but the steps required are complex.

It looks like you can spare yourself some of the headache, by using a USB gamepad (hopefully the PS controller also operates as a normal USB gamepad when you plug the cable in). Connecting and setting up via Bluetooth appears to be very tricky.

I think I'm actually going to just give up and sell it and rely on my PSP and laptop for emulation instead. I'm a really stupid person and this Nexus 7 has been nothing but headaches for me. I just don't care anymore. It's just not worth it for me. I have wasted so many hours watching videos and reading guides I'm just done with it. I'm over it. I'm just going to sell it.
I've been using my Dragonfly Red with a USB OTG cable on my Nexus 6P with the app USB Audio Player Pro.
On the OnePlus 5 the app does not recognise any audio device.
Shouldn't it work with this phone too?
works just fine with my oppo ha-2se, all music apps... even usb audio player pro.
Turned off the phone and plugged in the DAC before turning it back on and now it works.
I have the same issue with mine but with a Sound Blaster E5.
I tried what you did and had no luck on my end.
So, I reached out to OnePlus' support as it was working with other phones and they recognized there is indeed an issue. For now, my ticket has been escalated to a higher level for addressing the issue for a future update but haven't got a response yet from them.
If the situation gets a revelant update, I'll post it here.

No, it isn't, then that's not your problem. I still get connection problems when I plug in the headphones when the phone is running for a few hours without reboot, in that case, a reboot solves it.

So far, my ticket only got escalated to level 2 but no answer back yet. I will send a reply just to bump it up again so I don't get forgotten.
I know for sure that the E5 is not the issue. It's programmed the way it is supposed to be programmed for Android using Google's standards. The issue is on OnePlus' side. I have tried other USB DACs and none have worked. I don't know how it was possible for the OP to make the dragonfly works only by plugging it in before boot because my friend's dragonfly never connected using that method on mine.
I remember back on my Note 3 that some third party ROMs weren't compatible with USB audio. So I'm guessing that OnePlus just never thought of testing that out and making sure it's working.

Still talking with them on the support ticket. They're trying to push the fault on Creative's side but I already talked to them beforehand and their product uses known standards that does not require to be tweaked for each specific devices (like, standard protocols are standards usually to ease compatibility, right?) so, the technical support discussion is still going on on my end. Honestly, this is frustrating.

No, Android auto is working with op6t original ROM, I just don't like it. My car supports both android auto and mirrorlink but needs a "mirrorlink enabled phone" which op6t is not.
Just to make sure we understand each other, LineageOS supports mirrorlink so i can use mirrorlink dependent apps like sygic navigation etc?
