Hi all,
Was wondering if a rooted OP5 can receive OTA updates as a non rooted one.
Thanks in advance!
Also, will rooting wipe/reset the device ?

1. Yes you will receive the OTA but you will loose root so after the flash you have to reroot
2. Rooting does not wipe the device, unlocking the bootloader however will.
Read this thread first https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/how-to/oneplus-5-unlock-bootloader-flash-twrp-t3624877.
In addition a rooted device will not receive incremental updates. It will alsways have to install a full package (as far as i know).

Yes you can download it but it will not install if the system is modified. You can flash it with twrp and reroot afterwards.
How could you download an incremental update? My system updates section did not even offer me a download of the incremental version.. and where else could i download it?

Would it be possible to install OTA updates if I choose to root the phone?
From what I've read, this is definitely impossible if I flash custom recovery.
But what if I leave stock recovery? Do I just need to reroot after the OTA, or is there another method to update?
Thanks
On my Galaxy Nexus, I get around that by just booting Clockwork Recovery (fastboot boot recovery.img instead of fastboot flash recovery recovery.img). Then I flash the OTA, re-flash su and I'm good.
If you are rooted with no custom recovery, your phone will still accept the OTA. When you install the OTA, you lose root. You can use something like OTA Rootkeeper to keep root, or reroot after the fact.
I am new to nexus devices... how often do they release OTA updates?

If you have a custom recovery like "ClockworkMod, Twrp etc" then you can't get OTA's.. some say if you have Superuser you can't get OTA's either..
You would need to install a stock recovery and download the OTA file and flash it..
OTA updates don't happen that often.. when the phone first release you might see a couple to address certain issues.. or if the AOSP code changes you'll see a update..

On the Galaxy Nexus, you can update via OTA while rooted. Everything else must be stock. The update will usually break your root, but it's pretty simple enough to re-root on Nexi.

They send out OTAs whenever they update Android versions. For the GNex, I think I got 4 version updates since I bought it last June (4.0.4 -> 4.1 -> 4.1.1 -> 4.1.2 -> 4.2)

I saw in the other threads that it does not break any root or TWRP. I mean, TWRP just came out, there is no way that an update could be made and pushed that quickly. I'm still waiting to apply the update, I have not installed TWRP yet (waiting on that to be polished too).

true, i guess i could buy the phone tomorrow morning and just do root and freeze the OTA
The OTA does not break root or TWRP.
NO
OTA fixes things, doesn't break anything IF IF IF you don't have TWRP installed already. I personally took the OTA, root did not get broken. then installed TWRP, did a backup, no issues. Just make sure you read the directions on the TWRP thread, so that you don't throw yourself in a bootloop.
DO NOT INSTALL THE OTA IF YOU HAVE TWRP INSTALLED ALREADY.

If you haven't rooted yet and install the update or it automatically installs for you as other have said happened to them. You can still root your phone? I saw a guide on here that allows you to after the OTA update. But can you still install TWRP after the fact?
Yes!

Yes, use this guide to root, even after the OTA.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448887
Then use this guide to TWRP it up.

Yes, this is what I did and had ZERO issues. Provided that you don't have TWRP already installed. Which by your post, i'm assuming you don't, putting that there for others.
If anyone is in a recovery loop because of installing the OTA with TWRP installed, there is a fix for that now as well.

Just wanted to make sure, thank you :highfive:
So how do I take the OTA if I am already rooted and on TWRP? I have read elsewhere that if you take the OTA with TRWP you get booting issues.

Two options:
1) return to stock (there is a thread for this), take the ota, root, twrp. This will wipe ALL OF THE THINGS on your phone, including sd card.
2) take the ota, then when in twrp (newest version w/adb support), when in tarp, apply the fix to flip the recovery flag (there is a thread for this as well).
I have a rooted (no CWM changed) and unlocked Nexus 4 with JB 4.3.
I did not get the OTA yet and I wondered if it is because the phone is rooted. In addition, I read some problems with people who tried to update to 4.4 with rooted phones and are getting infinite bootloops.
Do I have to unroot my 4.3 for getting the OTA and achieving a successful installation?
Thank you all on advance

Why do you need OTA update when you can get the stock ROM in flashable zip file? All features are remain the same for stock ROM. Search and download it in the Development sections.

I am rooted and received the OTA notification yesterday. You 'SHOULD' be able to install if ALL you did was root. However, if you applied any mods that made changes to the system, the OTA will fail.

This is your best bet if you want to run 4.4. You'll need to install a custom recovery to flash the zip files. All the files and instructions are here:

Will flashing the stock 4.4 wipe my data, or it is like getting the OTA, that I keep my settings...?

Did you read the linked post?
First step after installing custom recovery is to wipe data/factory reset, so yes, you will lose your settings.

What I would like is to update to kitkat without losing my data.
I have the bootloader unlocked and the phone rooted, but when I go to recovery mode I get "No command" screen (is that normal?).
I was thinking of getting the phone unrooted, then update through the OTA, then root it again, just for making sure I don't break anything, but the "No command" screen does not look very good...
On the other hand, Would I lose my data if I "unroot" the phone?

To unroot, all you need to do is go into SuperSu, disable root, uninstall the app and then reboot the phone.
If all you have done is root the phone, and didn't modify anything else, then the OTA update 'SHOULD' install without a problem.
You can go to Android Police and download the OTA files and flash them via ADB, or you can just wait for the OTA to be pushed to your device.
If you decide to do it the manual way, there is one additional step you must take to ensure to keep your data I believe.

Thank you for your help gbarayah, I really appreciate it.
One last thing: I'm not pretty sure the only thing I modified was the rooting. I did not install any zip to modify my stock version, but there is something weird. I will explain:
At first I had 4.2.2, then I rooted and installed CWM. When 4.3 was released I got the OTA update correctly but I lost the root, so I rooted it again, this time without CWM.
Is the "No command" screen what is supposed to appear when I go to the recovery mode from fastboot menu? Or I would get a default recovery mode program?
If everything is right I will unroot for getting the OTA, but if not, I'm afraid I will have to flash CWM and the stock version, loosing my settings...
EDIT: Ok, I've just realized to get into stock system recovery I have to press VolUp and Power buttons once I'm in the 'No Command' screen, so I'm pretty sure I don't have problems installing the OTA update. Thank You!!!

Glad I could help. In the future, as long as you don't modify the system by flashing any modifications, you should be able to get the OTA update to install. Root doesn't affect this, and if you're worried about it, you can always uninstall it.
I opted to update using the stock zip files that were posted above and it worked just fine for me.
My g 4 play is rooted and unlocked, and I received a security update via OTA today, my recovery is TWRP 3.2.0, I already saw that it has support for OTA update, but I did not find it to install. How do I do? the update is MPIS241-15.3-16

I'm not an expert, but I think it depends on how you use twrp. Do you boot twrp each time you go in, or did you flash? More importantly, did you choose the option to keep system read only? If you kept it read only, ota should be same as always. Settings--about phone--software update. If not allowed modifications to system, I think you'd need to use a backup from before the change was made to system partition, or dl a factory image from somewhere there's good instructions on XDA

Don't apply the OTA.
You need to unroot.
That means flashing the boot.img from the release you are on, then take the OTA.
After taking the OTA re-root.

Ah... That makes sense. So just flashing boot.img from the current release does not wipe my device, then take OTA. Then root again.
Where can I find the right boot.img I need?
Hello,
You can follow the instructions fr this thread; I can attest to the steps as I have tried them with success.
