Does Nexus 4 really have OTG? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On one hand we all know that Nexus4 does not have the microSD card slot, on other hand I did not see explicitly somewhere stated that OTG is actually supported..
If anyone came across this matter please share it here..
Thank you.

I'm pretty much in the same position. I've been looking around the web to see how OTG is handled by the Nexus 7 and the Galaxy Nexus. Both support OTG out of the box, but what I have seen is that OTG works mainly for input peripherals (mouse, game controler, etc). For storage (flash drives and card readers) it seems you either have to get an app to read the storage device or root the N7/GNex in order to use it without an app.

It will probably be the same process as it was with the Nexus 7. Root, app, done.

Ok, giving this thread a bump. I asked Phil at Android Central (did the review of the N4, if you haven't read it I recommend that you do) about USB OTG with flash drives and card readers. Here's his answer (pretty much what theoneofgod said):

Ah, too bad. Seems like a pretty obvious thing to leave out. Thanks for the info, though.

I am very curious about slimport hdmi and otg at the same time... while charging. Possible?

Yes, thats what I think, but I havent seen anything yet.

And reading this: "The same connector on the device can be used for USB when a SlimPort® receiver is not connected" makes me think that the usb will only work as slimport or usb.

Check out the press release associated with this article:

However the more I read the less I see a difference with MHL

Same here. I am almost sure we will have otg and video out, but not both at the same time.

You don't need Root for OTG on Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7. etc...

This is read-only access to the flash drive, as far as I understand. If you want to copy something from the phone to the flash drive, I believe you'll need root and a driver, something like Stickmount.

USB 3.0 drive?

Hi everybody.
I haven't got a Nexus 7, but I'm seriously thinking on getting one.
As I live outside the US, but a friend of mine is traveling there next month, I'm making my plans on what I'm going to ask him to buy for me.
I have read about USB OTG support on rooted Nexus 7, and plan to use it for expanding storage.
So, the question that brings me here is, which speed does the Nexus 7's micro usb support?, does it make sense to invest in a usb 3.0 drive, or I won't get passed USB 2.0 speed?
Not really sure if all this usb 2.0 or 3.0 applies to micro usb, so please forgive me if I'm asking something dumb.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Regards,
Barba
Stick with a 2.0 drive if that's your main intention for it

I was wondering about this as well. Will the read/write speeds be faster on a USB 3.0 flash stick?

Any update on this?
I tried an enclosure with 3.0 and was not readable through the USB OTG. I ended up buying a 2.0 enclosure intead.

[Q] N7 to TV?

Hi
I'm guessing the answer is no, but is there a way of connecting the N7 to HDMI? Maybe using an OTG cable. I've searched, but couldn't find anything, so as I said, I suspect the answer is no.
Am aware of the HTC MediaLinkHD method, but was just wondering if there was a more direct route.
Thanks!
Otg is not possible. The device you use from micro usb is called an mhl adapter but I'm afraid the n7 will not work with an mhl cable

I know it doesn't, but BLOODY WHY?
Google have done this on purpose !
The only hope is Miracast.
The N7 has not been officially certified yet but Nvidia are signed up to it so its only a matter of time before it is.
You will have to buy a dongle for your TV or if you have a new TV it might get Miracast certification itself
Then the next step is a software update to enable the functionality

This has been addressed many times. As far as the current most up-to-date user manual online has been revised to say it is not supported. We probably will not see USB OTG in the foreseeable future.
Optimus G does not look like it has USB OTG working yet either.
Don't bet your money on it
its very regretting for me...:crying:
is it a hardware issue...or software related?

google and lg wantedly did this
It's so stupid that one feature of Android 4.1 is USB audio, which is an impressive feature to have but then the flagship Nexus device doesn't even have USB OTG support so we can't use it.

[Q] Galaxy S4 (ML3 Stock OS) HDMI out - anyone?

Anyone get the HDMI out to work on the Galaxy S4? I have my Samsung branded MHL to HDMI cable, and I am unable to get HDMI output working... any ideas?
I just tired it a second ago, im having the same issue, at least you know your not alone <3
I was only able to get it to work on my Infuse4G... but have traded it in for my S4, they said it would work... may that is my out to get another one? Maybe one with MDL? can someone confirm if it works or not on MDL?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using xda premium
Yes it works perfectly on both MDL & again on custom version of MF3. I'm using the new Samsung MHL 2.0 cable, which works without needing to be plugged into a power source. There are quite a few comments about people getting fakes out there. The most common way to test for the 2.0 version is if it works without having to use a power source and your TV running at 1080p 60hz.
MHL to MHL 2.0 adapter
I bought this on ebay [HDMI MHL Adapter Tip for Samsung Galaxy Notes 2 S4 S3 (Micro USB 5 to 11 Pin)]. Using it, I can use the MHL adapter that I used with my S2 with no problems. It needs USB power, but it works fine.
For those that are having problems and are on aosp roms, these adaptors only work on stock and Stock-based roms
Yeah, mine is a stock adapter (reqs power, originally came with my Samsung Infuse4G) and I am on a stock rom but no joy. I will order a new v2 model and see if it works then...
Thanks guys.

I also have the Infuse4G adapter. If anyone know of a way to make that work, it would be great.
I read that the S4 should be backwards compatible with standard adapters that use the addtl power source. I'm not sure if the Infuse4G one would qualify as "standard".
Thanks!

[Q] USB OTG on G2

Hi Guys,
I'm getting a 16GB LG G2 and was wondering how USB OTG works? Can I use a micro-USB to SD card adapter while using USB OTG? I guess it should work...
The one I have the idea of using is this. Its just easier for me as I already have a micro SD card and its less bulky then lets say as flash drive...

Thanks

It looks nearly exactly like the one you used. An adaptor is an adaptor. As for the OTG cable it's just one I've had for years on a number of different phones.

Its a bit steep for something small... isn't there anything similar but cheaper? Also can you actually use this like a normal micro-SD card in a phone? In the sense, when you shoot video, save it live to the sd card...

Similar... there are. Saw some knock offs. But rather go with quality I would say.
Check even in here, saw some threads.
And the second question. Yes I guess. There are also hacks, mods for rooted phones.
Maybe some native apps too. But did not yet check them out.
Also, since it's USB 2 it's max 30MBs, rather yet lower. Depending on the sd as well. As such might not be suitable for a full hd bla bla extreme video.

None of them are as compact as meenova... Any luck finding one of a similar size? I can only afford these knock offs.. Really broke now and need more storage...I already have a micro SD card u see...
type meenova in your browser its a great way to use your micro sd cards and with say es file manager or other you can move, copy files to and from your micro sd card it supports upto 32gb I think but not tried it with anything higher-the "meenova is about 10-15 dollars and it comes from hong kong so it took about a week to get here you can track it if you want -I think it looks a lot better than a usb stick stuck out of the bottom !
didn't see the post above sorry
here's a good stuff for you, a micro sd card reader in a very small size, up to 64gb, a lil bit expensive if you compare it with those big sized made in china card reader on ebay

I've not found anything else that does the job as neatly and its not that expensive-you can plug a mini usb to female usb cable and use a usb stick but it looks ****
I've found this...
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Micro-USB...ory_Card_Readers_Adapters&hash=item2ecba32db5
Its called something like Kawau C310 480Mbps USB2.0 OTG TF Card Reader ... I personally like it but it ships from China... Is there no way to get it somewhere here in UK quick? I really don't want to get Meenova as I can't justify 9 quid for this...Although its looking more and more like I will have to get it...
