im guessing it had something to do with the cable being used. i tried two cables, one of which worked and the other didnt. no idea what the difference was, aside from a different manufacturer. luck of the draw i guess...in any case, it was a bit finicky even with the one that actually worked in the end.

I am confused of what you are saying, did mhl work or not on Mate 8 ?
Since MHL adapters are expensive I take no chances.
But as it looks now MHL might be my only life boat left to recover my sms database... luckily I have my contact book synced in my huawei smart watch..but I have to recover it manually
which is takes a lot of time to do and is a lot of pain

in simple terms: yes it did work. but it does not work with all cables. some cables work, other cables do not work. i dont know why that is. your best bet is to order several different MHL cables online (i.e. amazon) and then send back the ones that dont work inside the 14 day return window.

i never said the cables were bad or broken. there are several options:
1) length and/or quality of the cable
2) manufacturer compatibility with different phone brands
3) active or passive converter with or without additional power line
4) version of MHL, dont remember what the current one is, but there are at least three generations (if not more) of MHL standards out so far
these are the options i can think of, but wouldnt be surprised if there were more

Does MHL adapters work on our Note 3?

So I'm wanting to play my Google movies on my flat screen and am thinking about trying a mhl adapter but didn't know if it works since our USB setup is different being a 3.0. Will I be okay just using the 2.0 USB for the adapter? Thanks everyone. It's either this or Chromecast.
Yeah it does work. The only thing is it used to play the movie on the phone to, but now it just says connected to hdmi. I used the 2.0 and it worked perfect. Crystal clear screen.

Thanks for that feedback. Would you mind sharing what brand adapter you used?
I wonder if there is an optimized mhl cord to take advantage of our dual slot 3.0 adapter for faster streaming.
By the way. When I was swyping the word "faster" it kept on outputting "gayer" lol 4 times. I think my phone is trying to tell me something haha.

I bought this one. I liked it b/c it had support for old MHL and my Note 3. I can use it on any of my phones or tablets.

MHL support?

I recently put a new deck in my car, and the ONE reason I spent the money I did on it is because of the MHL capability. Now it seems all these new phones don't support MHL. None of the newer Samsung do, and it seems if I'm trying to get one of the top competitor phones, MHL is no longer an option?
Did anyone see/read/hear of MHL being a thing on the 6P? If it turns out that MHL isn't an option stock on this phone, is MHL a thing that can be added via a custom rom, or is it purely hardware?
Thanks for ANY and all help guys!!

Haven't seen any news of it, but can confirm there's hardware required as the USB port is different (at least on regular micro usb phones, NFI with USB-C). I can't even plug an MHL cable into my S6, whereas friend with Note 4 it all works easily.
M.
That's kind of what I was thinking as well. Apparently they got rid of the MHL support completely in the S6 and Note5 Line. I read that they don't even have MHL in the Nexus 6.... So I'm really afraid they might not have it here either.... Kind of sucks I guess.
I am about ready to tuck a Miracast adapter behind my dashboard. Then there's no fussing with cables or anything

An alternative solution is chromecast has screen mirroring support. Tested it last night with the new chromecast app. Worked very well.
Chromecast needs the phone to be a hotspot and have internet connectivity at start up. Works if the conditions are right, so depends on where you live.

Only bad thing about that is there won't be a way to charge the phone at the same time.
and it does not work. Apparently google took the easy road and implemented only USB2.0 with USB Type C.
This means faster transfer speed - bull
Fast charge only because of qualcomm quick charge 2.0
No alternate modes (MHL, HDMI)

From what I understand, this phone does not support Qualcomm's QuickCharge. Every Google page on this phone says "Fast Charging". That's freaking bogus, too. It's part of the Qualcomm 810 processor. Why the heck not??? If the hardware is in there, its possible it could be enabled through a kernel tweak. No guarantees though.
And for that matter, that processor supports wireless charging through metal. Just give me DISPLAYPORT!

Unfortunately, it does not support "Quick Charge" Everything Google has said is "Fast Charge" which is not the QC standard. All your chargers you have now, are slow and useless to the 6P.

I was doing some research and found this thread. That CRUX looks interesting, but seems like Chromecast may be the way to go for $35.

Let's use that port!

Hi guys!
I know that USB type C can map to several devices (even VGA/HDMI).
How do we know which ones are supported?
I'd fancy buying a USB<->HDMI Adapter (smilar to the Slimport<>HDMI I have for my Nexus5).
Will it be supported?
It's not USB 3.1 so I don't know if all of those would still be supported.
In the reddit AMA the developers confirmed it would not have HDMI out. You could always mirror it with a chromecast though.
Then why USB Type-C if none of the goodies? Just for fast-charging and reversability?
Casting takes a lot of power and heat.
(Isn't losing video-out another downgrade?)

Well, quoting myself... Actually would the rendering at the device with dedicated hardware give up more heat than broadcasting via WiFi?
Which would take more power?
Allways believe that any kind of "air transmission" is quite power-consuming.

Yeah it is a downgrade. I never cared if a phone could stream HDMI before, but now that I'm seeing a 6P as way to carry a single device (no more tablet with HDMI + phone), it is disappointing. Plus, when I read about USB-C having so many capabilities, I was hoping the phone would include some of them instead of it just being a connector choice.
Strange choice leaving out the HDMI stuff etc. Don't understand it. I wonder if the 810 gets too hot outputting to HDMI.
I don't know if people would use stuff other than OTG or video-out. But it'd definitely be nice for some guys for other devices (even though most can be connected to OTG).
Ok... really just video-out
Casting generating less heat than rendering video... hmm..... no idea...

If you have ever done presentations using a micro-usb to HDMI cable, you know that this puts a lot of stress on the connector. And having to drag a cable all over the place is an inconvenience. This is with a Nexus 7 (2013). For me, the presence of WiFi Direct and hence Miracast is far more important. I find that with the Nexus 7 at least, Miracast works perfectly. I use an Actiontec Screenbeam Mini2 as a dongle. I am anticipatinf that the Nexus 6p will work as well, but we will see.

I don't see how Mate 9 could have a desktop mode, you need USB 3.0 to send video over USB, and the Mate 9 only supports 2.0 despite having a USB-C connector.
I bet the rumors came from useless journalists reading the EMUI 8 features list without even thinking about the required hardware when the only phones with that OS were the Mate 10 and 10 Pro, which do have USB 3.0.

I think that Mate 9 will not have desktop mode with Oreo, but you are wrong in one thing : it's not necessary usb 3.0 to send video over usb. A lot of phones can do it with usb 2.0. Almost all older Samsung phones, with USB 2.0 cand send video to the TV with a MHL wire ( and many others brands) .
PC mode
I noticed a reply from one person saying that the mate 9 lacked USB 3 support, however the Kirin 960 SoC DOES support USB 3, also his statement that video over USB required usb 3 is in error as MHL which provides for HDMI audio and video only requires USB 2. All you need for PC mode is a USB c to HDMI adapter and a Bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo. Basically turns it into a Chromebook with apps (some apps work good, others not so much). I wish people would bother to read the specs and do a little research before they post garbage and make themselves look like idiots.

One positive element is that Oppo R17 Pro has usb 3.0 type c port so that maximaze possibility 6T offer the same.

The same benefit of having usb 3.0 over 2.0 on any kind pc.
I assume you ar using pc at home or work right?
Even better being 3.1 to take advantage more features like connect to 4K screen or TV natively whiteout any kind converter or adapter.
Or doing simultaneously both charging with fast charge speed and connection to monitor or TV.
Not to mention x4 the speed of transfer any kind files from phone to pc or the opposite.
